My last bike was a Harley 883, I had it for 3 years and just one problem after the other. It seemed like almost every time I went for a cruise on it something broke and i just got to the point where I'd say before I decided to ride it, "Wonder what will break this time?" and I got to where I just didn't enjoy riding it at all. Got a Honda Shadow Phantom in 2015 and as much as I hate to admit it, it;s just a better built bike. It's reliable and predictable. It's easy to ride and I enjoy very much riding it.
preston121068 A Harley salesman once told me, "your not just buying a bike, your buying a lifestyle!" I've had 2 VTX's and currently own a Goldwing and a VRod. 100,000+ miles on Honda's without a trip to the shop. I'm not even going to talk about the VRod...
Bullshit. I admire japanese cruisers and like the shadow phantom’s styling but for you to say that a sporster 883 gave you problems, I don’f buy it. I ride my 2016 iron every single day. Upgraded almost everything that can be upgraded including a 1200cc kit and never gave me a problem even once. Yes harleys are more expensive to maintain but if you know how to work on your bike, you don’t have to bring it to a stealership for a simple change oil and shit. Will I sell my sporty for a shadow? I doubt it. A 2018 street bob is what I’m aiming for but I’ll keep my sporty for life. Evo engines are bulletproof.
Gregory Uehara the question is why did you have to upgrade ANYTHING on your Harley? I don’t see anything that needs upgrading on my shadow. Cept im adding more headlights for safety.
Depends - if you want engineering, quality, innovation and a company that has changed motorcycling forever, "this isn't even up for debate" like a previous commenter stated, Honda. Honda has built over 300 million motorcycles, won LeMans, designed jets, cars, trucks, robots, etc... They have among the most technologically advanced R&D engineering department in the world. If you want big metal, old antiquated design, push-rod engines, that vibrate (a sign of poor engineering) and make a lot of noise but have a very strong marketing department, invest in selling an image instead of R&D (other than asking Porsche AG to design another engine for them) , go Harley. Incidentally, nearly all high tech parts on a Harley (except for their 6-speed gearbox) were designed and/or produced by Japanese, Taiwan, Italian, and Chinese engineers and suppliers. Now if you are into nostalgia, vintage motorcycles, go Harley, Ciao, L (FoMoCo engineering and USN Veteran)
Hi Half Dog, if this is your first bike - I would recommend first to get into a motorcycling class (if you have not ridden a bike before or in many years). They provide the bikes (usually ~250 cc) and make you feel comfortable with them. You will learn a lot (I know I did and I have been riding since 1969). Go to a friendly dealership (or a friendly motorcycle rider) and try a few bikes - see how it feels... how YOU feel. Be very honest with yourself, put the image aside (regardless of the make you chose), it is your bike, nobody else's bike, so it is important that you feel good on it, you enjoy it, and you feel "safe" riding it. That is what matters the most. If you consider the engineering, research, design, dependability, technology, etc. the Honda is years ahead of a Harley (I am an automotive engineer). Also, look at Consumer's Reports ratings on motorcycle (2015 testings, I think - on the web), Harley was second to last. Check motorcycle magazine reviews - European reviewers are usually more objective and less prejudiced in their reviews than American magazines, you will lean a lot. On the other hand - a motorcycle is not a jet aircraft or rocket science. They have improved considerably over the last 30+ years (except for some emission control system, depending on the state). Unless you are going to race your motorcycle or push it to the extreme (which I do not recommend), what matters the most, is how the motorcycle "fits" you, for YOU to enjoy it. It matters less what I or other people think, YOU are the rider and it is YOUR motorcycle, so go for it! Enjoy it and ride safe, it is a great sport. Ciao, L
lancelot1953 I'm taking my class in april, I plan on test driving a Honda Shadow, and a Scout sixty with ABS. I'll see which I like the best. Thank you :)
Hi Half Dog, my best to you. Riding is great and the motorcycle community is a very friendly and supportive fraternity. And one more thing, always wear a helmet, long pants, jackets, hard sole shoes/boots, and gloves (think about the "unthinkable"). See you on "two wheels", take care, Ciao, L
Give an old Honda Shadow VTX 600 a Cobra Pipe for example, without DB killer in it, and it is as loud, as a original Harley. Look the Videos from the RUclipsr Bobbercat and you will hear. 😉
They both sound good. The Honda is almost 150cc's smaller then the HD and still sounds like a bigger bike. I have owned both bikes. You can spend a lot of money on the HD to trying to improve it and make it a better all around bike for the Highway and around town. The Honda is pretty good right off the showroom floor.
mmm false. having owned a sportster and then going to a 750 "harvey flooded the HD" i can honestly say the sportster needs less work to be a comfy highway bomber than the 750.
@@ZombieZim713 Disagree, just switches from a sportster 883 to a shadow vt750 and have no idea why I bothered paying for the badge in the first place. Hate to admit but Honda are killing it.
Ive had my sporty since 05 and it just rolled over 65,000 and Ive never had to do anything besides oil changes and tires and brakes. And its never leaked or spit any oil
You are lucky! My 08 was nothing but problems. Finally had it with the Harley dealerships and service after they had to a head job. I machined the parts myself and had them re assemble it on their dime. They got Shitty! Was going to update to a newer sportster 1200. But vowed to not deal with harley again! So I got a used Suzuki SV650 and never have problems with it! Reasently a Honda Shadow Spirit 750 found its way to my garage to keep the SV650 company and am very Happy with both bikes! 😸 I bought a used
I’ve owned a 2001 Sportster 883 and now I own a 2011 Honda Shadow Phantom. The Shadow fits my height better. The Sportster is said to be more powerful. However, at the time I owned the Sportster, I weighed around 200 lbs. I currently weigh just under 170, so I don’t feel a significant difference in power. Also, my Honda is fuel injected and shaft driven. Whereas my Sportster was carburated with a belt drive.
hd has a cool look, sound, and image but a dependability reputation ranging from pos to good. the honda has a very cool look and sound, mediocre image, and a comparatively stellar reputation. I didn't buy a bike to fit into a group. I bought it to ride how, where, and when I wanted to get that feel. you'll get more looks on an hd but i don't need em. cheaper, more dependable, less rumble in the seat (ie more comfy-imho), I defied my brother and got the phantom. I don't ever see myself layin down 20k+ for one, but I'd take the goldwing every time over the ultra. 6 and a shaft are definitely better than 2 and a chain
Had an 05 harley dyna glide loved the bike but bought a 98 honda vt1100 aero and I'm very happy with it,the harley would cook my legs in the texas heat and on the hi way the honda is alot smoother
I have always been a Honda man myself, I was watching a review on a new 883 yesterday and the guy was talking about how they "spit oil" due to their engines not being the most sealed design! He was like "that's what Harleys are all about, so you tend to get a bit of oil on your pipes and shoes sometimes!" LOL, I am all about the experience but buying a new bike that has oil spitting out of the engine while I ride is not something I would relish!
For Harley fan boy that is normal they said it's normal for them that the bike in a cornering capability is like a brick on a sea , can't break and spit oil...and the reability is what it is... LOOOOOOL But they talk Shit about japanese bikes and european...
Tom Chiplick If your bike is spitting oil, regardless of what bike is, you have a big problem. Engines do not spit Oilers and that for sure is not a Harley characteristic.

I Own a Honda Shadow And The Quality Of The Bike Is Bullet Proof And It Will Last You Decades Longer Compared To Any Harley Davidson. But If You Are Looking For Faster Speed Then Get The Harley Because They Are Definitely The Faster Bike Off The Line And Down The Road.
Tony in Tasmania It's the drive line that really make difference when it comes to speed.
