This was the only mmo I used to play religiously, the concept of using character ability (Flight, running superspeed, acrobats) to roam around the openworld was so much fun. It was such a unique experience, I always wonder why not more mmo adopt this. Some mmo have mounts and stuff but was limited in what you could do. I will always remember possibly the most awe something to ever happen to me while playing an MMO. My main character had telekinetic powers and one of the abilities would deal direct damage to the target, but also lift and throw objects nearby at them for a little extra damage (bins, chairs etc.). What I did not know, was that the more points you put into that ability, the bigger things could be lifted (cars for example).
Imagine my surprise during a fight with some random mobs, after using this ability, that fucking BUS comes flying over my shoulder from off screen and wipes out the group of enemies in front of me.

    Fun fact regarding DCUO.
For much of the game whenever playing as a villain you can make believe that you're only brutalizing people, with the occasional setting police on fire. Any illusion people have of this ends whenever they assist the sinestro corps in the later segments of the levelling experience because every npc you beat is a green lantern and the defeat animation for the green lanterns is their rings announcing that they are deceased.
DCUO doesn't tend to pull punches on stuff like that with multiple missions where you outright kill people or at the very least introduce them to war crimes such as:
    Mustard Gas
    Forcibly overdosing people on drugs
    Acid
    Setting people on fire
Tying people up and then setting them on fire (The setting people on fire are joker missions)
    Torturing students
Draining the life force of people
    Overloading life support systems
    and much, much more.
If you at any point feel like these aren't adequately evil enough for your character DCUO has you covered because in their chaos ridden lore they saw fit to include people contemplating suicide at the top of some buildings. this is one of a few random world events such as discovering wandering hero npcs/villains, people at atms and people trying to break into buildings or hack atms.
For the villain's interaction with these people you can literally kick them off of the building.
DC Universe's main goals in their world at first were allowing players to feel like heroes and villains, and they achieved this through an absolutely massive number of customisation options for players of all levels, and also in-world interactions.
For example of the customisation options here are a few of my characters in the game:
    imgur.com/a/IuZIYGU
Whilst in many other mmos you start off with basically nothing and have to get an interesting looking character through gear as you level due to DCUO having the core rule that you're supposed to look like a hero or villain from the start that means you can get really cool, and fun designs from the tutorial or just early levelling. For example of that I have a screenshot of a character who is designed exclusively from the tutorial, and basic powers, weapons and abilities that 100% of players have access to at the bottom of the list in the link above.
And the best part of this, which not a lot of mmos can actually say is that my main is a free to play character, I got to CR 366 without paying for anything, and everything she's wearing both in that outfit and her more commonly worn outfit is free to play, and fairly easily acquireable by anyone. in fact the only pieces of armour she's wearing which are difficult to get are the talon lord boots, and the chest piece. the Chest piece is a possible drop from a raid, and the boots are possible drops from a multitude of bosses in the game, everything else she's wearing is easy to get though.

The only MMO I ever really played is SWTOR, I started DCUO twice, but, for a lack of time, only got barely past the tutorial.
Would you recommend it today, as is?

    • @DarraghMontgomery
      @DarraghMontgomery 9 месяцев назад +3

@@finnb2318 It really depends on what you're looking for. DC Universe is on the easier side of MMOs for sure, which means a lot of its content including late game content is more open to lower skilled players, with me only having issues with 1 alert (4 person lategame content) and 1 raid which both required a large degree of teamwork and communications, and I was playing randoms at the time.
In Swtor content is not the hardest that MMOs can offer but it is more difficult than DCUO (I'm thinking about Eternity Vault for instance)
That's not saying DCUO can't be difficult but rather that it doesn't feel like it's difficult whenever the difficulty ramps, so it has a different play atmosphere.
Additionally Swtor has one of the best stories in MMOs released at the time, especially on the dark side so the DCUO story naturally doesn't compare since it's more comparable to Runescape or WoW which didn't have a consistent, over arching story outside of regional stories, and advanced stories for a long time.
However one thing t hat DCUO allows you to do much better than Swtor is it allows you to create a character, and make it feel truly unique. They basically put more effort into their customisation options than anything else in the game, and now you can effectively make a character for any theme, for instance I have a friend who made an ankylosaurus themed character and I genuinely cannot think of another mmo where you'd be able to do that since Ankylosaurs have never been the focus of DCUO, nor can I think of them ever appearing in any other MMO in a major way other than possibly Ungoro but I mainly remember Krush and Moshi from there.
You can make characters who are thematically egyptian gods, complete with the animal heads thanks to a recent expansion, you can have characters themed after atlantis, including having eels swimming around them, you can have green, yellow and red lanterns with thematic powers, you can be a thrall Starro if you want, since there is a multitude of Starro themed cosmetics and he basically never shows up in the games.
So in response to the question, is DCUO worth revisiting? Yeah I'd say so, whenever push comes to shove it can be really fun, and allows you to express what you want to be, and how you want to present your character to a degree of freedom that I've only really seen one other MMO match.
Additionally if you want to retry it, and you're worried about not having the time then you can add me on steam and we can go through it together which should speed things up.

I played this game religiously from the time it dropped on ps3 in 2011, even suffering the 24 hour download it took , until 2017. The game was a great time, loved how deep into the lore it got and exploring the various cities and the combat was wonderful. If I had to say ,what ended up killing it for me was the ever increasing microtransactions. Replay badges were the biggest scourge to the game in the long run.
I understand wanting to slow progression since every other mmo has daily and weekly bonuses, but what broke it for me was that they essentially charged you for rerunning old content. If I want to farm a t2 duo for a cosmetic style to drop, and we’re in t7, why am I still required to pay to do things that are technically outdated? No other mmo i can think of requires you to pay to farm things that are no longer required for progression. That combined with the drop rate left a very poor taste in my mouth, and it had been brought up numerous times to the development team about how little sense it made, and as per usual, they would dance around the topic. Overall it was a great game and i still think about it from time to time, but i havent really returned since.

I eventually switched to an Ice Tank and we did tons of raids and such with our League. The PVP was also extremely fun! But unfortunately we did quit eventually. Too much time was being spent on the game and we found it annoying to try and lead a group of people through Raids (who weren’t in our League) when we were constantly the last two alive during a difficult boss fight. Most players are really chill in every run unless things go really bad. "drunk neighbor" is a perfect descriptor for the tone of the game, I absolutely adore that descriptor haha. I loved running around with my nature powers, grappling from building to building and blowing up cars. Slinging around in some half mocking costume spamming the same few buttons to murder everything in my way will always be great, and the main story is just so campy, convoluted and absolutely iconic. I have fond memories of this mmo. I started playing about around 2014-2015 (Amazon Fury 1or2) and loved every second of it. I enjoyed making a character and feeling like I was part of the DC Universe. I made a bunch of characters, tried every combination that I thought would be fun, and got several to the level cap. It was an enjoyable experience all the way.
Now the one glaring issue that might sound small but was what pushed me away from the game was the, at the time, lack of account skins. If I wanted to make a certain character with a certain theme I couldn't do that till hours/days/week/months later because several costume pieces were locked behind late game content like raids or pvp rewards. Even if I had gotten that style on a different character I wasn't able to use it on any new character. This made creating new heroes/villains a real bummer.
Now flash forward several years and they finally announce that, coming "soon", they will adding in an account-wide costume unlock system. This meaning if I get a costume piece of character A, characters B-Z will all be able to use it from the get go. This was exactly what I wanted in the game. And then a few more years pass before it finally got added, but better late than never.
Now imagine my disgust when I read the article announcing this new feature only to learn that...
It was a paid system. Each individual piece of gear cost special badges to unlock. Those badges being farmable or purchasable. Some items cost $7+ each of premium currency. Now not only did I need to spend insane hours unlocking each cosmetic on one character I also had to either spend insane hours farming the special badges or shell out loads of cash. And while the unlocks were account-wide, unless I was making multiple characters with a similar theme I'd be unlocking different styles for each character.

I've played this game for the better part of 8 years. 27 now. Haven't played it in a few. Long nostalgia post incoming!
It's an amazing but rough around the edges superpower fantasy. My 1st character ever, I mained Green Lantern(Restores people's "mana" essentially. The blue bar.. Allowing people to continue chaining/spamming their attacks. Which use that bar.) Starting off as ANY support role is never easy, amd it's mildly stressful in high level endgame raids. 1 mess up, and we could all wipe. OR someone else messes up(usually tank) and I get blamed because I wasn't outputting enough power point restoration. When in reality they were chaining their powerset attacks incorrectly.. So they'd blow through their energy bar. .... She was a furry LOL. The cat "skin" caught my eye and I was like "why not?" My 1st ever character was literally a rainbow lesbian furry green lantern. 😂😂😂 Later, she became a "le super edgy black and red wearing bada$$" Eventually when they added Auras into the game, they added a rainbow one. Guess who saved and saved and saved to get it? This dummy right here lol.
DCUO and Runescape were my first dabbles in being a "market shark". It's what started my addiction to "playing" the market board game like many others do for money. When I was waiting for a raid or mission to fill up, I'd be researching what was high, what was low, and bought/held/sold accordingly. I made insane bank off that to feed my cosmetic item addiction. There's HUNDREDS of style pieces for you to collect. From EVERY DC hero and villain. Also Auras and TOYS. Yes literal toys. Balls you can summon and throw around like a beach ball(lots of fun in the hubs), things that transform you into into a snowman, roided out clown, Circe's animal army, and a few others. Seasonal things like throwable snowballs, throwable things that's transform whoever hit it, etc. I loved running around and turning unsuspecting players into things like a shiny green leprechaun, or a Lust/Envy/Pride demon, or even a cat! Like an actual real cat, not a furry lol.
I made 3 separate themed PVP characters. My 1st dive into PVP was "Slug Princess Tsunade" since I could find an entire Sannin(green flak vest under the grey war flak vests and all!) cosplay from different style pieces. She used glaives(I didn't put any glaive appearance, so she was bare handed fists) and used the Earth Power. Gave her the "flirty" stance because for women, they have one hand on their hip, and sway their other arm. It very much reminded me of how Tsunade stands. Decked her out in max level pvp gear, and had a totally different experience. It is SO FUN to do PVP in DCUO if you know what you're doing, and know the powers. All of them. To watch high level titans, literal endgame people. Level 200-400+(constant additions keep raising the gear level cap). Masters of their chosen powers. The ones that wait for the new gear/additions to drop and immediately start grinding to the new lvl cap. I was 100% one of those people.
Tsunade hit like an absolute TRUCK and a half, and the rock minion you can summon I always thought of as a "summoning jutsu". I statted her level points, abilities points, weapon points, and moveset points out to obviously be as close to Tsunade, and be as max-damage as possible. No bat-drone,batarang, or Superman laser eyes for her! Only things Tsunade might do/passive stat buffs.
I want to go back and see what's being on, after watching this. I can feel my aura/cosmetic addiction kicking in. I wonder how much has been added? I need to see. (:

I LOVE me some quality game jankiness that's not gamebreaking in any way. Just things like picking up people in giant balls, but the animation for picking items up is just really ... Not good looking lol. Small things like that.
PVP can be EXTREMELY fun! If you go in with PvE gear, you're gonna die. I did that a few times on my 1st character as I was learning the game, before I realized I needed to buy PvP gear.

It was amazing until it became a cash grab.

    • @EmilyK.91
      @EmilyK.91 Год назад

@@justsomeguyinthecomments3895 Yikes, I didn't even know about the rank limit that would piss me off royally. I've never understood why so much of the game is behind a paywall, not everyone can afford to sub monthly let alone pay for anything on the marketplace and that adds up fast! $5-$10 just for an expansion is expensive epecially with 43 episodes out. So you're either picking and choosing which one is worth your cash or pay the monthly fee :\
It's really sad to take a step back and see how much costs actual money, especially when (in my opinion) it's such a fun game even with all the in-game currency grinds and wonkiness.
It seems the most annoying thing with MMORPG's in general is that if you want the full experience you gotta pay up. I understand these companies need to make money, but putting so much behind a paywall doesn't automatically mean players playing for free want to pay montly or CAN pay montly.

If dcuo was still one of the top games even up to today, I'd most likely be playing this still. Cuz i could play this game literally all day and night xD I even played this late at night when school was the next day cuz my parents didn't want me up past like 10 playing games hahahahaha
Oddly enough, I'd rather play WoW than FF just cuz the pace is a lot faster than FF. And there's less button bloating in WoW right? Although i couldn't find anything to do in the game and found myself bored after 4 months, and my main game is FF. As much as i like it, the pace because of the GCDs is too slow for me, even hitting oGCDs isn't even instant like it should be, it's quite annoying. And there's some more things i won't list cuz it won't solve anything, but i definitely miss playing dcuo

Honestly, the game has a wide range of customization options when you play, but just like in most game, options for black/ curly haired people are very limited. The dread look like feces logs, the Afros are not even, and the short buzz cut leaves a lot to be desired. As a black gamer playing this game I mostly wore hoods until I found a hairstyle that looked like mine (which was after level 30)

This game added the controller class and broke up the holy trinity; Solo controlling a raid was the highlight of my time playing.

Played DCUO a long time ago. Enjoyed it for the most part. Awfully easy to stray into a zone that kills you out of hand. Love the super power customization. I was literally able to craft my ideal hero in the system. My buddies moved on to SWTOR and I followed them. But DCUO stayed in my mind. In fact, I was googling DCUO to see if the servers were still up and found this video.

This game and gotham imposters took up my time a lot when I was a kid, back in 2k11 I used to play it extensively, to the point where I'd be super sleepy in school the next day sometimes. Though, I controlled myself and only played after school and stopped 2 hours before I would need to go to bed.
I was always jealous of the people with cool costumes and pets, being I was just a kid in middle school. great vid, brought back some memories. Gonna send this to my friends.

I played DCUO a ton when i was younger. There's a ton of charm to it, and I genuinely think its one of the most minute to minute fun MMOs on the market. But it does sacrifice a lot of the role play elements people love from MMOs. You cant really get lost in the world due to just how unbelievable and arcade-y it is. If you're looking for an MMO that you don't have to spend your life, or all day playing to have fun, I'd give it a go.

I’ve played this game on and off since the beta version. I absolutely LOVE this game but there are so many things they could improve on. Basically like he said, the quests are defeating enemies and picking up things. I would like to see more crafting in this game. It is very limited. The devs should come up with certain consumables that require items that drop from the world anywhere or have them located in the world to farm and then craft them.

NGL I think is what made DCUO so good bc I hated playing MMO games that required doing that than rather actually enjoying the game my opinion I hope they don't add this.

Please no, I hate crafting in games. It takes the enjoyment of just playing the game out of it. That's one of the main mechanic that always pushes me away from a game. I hope they never add something like that.

I really like the beginning of DCUO. hero or villain the grind to 30 is fun. after that it feels like banging your head on a wall for power. a F2P player could spend months just trying to go up a couple points since it locks you out of gear for a week if your not a subscriber.
not to mention the TOXIC AF community.
I prefer heros, just the guy I am. but when the hero players are toxic you know something is wrong.
I asked once, "are the villains this toxic?" and someone replied with, "LMAO NAH THEY'RE WORST"

Loved this game and played for years. I ended up stopping when they decided to do new content every month instead of every 3 months. Everything was just reused content and nothing new was getting made. The community was extremely toxic and scammers were everywhere. Finally replay buttons ruined the in game economy so it just felt like it wasn't worth playing.

Used to love this game, I was there on the first day it released. Sadly overtime the micro transactions became the heavy push and the players that put the most hours grinding to get the top stats then could have easily been matched in stats with someone who causally plays in the space of a month. GRaviTY will always be the best league.

Sadly the game has become a giant cash grab. There is so much p2w and a few different loot boxes that are linked to progression. And at end game artifacts are 1000% p2w. Pvp is completely broken and the developers stopped developing pvp years ago. They have openly said pvp is not a priority and will not be developed in the future.

Launch week on a PVP server with the open world PVP events in this game was amazing. No one was really leveled up yet because there was just a constant stream of "villains are robbing a bank!" or "heroes are doing x or y!" and then each event (all with minimal rewards, iirc) would just result in like a 3-5 city block wide brawl with cars flying through the air and people getting piledriven into the asphalt. Basically the Superhero game I've always wanted but never was able to get. Once people figured out those events weren't actually worth much they moved on pretty quick but goddamn was it glorious being involved in a 40+v40+ hero vs supervillain battle on either side.
