the MT-09’s inline tripple is the best in the business imo, absolutely loved the power delivery on mine. 0-60 in 2.9, almost impossible to keep the front wheel on the ground on launch. savage. fun machine and an amazing value
Incredible, informative video as usual. 1000% appreciate your effort, editing, comments ans experience. So much to comment on. I had a 14 Ape Dorsoduro that GP worked on and man oh man was it a great experience. Expensive? Sure but well well WORTH the $$$.

I've confirmed with multiple dealerships and through my own experience that the service light is really just a little orange wrench that doesn't do anything except occupy space on the screen. It literally does nothing else.
1) I just bought one of these, thanks for all the review videos on this bike that got me to look at it! Love it so far. 2) I used your link to buy the SW Motech Crash Bars. Thanks again!
Ian SW-Motech makes the best of everything. PERIOD! Their tank bags and top bags are the best in the business. Great video! Ride SAFE and BE safe! Cheers
Ian you’ll love the new engine map. It is so much smoother & to me it felt as if it had 10 more hp. I’m in Indiana at 800 ft amsl. I’m sure you’re at a higher elevation. Also, when you changed your oil, did you happen to retorque the left & right side engine case covers (and I believe some bolts on the bottom of the engine). At 600 miles in, all of my bolts were not tight to 12Nm. It’s worth checking as I believe some of the oil & water pump leaks on the left side are due to a loose cover.
Super info my amigo. Thanks to the WWW, we can manage to get anything from almost any part of the world and most of this parts and accessories are in mainland, so it's great 👍
I bought the OEM heated grips and quick shifter When I purchased the bike and the dealer included the installation labor. I'm glad they did because it took them several hours.
Hello. I am lucky to live near an Aprilia dealer ,and just got the quick shifter and first service done. My first service included the update, head bearing inspection wheel bering inspection, chain lube and adjust brake pad inspect and adjust, re torqued all safety fastners, coolant level check and fill battery test ,charging system check reset service light and more. I was going to do it myself until I heard all that needs to be done. It was almost $500. Love your channel. I am 707darren on youtube. My other bike is a R1250GS. Best wishes D
When installing the heated hand grips the computer recognizes it on the dash and you don't need the dealer for installing them, you just need to be careful with running the wires up in behind the display because things can get a little tedious and time consuming to keep from pinching wires and breaking some of the faring and the neck going under the display when the bolts don't come lose without breaking something. So Ian believe me from experience you did the right thing by letting the dealer install them.
The way the grips are integrated into the bikes system makes it worth the price. It is nice to not have a switch that you have to figure out where to place. I remember going to GP Cycles while I was in the area and they were nice guys to deal with.
I thought that on my 890. It soon became a pain having to go into the menu to turn the grips on after every stop. On a long ride that could easily 5-7 times with fuel stops and food or sightseeing. It really gets old fast. Something like the symtec heat demons you can just hook up to switched power and leave the switch turn on. That way they power up as soon as you turn the bike on. IMO it's a better system for long distance riding/touring.
I just purchased one. Also have a 1250GSA. The Aprilia is just a blast to ride. Agree the Cruise Control “Ready” light flashing is the only thing that’s irritating.
SW parts are pricey but are built like a tank.. AG battery?.. again top notch stuff.. AF1 has been building my RSV4 Superbikes for CCS/WERA for 10 years... again very pricey but my Aprilia race bikes have been flogged since day 1... zero issues or broken parts....stone cold reliable and FASSSSST...
Oxford heated grips every day. They automatically turn off if you leave them on plus they are the best. MT09, it’s Japanese. He bought that special MT09 for sure after seeing the glint in his eye at the end.
i think the kawasaki z900 RS SE is the better looking bike in the category. Also, its one of the rare 4 cylinder in the higher mid weight naked bike. It sounds absolutely amazing. And the SE version with Ohlins suspension is incredible. Test rided one and wanted to buy it right away.
Great stuff Ian! Thanks for your thorough review and additional details. Could you do the Tuareg 660 World a favour and test the fit of (different) soft bags with panniers and without? I have mine coming in April and I am a bit worried about how it will fit with the high and wide exhaust. Thanks
$400 is a lot of money for some people, enough so that a large portion of the US can’t come up with that kind of money. It is very nice to save a ton of money by buying used bikes and doing the service yourself!
Hi Ian well done as always. I have been following this series closely rode a Tuareg at GetOnADV last year. My Africa Twin has 20k plus miles (zero issues) and was really loving the Aprilia but this dealer only service reset takes this bike off my list. Is there anything in the works for that?
Clearing the service light is only the the start of your costs once 8:47 the bike is at the dealer. At a minimum they will have to “reset” this or “clear” something.
@@paulherron4289 no, I wouldn’t buy one for the reason you are tied to a dealer, even if it’s minimal servicing. I doubt you could leave just paying for a light reset. If you have faith / know your dealer, maybe then.
So why have you gone backwards with battery chemistry technology? The standard fit battery on the 660 Tuareg is a Lithium Iron Phosphate LiFePo4 battery which has a chemistry that is thermally and puncture impact very safe compared to a Lithium Phosphate which has been proven to be thermally unstable and will catch fire when the the cells are damaged by punture impact.
Honestly the heated grip install isn't that bad - it's straight forward and despite a number of fasteners, it doesn't take a tremendous amount of time. Took me about 45 minutes.
Monster sp all the way👌 Way better equipped than the mt09sp imo New to your channel but have really enjoyed your in depth reviews, opinions etc Seem very passionate and knowledgeable Look forward to seeing more 👍 Oh quick question about the aprilia 660 motor.have you heard any issues with oil leaks.seems common in the uk
All the wrong dealers! Triumph street triple 765. I have a 2015 675 R and love it. Looking at an addition of a Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer. Love the videos you do a great job!
Thanks for all the great videos. What bike do you feel is the better all around bike between the tuareg 660 and the norden 901 ? Thanks, I cannot decide between the 2.
I think you are really fast AND drank a lot of coffee! I’m stuck between the Guzzi 850 and the A660, if I had your off-road to ride I would go with the 660, but I’m 90% or better street, what to do? I’ve had 6 BMWs so fond of driveshaft, but I think the 660 is around 50 lbs lighter so better for my camping trips. I think I’d be happy with either but mostly cruising the beach so maybe Guzzi better plus I’m sure 2 up better on Guzzi
Hi Ian: Just watched your first service / Heated Grips RUclips. Very good. Thank you. I am a new Taureg owner. Sold my Tenere700 that had factory heated grips. Problem: the Grips did just not get hot enough for riding in Canada. Had Oxford after market grips before on another bike and they got nice and hot, much hotter than the Yammy OEM heated grips. How are the Apriia grips ? Hot enough on the highest setting?
Suggestion for sport bike. You will regret any choice I think if you do not at least try the Triumph Street triple RS. Check out the Visor down review. The howl of the Triumph triple on the pipe must be experienced. I had a Daytona 675 I tracked for years that was so fun.
Ian, order yourself a Harbor Freight lift, you’ll wonder why you’ve been doing motorcycle yoga for so many years..I also just leave a bike parked on mine so it doesn’t take up any extra room.
When you get into summer, will you do the exhaust wrap at the cat to stop hot foot? That is the one thing I have heard folks complain about. Wish I knew you were in town..
Not a huge fan of the bash plate mount on that 660, but I guess they saved some weight & got a little more ground clearance by skipping any frame rails under the engine. The MT09 sp is what your garage needs Ian, but it, ride it, review it!
I would prefer owning a Transalp, two Honda dealers within 30 minutes. My closest Aprilia dealer is also 3 hours away, driving that to have maitenance monitor reset is not for me. Will you do an XR650L build this year?
Hey Ian, not sure if you did a follow-up video on how you liked the SW Motech crash bars and shield. For sure they are second to none for engineering and precision fitment. Great powder coat and hardware also. Sweet shop and great techs.
The skid plate and crash bars look solid. The pannier rack just looks like stamped metal, curious how that would stand up to abuse vs more common tubular pannier rails.
Regarding sporty bikes I am enjoying my Triumph Street Triple 765 RS. Quality components and build, a great track day machine and comfortable enough for day long rides.
Hi Ian. Being watching your channel for the last 3 month. I’m getting back to riding after a long hiatus but I can’t find anything in the local Dealers here in Nevada. What do you use to pickup your used bikes. I actually waiting for the GS1300 but I want to ride something decent ASAP. Thanks.
Will be interesting - how the Aprilias' program update went ( for that it should be ridden ) Like I mentioned before - on my and many others' Guzzies 85TT ( 2021 ) - that program update fu...ed up the CC and the power was dumped to 35KW ( which they claim, was fixed ). The CC - STILL not fixed yet !!!!!.
Hey Ian, I'm thinking of getting a Tuareg, but I've heard it takes ages to get parts. If I'm riding to Alaska and something breaks, would I be SOL? Would I have to wait months for parts? What has been your experience? Have you had anything break on the bike? Thanks!
I just did the first service on my Tuareg. Love the bike. The the glossy black plastic dipstick is about the only issue I have with it. Someone needs to make an aftermarket replacement. I see you haul your bike in the bed of your truck. What's your preferred technique for securing the front end?
Ian dude, $50k worth of bikes, and you've sitting on your butt on the floor! You need a lift! Even the Harbor Freight one works fine. Get with it! PS: Love the utility of your videos. Advice, speak 10% slower. Comes across a touch 'frantic'. You've convinced me. I need to sell a bike or two and get a 660 for some BDRs. Greetings from Wisconsin.
Hey Ian, I finally got to swing a leg over a Tuareg down here in Australia and the first thing I noticed was the ungodly amount of heat the bike was spewing out on to my legs. I had to ride the entire time with my legs spread eagled out. I am guessing its not noticeable during winter up there in the northern hemisphere because it was basically a deal breaker for me on my test ride. Would love to hear your thoughts when the weather warms up for you.
"Honey, I totally meant to tell you this morning at 5 a.m. about a possible motorcycle purchase, while you were still in a half-remembered dream. Honest."
Nice video and fun to see all the eye candy bikes you were looking at. I had a Ducati Panigale V4s and it was fantastic but really just too fast. Traded it in on a Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP. Another incredible bike. Amazed I got through those two bikes with no tickets:) It I was looking for a sport bike now I would really be interested in a Ducati V2 bike, because back in the day I had a Honda RC51 and that was the most fun sport bike I ever had. The V2 engine configuration is great. The more I see you review the Tuareg 660 the happier I am that I got a KTM 890r Adventure, just because for off road the 890r just seems designed better and more durable. Not to trash the Tuareg though. It is a nice bike and if I had one I would still be pretty happy no doubt. Looking forward to your future reviews of the 660 just out of curiosity. Also noticed a Specialized Levo in your garage. I have a Gen3 and just love the bike. So much fun! You going to do a review on that?
Would love to hear how much they new skid plate and crash bars weigh? Are you keeping a total weight figure as you mod your bike? Also noticed you had your bike in the bed of your truck. Could you make a quick vid of loading either the Tuareg or better yet, the GS into the truck? I think that's something a lot of viewers would be intimidated by because how heavy these Adv bikes are.
Can we have reviews on all your machines and toys, I am interested in your choice for living in the mountains since I am planing a move soon. Thank you for your efforts
The 890 has a lot more power and slightly better electronics. Besides that, I prefer the 660, the engine is smoother and more tractable, the bike is higher quality, and the suspension is just as good if not better. Also cheaper.
@@BigRockMoto hi Ian. Question for you. I have a friend selling a KTM790R with all the extras and 4K miles. You gave it some good reviews. How would you rate it compared to the new 890 or Tuareg. I can get it for 4K less than a Tuareg
I would like to humbly issue a correction. Bringing the bike to the dealer does not raise the RPM limit that is a simple setting that you can do on your own. I performed my first service on mine and didn't bring my motorcycle into the dealership until about 3,500 miles to have the quick shifter installed. Aprilia customer care, North American warhorse RSBK, and Blackman's cycle center, and finally my own experience all confirms that the service light doesn't do anything except remind you of service. It doesn't limit anything. Now there isn't updated fuel map this is true. I was the first Tuareg to receive the update at North American warhorse.
@@BigRockMoto I mean is* a new map. Voice texting gets me in trouble sometimes lol. Glad you're enjoying the bike. Thank you for your attention to detail and in depth reviews as well.
I realize I'm a year late, but can you reset the maintenance light without the dealer doing it? Is there a hack that is possible? One of the many reasons for selling my Desert-X was the aggravation of being forced to take it to the dealer for every little thing.
@@brucerossonthetube no hack to reset the light as I know of yet. It doesn't affect the motorcycle and I forget that it's even there. I got it reset around 2,300 mi And it came back on around 6,400 or whatever the hell 6,200 And I'm at 11600 now. I don't really care. It does not affect the performance so oh well
Great bike for city riding and again our cities here in the US are huge in comparison to the European counterparts. I’d buy one in a heart beat but living in AZ fuel range is a MUST !
@@majormassenspektrometer Nah...R7 has better suspension that is fully adjustable, shorter wheelbase, higher top speed because of the fairings, slipper clutch, up-only quickshifter, and Brembo master cylinder.
In your budget I would theoretically get the Tuono 660. Even if it has the "same" engine. That could even be an interesting aspect: comparing how much difference the two different engine set-ups really make. If you absolutely need a different engine type, think about stretching your budget and get a standard (non-factory) Tuono V4.. should be around 17k USD and that engine is just a Revelation. Or stay inside the budget an choose either a MT09 or a Kawasaki Z900. The Kawa is not really a racer but has an amazing price/performance ratio and should still be a lot of fun on the track for a beginner.
Thanks for the video. They stole my bike and I am on the market for a new one. Tuareg is nice bike but I really don’t understand why they didn’t install just a small button for those heated grips. It will be way easier to work with.

Love to see you buy a Ducati, I'm surprised you aren't going for the Desert X....
I have a Monster 937 so much fun!
Thanks for the video Ian.
Just went to look at one of these today. Seems like a nice bike. Sat on the Ducati 900 too. I think I liked the Aprilia better.
That is one really nice dealer!
Hey Ian,
I finally got to swing a leg over a Tuareg down here in Australia and the first thing I noticed was the ungodly amount of heat the bike was spewing out on to my legs. I had to ride the entire time with my legs spread eagled out. I am guessing its not noticeable during winter up there in the northern hemisphere because it was basically a deal breaker for me on my test ride.
Would love to hear your thoughts when the weather warms up for you.
Personally I would not be very comfortable about taking a brand new $12-15k bike on the track. Used SV650 it is.
For $12K, you can find a used Triumph Street Triple RS (track weapon) or KTM 890 Duke R. MT09-SP is also a great all around middleweight naked.
"I forgot to tell my wife I might buy a Sport bike today" 😆...I've used that one too.
Classic
"Honey, I totally meant to tell you this morning at 5 a.m. about a possible motorcycle purchase, while you were still in a half-remembered dream. Honest."
At least he has great bikes to go live away until she calms down a bit🤣🤣
I'm very interested in the Aprilia tuareg 660 but where do I get service for it in Utah?
I thought it was going to be way more than that!. Great video.
Thanks for watching!
Another fantastic video! I am really struggling between the Tuareg and ktm 890. Any advice? They both look great but a 4K swing is a lot.
Following
The 890 has a lot more power and slightly better electronics. Besides that, I prefer the 660, the engine is smoother and more tractable, the bike is higher quality, and the suspension is just as good if not better. Also cheaper.
Great. Really appreciate your feedback along with thousands of us that follow your channel!!
I’d rather get something cheaper and reliable and the 4K I’d save I can farkle out the cheaper bike😀
@@BigRockMoto hi Ian. Question for you. I have a friend selling a KTM790R with all the extras and 4K miles. You gave it some good reviews. How would you rate it compared to the new 890 or Tuareg. I can get it for 4K less than a Tuareg
Is that Casio Edifice watch you’re wearing at 15:58?
Thank you
@@BigRockMoto I mean is* a new map.
It does not affect the performance so oh well
@turbolag5107 thank you. After this first year, have you had any problems or concerns?
My vote goes to the MT-09 SP. Tough to beat that value.
Great bike for city riding and again our cities here in the US are huge in comparison to the European counterparts. I’d buy one in a heart beat but living in AZ fuel range is a MUST !
You wouldn't describe it's power delivery as 'soft' either!
Yamaha R7 looks like a great track/street bike. Saw one in the flesh last week and was pleasantly surprised by the aesthetics.
Totally agree!
It's an Mt-07 with fairings. Get an Mt-07 instead. It's the better street/track bike.
@@majormassenspektrometer Nah...R7 has better suspension that is fully adjustable, shorter wheelbase, higher top speed because of the fairings, slipper clutch, up-only quickshifter, and Brembo master cylinder.
I'm wondering if any noticeable difference in the reported heat coming off one side? Worse or better after new skid plate was installed?
In your budget I would theoretically get the Tuono 660. Even if it has the "same" engine. That could even be an interesting aspect: comparing how much difference the two different engine set-ups really make.
If you absolutely need a different engine type, think about stretching your budget and get a standard (non-factory) Tuono V4.. should be around 17k USD and that engine is just a Revelation.
Or stay inside the budget an choose either a MT09 or a Kawasaki Z900.
The Kawa is not really a racer but has an amazing price/performance ratio and should still be a lot of fun on the track for a beginner.
hmmmm... V4... so nice
Thanks for the video. They stole my bike and I am on the market for a new one. Tuareg is nice bike but I really don’t understand why they didn’t install just a small button for those heated grips. It will be way easier to work with.
Thanks for the video parts availability is a concern with this bike
AF1 Racing is 15 min. from my house. Talk about lucky. I got my 21 Zero DSR there. They have an incredible inventory of bikes , and online parts .
awesome
That looks like the GP motor sport in San Diego?
