was that Ryobi reel engineers by chance? I just got a new old stock ryobi baitcaster. Very nice reel, especially for that time. It was just like a Lew's BB1, but much smaller and lighter. I love that reel.

I always told my dad if I screwed up. His face would get all red but he never did anything because I told him before he could find out himself.
The only time I couldn't fix it was when I dropped his chainsaw from the barn loft and broke it but he was there when it happened so I didn't get in trouble.
One time I bought him a whole paper grocery bag full of sockets and wrenches and said if I ever break one just grab another out of the sack and by the way I left your metal scrapping brush outside and the dog chewed on it for a while.
I made it up later by buying him a few tackle boxes full of stuff and a good dozen rods and reels

I had that happen to an old glass rod from the 1920s-1930s with a Swedish made lever drag Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 7000 that cost about $500 on its own. It was my favorite fishing rod and we were fishing a tournament on Wilson lake, tied off to a ledge in 100’ of water down towards the dam. Well I had just cast out a whole skipjack weightless about 15 feet out from the where the cliff came up out of the water at the bank and was just letting it slowly sink its way down as I let out line on a free spool. I had another rod that as cast straight out off the bank in the rod holder just to my left of where I was sitting and i saw it get a bite out of the corner of my eye. I just turned the lever drag up just enough to engage it on the spoon and sat my rod down on the deck instead of in the rod holder that was in front of me. Reached out to my left with one hand and grabbed the other rod and started reeling in about a 5lb little dink. About the time I started reeling that fish in, I heard my rod shoot out from underneath my seat, across the front deck, over the trolling motor that was still in the stowed position on the front deck, and then it flew at least 50 feet before it ever touched the water, and it left a trail of bubbles that we could see for over 100 feet going straight as an arrow away from the boat, and nothing that anyone could do about it. I reckon that fish didn’t even consider slowing down until it hit its head on the dam about a mile away by the way it was moving. 😂😂😂
