😲MG!!!! THANKS brother 🙏🏾! Last session I wanted to apply Autotune live as the singer was singing and this explains why!!! U are always dropping Golden Nuggets with more details that I ever expect. Thank you again
Great stuff Chris! Coincidentally I just worked this stuff out last week for my Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 using their Focusrite Control software to add Direct Monitoring on to any input and I used Cue2 to give some reverb to the performers headphones. This works great, the only compromise being using punch-in (in tape machine recording mode) when the singer is singing along to the part already recorded before the punchin point, they will hear the latency doubling effect until punch-in when they only hear their direct signal and the reverb. I suppose there’s no way around this other than your first option of low sample rate.
I never use Tape Machine Style Monitoring when working with an interface that has no Cubase DM support. Keep the recording mode to Manual. Doesn't matter much, the signer will just hear himself during Playback, no big deal :) And by keeping the recording mode to Manual, activate your Reverb channel's Monitor so it always stays active.
Hi Chris, my reverb is on an FX channel and FX channels have no monitor button so I couldn't do your suggestion (unless I misundertood you), however I noticed the main shortcoming of my setup is on playback before punch-in, the singer in Cue2 headphones only hears the wet reverb signal and not the dry signal but I found a workaround from parts of suggestions from the Steinberg Cubase forum by activating/recording simultaneously on 2 audio channels as follows in manual record mode as follows: 1st audio channel : input 1 (mic), monitor OFF (only plays back recorded signal), Cue 2 (headphones) ON, Send to FX ON. 2nd audio channel :input 1 (mic), monitor ON (only monitors signal being recorded), Cue 2 (headphones) OFF, Send to FX ON. FX reverb channel has Cue2 (headphones) ON of course to hear the wet reverb signal.. Now the singer hears the playback audio dry & wet signal via 1st audio channel and their singing direct from Focusrite Scarlett direct monitorin outside of Cubase, but also wet signal via Cubase from 2nd audio channel. It's a bit of extra hassle but not much for a perfect session. Just have to delete the 2nd audio track (or just events/parts) after finished recording. Hope that helps others with only outboard direct monitoring!
Thank you! I'm a drummer who just got back into recording and built a rig with the tascam 16x8 and cubase 11 artist and the latency is real. You just saved me from myself!

This is really helpful. Direct Monitor and Use the DSP reverb in the audio interface (Antelope Orion). Light bulb switches on in my brain. I thank you kindly, Sir. 😎♥️
I'm using a UR28M in my project studio and a UR44 for portable recordings. These actually allow the DSP EQ and Compressor functions to be part of the recorded signal. The Rev-X reverb is only available for monitoring and that's OK because I wouldn't normally want to record reverb but rather add it later. It is great however for the vocalist because they can tweak it as they like and it wont become part of the recorded take. Take care.

Thanks for this video. I am wondering about another potential issue. Is it possible that direct monitoring gives a false idea of the synchronization between recorded instrument and the playback ?
This is very helpful. I was pretty overwhelmed when I first got my Steinberg UR44 C and Cubase 10.5. Thank you. I wonder if you could do a sort of relatively quick setup and monitoring choices- say with a guitar or a quick vocal. Record that and let us hear it working as you monitor. Oh and thank you for including some magnification of the screens where you are accessing certain drop downs. Very helpful. Halfway through my mix down Academy for Cubase now. This is going to help me a lot!
With the Steinberg UR interface you will get an additional panel on top in mixer called "hardware". On the right, it has a tiny 3way routing switch for inserting a real time compressor / EQ and a send for an internal reverb, which is a shared send for all directly monitered tracks. You get to choose whether you record the compressor / eq on the track or just use it during monitoring.
For older UR interfaces, you're correct @Realeaven2000 but not for the UR C Series, the Harware Mixer Tab was replaced by a full Section on the left Zone of the project window
Yes Chris, I also would like a direct monitoring video with a Steinberg interface. I have a UR 44 (the original, not the "C" series) and am a little confused on how to use the DSP that came with the interface. Thanks!
Really good video for me! I have a question. If I do monitoring with zero latency through my audio interface like this video ,does recording with large buffer size(like 1024, 2048) have any impact on recording quality or I can record with that large size?? Thank you for your great effort
Hello, thank you for your video. When recording a vocal i monitor the direct sound of the mic into the soundcard mixer (antelope) where i mix the mic direct sound and the cue mix coming from cubase. I would like to be able to send the previous vocal recording of the track until i am punching but not when i am in the punch section without having to turn it off in the cue section of the track. Otherwise the singer ears it twice and with a delay: from the direct sound of the soundcard mixer and thru the cue with latency. I also want to hear in my control room when punching. Is there a function in cubase where when in punch-in mode (or even record on existing track) the monitoring is automatically cut in the cue only and not in the control room. And of course i don’t want to use another track for the punch, i want to do the punch in the same track. Of course if you have ultra low latency you do every thing in cubase using tape style monitoring in preferences (but i have to much latency even at minimum buffer size). How do you manage this issue with your sound card (that doesn’t have direct monitoring option from cubase) ? If you have any explanation or video link, you are welcome.Thank you
@mixdownonline Hi Chris, thanks for the Video! I was wondering if I can realize the same method you mention at 8:55 when I want to monitor multiple tracks with the same FXs - In my case 16 Tracks of drums? I just got an RME UFX III Interface and the DSP FX are "OK" but not really the greatest sounding to my ears. So I want to use a quality VST reverb to add some room to my drums while tracking. Any tipps on how I can do this? Thanks so much! 🙏🏻
That was a good technical video with a lot of good information. I worked before with a Presonus interface and could do the trick about mix direct with processed signal, for example to add reverb to a voice at recording (you mentioned the old video where you show that). Since a couple of months I have a UR-RT4, that you mention at 13:12. I am glad you confirm here that, when working with direct monitoring, you can add effects from the DSP (that works very well) but NOT from the DAW. I had tried all kind of tricks, working with FX channels, sends, duplicated channels, hiring wizards, throwing spells, and so on, without success. I wanted, for example, add delay or similar, but to do that I need to disable the direct monitoring function. It is a very nice interface, though. What good is too, is that, if I send signal to a cue mix and this is routed to outputs 3 and 4 (Mix 2), the direct monitoring works too.
Have you ever tried comparing monitoring from cubase vs through your audio interface. I noticed a diference in audio quality.. not Just latency. I can Hear a better and full audio signal, especially with low frecuencies when usiing direct monitor through my audient id14
Thank you so much for the video. I am planning to use Cubase for our band's live shows and I am going to turn on direct monitor on cubase for my pluggins to work. My signal chain is Instruments -> Presonus board -> Cubase (Laptop) -> presonus board -> Left Right Output. For our band practice it sounds good enough but I am concerned about outdoor gig. Is that a normal practice?
@@mixdownonline So that I could use nice pluggins on Cubase which Presonus Mixer board don't have it and I do multi tracking for bass and vocals for some extra punch. Am I doing too much?
Chris How do I turn off the yellow monitor when I am recording I can not hear the monitor yellow because of delay and does not let me hear what I recorded to punch in
I can't find a way to use interface direct monitoring while tracking and using pre-roll. I can hear the sound of what was recorded trough my DAW but when the armed track start to record I hear the channel doubled. From DAW and interface direct monitoring... I can't think in a workaround.. usually I monitor directly by DAW but my new interface have a mixer that can be controlled by iPad and that's very useful..
Great Chris, now what about Direct Monitoring vs Control Room, I would to hear about these and what each can do for you and what limitations as far as how many tracks/instruments? I believe only 4 tracks can be controlled with Control Panel, gee I hope I have this right.....Cheers Bruce
You mean working with the CUE Mix feature? Same thing applies. The signal goes in Cubase to get to the Control Room and Cue Mixes so you need to record at a low buffer size
Yes correct “cue mix” I will rematch the video again Chris! What I want to understand is, Cubase vs interface vs cue mix, which would be the better path to use for recording and to send a monitor mix to the players/musicians? Thanks for your education. Keep up the great work👍
1 question please i can use my phone in thr10x cubase ai i can add effects cubase in thr10x problem maybe latency..or strange sound in double chanel low sound ...
Hello Chris, I've been having a serious challenge. I'm trying to vst plugins on my Behringer wing mixer for my church. It's there a way I can use plugins without monitoring? I've observed that sound doesn't come out if I don't enable monitoring.
@@mixdownonline Yeah, I was beginning to think it was abandonware as there haven't been any updates since last August (and I think they were very minor). Is there anything exciting being added? I'm slightly jealous of the cheaper series having the iPad app! Is there any chance we might see an app for the AXR4?
@@mixdownonline Oh, and it would be great if they could fix the bug where the AXR4 side panel doesn't show when you're using control room (unless you assign another pair of outs as a non-control room outs). I'm not using the digital in/outs so i assign these, but it's a bit annoying!
What is point of direct monitoring on audio interface when daw has low latency mode? Like some audio interfaces Motu and ssl Scarlett have ability for monitoring and adjusting volume on interface but no fx right? So why use it
It is worth noting that if you monitor through Cubase, plugins in the signal path (from the channel to master and control room) can add additional latency on top of the interface buffer. Especially things like limiters on the master channel or e.g. Sonarworks in linear phase mode in control room. The solution is to either disable (not only bypass) those manually or hit the “constrain delay compensation “ button in the toolbar which will disable all plugins with a latency higher than n milliseconds, where n is a value you can set in Preferences->VST->delay compensation threshold.
I can’t turn off the reverb on the Steinberg and I don’t know how to access the DSP mix effects to turn it down So much reverb even before I turn on cubase
sir, i am facing a major problem... please trying to solve my problem.. my first instrumental or audio track recording red icon i can not disable. another track is ok but first track can not disable recording icon.. please help...
Bro, thank you very much for that video, but I have a question, it would be highly appreciated if you have the time to answer. I'm on Cubase. RME HDSP9632 + RME QuadMic II Preamp. I want to record through a Neve 1073 Plugin + LA-2A Plugin. I insert those two FX on my Audiochannel I want to record on and turn the monitor button on. Do I now hear only the processed signal (the effects of the 2 plugins) or do I hear the dry and the wet signal at the same time on my headphones?
Hello! If you monitor through Cubase without Direct Monitoring but with the Monitor button ON, you will hear the processed sound with the plugins inserted on your channel. Just make sure you don't also monitor a dry signal from your RME Interface at the same time as your Cubase signal. Hope that helps!
I Hi! After installing the latest update 11.0.10 my low latency 4 millisek M-Audio Fireire 410 disappeared! Now it’s only the the “generic low latency ASIO-driver” with 40 msek latency that is selectable inside Cubase 11 Artist. I run Win 10 64-bit. Any advice?
Hi Chris, I am thinking of upgrading my audio interface, and I am in between of Focusrite scarlett 2i2 3rd gen, PreSonus studio 24c, and audient iD4 mk2. What do you suggest and what is your opinion on the latency of each of them?
I have a focusrite ISA one going into my Scarlett 18i8 and I adjust the size and it still has the same amount of latency no matter what size I select. Anyone have any idea why this is ???
Do you know how can I fix this problem? When I want to export a mixdown in cubase the screen for exporting pops up but its too big and I cant click on the export audio botton. Thanks!
That's probably a Display Settings issue on your computer, maybe your resolution id too small or something, try changing your display resolution on Windows or Mac to give you the change to resize the export window and then change it back to your preferred resolution. Hope that makes sense!
That can be useful if you already have a bunch of plugins in your session. Cubase compensates by delaying all the other channels so all channels stay in sync. Constrain Delay Compensation will turn off all the plugins that generate delay, so you can record with a minimal delay Compensation effect. I will make a video next week on this with a good example to show up :-)
Very important subject. You're missing one vital point, though! How do you use your "non-direct monitor compliant interface" method with Tape Machine Style Monitoring. The problem is that this mode automatically turn on the "Monitor" button on the channel when you punch in recording or stop playback! So, the method you describe won't work with the Tape Machine Style Monitoring mode. I've been wrestling with this for quite a while. I'm using a MOTU 828es interface. It's an excellent interface, but i doesn't support DM. As far as I know, only Steinberg interfaces do. Although, according to Greg Ondo, there's no thechnical reason why other manufactures can't support DM too. Only the N.I.H. syndrome.
I never use Tape Machine Style Monitoring when working with an interface like the EVO8 which has no Cubase DM support. Keep the recording mode to Manual. Doesn't matter much, the signer will just hear himself during Playback, no big deal :)
@@mixdownonline I (and many others) ALWAYS use Tapemachine Style moitoring, as it's the only workable way. Perhaps you never need to do punch ins. Then I'm envious of the quality of musicians you have the privilidge of working with.
@@svenisaksson3970 Don't get me wrong, I love Tape Machine style when monitoring through Cubase or with Cubase's Direct monitoring active, but if I'm recording from an interface that doesn't support Cubase's Direct Monitoring, Manual mode is the way to go and will do the job even for punch ins etc, did this in several recording situations with clients in the past 18 years. With that said, if this is not workable for you, I would suggest you sell your Focurite and get a Steinberg UR-C24 Interface, it's support Direct monitoring and has DSP Fx for monitoring, it's seriously a good option.
@@mixdownonline Well, I beg to differ. 1. I don't use a Focusrite interface. I use a MOTU 828es. 2. The reason I use an 828es is that Steinberg ruined my MSR-816 by sending out malware that was masqurading as a driver update. 3. I wouldn't touch any Steinberg hardware, with a ten foot pole! As far as I'm concerned the Steinberg UR-C24, or any Steinberg interface i a piece of junk! You never know when Steinberg will brick it in a feeble attempt to force you to buy a new one!
@@svenisaksson3970 I understand your frustration. Just so you know, I've been working with Steinberg Hardware for years and never had a problem. Sorry you had problems with them :(
@@kdcyp No, I don't believe they do. Note that the term Direct Monitoring can be a bit tricky. It's a generic term for a specific kind of monitoring. But it's also a feature in Cubase. Just because a manufacturer says that their interface has direct monitoring doesn't mean that it compatible with Steinbergs implementation. For example, MOTU says that my 828es is capable of Direct Monitoring (and it is, with MOTU software), but it's not compatible with Steinbergs implementation (the Direct Monitoring checkbox is greyed out). This is important to keep in mind when choosing an audio interface, if DM is important to you. Perhaps someone whith access to a Focusrite interface can check if their implementation is compatible with Cubase (the Direct Monitoring checkbox is NOT greyed out).
@@svenisaksson3970 if your interface have direct monitoring, you don't have to use Cubase Direct monitoring because it is implemented in hardware. You didn't listen carefully what Chris was saying
Yo, can somebody help me? So, I'm on day 2 of trying to set up a personal headphone mix with a direct monitored vocal with dspfxmix added in for recording vocals. I am using Cubase 8 Artist (so no control room), and a Steinberg Ur 824. I officially have it set up to work without direct monitoring. But with direct monitoring, I can not get the vocal track to sound right on Mix 2 L/R which is where I'm sending the headphone mix too, while my assistant on the PC can still hear the original track in his headphones in Mix 1 L/R. I have tried swapping Mix 2 L/R to main output, everything. The direct monitor vocals that sound right always comes out of the stereo output. How do i get this signal into my headphones. I'm losing it at this point. lol.
Excellent info. I’ve been doing this for some time and always used a mixer for monitoring to overcome the latency issue, however routing the input signal to a stereo channel to monitor the reverb is brilliant. Any tipps on how I can do this? Thanks so much! 🙏🏻
Great info again! Thanks!
Any time!
That's Awesome...thnks
Love it Chris Thank you Again and Again
My pleasure!
You're welcome! Yes, that should work, but why using Cubase for live gigs if you already go through a Presonus Board?
@@mixdownonline So that I could use nice pluggins on Cubase which Presonus Mixer board don't have it and I do multi tracking for bass and vocals for some extra punch. Am I doing too much?
Thank you? it was really a great help for me!
Chris How do I turn off the yellow monitor when I am recording I can not hear the monitor yellow because of delay and does not let me hear what I recorded to punch in
Can you use Cue sends as direct monitoring on the cubase channel with axr4?
Yes correct “cue mix”
I will rematch the video again Chris! What I want to understand is, Cubase vs interface vs cue mix, which would be the better path to use for recording and to send a monitor mix to the players/musicians? Thanks for your education. Keep up the great work👍
Thank you selim good video !! ! Cubase Chord track with ara2 melodyne pleaaaase !!
It's The new revolution for music production.
1 question please i can use my phone in thr10x cubase ai i can add effects cubase in thr10x problem maybe latency..or strange sound in double chanel low sound ...
Hi Chris , Thank you for everything I have UR-RT4 But I can't use Headphone 1 & 2 In simultaneously !
Please Help me ! what can I do?
Amazing!
Hello Chris, I've been having a serious challenge. I'm trying to vst plugins on my Behringer wing mixer for my church. It's there a way I can use plugins without monitoring? I've observed that sound doesn't come out if I don't enable monitoring.
Tell us more about this AXR4 update :)
It's a firmware update that should be released in the near future. You have a AXR4?
@@mixdownonline Yeah, I was beginning to think it was abandonware as there haven't been any updates since last August (and I think they were very minor). Is there anything exciting being added? I'm slightly jealous of the cheaper series having the iPad app! Is there any chance we might see an app for the AXR4?
@@mixdownonline Oh, and it would be great if they could fix the bug where the AXR4 side panel doesn't show when you're using control room (unless you assign another pair of outs as a non-control room outs). I'm not using the digital in/outs so i assign these, but it's a bit annoying!
@@mixdownonline Hey Chris, Still no sign of this firmware upgrade. Have you heard anything you're able to share?
@@paultumelty I would also be interested 🙂
Great video. Thank you!
You're right...That is actually next week's topic...“constrain delay compensation “ Very confusing for a lot :-)
Thanks man, that was helpful!
Glad it helped!
Thanks 🙌
Thanks👍👍
Welcome 👍
I can’t turn off the reverb on the Steinberg and I don’t know how to access the DSP mix effects to turn it down
So much reverb even before I turn on cubase
Maybe a stupid question. Is there a standard Windows keyboard shortcut to toggle the monitoring if a channel on or off? I could not find it yet😂
Thank you for explaining this. :)
You're welcome!
sir, i am facing a major problem... please trying to solve my problem.. my first instrumental or audio track recording red icon i can not disable. another track is ok but first track can not disable recording icon.. please help...
If I on direct monitoring in cubase , there is any quality issue in recording vocal quality?
Thank you
Of course!
it seems that the monitoring sound is different with the sound exported in cubase .why?
Ou yeah!... Right on man
@@mixdownonline thak you! I'll try.
What about using compensation delay available in cubase?
It disables all the effects and insert/send plugins, not always handy.
That can be useful if you already have a bunch of plugins in your session. Cubase compensates by delaying all the other channels so all channels stay in sync. Constrain Delay Compensation will turn off all the plugins that generate delay, so you can record with a minimal delay Compensation effect. I will make a video next week on this with a good example to show up :-)
@@rolandgerard6064 no it doesn´t, you just have to modify delay compensation threshold in preferences to a value over 0 and voilá
thanks bro
Of course!
Sorry you had problems with them :(
Great video! How would you rate the EVO 8 against the Focusrite 18i8?
Never tried the Focusrite so hard to tell.
Great video. Thanks. At the end, would you say the best option is an Audio Interface with a DSP?
It's definitely a great option if you can afford it. They usually are a bit more expensive depending on the brand and how many channels you need.
If you want to be able to use Direct Monitoring, a Steinberg interface is the only option.
@@svenisaksson3970 Focusrite gear also have direct monitoring but I don’t think they have DSP effects 🤔 Must check this out 👍
@@kdcyp No, I don't believe they do.
🔥🔥🔥
Thanks!
I'm losing it at this point. lol.
How to use 2 audio interfaces same time in Cubase
Right way ❤🙏🙏🙏🙏
Excellent info. I’ve been doing this for some time and always used a mixer for monitoring to overcome the latency issue, however routing the input signal to a stereo channel to monitor the reverb is brilliant. Always learning something new.
Thanks for sharing - Cheers,
