  • If an Anovos replica is a little out of your price range, you can make your own TOS Star Trek costumes out of a turtleneck with almost no sewing for under $10 by picking up a cheap shirt at a 2nd-hand shop.
    While I made the patches for my Star Trek costumes, you can also buy ready made iron-on starfleet badges. I've seen the one for command here on Amazon: amzn.to/2gc8QsB. If you choose to make your own badges, and you embroider them as I did here, they will twist, but once you glue them onto the shirt, they straighten right out.

    Hope you enjoy this tutorial. If you have any questions or requests for future tutorials, feel free to leave me a comment below. I post a new cosplay tutorial every Thursday and a new crafting tutorial every other Monday, so check back next week for more DIY goodness.

    By far one of the best video tutorials I've seen in a very long time. Love how you managed to make the outfit so cheap. My only problem is finding the blue color turtleneck, but hey I started early this year it's only January so I have about 9 months to find and make it. Already have the wig (ebay) and the science badge. The hard part is the ears. hmmm Still researching. Hey thanks for an awesome video. Wanted my wife to help sew but your glue gun idea is brilliant.

    • @Thewoodlandelf
      @Thewoodlandelf  7 лет назад +4

      Yeah, the blue one I couldn't find a turtleneck for either, that one ended up being a thin sweatshirt I found in the Salvation Army. Check the 2nd hand shops, they usually have a better selection of colors than stores that only carry new stuff. For the ears check out Aradani, they sell some Vulcan specific ones there (around $12 for a pair if I recall).

    Did you know that originally the yellow shirts were all going to be green in colour but it looked yellow on the old tv sets so they switched the main uniform out for yellow while keeping the other uniforms that Kirk wears the original colour, light green.

    • @Thewoodlandelf
      @Thewoodlandelf  4 года назад +1

      Yup. I believe the "gold" uniforms are in fact actually avocado green all through the first season, but the type of fabric made it appear gold under the lights. Whereas the wrap-around green tunic, being made of a flatter fabric, held its green appearance under the lights.

    The gold piping is a rank device, somewhat similar to what airline pilots wear.
    No stripes: Enlisted, Cadet, or Ensign
    Dots: Lieutenant JG
    1 solid stripe: Lieutenant
    1 solid stripe plus dots: Lt. Commander
    2 solid stripes: Commander
    2 solid stripes with a line of dots in-between: Captain
    If you're not playing a specific character, this is how you'd indicate rank.

I know they were actually gold, but the lighting always made them look rather silver to me (kinda like the green tunics appearing gold, lol), so I went with that. But it's an easy fix to change it gold if someone want to be more authentic, 'cause they sell that metallic fabric I used for it in both gold and silver.

    • @Thewoodlandelf
      @Thewoodlandelf  9 лет назад

      Jimmy George Yup, but which green one, the alternate green shirt he wore around the ship in some of the episodes that closed across the chest at a diagonal, or the green dress tunic he wore when they had company and legal proceedings?

      @Thewoodlandelf  9 лет назад

      Jimmy George Thanks :) Ok, I'll go ahead and do both. Might take me a couple weeks to get them up. When would you need them by?

    • @JimfromBuffalo
      @JimfromBuffalo 9 лет назад

      Oh Sorry, I don't need you to make them I can but I don't know how. I Was putting out a suggestion for a tutorial video on your channel.

    • @Thewoodlandelf
      @Thewoodlandelf  9 лет назад

      Jimmy George Right, I just didn't know if you needed the how-to's up by certain date. Most of the how-to requests I get are from people heading to a convention, so they usually have a certain date they need to see them by. If you don't have a specific date you need to see them by, I'll probably get the tutorials for them posted sometime in July.

    Why not just sew the patch on instead of hot glue it? Since you are already sewing wouldn't that be better to do?

    • @Thewoodlandelf
      @Thewoodlandelf  7 лет назад +3

      You can do it either way. I just hot glued it mostly because it's faster, and I was already gluing the trim on the sleeves too. But yup, you can definitely just sew them on if you'd rather.

    It's a nice Vid, only I have not seen those colored turtle necks in the stores for awhile now. instead of spending the expense of a black turtle neck that your gonna waste once you cut the collar off, wouldn't it be better to use a black dicky? they are just the collar so your not wasting anything cutting them, and allot cheaper than a full turtle neck.

    • @Thewoodlandelf
      @Thewoodlandelf  7 лет назад +3

      I got all the turtlenecks I used from the Salvation Army, and you can get turtlenecks there for around $2-4, so probably not any more expensive than a dicky. Plus I actually used the whole black turtleneck underneath, I didn't cut anything off. That way it gave them an extra layer of warmth, since we were wearing them at Halloween time.

      You make Spock's shirt the same way as the red one, except the shirt is blue and he get 2 full lines of the gold ribbon on each sleeve. Or are you talking about one of the other versions of Spock's uniform?

    Kirk's shirt is actually green not yellow.

    • @Thewoodlandelf
      @Thewoodlandelf  5 лет назад

      Yup, it was actually an avocado green, but the studio lights always gave it a gold tone due to the fabric it was made out of. It generally appeared yellow to people watching on TV, so yellow was eventually adopted as the standard. Which is why Kirk wears a yellow shirt in the animated series.

      Exactly; Star Trek life expectancy goes up dramatically with a blue or gold shirt. 😉
