I think it's reasonable to say..those who follow your art may attempt to guess what you are doing next (me)...he's making a mortise and will turn his blank over and remove the support and bolts..nope...huh ?!..the center is opened..will he fill it somehow ?..more resin ?... Ok..he'll round the sides up almost to the bolts..yikes !..nope...oohhh..he's cutting circles to mount together !..lol... It's always an adventure trying to figure out the form and manner of making... Thank you Jack for this excellent adventure and the beauty you bring forth... As always...🌿🌿🌿

Love this - when you re-stacked the pieces and they suddenly went from 2D to 3D, it reminded me of a Möbius strip. And then around 8:50 when the line suddenly became clear and it was like "Oh! I get it!" Really satisfying.
Well summarised stu. How did you feel about the choice of resin colour? I wanted it to look quite natural but I feel like it came out a little granny smithy/ to us waste 😊

@@JackMackWoodturning ...yeah I did...although I think just about any other color would have looked good with that amazing wood grain...except maybe anything in the yellowish family which would blend rather than contrast with the wood... The color would likely be determined by the other furnishings it would be placed within...but, in the end, what you produced is a gorgeous work of art!...
I do. But I’m not a “high gloss” fan for wood. The sheen brought out the resin well and highlighted the beauty of that burl. I thought you made a great choice with your finish product.

@@JackMackWoodturning You are the artist and everyone has their preferences. Green isn’t my go to for the aged apple or black ash but rather a complimentary dark pearl gold. I just think it provides a subtle enhancement to the natural marvel of those woods. You are creative with a great eye but as importantly the skill to execute the design. Cheers!

I believe this in the times we live with all information available on the internet it’s entirely possible to be self taught but that happens through classic learning practices. Just winging t will not make you a skilled woodturner. Gathering and understanding information is key, equally important is the ability to know what information is wrong. Experience and time at the lathe will help with that

I love knotty pine. I was at my sister’s this week and cut a limb from her Apple tree because I like the look of it inside! She thinks I’m weird. But for 2 years she has been telling me she is going to cut so it’s not in the way when she mows. I just helped her out. 😁

I like the little jig for holding your angle on the first cut. When you first started the project I thought you were making one of those tables and I was disappointed because I wanted your ‘best idea’ to be turning 😳 Bowl turned out okay.😄
Very cool! Strange how the blue resin turned into a jade color. Looks really nice with the color of the wood. Looking into the bowl seems almost like a coral reef. Half expecting to see fish darting around in it.
Yeah Ken, when I finished it I kicked back with a cuppa and looked over at it on the bench, light shining through it and thought to my self… I’m sure that resin was blue ( with a hint of green) 60 ml blue dye and 15ml green.. I guess there’s a obvious explanation if you understand colour mixing.. I should as my dad is a screen printer and sign writer… il have to ask him.. or wait for someone in the know to explain it

Nice job! A great way to maximize a beautiful slab of wood. I plan to use your ring method in a future bowl. I was thinking that a strip of double stick tape on the backing board would hold the rings in place while cutting the remaining rings, or maybe a few dabs of caulk. Keep up the good work.
Thanks. When cutting a piece like this free hand it’s useful to take the piece out to measure the face of the far side and use that to plan your next cut. There are many ways to do it.

Stunning piece, the wood figuring alone is amazing and coupled with the resin is just a perfect combination. I like the method of creating the rings, but hate the idea of having to unmount/mount each time a ring is cut ... could be simpler to use a longworth chuck to hold the piece. Now all I need is some wood, some resin, a bandsaw and a longworth chuck!!!
@@JackMackWoodturning Sorry, not clear enough, I'm talking about the initial cutting of the rings ... it seems like a chore to have to undo the bolts each time a new ring is cut and needs to be removed ... was trying to think of how the process could be sped up. A longworth chuck might allow quicker dismount/mount, but wasn't sure if it would secure the piece enough to handle the cutting of the rings. Once again, thank you for taking the time to reply and impart knowledge :)

Nice job! A great way to maximize a beautiful slab of wood. I plan to use your ring method in a future bowl. I was thinking that a strip of double stick tape on the backing board would hold the rings in place while cutting the remaining rings, or maybe a few dabs of caulk. Keep up the good work.
Thanks. When cutting a piece like this free hand it’s useful to take the piece out to measure the face of the far side and use that to plan your next cut. There are many ways to do it.

Stunning piece, the wood figuring alone is amazing and coupled with the resin is just a perfect combination.
I like the method of creating the rings, but hate the idea of having to unmount/mount each time a ring is cut ... could be simpler to use a longworth chuck to hold the piece.
Now all I need is some wood, some resin, a bandsaw and a longworth chuck!!!
Do you mean to use a self centring chuck on the tailstock in place of the centring plate?
@@JackMackWoodturning Sorry, not clear enough, I'm talking about the initial cutting of the rings ... it seems like a chore to have to undo the bolts each time a new ring is cut and needs to be removed ... was trying to think of how the process could be sped up.
A longworth chuck might allow quicker dismount/mount, but wasn't sure if it would secure the piece enough to handle the cutting of the rings.
