Black sand is volcanic in nature. It's usually iron sand with a coating of titanium dioxide and that protects from rusting. Most of the west coast has black sand- well in the north island anyway.

      Not quite.
NZ Iron sand is titanomagnetite Fe2+(Fe3+,Ti)2O4 a molecular mineral. There is no "coating"
      Magnetite is iron(II,III) oxide, Fe2+Fe3+2O4
The iron and titanium are in the forms of oxides and can not oxidise further to form rust.
Free iron has not existed on the earth's surface since bacteria first started producing oxygen

@@PaulG.x Thank you. I am not as knowledgeable as you. That came from a tv report years ago when I was young. (I realise as well that reporting doesn't necessarily equate to exactness's. Especially commercial media.)
I realise about that of the free iron originally. Just like the free iron from current meteorites and that free oxygen that came available from those early life stromatolites out of a chokingly gassed molten volcanic planet. I'm not into the superstitious in any form.

@@Mcfreddo Exactly. When the cyanobacteria started to produce oxygen , all the dissolved iron in the oceans oxidised and precipitated out forming the ore deposits we use today.
The pre-oxygen environment was far from choking for the organisms that lived at that time.
For them , the poisonous oxygen the cyanobacteria produced caused the greatest extinction event in the life of the earth at that time,
