Fun Sailing on ‘Crazy Love’ - Contessa 26 - East Coast Australia

  • It’s a challenging time for everyone these days and what better way to shake off the daily stresses than to hit the ocean and set sail. I was lucky enough have the opportunity to help new owner Paris on her maiden coastal voyage aboard this fun little Contessa 26.
    Who needs a big yacht when everything is so much simpler and more manageable on a small, well constructed yacht - like a Contessa 26, made famous many years ago by fellow female solo circumnavigator Tania Aebi.
    Crazy Love is quite a well known Contessa 26 and she’s off again to discover new horizons after recently crossing the Pacific. She left Mexico with two crew aboard and covered several thousand miles before changing hands in Fiji to Connor - a solo sailor who took part in the Go Easy Rally, arriving in Ozzie waters in Nov 2019.
    In the early 'Covid days' I assisted Connor by acting as Broker to sell Crazy Love. I introduced Paris to the boat when virtual tours and inspections were kind of ‘vogue’. Despite the distance between boat and buyer, nothing was stopping her from buying the yacht sight unseen. Her drive and determination to take on the challenge intrigued me and inspired me. This was definitely her perfect yacht although she’d never even step foot aboard!
    I couldn’t wait to sail Crazy Love out Sydney heads for some grass roots sailing, tiller in hand and with a fresh breeze to put us through our paces! It didn’t take long to awaken the senses. With a sweet tender helm, she exposed her agility driving effortlessly upwind slicing through the gentle swell like a hot knife through butter. If I were to compare her to a race horse I’d say, she’s as flighty as a filly, well mannered although never a bore, with a real spring in her step.. and she goes the distance.
    I can’t wait to read / watch the next chapter of this awesome little yachts’ life with Paris, who is clocking up the coastal miles as she heads north with Crazy Love.

    Let us know if you make it to Townsville we're out in the Pond on Pura Vida. A 50 foot steel yacht. She had been a bit neglected and chose us to be her next owners.

      Hi Scott, I was in Newcastle during the east coast ows, i have made it to Coffs now, shame I did not know you were there. Hope to see you out on the water.

      Paris Naday ah yes, that is a shame. I was going to suggest picking you guys up and taking you wine tasting here in the upper Hunter Vally where I live now. 🤷‍♂️
      It was cool watching you sail your CO26 around my old stomping grounds. We moved from Umina a couple years ago, to build a house and set up our acreage. I’ve sailed & paddled (outrigger canoes) all over those waters. My CO26 Sentina is still down there on the hard in Empire Bay, but I hope to be able to finally move her up here into my new shed soon to really start her restoration 🤗

    Great drone pix, nice video. Why reefed in what looks a gentle breeze?

    • @eziyacht
      @eziyacht  3 года назад

      Excellent question - it was quite breezy until later in the day and then dropped off as we rounded the heads so didn't bother shaking the reef out as we put on the donk!

    Just stumbled upon this video, since weather appears to be very good why is the yacht so heavily reefed down?

    • @eziyacht
      @eziyacht  2 года назад +2

      A fair question Stuart. She had been prepared for Westerlies reaching between 20-25kts that day and it is always better to 'reef early'. It was the new owner's maiden voyage offshore with my assistance so the reef was put in before departure and remained in as she was continuing on up the coast the following day solo and preferred to leave it in.

      For some reason, I thought you were the owner! Refitting a '78 JJT version and put her in last week for some fall sailing before more work to be done here in Maine USA@@eziyacht

    Love your boat, and your videos, thank you for taking the time to create, edit, and post them! There's a beautiful Contessa 26 for sale near me. And I want it! But my friends keep saying I'll go crazy because they're so slow. What are your thoughts on that? I'm 52, I own my house and an planning on selling the house, then cruising the world until I am physically unable to continue. So having a boat that's sea worthy, relatively inexpensive to maintain, and trusted is critical to me. How slow is that boat? When I look at sailboat data dot com there's a bunch of numbers that I'm unfamiliar with and I think they relate to speed of the boat. But I'm not sure? Any help is much appreciated:) Thank you!

      Can't believe there's no reply.
      As I understand it under normal sailing conditions she should be nearly as fast as a 32 footer but when its choppy the weight of the waves will slow her considerably. So think 6 knot average on a good day. 3 knots minimum.
      Check out the extreme motion in heavy seas, Sailing Wave Rover. Alan sure has a strong stomach!

      Hi Mister Bee from my experience they can really fly along (in comparison to other similar sized vessels) but you'll be getting a bit wet as they do tend to heel. However, I'd estimate avg cruising speeds around 4-5kts. What's the hurry anyway? It's about enjoying the ride and having a modest sized yacht you can enjoy and manage easily solo -right? My yacht is 36ft ketch and we would only average the same speed but it's slow and steady - which is more enjoyable on long passages. If you have a chance to try the Contessa 26 then why not have a test sail? You know you'll always find someone to take her off your hands if you decide she's not right for you ;-)
