I don’t know why I thought he was introducing himself in the beginning saying “I am Maydoff Adams”. But then he said “and so are you and so is this table.” lol
That i also heard, and i was like,
Me Adam? Adams in the air?... Whaat???
I thought it was atoms
so we are all maydoff adams
@@lutfiramly4168 lmfaoo!! Hello maydoff Adams. I am Maydoff Adams!
He said ... I'm made of atoms so you so is this table and there are atoms in the....air ..but they are. All small to
Thanks Deane. Thanks, Rob. Thank you for uploading all these wonderful old segments. Like so many Australians my age (late 40s), The Curiosity Show was an important part of my youth. I was very impressed with this segment when I saw it on television as a boy, and have described the experiment to different people many, many times over the years. It's a brilliant experiment; such a profoundly simple way to demonstrate the compounding effect of a fission reaction and just how much energy is released so rapidly. I'm so happy to have got to see this segment again.
Did you see when Deane did this one on Hey Hey It's Saturday Night? The tank was much bigger, with a lot more mouse traps.
I wonder how many attempts it took to set up 19 mousetraps with 2 ping pong balls each, while stretching over a glass tank?
Usually 1 attempt. Chain reactions work very well. He just have to close the aquarium fast.
@@GoMrTom he's talking about setting them up before they started, not triggering then when they're coming

We need shows like this again
I was thinking that the control rods in a nuclear reactor could be presented as sticky rods (covered by some glue, double sided tape). Some of the flying "neutrons" can be caught, hence slowing down the reaction.
Sure, there are times and people that would love to have all the elaborate details and workings, but you making it so simple to understand is totally awesome. There's been times in the past that I have been into something, but no matter how hard I try I can't manage to fully understand. Some of the time of I had these videos you make would have saved months or years of wondering or reading and asking and sometimes still not being able to understand like I want to. You guys are awesome
This science experiment is a very good example of a chain reaction.
4:00 The sarcasm in his face is so unreal that it's funny! 😂
Memeworthy moment
I originally thought those were chickens. When I saw the mouse trap I thought something awful was going to happen.
Haha same
Same here
#metoo
bruh
I remember Dean Hutton coming to our school, and doing this experiment as part of his science show. He also showed a video where they did this experiment with a whole room of mouse traps. I believe it was a clip from an episode of Hey Hey It's Saturday.
4:00 Why is this not a meme yet?
That "WOW" is a meme worthy.
Like so many others here, I grew up watching the curiosity show. Do they even make show like this anymore. This is a fond bit of nostalgia for people around 45+. I miss those days.
Superb !! I bow my head to the guy's imagination in using the mousetrap analogy to explain the Nuclear Chain Reaction, and the flawless execution of the idea.
Next time you think of nuclear energy , think of mousetraps. Deane your a legend
Well I’m glad you asked… (that phrase is cemented in my childhood memories)
We're all just protons, newtons, electrons that rest on a Sunday. Work on a Monday and one day we'll be singing the old tune zippity zoo da, zippity day...
I couldn't help to think of that Cat Empire song. I used to listen to them in high school despite being American.
No mice were harmed during the making of this video.
But quite a few atoms were startled!

I'm a former nuclear operator for the US Navy.
I've never seen such a simple way to explain how fission works.
I might try to explain it to my nephew using this trick.
Really neat-o!
Can I suggest you the Jackass version of this experiment? ruclips.net/video/u3SwO5p0b_E/видео.html
Sorry... 🤣
What a wonderful way to explain nuclear fission reaction . That is a gem of an analogy
So since this episode we’ve discovered that electron paths are more of a fog than the orbital paths that we were taught. So to break it down, suppose for this example that the nucleus you are studying is the size of an average Volkswagen Bug and is located in Kansas. The electron could be in Vegas one second only to pop up In Baltimore the next second. No idea why tho.
Since this episode? Quantum mechanics is 100 years old.
@@mbrusyda9437 I doubt you read far enough into my comment to grasp the core concept. That electrons move differently than we once thought/were taught in school.
Probably why you responded with such a condescending tone. With nothing helpful. And easily googled. I sense a hateful person in you Mr Rusyda. May you someday find happiness.
@@Gir-Riff-raffe I doubt you grasp the core concept of my comment either.
We've known such thing a hundred years ago, not just since this episode. Or perhaps it's *you* and not *us* that just discovered it since this episode.
@@mbrusyda9437 naw dude you failed to even understand what I was talking about. That I’m even responding right now, is a blessing to you. You badmouthing fuck. Shared absolutely zero information. Just poorly regurgitated something someone told you. Even tho you’re ignoring my point and making it about you talking shit to me. Because that’s who you are, a shit talker who imparts zero helpful information. Have fun talking shit to the rest of RUclips. Try not getting pissed as fuck next time you see a woman voting too. Blocked.
@@Gir-Riff-raffe he is right tho...
The show was also on German TV. Nothing comparable today!
The countdown as heard from American ears: "Tein, Noine, Oight, Seyvan, Seex, Foive, Foa, Thrayee, Tow, Wunn, Zero". Love these old science videos! Simple experiments to explain complex concepts. The target is for kids, but they don't dumb down the information or speak in a patronizing so many kids shows do now.
Why isn’t this show still on TV? There should be a channel playing every episode back to back 24 hrs a day. Top Gear and other pointless uninteresting shows are on all the time.
Simon Kehoe Hey now, don’t be dissing the Stig! 😄
I do agree but top gear is a good show what u sayin
The newest "American version" of Top Gear is absolute garbage
4:00
When ur dad tells u something you already know but u need money
Anyone else think it was baby chickens in the tank in the thumbnail?
I once saw film of a setup like that aquarium, but with some ridiculous number of mousetraps in a good sized room -- hundreds of traps.
The whole room went in less than three seconds.
Now multiply the speed of the reaction by a billion or more, and shrink each mousetrap by a factor of a billion trillion, and you're around somewhere close to a real chain reaction in a bomb core.
But that looks like a mousetrap?
Why yes it is.
:-D
So now I could make a home made nuclear bomb, I am off to buy a thousand mouse traps and 2000 ping pong balls. Do your last prayers.....
Make sure you get 2001 ping pong balls - either that or use your finger to trigger the first one!
Gee, thanks that was a nice simple and easy to digest method explaining the principle behind nuclear energy. It's such a shame it can be so disastrous if not managed properly. Oh and how many times did you catch your fingers setting the aquarium up? ;-)
+tendarb Thanks for your comments. I frequently do this as a live demonstration in my school science shows and, on a few occasions, have accidentally set off the chain reaction when inserting the last mousetrap. With the lid open, the ping pong balls fly all over the room. The kids love it!! On one occasion, I launched a water-powered rocket which hit the ceiling, bounced back on an angle straight into the aquarium, triggering the chain reaction. A spectacular accident. The kids thought I did it on purpose! Deane.
+CuriosityShow Oh no! It would've been quite an experience, until it was time to clean up! Although, I have a feeling that these 'accidents' may not have completely been accidents ;-)
Four people blinked.
So a nuke is just like any other firecracker. Thanks for clarifying.
Watching him flirt with those mousetraps caused a chain reaction in me leading to high anxiety.
This man tackles a complex topic with such elegance that even a child could grasp it.
That’s cause it’s for children
Best channel on RUclips.
Wow doing this experiment requires some balls
😆😆 by far the best comment, mate!
the sheer bravery of putting his finger that close to a set mousetrap
you could say he had
*balls*
Best channel i found boy better than most of channel today
Nicely done. It's a good segue into explaining what critical mass is too!
I realize that this could be commented on basically any Curiosity Show video, but this is such a cool way of representing this idea!
Anxious people : Skip to 3:54
A great demonstration in understanding chain reactions. I admit that science is not my strong point. However, when it was asked how many balls were needed to set off the 19 mouse traps and release 38 balls, I immediately thought that one ball would be sufficient. That seemed like a logical answer to me. After all, it is a cumulative effect. Glad to know that I was right.
Do you think they put the mouse traps in the box, or put the box around the mouse traps?
Never really understood atomic weapons until now
Lots of energy happening.
I understand nuclear energy but this demonstration made me think of the reaction in a whole different way always loved demonstrations
When Tv was worth watching.
So well put and well explained
"Look at that, balls flying everywhere"
Eureka Eureka .......🏃⚡
I have found a 💎 in my feed today.
Old is gold "Curiosity show"
I don't think you need to be observant to see the aquarium with ping-pong balls in it
Someone should do the same demonstration, but with a lot more mousetraps.
As someone who:
-Has never even been to Australia
-Is far too young to be from the era this show was produced
-Too old to be in the target demographic for this content
Why am I being recommended this?
Why do I keep watching it?
One soundtrack of my adolescence. Love this show
That must have sucked to set up. How much time, how many broken fingers, how many swear words were used in the making of this video
03:59 wwwooowwww
I love this show!
what a legend who thought about mouse traps, while witnessed nuclear explosion
That was the fabulous thing I've ever seen in my whole cursed life and I wish it was even longer than 5:04.
This is how I feel about your comment. 4:00
And conveniently, Australia has an infinite supply of mice.
I remember seeing this on your ‘Christian parables’ VHS! It was the final one on the video and always a spectacular finale!
Watched that VHS countless times… me and my sister recreated some of your experiments too, with the Bible verses!
Glad to find you again after all these years! Turns out you were on TV!
such a great explanation
My favorite science joke: I don't trust atoms because they make up everything.
longest 10 seconds of my life
what is this alternate universe where dean doesn't have a mustache.
This one sensible clip contains more meaningful content than whole TicTok crap.
You could go to five or six stores… or 3:13
Simple neat on to point . that voice is nostalgic
Mouse trapping taken to a whole new level
I thought those were chickens in that glass case
I just randomly come back to this video and put 4:00 on a loop for 2 seconds
The anxiety he gave me from messing with the trap
"Wouldn't that be fun?" Sure, oh, whoops, that little mousetrap is a nuclear bomb.
This is how the lottery numbers should be drawn.
It was satisfying hearing it
4:00 played it at 0.5 speed .... Volume high...
Aussie educational TV: "G'day kidlets, let's make a nuke! Greg, chuck us the ping-pong balls wouldjamate?"
ping pong balls.... its all in the ping pong balls
The noise he made @ 2:56 “whrrblrrbrbrlblr”
Ah yes, the ol' cheese trigger.
this looks like a video from an rng
Bro counted to 0
Isnt an atomic bomb fusion and atomic reactors fission?
waiting for nolan to show this process in Oppenheimer
3:57 3 seconds of the visual experiment in comparison to 5 min of explanation
I clenched a little when he placed the pair of balls in the trap
I saw this science experiment being performed before on "Mr. Wizard's World" and it was just as amusing as the science experiment I am watching now.
A simple, fun, and excellent demonstration that anyone can understand. Educating is a skill, and the presenters of the Curiosity Show were genii at this.
that's a good way to explain
I wish those folk over in Chernobyl had watched this
I thought those were newly hatch chicks
youtube algorithms have spoken
What a presentation ...
I really wish you guys could have filmed that on a high-speed camera and then played it back in slow motion :-).
I’m glad it’s the 21st century and we countdown from 3 now
