The MD-11 was/is a very complex aircraft with very unusual flight characteristics. On approach it maintains a higher minimum safe approach speed than normal aircraft and as a result has a much more noticable nose down attitude.
That is why the aircraft flipped onto it's back. (For all those wondering) Gear failure, wing contact with ground, opposing wing producing more lift than that side now, speed still great enough to flip the aircraft upside down. Exactly the same at Narita, 40kt crosswind and windshear. RIP.
China Airlines Flight 642 was attempting a landing at Hong Kong. They were landing during Typhoon Sam in 1999. With gusts of 36 knots, the crew decided to proceed with the landing, a grave mistake. The plane touched down hard and flipped on its back, catching fire. Incredibly, only 3 out of the 315 people died.
FYI, the term 'casualties' means more than just killed. As defined by most dictionaries, it also includes serious injuries. In military use, it can also include any wound as the result of enemy action. According to records, this flight had 208 injuries (other than fatal) of which 44 were serious. :)
@madzane94 Determined to be a downward wind gust due to typhoon at the time. Rate of descent during final 10 feet altitude exceeded landing gears spec. for safe rate of descent and hence, buckled the landing gear. ATC was speculated to be at fault for not advising pilots of unstable wind conditions. China Eastern Airlines MD-11
@trent8002003 I read the accident report out of Hong Kong too. The airline and the pilots claimed it was ATC's fault for not advising that there downward wind gusts. They were very specific about their claim. I agree, they probably did not prevail.
Looking thoroughly the video, someone can see the "HARD" touch down of the plane with "little" bank to the right side. The hard touch down became from a windshear, and the result was the gear collapse (probably). I agree with someone that mention the difference between the wing lift generation which ends up in plane rotation.
@johng669 Nope. The ATC did warn all flights approaching of the weather conditions then. It was up to the pilots of individual flights to decide whether to land or not. The China airlines pilot decided to land anyway and paid the price. Subsequent accident report clears the Hong Kong airport of all wrongdoings and faults the pilot squarely for the crash.
yes its your opinion, I think they are very safe aircraft when piloted and maintained by experienced people. Plus it a sweet looking Bird to. Just my opinion, I think the weather had some issues to
What's amazing is only 2 of 315 people were killed. One eyewitness reported flames from the aircraft before it made contact with the ground. The flight was landing during a typhoon. One passenger aboard said people started clapping while the plane was still 100ft above the runway and he said it was an omen. He was right.
Well, I just don't understand that the md-11 had lots of problems, but KLM who is the only airliner still flying the md-11 didn't ever have any problems since 1975?!
the aircraft experienced a sudden downburst of winds called microburst.. i dont really know the sciences about it but the plane is simply pushed down, the right engine strikes the threshold lights, flipping the plane... a few died...
@johng669 No they didn't. China airlines was of course trying its darnest to cover its posterior. But It couldn't wriggle out of this one. It's Hong Kong International Airport on one side and multi accident prone China Airlines on the other. They didn't have a chance. But the MD11 was probably at least partly to blame too. It was so prone to flipping over. The MD11 was handicapped from birth as it was born of the DC10 which was never an esp brilliant design in the first place.
+Sci-fi Geek 123 (deal with it! XD) MD-11 airplanes have a problem with the landing. MD-11 needs the highest speed to land VS all the other airliners cause of the different arrangement of the engines and the wings. This set up creates more drag and that results that it needs more speed to maintain lift. Landing in higher speeds can result to landing gear failure (cant withstand the force of so hard landing). Other problem is that with that high speed the plane can "bounce" 1-3 times.
Sci-fi Geek 123 (deal with it! XD) The aircraft touched down at a very high sink rate (200 ft/min). The number 2 (right) engine struck the ground and very quickly the right wing detached. The aircraft rolled over, the fuel ignited. The MD11 veered off the runway and came to rest upside down.
Sci-fi Geek 123 (deal with it! XD) The MD11 attempted to land during a Typhoon wind speeds were up to 50 MPH and several Aircraft ahead had made missed approaches despite the Stormy Weather the Pilots continued the Approach just 30 feet from the Ground the pilot failed to flare the plane correctly the strong crosswind wind blew the Plane to the right wich was Unexpected. The MD11 Landed hard on its Right main Landing gear and the Right wing struck the Ground The right Fuel Tanks were Ruptured the aircraft still travelling at 190MPH flipped upsidown after the Right wing detached. Oboard the Flight were 315 Poeple olny 3 Were killed
Some think that, unlike the DC-10, the aileron is smaller and wings a bit shorter, making it less stable during windy conditions. Aside from that theory, it's a beautiful aircraft.
How on earth she is able to say Oh my God on 0.12 before the plane is not even crashed? 0:13 is crashing time so this woman has to have some sort of clairvoyant skills.
sulutkin actually she said OMG because she saw the right gear touched down really hard and probably broke off(based on reports) as the fire was only seen after the ignition of jet fuel when the right wing collapsed
+sulutkin At 0:12 you can see a black puff on the wing on the right side of the screen. It looks like the wing made contact with the runway or ground, causing fuel to ignite a split second later. The plane then pivots around the wing that is dug in and flips onto its back.
shit if it where any contry than america some 1 farther away would even call 911 or contact airport imedeantly instead of just standing there and saying omg
This is Why Delta Airlines Never Lands in Sheer Weather like This Anymore..Id rather them Close Operations, and Cancel Landings before trying too land in Freaking bad WX.....
too bad pilot first of all, the speed of the wind was too high and the most important strange thing is why didn't he try to flare or even kick the engines to FULL power instead of just watching the ground coming fast and wait to crash !!!

It's literally been 15 years since you posted this, are you going well today?
@@players_aviation : As well as can be expected since I'm 15 years older, retired, and don't move as well.

Crash landing 3 fatalities 312 survivors pilot error was the cause
Yo it flipped upside down at Hong Kong
Only 3 fatalities is a miracle tbh
they often do. Thanks for the info before. Yes, it seems to be like the crash in Tokyo this morning.
still think that guy saying "oh my god" sounds like mayor quimby from the simpsons haha

by the way, why do MD-11´s flip on their back everytime they crash during landing??????

how did they survive that big fire???

lol, the worst commentery ever!
@737airberlin :D it IS china airlines, I just re-read the description of the video

When was this?
The date and time in the lower left hand corner of the vid is pretty specific on that point.
I seem to remember not. It rolled over but I think everyone got out. Correct me if i'm wrong.
They may have been referring to a missed approach it terms of 'making it'
pilot ignored the maximum crosswind limit 24 knots for that plane. 3 dead, 312 people survived.
This isnt a crash Landing. The plane Crashed on landing due to the Tropical Thunderstorm that night
It wasn't China Airlines. It was China Eastern Airlines I believe. And it ended upside down. I think there were about 8 dead of the passengers.
What went wrong at the last moment? The approach seemed normal enough. Even at the pt of the touchdown, the aircraft seemed quite level and even!
hello human who is now ten years older than they were when they commented this
@@ElectroRail
12 years now, according to RUclips. That’s a long enough time to be statistically eligible for death in certain circumstances 🧐
So what happened exactly?
And why'd they stop filming.
So they landed too hard? :S Stall landed ? =/
What exactly happened?

I don't understand...why would they even be trying to land in weather like that? why not just stay above it and land somewhere else?
why the hell would you say " lets see if you can make it, looks a bit shaky" way to jinx it -.-
Some think that, unlike the DC-10, the aileron is smaller and wings a bit shorter, making it less stable during windy conditions. Aside from that theory, it's a beautiful aircraft.
Its Mandarin Airlines (China Airlines) Flight 642
In hong kong chek lap kok strong crosswinds
@737airberlin think it was china airlines or someth. like that
Miraculously there were only three casualies out of the 318 people on board.
i believe this was a typhoon that hit and the plane was low on fuel?
wow......
whoa that does sound like him!
omg you are lucky to have seen that in real life. Wish it was me
@countrytalk97 casualties? never! it's a plane crash!
"he's crashed!"
really?

hello this is no fedex this ist TWA Oder KLM
0:17 Man! OMG
He sounds like the mare of springfield (simpsons) haha
Ugh.
Atleast this video is real and doesn't involve rick astley in any way.
actually 3 people sadly lost there lifes in this accident
however, it is fedex md11 I have pogramm there can exactly recognise mann this they must write in text purely fedex md11
"He's crashed!" Thanks for stating the obvious.
Both pilots survived.
no that was just lights
@Jagermeister196 out of 315, including crew!
We need to think of a phrase beyond "Oh my god." It's getting boring.
No one was killed in this crash. 200 minor injuries after the right wing struck the ground according to the FAA accident web site.
well 5 planes diverted and 12 planes landed successfully.
"There's gonna be casualties!" No s..., Sherlock.
How on earth she is able to say Oh my God on 0.12 before the plane is not even crashed? 0:13 is crashing time so this woman has to have some sort of clairvoyant skills.

um, what happened????

this guys having a hard time, boom, hes crashed. WELL NO $%#* LADY, THAT USUALLY WHAT A PLAIN AND A FIREBALL HAVE IN COMMON.
@10311118 Yes it is!
"Its crashed!" Well done bullet!
Thats the runway lights
looks like he crossed perpendicular to the approach lights and crashed in a parking lot
Bet you kinda forgot about this comment until i replied to it didnt you so how was it 15 years ago
Damnation...
Landing HARD !
oh my God, it was scary as fuck man...
Just what they wanted eh? "let's go to the airport to see if we can film a plane crash in the storm".... Sickos
omg theres going to be casualties
I love getting people like you started. Its funny how easy it is.
Just what they wanted... "let's go down to the airport in the storm to see if we can see a plane crash" ......sickos
This why md-11 shouldn't be built
too bad pilot
first of all, the speed of the wind was too high
and the most important strange thing is why didn't he try to flare or even kick the engines to FULL power instead of just watching the ground coming fast and wait to crash !!!
The MD11 really was flawed. Every time it crash landed, it always flipped over. That reduced survivability significantly.
It's really weird... It always flips over to the right. This was also kinda pilot error but agreed. The plane is flawed.
I don't think they were Americans. Listen to the accent.
August 22 1999
if that aircraft is upside down that mean is FedEx
no this was mandarin airlines operating for china airlines and it was a crash in hong kong i know im 4 years late lol
i guess FedEx 14
no this was mandarin airlines flight 614 at hong kong, operating for china airlines check the description
oooooohhh..... thats bad
There goes my chinese food.
lmao! mayor quimby! it sounds just like him.
And the other pilot said FUCK
thats flight 14
the gaers broke
oh my god x6
Normal Ryanair landing
.....
it;s not china airlines ~~~~
''Its crashed'' no fucking shit
Better to fly British Airways me thinks
312of315 survived
D: sad
Nope flight 642
:(((
3 pax got killed
err....anyone killed in this?
3 people died. Only took 15 years.
SH*T said the pilot
