- If you have a gambling addiction, I believe it's important to be honest and transparent with how much money you've lost. Hiding this information from your friends and family will only make it worse, and could possibly ruin your life.

Literally, this is so similar to myself, its' scary. Derek, you are a real hero with your shares. My dream was also to play the WSOP, but the $1500 Limit event. (Which I did last year.) In all my years, it was the hardest table I ever played in. I literally got quads, four times within the span of a few hours, as everyone folded. I eventually got eliminated on Day One. I then tried to get the money back playing pai gow poker, along with other tournaments, to no avail. I got eliminated from a $600 buy in mixed stud/limit hold'em tournament final table and got $0. (Only paid 4 places.) All in all I have nothing to show for DECADES of gambling. I am nearly 50. Like you, I have put many years into fitness, but building a body does not necessarily mean building a life. Thanks for your channel, as I try to figure out what else to do, in order to achieve something with my life.
Damn wild story brotha! Poker is such a crazy game. Wishing u all the best in the future bro
I'm in pain l lost k23000 on gambling and now my life has changed to poverty and homeless 😢😢😢😢😢😢 l don't even know we're to start from but l promise my self that l will not gamble in my life again
I could be 20k richer but I'm -8.3k right now..
Pray for me.
Thank you for this. I’m realizing I have an addiction and trying to fight it.
Glad the video helped Drew. Hopefully it motivated you to make a positive change in your life!
Great video…. Your story telling was on point. This is the most genuine I have seen you and I really think the key takeaway of this tale will open a lot eyes. I also got served an online gambling app advertisement during this video. Those greedy jerks! 😂
Thanks my brotha. Hopefully by sharing our past mistakes we can help the younger generation who is coming up. Lol at the gambling ad 😅
Somehow this shows up in my algorithm, so I click it. Watched it the entire way through so I guess it knows I would. Never heard of you or the channel, but your pacing and storytelling kept me in it all the way. ( I was rooting for you to mincash and win 80k and then blow THAT all at once)
LMAO I wonder what I would have done if I won 80k. Probably would have stayed another week in Vegas and gone broke hahahaha.
Agree with this comment completely. You have a real skill for telling a good story. Even the little details like just quickly explaining what blinds are as you continue your story. It helps make sure the listener can follow along, even if not as knowledgeable about the game or terminology. Subscribed! 😁
This is why bankroll management is so important in poker. When you only play at the stakes you can afford it's no more a gambling issue. Yes you have to constantly resist to the tempation to go one or two levels up, but that what's a disciplined poker player does: say no to your internal gambler demon.
For sure! I think before this tournament the biggest buyin I usually played in was $215. That's like a x50 jump Lol
@@DerekBearzi it was not a jump, it was like a flight hahah
Good video anyways. I enjoyed the narration 👍
@@francescoiadicicco1266 Yeah hahahah, thanks for the comment my brotha. I appreciate it.
It's resist the temptation, not resist to the temptation.
Thank you from Malaysia.a real good video,so frank and brutal.
Thank you Hari!
never heard of someone who makes 40k a year buying into a 10k tournament....i mean that's a serious gambling problem id imagine.
Yeah it was pretty bad bro
RUclips actually attached an ad to an online sports book to this video…
Wow foreal? Smh
Thanks for sharing Derek! 3x WSOP bracelet winner Dutch Boyd stated 99% of all the poker players he knows are broke and keep borrowing more and more. The 1%'s Hellmuth, Negreanu, etc, have great sponsorships deals. Bottom line, keep your day jobs!
Its tough this one - poker can obviously be beaten and it sounds like you were good enough that you could have made a living / side hustle at lower stakes and with better bankroll management, so it it the same addiction as other forms of gambling?
And as a poker fan is a once in a lifetime punt at the main event really that bad? Is it any different to someone who may accept 10k depreciation to own a dream car, 10k on a dream holiday, 10k to climb one of the big mountains etc - you get the experience and the tales of playing the very best (plus a solid bad beat tale of woe 😅)... And of course you have the chance of running like god and binking a genuinely lifechanging sum that isnt the case with many other once in a lifetime experiences. Been plenty of tales of amateur players getting all their one times at the WSOP and living that dream from their buy in.
why didn't you play a $500 satellite or some of the 1k tournaments? busting out of the Main Event is the worst feeling but putting up 10k entry without a roll is pretty sick.
Some real assholes in this comment section... gambling addiction is the worst of any addiction. I don't have the ability to stop! I'm a blackjack player and can only stay away when I'm flat out broke. It's terrible to live this way. 😕 people just don't understand. If you would look at me you would have no idea that I have this problem and that is what's tough. Hiding it from everyone with no idea how to get help. I enjoy watching your videos and hope someday to have the willpower to stop.
Hey Dale, thank you for the comment and honesty my brotha. Negative comments are pretty brutal, but I don't let them effect me. Trying to help out anyone I can who is struggling with gambling. I still have a problem with sports betting + poker, but I've figure out a way to live with it. Wishing you all the best and that you can find help bro! I do a live stream on the weekends for anyone that wants to chat. Stop by
I have bet thousands on a horse that wasn’t even favourite just to break even gambling is dangerous you end up borrowing money and many times you don’t pay back on time and end up with more stress my advice is only bet what you can afford to lose and set yourself a limit that is comfortable.
I hear you bro, borrowing money to gamble is always the worst 😓
Increases your stress level as well and creates depression.
What’d you do for work? Like how’d you get the money in the first place
Thanks for the story...If you lost 10k on main even and 2 k in cash games...how was it only 12k..Hotel..plane fare meals etc?Should be like 14 or 15 no?
Yea! I tried going back to find out how much I spent, but it was over 10 years ago. So I couldn't get the exact number. But it is probably in the 3k ish range. Also, this is USD and I had to convert from Canadian, which makes it even worse 😆
Lost 4k in 2 minutes doing degen coin flips. I hate myself it’s hard to live and pretend it never happened. I’m not broke but it hurts a lot still I’m not rich
poker really isnt skill its luck 🤞 🤞 even though i constantly made money playing cash games 3 to 6 hours 5 times a week you go on huge swings and it takes your life and mind not worth it
Prettt unlucky to come up against KK with QQ and then go all in with jacks vs tens and the fuy flops a set
Nice video. U lost the minimum with ur QQ. What did the 10k buy-in loss take ur bankroll down to? As u know, we can play well for a few days and still lose. DISCIPLINE is everything in poker. U only want to make that buy-in where if u lose it, u still have a bankroll to play 2/5 and can get it back in several months. So one shouldnt do it unless one has a minimum of 40k.
Yeah I'm not sure what else I was supposed to do with the QQ, especially with how small he bet haha. I think my bankroll at the time was somewhere in the 25k ish range. I mostly played 1/2 online and 2/5 live every once in awhile. Cashed out during black friday and haven't really much since.
@@DerekBearzi I thought u quit gambling lmao
I mean was it gambling the issue or was it the decision to play a 10k buy in tournament which was 25% of your annual earnings? Reason I say this is, I feel that poker is a game of certain skill sets and one of those skills that is required to keep it from entering a “just gambling” zone, is the ability to manage your bank roll and stop losses. neither here nor there, but Good Story I can def relate to the feelings.
Maybe a little of both? I'm not entirely sure. At the time I thought spending 1/4th of my online winnings was just me playing in my version of The Superbowl. I always considered myself a poker player and never a gambler. But over the years I developed a gambling addiction which bled into other games. I'm fortunate that my local casino is 2 hours away, so my access is very limited.
Thankyou🙏
Thanks Brian
I don't know if you are addicted to gambling. I think you made a wrong decision when you gambled with amounts you can't afford.
Yeah the gambling addiction sorta developed over the time. Buying in for an amount I couldn't afford was definitely a terrible decision!
That pk q hand I think you play ok just a cooler.
I'm not entirely sure what else I could have done. If he bet a lot bigger maybe I could have folded? This old guy literally sat there folding for hours and never raised once until this hand 😆
You allowed yourself to be wowed by someone's reputation, forgetting that, over time, everyone gets the same cards.
For sure, but being out of position made it that much worse lol
Over time everyone gets the same cards, but the pros play them better. Fyi, position is HUGE in poker.
I dont care who they are they get dealt 2 cards just like you
@@DerekBearzi over here giving playing advice to a guy that’s trying to recover lmao 🤣 the most poker shit ever
Gambling Is like collecting a loan that u will later pay off
🤔
Yes that was it
Always best to play satellites to win a seat in big buy in tourneys... gambling in general is terrible however poker is one of the few things that can be beaten because it's not a house game they take a small little percentage of the pot or the tourney Buy in and it's your skill against others if you study GTO and solvers and understand position well and starting hands I wouldn't consider it gambling it's more of a game of skill especially over time I'm done well in the 30 years I've played I played 10 years professionally and now I just play on the weekends live against other GAMBLERS😏
Dang bro so you've been playing well before the poker boom. Playing live on the weekend is the best when all the drunks come out LOL, and they start throwing their chips in the pot haha
@@DerekBearzi I played in La when I was 20 years old when Daniel negreanu was playing in one hundred dollar tournaments over there at Crystal Park holdem had just come out basically it certainly wasn't solved like it is today then during the poker boom I played 10 years online 8 hours a day and crushed at bodog but when they went Anonymous I noticed I wasn't winning as much so I just quit online and now I play at one of the easiest casinos in all of California to play at Morongo they allow 18 year olds so I go and give them some lessons on the weekend 🤣
@@Edward-xd1td damnnn thats so crazy bro. Imagine seeing a young Daniel Negreanu grinding away at $100 buyins lol. I've always wanted to goto a casino in LA, but sadly never had the chance.
In a big tournament you're going to need to survive multiple all-ins. Even if you're 80% favorite is these situations (top pair over lower pair), the probability of surviving just 3 of these is just over 50%. You can play perfect in big tournaments, however, there is way too much variance in these big games to expect to win without a lot of luck.
@@jeffreysmith8977 you got to run extremely extremely well that's why I just play live
Lost 600 USD 😢
I’ve lost all my money on online pokies😢
Oh no sorry to hear that. I have a few gambling addiction stories about the pokies. Hopefully they can help
I'm a player poker, I lose all money! The software it's made for us to lose all the money in time! Watch yourself, watch how much you have win? How much you lose? We all lose, just 1% fromm all players have win! But if they will keep play higher, they will lose too! Its true! We all wish to win one big tournament and stop!
I hear you my dude. It's really tough to win and were always chasing that big score.
You played in the WSOP, ran into a bad hand, and then had a bad beat, normal in poker. Also playing against Benyamine should have been a learning experience, you sound like you are playing the victim, to be honest. Good story though 😉
Definitely learned a lot from David. Just what are the odds of sitting beside a top tier professional in a field of like 8,000? Haha. The most upsetting part for me was not knowing when to quit. Chasing loses is a common trait many gambling addicts struggle with. Hopefully those in need can learn from my stupid decisions.
So…the next logical step is 12k on red
Haha 😄 thats next level degenerate Lol
So what if that fails go 24k red on the next spin. Thanks for your advice would’ve never thought of such an easy way out of a gambling loss without you.
@@leydo8 ofc, Martingale strat will NEVER fail you…
great a 16 minute bad beat story....
Yikes. Just trying to help those like myself who struggle with addictions.
@@DerekBearzi I breakin chops buddy - nice video. Threw you a sub
