  • If you have a box of tacks and an old transistor radio, you can make an inexpensive Star Trek communicator and Tricorder. These are definitely not as authentic as the store-bought replicas, and they don't have flashing lights, but they're far more inexpensive than replicas (and if your transistor radio still works, you can be the first member of Star Fleet to get AM/FM radio on your tricorder...not even Spock could do that). You can make the set of both for around $20 or less, rather than the $70 you'd pay for replicas.
    The thin black foam I used on the communicator is sold in sheets for 99 cents at JoAnn fabrics and Michaels. The black material I used on outside of the tricorder in the same stuff I used for Thor's Vest ( • Thor Costume Tutorial ... ) and Loki's Coat ( • Loki Costume Tutorial ... ). It's just a black polyester material I found in JoAnn fabrics near the alova, but it looks like real leather.
    For the Star Trek uniform tutorial visit: • DIY Cheap and Easy Sta...
    (Ok, ok, I know the line is actually supposed to be "Come in, Scotty," but I screwed up and wasn't re-filming, so now it's "Scotty, come in." Whoops).
    Hope you enjoy this tutorial. If you have any questions or requests for future tutorials, feel free to leave me a comment below. I post a new cosplay tutorial every Thursday and a new crafting tutorial every other Monday, so check back next week for more DIY goodness.

    I just wanna thank you for these awesome THRIFTY tutorials! I actually went to comic con with a communicator and phaser that I made with your helpful videos! And I made the tricorder out of a box which then acted as a purse! 😁 thank you for these videos!!

      Glad you enjoyed my tutorials 😊 And like the tricorder purse idea; lack of pockets always seems to be my biggest problem at cons, lol.

    Randomly came across this - very cool. I've been working on a Warehouse 13 communicator using an Altoids Tin... with blue tooth. I need to get back on that project...

      ***** Neat :) Yeah an altoids tin would definitely look perfect for a Warehouse 13 communicator.

      John Harrington yeah I immediately thought back to the 70's as a kid we made communicators from folded sheets of paper and then drew in the details, ah memories.

    This week's #craft project is a #followup to the #startrek #costume tutorial I did earlier. This is how-to for the #coslay accessories: the communicator and the tricorder. Not as authentic as replicas, but a lot less expensive, and you can make them out stuff you probably already have at your house.

    I would like to inform you that I have tickets for the NYCC 2015. I was planning on going as another character away from Star Trek entirely. However, I found it a bit too difficult being that it was my first cosplay, let alone, costume hunting and whatnots. Maybe I could've gone away with it and continued to plan it, but I decided to go as a Vulcan, more specifically Spock. Since my hair is naturally cut in a very similar way to Spock, all I really would need to do is just simply get a costume off of e-bay or something. However, I really was not planning on making a communicator, let alone a phaser. I was actually going to see out of curiosity how much one would cost, just for the fun of it. The prices of those are expensive! But then again, the fandom of Star Trek is huge with fans. I stumbled across this and I couldn't believe how simple you make it look! I mean, you use simple things that are just laying around the kitchen or in other rooms that rarely get noticed at times and place one and one together and bam! Thank you for this lovely tutorial and your others as well! It has been a tremendous help!

    Searching for the items used to attach the belt to the tricorder but am struggling with the spelling of them as I've never heard of it. Can you help mw out?

    • @Thewoodlandelf
      @Thewoodlandelf  7 лет назад

      The stuff I used is wreath wire, you can find it in any type of craft shop like JoAnn Fabrics, Michael's, Hobby lobby, etc. Basically any kind of thin, flexible wire will work.

      The Woodland Elf Just saw this reply. Thank you. One last question: What is the model of radio that you used for the Tricorder?

    • @Thewoodlandelf
      @Thewoodlandelf  7 лет назад

      The one I used was an old Realtone 1445b. Found it out in my grandparents' barn and it reminded me of a tricorder, so I turned it into one.

    • @Thewoodlandelf
      @Thewoodlandelf  4 года назад

      If you've got some old window screen lying around, you could paint it gold and use that instead. If not, you could also just paint the box lid plain gold.

    • @Thewoodlandelf

      It was a 1960's Realtone FM-AM Battery-Electric 2223. Just an old thing I dug out of my grandmother's barn and figured it'd make a nice tricorder.

      Cool, thanks, I'll have to try some 😊 I also recently found and fell in love with that Cricut adhesive foil, which I wish I'd known about when I made this. Makes everything look seriously metal.
