    Ben Schlappig talks about airline partners and alliances.
    Redeeming airline miles can be really complicated and if there is one thing that is more important to understand than anything else, it is the alliances and partnerships that airlines have.
    In many cases the best uses of your miles is actually by booking through an airline that is a partner or part of the same alliance as where you have your miles.
    A common misconception people have is that if they are earning American miles then they have to redeem on American. Or if they are earning Delta miles they have to redeem on Delta.
    Not only is that not the case, the vast majority of cases, the best use of miles is redeeming on other airlines. How does that work:
    There are 3 Major Global Airline Alliances
    1. Star Alliance which in the US United Airlines is a member of.
    2. Skyteam which Delta Airlines is a member of.
    3. One World which American Airlines is a member of.
    With each of these alliances there are more than a dozen global carriers, most of these are good and some not so good, but you can avoid those quite easily. The great thing is with these partnerships you can redeem your miles on any alliance airline.
    Airline partnerships go beyond the major alliances. It is not just so that you can redeem miles on an airline within that alliance, but in many cases airlines have many unique partnerships that can add a ton of value.
    One of the common misconceptions with one of these partnerships, people think, for example, if you have Delta Sky Miles they are in Sky Team which includes a bunch of airlines but people assume that if you are going to redeem on one of their partners, that the way it works is that you are actually transferring points to that airline.
    That is not the case at all, rather you are booking through Delta at Delta's Award Prices on those other airlines. That is an important distinction because there is no transfer of miles going on, so you don't even have to go to the other airline's website to figure out what is their award cost or rules associated with it because you are going based on the airline that you have your miles with.
    Most airline websites have the ability for you to search award availability for travel on the airline that you have miles with directly on their website. However in the cases of some of these partnerships, you might not be able to find the award seats online but you may have to call.
    While that sounds annoying, the good news is it means that fewer people are seeing those awards seats and it actually gives you better odds of finding those seats.
    It can be a little complicated to understand all of these partnerships but if you either google this or go to www.onemileatatime.com and go to any airline Redeem Miles page, it should show you all of their partnerships as well as the award costs.

    I enjoyed this RUclips video post since I have some miles with Alaska Airlines. I know Alaska Airlines is unique since it is not part of an alliance per se. However, I now know that I can book miles with American Airlines, British Airways, and the airlines in that alliance. Thanks so much!

    Excellent video Ben Schlappig. I have 2 questions ) which award calculator you use that tells you which is the lowest redemption from one city to another city example like the one you mentioned on qatar airways which was 70000 AA miles. 2) Which is the best way to be alerted when there is award space on a specific airline. I am trying to book a one way business class from South Africa to Turkey and cant find a single business class but there is tons of availability on turkish airlines website for cash bookings.

    Fantastic video. only problem is with one world you cannot use your points to upgrade with a one world partner using your points to upgrade from economy to business class but with star alliance if you holding a y,B class economy you can upgrade to business class.

      The ultra-low-cost carriers don't have traditional loyalty programs, but sometimes you can get an extra discount or credit for signing up for an account, so it's always worth checking their websites!

    I need help with understanding something about alliances/transfer partners. I've never booked a flight using points, so I'm still trying to figure this out.
    As an example, is there a difference between Amex having ANA as a transfer partner, versus using United to book a flight through ANA? Since United and ANA are both in the Star Alliance, doesn't that mean I can do everything with UR points through United that I could do with MR points through ANA directly? As another example: Then does it even matter that Chase lost Korean Air as a transfer partner, when Korean is still part of the SkyTeam alliance with Air France?

    • @onemileatatime
      @onemileatatime  4 года назад

      Yes, there are huge differences, because each program has their own award chart and routing rules. The carriers you can fly are similar, but United's program works differently than ANA -- everything from how you book to the price you'll pay is different. Similarly, Korean Air only makes one business class seat available to partners, as opposed to plentiful first and business through their own program. Does that help?

  • @A90MKV_

    Do you transfer points speculative????? To specific airlines?

    • @onemileatatime
      @onemileatatime  5 лет назад

      Good question! For the most part I try not to transfer points until I'm ready to book, and have confirmed award space is available.

  • @Pulpswo
    @Pulpswo 4 года назад

    Ok so you can earn miles on one airline that is within one of the three alliances and use the miles earned within different airlines within the alliance it is part of? Did I get that right? So if I fly with Delta and earn miles and want to go to Korea I can use the miles earned with Delta to book a flight with Korean Air?
