Chase this is ABBA's first attempt to represent Sweden in the annual Eurovision Song Contest in 1973. Ring Ring was entered into Sweden's Melodifestivalen 1973, whose winner would represent Sweden in the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest. ABBA failed to represent Sweden, so they tried again in 1974 and was selected to represent Sweden with the song Waterloo and won the Eurovision Song Contest 1974. Eurovision Song Contest is an original song competition between European countries. The competition has been going on since 1956 to unite war-torn Europe after WWII. The Eurovision Song Contest is the biggest TV show in the world.

Ah, very early ABBA. They were still finding themselves musically.
ABBA had a standard backing band they always used in the studio and live. Not ABBA members as such but always there doing their thing.

The reason it's just 3 minutes long is because it was an entry to Melodifestivalen (the Swedish selection show that selects Sweden's entry to Eurovision). "Ring Ring" came 3rd in Melodifestivalen 1973.
But in 1974 they won both Melodifestivalen and Eurovision with "Waterloo".

I want to leave you a separate comment
You will have noticed that many of us, including myself,
in your reaction to "Ring Ring" cited Eurovision and the song "Waterloo"
At the time ABBA was formed, Swedish music and artists did not have much global,
    or even European, significance.
That's why the classic Eurovison song contest was like a launching pad for many unknown artists.
ABBA's manager knew this very well,
and was confident that Björn and Benny were going to achieve international success as composers.
That's why when they were invited to the Melodiefestivalen in 1973
(the Swedish preselection to classify the representative for Eurovision)
he thought about the possibility of incorporating Agnetha and Frida to that invitation,
and that's how the four of them presented themselves, under the name of
"Björn and Benny, Agnetha and Frida" singing "Ring Ring"
They came out only third, (with Agnetha physically limited due to being 8 months pregnant)
but the Swedish public made "Ring Ring" the musical event of the year
From that defeat the basis of the next attempt is born
The following year, under the definitive name of ABBA,
they recorded a song in the same style but even more powerful: "Waterloo."
and with it they swept first in Sweden,
and then in the Eurovision grand final held in Brighton UK exactly 50 years ago
"Waterloo" will be ABBA's first great global hit,
and in my opinion the most important song in its history,
and its victory in Eurovision I consider it the most important musical act of the 70s.
"Waterloo" is less than 3 minutes long,
it is the 13th ABBA song with the most views on RUclips
and the 7th with the most downloads on Spotify
My suggestion is that you search on RUclips for the live performance
with which ABBA won Eurovision exactly 50 years ago.
because it is a historical fact, for ABBA and for music
and the official video is very similar to this one for "Ring Ring",
given that they were filmed on consecutive days and in the same room
(the only thing that changes are the outfits and the three backup musicians are not there)
put in the youtube search engine: ABBA Eurovision Waterloo
and you will now have all the downloads available
and that performance is absolutely live,
it is the only time you will see ABBA competing (actually there is a previous one, in Sweden)
and until now you have not seen ABBA live, only official videos with their recorded studio tracks
all that ABBA was and still is now, was born these magic night in Brighton UK
when ABBA shock all the world with the iconic banger "Waterloo"

We're SO lucky to have all these videos from back then. Videos were not a thing then like they are now. MTV didn't even debut until mid 1981. One reason we have a lot of these older video clips is because of concerts, but most of all for T.V. shows. ABBA and The Carpenters are both rare in the fact that they created actual videos for almost every song they put out as a single, and even some songs that weren't. The reason is because they were so huge that they couldn't possibly be touring constantly or in all the countries to make appearances on shows to promote new singles. So by creating videos they could just be sent to T.V. shows around the world for promotion. If you notice, ABBA was particularly savvy in recording songs that would specifically cater to different parts of the world. "Fernando" and "Chiquitita" for the Latin markets, "Mamma Mia" Italian, "Voulez-Vous" French, and so on. Brilliant marketing. And get this. Over the course of the 1970s ABBA were second only to Volvo cars as Sweden’s biggest export! How amazing is THAT?!?

  • @abbagus1
    @abbagus1 Год назад +2

Remember there was no RUclips when the craze for them existed so these million views are out of curiosity from new generations. They were the first though that produced videos to promote their singles worldwide in tv , probably the one group that has more videos produced cos they didn’t like to live traveling. Their success promoting this way gave the idea to invent MTV , when they were promoting their last album in 1982. They were also the first group on CD when it was invented , nevertheless their big sales were before this format was commercialized

Great song and reaction. This was in the early 70s glam rock era hence the costumes. You can see these actual costumes and many others in the ABBA Museum in Stockholm. Bjorns spikey guitar and Bennys first accordian (his first and favorite instrument ) are there too. They wear these exact same costumes in the video (Honey Honey) another great early ABBA song. FYI Frida, the red haired girl and Bennys wife, was an incredible seamstress and knitter that absolutely loved clothes. She took fashion design classes in case singing didn't work out. In the beginning when they didn't have much money it was Frida that sewed and designed their costumes. Later Owe Sandstrom came in later to help but Frida still had a big say in the costumes. It was her and Owe who designed the iconic cat dresses. He hand painted them and Frida came up with the idea to have a long skirt fastened by velcro at the waist to be taken off and reveal the micro mini skirt version with white boots. Take care

    Hello again, dear young friend
Thank you for making "Ring Ring",
when ABBA was not called that
    I remember that when I was young (now I am almost 65 years old) there was no cell phone or internet, and not everyone had a telephone;
and when I left my parents protested because I hung up the phone to talk to my girlfriend, or was waiting for her call, and I didn't want them to use it and occupy it
    what times those hahaha
"Ring ring" was composed to go to Eurovision 1973 but was third in the Swedish preselection:(Melodiefestivalen)
there they went with Agnetha with a very advanced first pregnancy (at eight months, you can see in some photos)
"Ring Ring" is the third single (and first album) from the future quartet ABBA
(in these times they called themselves as
'Bjorn and Benny; Agnetha and Frida')
"Ring Ring" is the only ABBA song in english that have another more songwriters It's because their manager Stig Anderson called to Neil Sedaka for an english lyrics , and he did it with Pill Cody
surely because of Agnetha's pregnancy and her postpartum, the future ABBA did not have many chances to promote "Ring Ring"
That is why there is even a curious one:
a TV presentation from 1973 performing
"Ring Ring" without the presence of Agnetha,
with Inger (a friend of Frida) in her place
    after Agnetha's postpartum
the future ABBA makes a presentation in Denmark
and there they film two videos:
"Ring Ring" and "Love isn't easy"
This official video is from 1974
After the victory in Eurovision with "Waterloo", ABBA begins with their official videos, and in two days they filmed both:
    "Waterloo" and "Ring Ring"
the costumes they wear are superheroes, to be different from those of Waterloo
ABBA remixed the original recording from 1973, when they first applied the 'wall of sound' technique
ABBA decided to release "Ring Ring" again in the UK and other countries in 1974, as the follow-up single after "Waterloo", but it barely reached number 32 in the UK.
For me it is a very good song (8pts) it had its success a little beyond Sweden in 1973 and other European countries
It's glam rock style, like the next, the glorious and iconic banger masterpiece "Waterloo"
    and last date
"Ring Ring" was first ABBA song recorded in spanish language (also other languages), but not released in their time (that's why "Chiquitita" is first ABBA song released in spanish language)
And now to the 50th anniversary of "Ring Ring" album ABBA did the official video in 4k and released a new special edition of the album
See you next time God bless you!
my best regards to you from
    Buenos Aires Argentina 🇦🇷
    South America
