This is so true. I certainly do believe Light was a psychopath, and I'm sure Light himself knew the same. However, I feel like L was the only one who made Light question his own character, even if only for a second.
Yeah, i felt so bad after watching that scene T-T They could have been really good friends if Light wasn't Kira, i would have loved to see a genuine friendship between them two
It really does break my heart cause when light wiped his face for him I actually thought he cared for L deep down in his heart... just to see L die and light smiling upon his dead body..curse you light..😭
Lol L is light's enemy of cpurse he would smile. Death note isnt a love story its literally about a light trying to be a god and L trying to find enough evidence that light is kira
L did it because he realized Yagami is Kira and know that he is going to kill him. He is trying in a way to make Yagami understand that there are more to life than winning, and L is disappointed in him, and wants him to kinda see the important things in life, for example friendship. And we can also see that there are a bonding between them, a strong bonding. But Kira is cold.. no matter what, and that's really sad..
This is such a profound moment in the show, the religious imagery, the profound tragedy of it all, L knowing that he is going to die. And despite all of it L is still making a mockery of Kira's proclaimed godhood. This is such a good scene.
Exactly my interpretation, this isnt fanservice or a nod to L and Light’s supposed friendship or the “what ifs”. Its mockery. Light’s desire to be god is, in the end, supremely vain and childish. L knows he lost the game but still harbors justified contempt for his adversary. Light is so self absorbed and focused on winning that he doesn’t even pick up on this.
I saw this scene without the context of the fandoms interpretation and immediately thought “oh is L gonna join Misa and Light. It seems like they’re setting up a poly relationship. It’ll be nice if L becomes a kira as well” and oh boy did my sliver of hope get shattered
this is so fucking sad . remember when L said he hoped Light wasn't Kira, because he was his first friend??? and now he's just defeated, accepting that he'll die soon. bruh i'm fucking sobbing they should've kissed
The author probably lied as well, he genuinely liked Kira, I know the author said otherwise but the likelihood is just too much for him to not see him as a friend, everything just leads up to that. You wouldn't even THINK of Misa hating Light even if the author said so. The difference is that Misa and Light are obvious and L and light are very subtle.
Lol. But I also think this scene can be associated with the Bible, when Jesus washed the disciples feet. Jesus was giving them a visual representation of His love. He even washed the feet of the man that was about to betray Him. Washing the feet was normally done by the host or a servant that the host had. Since no one did this, Jesus humbled himself and did it. Showing them that "the greatest must become the least."
This has to be my favorite scene in the entire show. The pure symbolism it has and the impact of what everyone including L and Light knows is going to happen is just incredible. He washes his feet as a sign of respect while Light looks down on him because they both know he has won and it’s all just a matter of time.
I know this is an old comment, but it sounds like L is actually saying "寂しいですね" (sabishii desune), which is literally, "Lonely, isn't it?" Not sure why the subtitles went with sorrow instead, but L knowing Light will be lonely makes it even more obvious that L knows he's dying soon.

Although I am not religious, I like to see the imagery in this scene reflecting the scene in the Bible where (forgive me I do not know names) one man washers anothers feet or something similar before he is betrayed and killed. I think that is what the director of Death Note was aiming for, actually, not fanservice.
Okay but in this scene I can’t help but think this was kind of Light’s last moment of human compassion Like he seemed to look at L as if he genuinely cared about him a little, or at least didn’t see him as the person he’s wanted dead for the whole series for a second. I dunno he just seemed... softer? In the scene. And it makes me sad. Imma go cry now.
The amount of times L says sorry here is so out of character here. It's heartbreaking. Beautifully done. L knew his fate was coming, and that he couldn't stop it. Instead of trying to stop Light, or say something, he spends his last moments of life treating Light as a friend, and as a brother. Fantastic use of Biblical symbolism.
It truly is, it’s not like L at all. He shows sympathy and I really don’t know how he showed such great kindness when he was about to die. The biblical reference here is astounding.
L washes Light's feet. For those who don't know, I believe this is a Biblical reference to the act of Jesus Christ when he washed the feet of his disciples, namely Judas, the one who would betray him. And that matches this perfectly. L washes the feet of someone who claimed to be his friend, but would play the hand in his demise.
@@amelia9994 in one of the books of the manga (i think it's called how to read), it's stated that L never liked Light, but hated him, so he was basically lying. And he was probably sad because he knew he couldn't bring kira to justice, in his eyes, he failed
@@amelia9994 I think he liked Light, but the fact that he was Kira overshadowed that likeness and made L feel more hate than anything else. If Light wasn't Kira they would have been good frineds.
I feel like this scene was not only just a biblical reference to the whole Jesus washing Judas's feet, but also as the point where the 'what if' was brought up. During the time Light had the note book (deathnote) and developed his god complex, he developed an alternate personality known as Kira - which happened unintentionally. For all we know, Kira is ruthless and cold and will do whatever it takes to complete his goals - much unlike Light himself. However, I feel its safe to say that L was the last string to his humanity that 'Kira' was desperate to get rid off. There have been a few subtle moments where we dont find him having some weird villaneous monologue but genuinely enjoying his time with L and i'm pretty sure L felt the same, even if they both pretended the whole thing for interrogation. During the time he lost the notebook, we see more of this - well except for the factor of distrust thanks to Kira. I'm pretty sure L was aware of the whole thing, he didnt hate Light, he hated Kira. Light was never his enemy and vice versa. This scene is also - to me - a point where L felt regret and disappointment because he knew he was going to die and probably wondered on the possibilities, and the most human Light had looked since he touched the deathnote. Its a man sized what if - like if Light was never Kira, maybe they could have been best friends [or something more]. Kira knew L wasnt just a threat to his power - he was a threat to his sanity and the last thread of humanity in him. I'm just saying...
I didn’t cry this episode I was just angry and felt defeated, now while rewatching it and understanding the real meaning of this I just started crying. I miss L man and I feel he deserved to still be there to win the battle.
In this scene there was so much I could feel for L, I fell for him cuz I saw him so vulnerable and fragile who was only here for his purpose and he died for this purpose and nobody to really care for him cuz he was so alone

even when L died, just as planned, i think light catching him and staying with him intimately as he died was him being real. before he started laughing from his own madness and narcissism, there was this moment where light was just a boy, and he was losing someone he cared about
The moment L revealed himself to Light, he knew he was Kira. I feel like Ls job was to catch Light ofc by throwing him curveballs like that. But many people dont talk about how it changed, cause they became friends. I think L was depressed cuz he knew Light was Kira but at the same time he was his friend. Especially in the scene where it rains and L washes Kiras feet. He looked so depressed, I think L knew he was gonna die, or he knew he was going to lose Light one way or another. It seemed to be very important to him, more important than to Kira. Im going to rewatch this anime cause I just remember their friendship alot and I feel people gloss over that.
I was watching this episode once when my uncle came in, who's never watched/read DN in his life, and he said, "Woah, are they supposed to like eachother?" XD
i don't ship them at all but... holy shit i feel the sexual tension - it's literally RADIATING off the screen and into my soul lowkey jealous of light rn 😩that should be me, bro
I wonder if L knew he was going to die when he said he's sad and that they will be bidding farewell soon...he sounded so lonely. I always thought that Light and L had a special relationship between each other, beyond friends, as equals. It felt really sad when L died like he lost something really important to him like his sanity... :'[
"Its nearly time to say farewell" This is the translation that I got when watching the scene where L here says "You'll understand." He suspected that today was the day he was gonna die and that Light was the person.
This scene always makes me blush. XD I mean, I've watched hardcore yaoi, but this scene. I don't know what it is about it. The first time I saw it, it was so unexpected, because I read the manga and obviously that scene wasn't in there.
altoidsours actually I’m confident the entire seen is a reference to the biblical story of Jesus washing his disciples feet before he was betrayed by one of them. That was the first thing I thought of when I watched the seen, but I can see how it can look gay without that knowledge lol
I think L considered light a friend because light was only a person with intelligence like L and can understand his thoughts . But L was sad because they will never be able to become friends.
from my perspective when i watched this scene. i reckoned that L visited Watari before. so i thought this scene means a hint from L to Light that L wanted Light to stop what he's doing bcs its been hard for L all this time. it hurts him capturing Light. L somehow liked Light bcs Light is an interesting puzzle for L. this scene also can become a hint from L to Light that L knows that hes going to die so this is his last chance for telling Light that L likes Light or might find him interesting. the conclusion is, L only had a private moment of gratitude with Watari and Light before he died.
And Light definitely like him as well But the things is it was too late for L to genuine about his emotions. Throughout he has been a liar (of course Light as well) they both fought to win the game, deceiving eo in the process It was too late for any of them to back out because both are egoist like that L had seen Light without memories was a nice guy, he could have tried to save him as well as Light would have been a great detective without dn (as per writer) but he was set on proving him to be Kira and get him executed or imprisoned. It was not about justice, it was about winning game over Light I don't see why Light would have agreed to step back seeing L wouldn't. so he just went for the kill even if he was attached to him as well
When I first saw this part I was like "Woah. Is something going to happen?! OwO" But it didn't. I never thought about the whole feet washing thing like Jesus and Judas. That's interesting.
i've always thought that L meant that he knew he was gonna die. he knew it all, he knew light was gonna kill him, and he knew it would be soon. L still gave light his love, besides it all, and that just makes it even sadder.
"In the Bible, Jesus washes the of sinners-explained as simply as possible, this is to show that he not consider himself to be “above” or “greater” than them. washing symbolizes that while is “the good guy” and is evil, still sees them as equals-both morally and intellectually."
This is a beautiful and painful scene. L Finally making a friend, well as much as someone like him is capable, with an uncorrupted Light. Light and L who could’ve had a deep friendship and partnership finding criminals together but only meet specifically BECAUSE Light found the DeathNote. They were two asteroids destined to destroy each other, and I think L realizes this.
This maybe a biblical reference but you can't deny the fact that there was so much sexual tension between them here. Overall such an intimate emotional moment of these two ❤️
I'm not even religious but damn this scene was heartbreaking, knowing it’s a biblical reference to when "Jesus" wiped Judas’s feet knowing all the anguish he is about to experience in the near future, It just adds a whole other layer to this scene. The fact that this was an anime original scene to us mind blowing. I totally think this scene was necessary as it adds way more depth to L’s death afterwards. I think for once in the entire anime or at-least in my perspective Light felt guilty, or maybe even happy because he saw L was maybe losing hope and he’s finally win as he wanted.
This was the scene that made me realize L was about to die.

Like he seemed to look at L as if he genuinely cared about him a little, or at least didn’t see him as the person he’s wanted dead for the whole series for a second.

That's because this is not in the manga
sexual tension aside lmfaoo l looked so sad in this scene,, my heart :((
Yes😢
L washes Light's feet.
For those who don't know, I believe this is a Biblical reference to the act of Jesus Christ when he washed the feet of his disciples, namely Judas, the one who would betray him.
And that matches this perfectly. L washes the feet of someone who claimed to be his friend, but would play the hand in his demise.
Bruh there are plenty comments like this
So did L actually liked light as a friend? When he said that he's sad ,is it because his one friend betrayed him?
@@amelia9994 in one of the books of the manga (i think it's called how to read), it's stated that L never liked Light, but hated him, so he was basically lying.
And he was probably sad because he knew he couldn't bring kira to justice, in his eyes, he failed
@@Giose That actually makes sense, thank you so much
@@amelia9994 I think he liked Light, but the fact that he was Kira overshadowed that likeness and made L feel more hate than anything else.
👏

That chemistry tho...
I didn’t cry this episode I was just angry and felt defeated, now while rewatching it and understanding the real meaning of this I just started crying. I miss L man and I feel he deserved to still be there to win the battle.

even when L died, just as planned, i think light catching him and staying with him intimately as he died was him being real. before he started laughing from his own madness and narcissism, there was this moment where light was just a boy, and he was losing someone he cared about
HOTTEST part of the whole show.
Mhmmm
Hey, you are 12 years older now.
are you still alive?-
How's life 12 years later
How’s your life now??
Man this made me cry, L was a very good person.

THE SEXUAL TENSION
I can't help but feel that if it weren't for the Death Note, Light and L would've been good friends...this is so sad.
this was the saddest yet the sweetest thing i ever watched in my anime journey
L just kinda showed alotta emotion in this scene like he knows he was about to die...
to me, they were the definition of right person, wrong time. two sides of the same coin. so similar, yet, so different from each other.

that should have been me, not him ITS NOT FAIR!!
I wonder if L knew he was going to die when he said he's sad and that they will be bidding farewell soon...he sounded so lonely. I always thought that Light and L had a special relationship between each other, beyond friends, as equals. It felt really sad when L died like he lost something really important to him like his sanity... :'[
Wow, 17 years ago. This video sure is old
Curse that Phone!!!!!!!!!!!

"Its nearly time to say farewell" This is the translation that I got when watching the scene where L here says "You'll understand." He suspected that today was the day he was gonna die and that Light was the person.
“What happened to the old comments?”
“Gone, reduced to atoms.”
“are we about to kiss rn?”

L somehow liked Light bcs Light is an interesting puzzle for L. this scene also can become a hint from L to Light that L knows that hes going to die so this is his last chance for telling Light that L likes Light or might find him interesting. the conclusion is, L only had a private moment of gratitude with Watari and Light before he died.
man that hurt me even more just stop already
😢
And Light definitely like him as well
But the things is it was too late for L to genuine about his emotions.
Throughout he has been a liar (of course Light as well) they both fought to win the game, deceiving eo in the process
It was too late for any of them to back out because both are egoist like that
L had seen Light without memories was a nice guy, he could have tried to save him as well as Light would have been a great detective without dn (as per writer) but he was set on proving him to be Kira and get him executed or imprisoned. It was not about justice, it was about winning game over Light
I don't see why Light would have agreed to step back seeing L wouldn't. so he just went for the kill even if he was attached to him as well
That’s a lot of “L”s
Please-i just wanna hug L in this scene, he looks so depressed😭
Well , I want to believe that the feeling of light was pure when he dried my hair.
When I first saw this part I was like "Woah. Is something going to happen?! OwO" But it didn't.
