As a gun guy, and a former mechanic, I can see how innovators from way back when found a link between the two. Guns are vilified in some circles, and funnily enough cars are too nowadays, at least unless they are battery-powered modern wonders. Both are, at their core, machines that serve a purpose.

At the 4:00 minute mark you have a shot of a Hotchkiss engine. It looks like it was painted red. Was it a thing to paint engines back then? I know today a very few of them are painted (usually red or blinged out in chrome). Was there a desire among the public to have a painted or chromed engine?

And I thought you were going to talk about cars backfiring because the ignition was set wrongly.
But this is reminiscent of Hispano-Suiza. Maker of coffee pots, powerful engines and canon.

Most auto makers had to make things other than cars for the war effort- but unlike H-S, Hotchkiss did not start life as a auto maker.

@@VintageCarHistory I wonder how old was the little H-S branded Al coffee pot we used in summer 1967 ?

@@20chocsaday If I were to guess, I'd say it was [probably made at the French factory (they took it over right before WWII) and made aircraft engines for the war. Afterwards, they continued as a maker of small appliances. The Spanish branch after the war went into areospace manufacture.
