The cards were supposed to be worthless in the show too. In the original manga, Kaiba's inner monologue implies he was trying to scam grandpa.

I think most people have forgotten something. These are Yugioh Trading Cards. These are DUEL MONSTER cards. You can't just get a Blue Eyes White Dragon in this world just buy going to to the store and buying the starter deck that has a Blue Eyes White Dragon, any more than any trainer in the Pokemon Anime has a box legendary. There are FOUR, count that... only FOUR of these cards in the world. And Kaiba's got three of them. The other thing is that if it's a briefcase there is more than one layer of cards in there; there are probably a *LOT* more than initally displayed. Also the card game had not come out yet when the first season of the show came out, so the sacrifice rule, etc. was not a a thing.
Players started with 2000 life points in the first season, Red Medicine and other LP cards would be worth a lot more.
The sacrifice rule didn't exist in Duelist Kingdom, so the 5-6 star monsters didn't suck. (A lot of those would suck today).
Polymerization is garbage because it requires you to draw it AND have two other monsters before you can summon a generic monster with slightly better stats (there are some Fusion monsters that were objectively good). The only good thing about Fusion was you could have as many Fusion monsters you wanted and it didn't count against the limit of your deck or anything like that, but again, you have to actually draw the card AND the requisite monsters in the first place. There IS an effect monster that allows you to summon a Fusion mob of your choosing for 1 turn though...
While a lot of the cards in this deck aren't too special in the real world, they may have been Rare/Powerful, etc. in the anime. In the anime Stop Defense (the counterpart to Block Attack) was a permanent card. Block Attack in the anime would have made a player invincible. Also in Duelest Kingdom cards have powers/abilities the TCG doesn't have so we don't know what the anime versions of these are capable of.
Kaiba is the Lex Luthor of the Duel Monsters universe, so it's safe to assume those cards are worth a lot more than the RL versions we have in our world.

    • @SonicLion2
      @SonicLion2 5 месяцев назад +38

Polymerization isn't so garbage cause tecnically they could fusion any monsters in the classic era, they didn't exactly need to have the right pieces (like it was in Forbidden Memories). Same with Ritual Monsters, IIRC Yugi ritual summoned Dark Magician Chaos against Pegasus from nowhere.

Always appreciate a well thought out response. There are certainly more variables if we consider the impact that these cards had in the show versus the real world, as well as what these cards were valued at in the show. We know, at the very least, they were as good as cash, but we do NOT know what those prices looked like. I can't recall ever seeing cards actually purchased in the show, at least as far as DM and GX (haven't watched 5Ds and onward enough to be certain if it came up later). Someone pointed out in another comment that Grandpa did express that Kaiba's offer was a lucrative deal, so we can assume that dollar for dollar, Kaiba's briefcase was at least comparable with Blue-Eyes, if not exceeding by sheer quantity (even if those cards would've been a couple bucks each in the show), but Grandpa valued the meaning and sentiment behind the card more than the dollar, which muddies the argument a bit more because that becomes a reoccurring theme throughout the series; cards being worth more in meaning than value. A lot of people have pointed out that the Manga and original show in Japan may have had more means of valuing the cards as they would've been in their world, so I might have to get in some deep research and see if I can devise a way to value the cards based on how the show deems them.

Like others have said, it could have been there were multiple copies. And I was always under the assumption that there was over dozen stacks of cards in each spot... Because who's gonna have a briefcase of cards single filed like that and just 1-3 cards in each row? It'd have been more effective to stack them into one deck at that point. So around a deck worth of cards in each card spot would have made the briefcase an exorbitant amount of money.

So... if we're talking about the Literal Briefcase... it'd probably cost 40-50 at the low end to at most 100-200... Maybe more considering the exact dimensions it has for housing a 4x7 grid of yugioh cards... or less if we're assuming it's thin enough that it can only house 1 card on each vertical dimension.
If we're wondering talking about in universe the cards combined were possibly worth thousands to millions considering he had to bankrupt entire companies and make deals with yakuza/mafia types just to buy his original 3, and as an initial offer 1k-1000k sounds semi-reasonable.
If we're wondering how much the blue eyes is worth in the anime at this point... I mean that's more a question of how able you are to pry them out of Kaiba's cold dead hands since any number is too low.

I actually wanted to make this exact video, so congrats on beating me to it, but the thing I was going to do was consider the time period, as you are taking the TCG into account and the current year (2024), where you have mega game busters to contend with, which is why many of these cards have dropped in price. Maybe these cards would have been worth more back when the game began, so I would have worked out the prices back between 1999-2003 and probably used the OCG as a basis.

On the early seasons the high level monsters didn't need tributes so the Blue eyes was the best normal summon on the entire game and it is one of the rarest cards on the world so even if Kaiba's briefcase was full of cards it probably was worth less than that single Blue Eyes Withe Dragon

I just found out, Kaiba's briefcase is an actual product you can purchase and you get all ULTRA RARE cards... 61 exactly amongst them all Blue-Eyes White Dragons Kaiba owns. Which are... 5? Ok...
If you ever wanted to own Dark Energy in Ultra Rare to flex on your opponent, this is your chance apparently. Jokes aside, there are some good cards... but also stuff like Dark Energy... Sry, I just can't wrap my head around that freaking Dark Energy got an Ultra Rare reprint. 300 atk boost to my Summon Skull never felt this powerful. And Ultra Rare Rude Kaiser... This makes me really wish the actual cards in his briefcase were printed in Ultra Rare so we could brag about it. I will want my Thunder level 5 Escargot Normal Monster monster and, hey, some of these cards are OGC exclusive. But I guess it's ok because we got new Anime Cards... and Dark Energy. Sry, I just can't get over this.

It's ironic how kaiba pretty much knew the value of that card, before you had to sell your left leg to get one. Skelgon was in the games before it was released in the TCG, this used to happen quite a lot, but it seems like a lot more cards are reprinted nowadays.

    • @burblebineabbletv

I always assymed there was a complete playset of each under there, if not even more cards because the case itself looks decently thick but the cards sit at the edge of the case. So multiple this case by 3 and its worth $1,398.09

Nice video concept. But the value of Grandpa's Blue-Eyes White Dragon is priceless because it is the only one that wasn't owned by the eccentric Seto Kaiba. Also like I've seen in other comments; this is just the modern day TCG/OCG card values of the top layer with no idea what's underneath. I'd take a guess that there are at least 8 layers to that case based on card thickness (not taking into account that foam padding could have been used).

As a kid, I'm yelling at gramps to accept the trade, thinking he could just go to Walgreens and get another $10 SDK, but keep in mind, this Blue Eyes gramps had was 1 of the 4 in existence, so if those quantities applied in real life, this Blue Eyes would be as valuable as a Pikachu Illustrator.

So I get the point but the big flaw to Kaiba being cheap is in the original cards like those weren't cheap most cards above 2000 were hard to come by and cost money that's why someone like Joey who didn't have money had a deck of generic monsters on average of less that 1800 points versus Kaiba's briefcase had an average of 2000. But is he still an ass yes, yes he is.

That could be a cool video idea too, love the video man and you made a good point about the 25th anniversary of metal raiders getting released and I realized that when I found a sangan in my binder of old cards and I looked up how much it was thinking I found something good and it was like .50 cents lol

Besides the fact that, as someone brought up, its a different universe, I would at least think that Kaibas collection is the most pristine collection possible. Sure, in the manga, he was scamming people, but my idea of Kaiba is that he highly values collecting the original run of the game. The way he judges value is based on the game from that time period.
So I would say either use the OCG value or PSA grafe value of all his cards, at the very least. Sure, they dont show it as such, but thats because that would probably make everything look really weird. Becket was highly interested in games like Yugioh at the time though and I even remember as a kid in the 90s seeing graded Pokemon cards, especially Charizard, take on the same level of prestige, likely inspiring the hype around BEWD for the manga.

You're right. When I'd originally thought of the idea for the video, I wanted to go full big brain mode and determine the size of the briefcase and relate that to (potentially) how many cards were in each stack and try to price it out that way, but I ran into the issue of ultimately just guessing what else was in the briefcase so I could've given the briefcase a final evaluation of pretty much anything and it was less coherent. So, I settled on this, and while it's the most concise evaluation, I feel better giving it a value based on the cards that we can see and definitively say "*these* are worth *this* much" Thanks for the comment! 🤙

To be fair, the series implies that some cards are super hard to come by. We only know of three existing Dark Magicians and four Blue Eyes White Dragons in the entire world. And we very rarely see more than one person use a card other than Pot of Greed or the like. That Blue Eyes would probably be worth millions. Though many of the cards in that briefcase are probably worth several thousand dollars. And I have to assume there are hundreds of cards we can’t see in the briefcase. Though probably still not a fair trade.

I might try to look back at the original Mangas and Japanese Anime/Season 0 to see if there's any better indication of what Kaiba might have had in the briefcase.

Kaiba would prob have full play sets of each card. so you could safely just tripple the final price, but that would just be by real world prices. In the anime all of his cards were pretty unique, in that he was the only one who used them. So in the anime the cards may have been alot more valuable than their real world counter parts when you consider pegasus did really over produce cards. Proof was that only 4 blue eyes were ever printed, and for the ENTIRETY of the series Kaiba was the only person to have the final 3 blue eyes after the 4th was ripped. So i would assume the cards in his brief case were also of similar rarity, but of course not as powerful as the blue eyes which was indeed the most powerful monster in the anime at that time aside from exodia.

@@burblebineabbletv Tearlament Players would've murdered for that briefcase when it was full of mushroom man2 and the Card was once hyped for Tearlament a year ago or so

I have a lot of those LOB and Metal Raiders fusions in a box somewhere. Had no no idea they were actually worth a few dollars lol. I assumed they were worth like 2 cents each.

I always assumed the briefcase of was full of cards, not just the visible cards. Kaiba probably brought 90% of the cards.

It’s funny to think about, kaiba really just showed up with a 10k of bulk and said give me your prized possession

To be fair, the briefcase is probably worth more than what most people make in a year. Have you seen what designer and high-end ones cost?

I can't even think about those brands without going into debt

You should probably multiply the total by the likely thickness of the briefcase (approximately 40 cards deep)
