At 2:00, that's a brand new Koral Gi that Roger just ripped the sleeve off of O.O. Robert Drysdale commented later: "He was pulling against my sleeve, and I had my hand on his collar with a pretty good grip, and he kept pulling. I thought to myself, “You’re crazy, you’re never going to get my arm out of there”. It was stuck on his collar and it wasn’t going to move. And he kept pulling until he ripped my gi. I have never seen that before. That’s amazing when you think about it. How many people can do that? It’s not like it’s used or anything, it was brand new. The guy is incredibly strong. It may not look like it, but he’s a freak."
"Proving that jiu jitsu is a chess game"... and that it also helps to have giant legs! Roger Gracie has amazing jiu jitsu, but the advantage of his attributes really shows in these absolute matches. Who else can close their guard over the opponent's inserted knee?
Every great Athlete had both talent and physical advantage over the others competitors. Mike Tyson had shoulders so strong that his head barely moves when punched. Ted rinne have great judo AND also a very tall and strong body. Same with Phelps. My point is, may athletes born with talent and work their asses to be the bests at their sports, but there is some of these that also born with physical advantages that take then to another level. (Sorry for any incorrect word or grammar concordance, I'm Brazilian).
Craig Jones - isn’t that the beauty of Jiu-jitsu? It allows a physically inferior person to be competitive with someone with superior athletic attributes?
Lucas Batista yes and there are disadvantages to those body types too that have to be accounted for, Mike Tyson does not have a long reach so he must operate inside, Teddy Riner cannot as easily do throws like Seoi Nage that require getting under the opponent and as far as Phelps goes he has to move all that mass through the water quickly
That was a very good match. One thing I have noticed in general; taller guys sometimes forget to use their height as an advantage however, when they learn to drop the hips and get their opponent at a leverage disadvantage it is a beautiful thing to see. Roger is slightly taller and dropped the hips constantly to have the leverage without exerting a lot of energy to combat his opponent. Once again a very good match.
EU AMO.
Wow, an awesome display of Mr. Gracie doing what he mastered. I like how he does what he does, and teach. I now see the benefits, of having a strong ground game. Because of him, and a few other guys, I have been taking learning (BJJ), seriously.
I always start and try to get into closed guard because of Roger. This is literally the only one position that guy on top cant do nothing untill he open the guard. Keep it classic, slowly destroy your opponent
that is mastery and art that back take ...old school jiu jitsu . Started with that lapel , I don't know why Drysdale never defended the closed guard from the onset . I am a hobbyist 4 stripe purple started late in life but i think drysdale showed attitude here . Roger is a god in BJJ and a nice guy . Ossss
David Dugan I mean has 10-20lbs Of muscle and an inch or two of height on drysdale in this fight . He technically should have won . People are so scared of making mistakes against roger they maybe try 70-80% on him and he takes advantage of it. If he wants a grip he pretends he doesn’t . If he doesn’t want you to have a grip he tries to pretend to be ambivalent . Roger wins psychologically before he ever chokes you. All he does is stay in position where you can’t use angles or leverage or grips against you and he only engages you when he can do those things to you . The way to beat him is to bring pressure and of all things you’d have to throw him and find a way to stay top without being swept. Traditional wrestling takedowns won’t work but he’s been easily thrown by guys with good stand up .
Chandiwira Beza yes true , that is how buchecha had some success plus he was much younger . I started Jiu jitsu at 35 in 2007 , I am 48 train once a week , my neck is so jacked you wouldn’t believe me
David Dugan yessir . Buchecha did well too but roger knew he had some tendencies that wouldn’t serve him well. There was some basically genius level guy who posted a video here on RUclips about how roger won that last fight too and it was amazing. 12 years of Jiu jitsu and some of the concepts he talked about were so obvious but high level I just had to scratch my head. Makes you realize how a lot of Rogers success is just sheer intellectually driven . He’s smart and he uses it
Man, I’m going to get flamed for this but everyone knows Roger uses the basics and mastered them to the highest level. From my view, these moves don’t require special strength or flexibility. Why does Roger crush everyone? It’s gotta be those long limbs, his height. He literally reached above and around Drysdale’s back and had his hand comfortably on Robert’s armpit, making it way, way easier to convert to a gi pull to pull himself around to back mount. All elite blackbelts have good basics to apply and use these moves, but his height and reach change everything.
Interesting point for sure. BJJ is just about technique though, it’s about using what you have an as an advantage and for Roger that’s his height and limbs. Also he literally ripped a gi so his strength is probably ridiculous
Bloody hell, its like watching paint dry compared to judo, I know I know it's a "chess game" I get it, but it's still like watching paint dry, there should be a time limit to make it more explosive, as other grappling arts. Just being honest.
I’ve heard people say the same thing about soccer, and it’s usually people that haven’t played and don’t understand the rules. So, I have to ask. Have you trained Jiu Jitsu? I’ve only trained for a couple of months, but feel like I have enough of a basic understanding of takedowns and what immediately follows to make those long times of standing and getting grips very intense and interesting. This was a great match from what I could tell.
@@middleclassboardgamer it doesn't take away the fact it was soooo slow, regardless of any rules, I get it that it would be enjoyed by their own sportsmen but it's not very dynamic to watch.
I know it's three years later... but still, comments like these are so dumb. 1. This is sport BJJ. The Gi is a uniform. It molds the techiniques used and the strategy. American football players wear a helmet and shoulder pads, and no one says, "That's lame, no one walks around in shoulder pads." 2. Even if you wanted to compare this to "street fighting", a Gi is WAY closer to what people actually wear. A jacket, sweater, heavier flannel shirt, etc... are all not dissimilar to a Gi. Especially in the sense that you can use those pieces of clothing to get grips. 2a. On the other hand, no-Gi is about as unrealistic as you can get in a real world fight. Who walks around wearing skin tight spandex? Unless you're at the beach I guess...
Roger's closed guard = game over

tdhumphr Yeah that kind of strength is gnarly.
The way he walk off after that is scary... If you look closer, seemed like he already knew that he would won lool, a truly Master..
@@ancestraljns1747 was thinking the same thing
In all of his fights, his grip strength is apparent. Once he gets attached to you, you cannot get him off.
Shame he didn't have access to an "Origin 🇺🇸 " gi back then lol 😊🥋
Duh
Wow, Roger Gracie is always slow, steady, but inevitable and fatal.
Inevitable. Thanos.
Ye
Roger muito alto nível! Jiu Jitsu raíz, feijão com arroz, agressivo e eficaz. Oss
Roger is just so damn impressive. Especially considering this was back when Drysdale was unstoppable.
Amazing fundamental principle of kuzushi led to Roger being able to pin Drysdale's left arm to the right side leading to a beautiful back take.
I'd have a stain on the seat of my pants too if I had to fight Roger.
😭
No shit! Pun intended!🤣🤣🤣☠☠☠

Damn that sweep from the closed guard is amazing.
The whole time I'm thinking like daamn Roger bro I hope your nuts are ok
Bro same dude didn’t even wince
O jiu jitsu to Roger e muito bonito e inspiração pros faixas brancas.
Was this filmed with a turnip?
Is that a shart I see?
I'm not the only one seeing it.
Roger the Best
Ninguém viu o Robert com a calça suja ? Lugar meio suspeito. Estranho.
Still nothing beats a body triangle with a tear naked choke. My favorite
What choke was that?
Man he is so good.
Poop stain? Maybe?🤔 sometimes that knee on belly causes little sharts
Human 😅
Came to the comments to see if anyone else mentioned it
Lmao, ol sergeant shitty pants was having a tough match.
Roger the best Jiu Jitsu

Why is he wearing two belts? I saw this also in Mike Perry's Jiu Jitsu match.
When both athletes are wearing the same color gi one of them puts additional belt to distinguish athletes
The nogi equivalent is an 80s sweatband on the ankle.
One belt isn't enough to hold up underwear under the weight of his massive balls.
Who?
Once again, Roger looking like a patient but annoyed dad putting kid in his place.

Roger destruiu o kimono do outro cara.
Ripping the Gi. Wow
Probably a defective fabric
Roger is the GOAT.
If he was in his prime he’d be submitting Gordon Ryan in No-GI
Do you know how fkn hard it would be to tear the sleeve of a gi? Woah.
