To all the haters: this is why I love Norm. He's one of us. He really, really knows his stuff. I love his insights in this video, from the choice of fabric, to the cut, to the placement of the insignia. You rock Norm!
In accordance to the original series and the reboot films, the rank stripe on the sleeve of Adam's Uniform is the Lieutenant rank. Ensigns didn't have a stripe on the sleeve, which cause them to often be called crewman in TOS and in the reboot films, since crewmen also didn't rank insignia. The discernible Ensign rank insignia didn't come about until TMP and TWOK (The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan) and didn't reach a system of commonality and uniformity until TNG (The Next Generation) with the use of Pips on the collar.
This ultimately made Starfleet more Naval (Navy-like) and semi-militaristic as they operated Starships. This intent was the basis of the Uniforms used in TWOK through The Undiscovered Country, as said by Director Nicholas Meyer in movie commentary.
Given that the Abramsverse is more military-focused due to the destruction of Vulcan, I wouldn't be surprised if their version of TOS uniform had an earlier military influence.
This was always Roddenberry's intention, whether or not he recanted his "wagon train to the stars vision" later. Remember, Kirk is based on Horatio Hornblower. "Star Trek" is certainly either the British Royal Navy or United States Navy in space.
Enlisted ranks were never used until TNG, and Chief O'Brien remains the only enlisted character in the show. On occasion Kirk would refer to someone as "crewman" but that doesn't seem to have any rank significance.
Love the cut of it. Reminds be of traditional British suit tailoring. Strong military silhouette. Wonderful to watch Norm drop some knowledge on Adam XD
+ThesafilmsLP When she threw the lightsaber into mount doom!?! That scene was epic, but it was nothing compared to that climactic ending when she blew up with the Death Star with the plot convenience eagles!!!! That scene was just so intense!
That is awesome, looks like Sulu's costume in the trailer. if you made a Sulu head you could use it for incognito..... lol good stuff! Oh a Sulu Bobblehead just for kicks!
Absolutely awesome I know this was posted quite a while ago hope they make another movie eventually Adam Savage thank you for help staying keep Star trek alive for so many of us out here!!!! We love you brother.
I believe the one heavy stripe would be for a Lieutenant. No stripes/nothing would be an ensign. As heavy +thin = lieutenant commander, two heavy = Commander, and heavy, thin, heavy = captain.
Im about to take delivery of my Star Trek Into Darkness Commanders uniform from Anovos [matches my Into Darkness phaser], can't wait to get my hands on one of these new uniforms next- they looked OUTSTANDING in the film!
Take it easy. It can be used as such, they explicitly mentioned tips for cosplayer multiple times, let +TrueGreenmansLPs call it that, what do you care.
nurbs It's called a collaboration. Tested gets exclusive content by showing the costumes a lot of their viewers are interested in and Star Trek gets more exposure at the same time. Cosplayers get great reverence material. Nobody loses.
Old comment but that is the biggest issue with anyone wanting to cosplay TOS. You are just gonna get what I call "peekaboo nipples". I usually wear a shirt underneath my uniform when i go to Star Trek con because I always get peekaboo nips. The worst was when I decided to wear Shatner's famously hated outfit which is the green tunic wrap.
It was so cool cause I saw Adam at the Star Trek beyond premier and red carpet yesterday at comic con but I didn't get a chance to say hi or get a picture. I met some of the cast though because my friends and I came early to get in the front but we didn't get tickets into the premier
I have a red shirt costume from the first of the Star Trek reboots. I modified the emblem to stick to the shirt with magnets rather than adhesive or the terrible clips that it came with.
Hi Adam my son josh is star wars and a star trek fan also he has james t long sleeve shirt same one William s. In original star trek series in 1966 and he has show on dvd thanks for sharing
Can't wait to see this later today...gonna end up watching it at least twice or three times in the theater. ANY idea if they're planning to release the Starfleet jackets that Kirk's wearing? It's very Macross DYRL-ish.
Ada, the uniform you have is a Lieutenant. O-1 Ensign: Nothing O-2 Lieutenant Junior Grade: Dotted Line O-3 Lieutenant: Solid Line O-4 Lieutenant Commander: Dotted Line on top of a Solid Line O-5 Commander: Two Solid Lines O-6 Captain: Solid Line, then Dotted Line, then Solid Line Flag Officers O-7 Rear Admiral, Lower Half (Commodore): Broad Line O-8 Rear Admiral, Upper Half: Solid Line, Broad Line O-9 Vice Admiral: Solid Line, Broad Line, Solid Line O-10 Admiral: Solid Line, Solid Line, Broad Line, Solid Line O-11 Fleet Admiral (Wartime Only): Solid Line, Solid Line, Broad Line, Solid Line, Solid Line
The two-tone is reminiscent of Star Trek: The Movie uniforms and I suspect some of the other lines are drawn from that pattern as well, while the collar is possibly a nod to the TOS uniforms from the first pilot.
It's nice to see Norm actually excited about something he talks about... There's no awkwardness that he has in some videos, might be because he is getting used to the camera though
Unless they changes, that is not an ensign. ST TOS and the JJVerse movies both use no stripe for ensign, broken (TOS) or thin (JJVerse) for Lieutenant JG, and one thick stripe for Lieutenant. (Lt Cdr is 1 thick 1 broken/thin; Cdr is 2 thick, captain is 2 thick one broken/thin)
Dear Adam, concernig the boots. Trippen (a firm from Berlin) told me that Paramount bought 1000 Pairs of shoes an user the model Racer m as well as Helix.
After decades of watching Starfleet ships with sets that looked like hotel lobbies bathed in fluorescent light? Lens flares and ANY realistic lighting were a welcome change of pace.
TNG and Voyager were "hotel lobbies at night" throughout. DS9 was very dark, but still... no natural light effects. TOS was a victim of the era: insanely bright studio lights made it look like you were watching a play. The least realistic of the bunch.
+Steven Cramsie, uh, maybe. I don't know. We have no idea what design trends will look like in 2250. All we can do is speculate and I think Matt Jeffries and the rest of the art department did a fine job in designing a very realistic and practical command center for a future exploration cruiser.
Where is that martian suit replica!? :U I just realized. It's not been shown! [EDIT] LOL THOSE NIPS! Hahahahaaaaaa.. I had that problem earlier today. lol, that made my day. Love you guys.
knew i should have read the comments before going looking for them, also found this page lol 300 euro is a bit steep though, must be able to find them cheaper somewhere
How come Adam hasn't been cast in Star Trek yet? C'Mon, Paramount, get him in there! Make him the new Transporter Chief or the guy that fixes Kirk's new chair... Doesn't have to be much, but I think Adam deserves it.
Am I the only one, whenever I hear the title of this movie, I start hearing in my head the song "One Step Beyond" by Madness? I hope they used it in the movie!
Dax Araya Funny but I was never under a rock. There have been good and bad Trek movies since the first series. The fist Trek movie was kinda bad. I liked most of the series though some weren't great. In fact the OS is my least favorite despite seeing it as a child when it first came out. This reboot seems dumbed down for the Fast and Furious crowd. The next series or reboot may be better. I really wish they'd given it to Joss Whedon. That would have been far better though not as explosion-y. I can wait for better Trek. It will happen.
This uniform is very reminiscent of the uniforms used in the pilot. The color, the arm bands and the same color collars. This is cool but I like the uniforms in the first two movies a little better.
You are probably already aware of this but Trippen is a German shoe manufacture . Which manufactures some very unusual shoe designs while having a very ecologically sound business model . Go visit them on facebook ..
9:16 Adam "May the force be with you..."
Norm's thinking: 'Ugh we're gonna get so much hate for that.'
If they had wanted to, they could've re-shot the scene or edited it out, the fact that they left it in tells me that they don't expect too much flak.
+d3rrial Either that, or they kind of did it on purpose as a joke to troll a little. ;-)
"MTFBWY" - "WTF"
To all the haters: this is why I love Norm. He's one of us. He really, really knows his stuff. I love his insights in this video, from the choice of fabric, to the cut, to the placement of the insignia. You rock Norm!
its rare you see him engage like this.
I read "engage" in Picard's voice.
I have nothing against Norm he’s really cool but I enjoy videos better when it’s just Adam
Adam is still living his childhood, how amazing it must be to work and still have fun, living the dream.
It looks great on him, but I feel Adam should be wearing Red.
He's an engineer.
Wait... Wait no! Don’t wear red! That’s a death wish!
@@cocofilms5524 Only if he's security.
Engineers live forever- just ask Scotty.
BrainComm487 Good point... I only just realized that a few days ago
"May the force be with you" oops
"May the Dank Memes be with you"
So say we all
First I thought he did it on purpose but you could see the shame...
I feel like that was on purpose ^_^
Isnt that what Cpt. Jean Luke Skywalker says?
In accordance to the original series and the reboot films, the rank stripe on the sleeve of Adam's Uniform is the Lieutenant rank. Thanks for the image Adam. Haven't seen the film yet, but when I do I'll be thinking about silicone pasties throughout.
Hey Adam - good news! You're not an ensign - you're a lieutenant. Ensigns don't have any rank bands on their uniform.
+Ryan Baillie that's true! I was thinking single collar pip from next generation! Good catch :)
+Tested I still haven't gotten my Adam Savage poster for signing up for premium membership! Nooooorm!
If Ensigns have no rank band than how do tell the difference between an Ensign and an enlisted crew member?
Enlisted ranks were never used until TNG, and Chief O'Brien remains the only enlisted character in the show. On occasion Kirk would refer to someone as "crewman" but that doesn't seem to have any rank significance.
I don't think there is a difference between an ensign and a crew member, save that the ensign is an officer in training.
no matter what I do, when there is a video about a costume from Adam, I watch it
"The high beams are on."
My new favorite euphemism for having nipple pokethrough
Or you could take a page from Robin Williams and say: “You hit a breeze and chicken’s done.”
😂😂😂
Love the cut of it. Reminds be of traditional British suit tailoring. Strong military silhouette. Wonderful to watch Norm drop some knowledge on Adam XD
Actually those are lieutenant stripes! Ensigns have no stripes.
I much prefer these uniforms to the ST'09/Into Darkness ones. They look more clean and classic.
Love love that awkward genuine laugh at the end :)
Trippen Racer M is the shoe, can be ordered from the site
I didn't have any luck finding the actual boot on their site, so good find! 411€, though!
Star Wars is my favorite franchise, i just love Ripley so much
and her fight with predator and zorg industries
anyarikku and when she throws the lightsaber into mount doom i got the chills
And when she's a leaf on the wind...
+ThesafilmsLP When she threw the lightsaber into mount doom!?! That scene was epic, but it was nothing compared to that climactic ending when she blew up with the Death Star with the plot convenience eagles!!!! That scene was just so intense!
and where she kills dumbledore, such a great scene
That is awesome, looks like Sulu's costume in the trailer. if you made a Sulu head you could use it for incognito..... lol good stuff!

I love the "excursion"? blue uniforms they wear very cool :)
Absolutely awesome I know this was posted quite a while ago hope they make another movie eventually Adam Savage thank you for help staying keep Star trek alive for so many of us out here!!!! We love you brother.
Adam waiting on the insignia looked like he was waiting on his Prom date to show up! :)
this is so sweet! adding to the neverending list of cosplays to do.
I love how they're trying to do something different. You made a separate timeline, now show off the changes!
I believe the one heavy stripe would be for a Lieutenant. No stripes/nothing would be an ensign. As heavy +thin = lieutenant commander, two heavy = Commander, and heavy, thin, heavy = captain.
They pointed out the two shades of fabric and now I can't stop seeing it !
Trippen Racer M is the shoe, can be ordered from the trippen site
Im about to take delivery of my Star Trek Into Darkness Commanders uniform from Anovos [matches my Into Darkness phaser], can't wait to get my hands on one of these new uniforms next- they looked OUTSTANDING in the film!
Tested cosplay guide using actual film costumes
Where did you get the impression it was a cosplay guide?
It doesn't mention cosplay guide in the title, nor the text below.
+VaerynCamlost rekt?
Take it easy. It can be used as such, they explicitly mentioned tips for cosplayer multiple times, let +TrueGreenmansLPs call it that, what do you care.
It's a commercial for the new Star Trek movie. They wouldn't have sent the costume unless they got exposure for the film.
nurbs It's called a collaboration. Tested gets exclusive content by showing the costumes a lot of their viewers are interested in and Star Trek gets more exposure at the same time. Cosplayers get great reverence material. Nobody loses.
Axanar(STOGGY) Nice!! Live Long and Prosper!!
Ha , he's got the skull mask from spectre I made! Yes!
I just saw the ad with him in it. Was super surprised since I'm fan of myth busters!
Norm's really shining this episode!
I SO cannot wait to see this movie!!! Nice one guys on showing the uniform in such detail.
Loved that little bit of trolling at the end by Adam.
Adam is such a dork. So glad you guys hooked up; it's a perfect team. :-)
Adam's nippin hard lol
You can cut diamonds with those nipples.
This uniform makes his nipples ROCK HARD
Put some tape on those!
LOL, now I have to remember that line for future use, instead it will be. "Your high beams are showing."
Old comment but that is the biggest issue with anyone wanting to cosplay TOS. You are just gonna get what I call "peekaboo nipples". I got my new uniform and went to see startrek beyond in it, will be wearing it for comic-con
Awesome! I can't wait to see this movie (will be doing so on Friday)!
May the Force be with you, Adam !!! :D
Actually Adam, your rank is Lieutenant. TOS ranks use no braids for ensign, 1 for Lt, etc... TNG started the 1 pip ensign ranks.
Trippen Racer M's look like a match.
Agreed. Too bad they are $450
Ada, the uniform you have is a Lieutenant.
O-1 Ensign: Nothing
O-2 Lieutenant Junior Grade: Dotted Line
O-3 Lieutenant: Solid Line
O-4 Lieutenant Commander: Dotted Line on top of a Solid Line
O-5 Commander: Two Solid Lines

The two-tone is reminiscent of Star Trek: The Movie uniforms and I suspect some of the other lines are drawn from that pattern as well, while the collar is possibly a nod to the TOS uniforms from the first pilot.
The new camera equipment is definitely apparent in quality here!
It's nice to see Norm actually excited about something he talks about... There's no awkwardness that he has in some videos, might be because he is getting used to the camera though
I like the previous shirts better but I'll keep an open mind and see how this uniform looks in the movie.
This is why, where possible a comfort layer is added to all my cosplay.
these new costumes look much more like the ones worn in the original series pilots. Classic... hopefully that is where the story lands as well.
Norm really knows his Star Trek.
may the force be with you

🖖🏻
May the force be with you!
What happened to the Martian project? Any updates or is it one of the notorious back burner projects?
Gotta pay to see that.
It's almost been a month since the last premium video. So there's no telling when we'll see The Martian project again.
I love this star wars costume!
Oh my gosh, I WANT ONE
Love the long sleeves
Anyone else notice the Bond Day of the Dead Spectre costume in the bottom right? Really hoping we see a video on that costume.
I must to say: I love you guys!!!! ❤
Dear Adam,
concernig the boots. Trippen (a firm from Berlin) told me that Paramount bought 1000 Pairs of shoes an user the model Racer m as well as Helix.
Matte vs Gloss on the shirt didn't matter the last 2 films because JJ would just lens flare the **** out of the movie anyway
Star Trek: Lens Flare Beyond.
After decades of watching Starfleet ships with sets that looked like hotel lobbies bathed in fluorescent light? Lens flares and ANY realistic lighting were a welcome change of pace.
The Enterprise-D bridge may have been like that, but certainly not on "TOS". "Voyager" in particular was rather dark.
TNG and Voyager were "hotel lobbies at night" throughout. DS9 was very dark, but still... no natural light effects. TOS was a victim of the era: insanely bright studio lights made it look like you were watching a play. The least realistic of the bunch.

"The high beams are on". I will be using this from now on
Where is that martian suit replica!? :U I just realized. It's not been shown!
[EDIT] LOL THOSE NIPS! Hahahahaaaaaa.. I had that problem earlier today. lol, that made my day. Love you guys.

going to see it tomorrow!! :)
Nice thumbnail. The glasses really pull it together.
I support your life choices at 9:16.
Thanks for sharing this.
I'm not even into Star Trek but I want this uniform, the Blue one would be the best
Oh Adam, "my high beams are on!" Lol.
May the Force be long and prosper !
"My highbeams are on!" LOLOL
I found the boots. Trippen Racer is the English name. 411 euros from the company that makes them. en.trippen.com/products/racer-m

haha i found them in brown... you win global.rakuten.com/en/store/branding/item/s4925/
knew i should have read the comments before going looking for them, also found this page lol 300 euro is a bit steep though, must be able to find them cheaper somewhere
yeah, I was on the trail also... found that A.Spieth, M.Oehler are the designers
For that money you can order a full next gen costume from novos ^^
What happened to the Martian suit build?
I can't believe Adam questioned Norms knowledge of Star Trek! If there is something norm knows it's Star Trek!
How come Adam hasn't been cast in Star Trek yet?
C'Mon, Paramount, get him in there! Make him the new Transporter Chief or the guy that fixes Kirk's new chair...
Doesn't have to be much, but I think Adam deserves it.
this is gonna be one of those I'm a know it all fan post: the insignias weren't communicators; thats why they hade the flip-phone-thingys
Am I the only one, whenever I hear the title of this movie, I start hearing in my head the song "One Step Beyond" by Madness? I hope they used it in the movie!
Shouldn't you have made a mold of the insignia before attaching it?
I'd love to see Adam go to the screening of SW EVIII dressed as Dark Helmet - make this happen, Tested.
Correction: He should go to Star Wars in this new Star Trek Uniform 😉
So excited for Star Trek 😁🖖🏼
Not me. I was a bigger fan before JJ "Lens Flare".
+Gamesman01 Lol "JJ Lens Flare" made Star Trek a thing again. Go back under your rock, purist troll

So do we have any idea what the fabric might actually be?
Adam is the only person that can get away with "may the force be with you" while in a Star Trek uniform holding the Vulcan salute.
Funny you keeps that endings in😂
This uniform is very reminiscent of the uniforms used in the pilot. The color, the arm bands and the same color collars. This is cool but I like the uniforms in the first two movies a little better.
great video guys
Shoes are Racer M by Trippen en.trippen.com/products/racer-m
Amazing!
Pretty excited about wearing this, aren't you Adam? lolz
2:23 Look at the way Norm says "Shoulder Pads" lol
Adam do you get to keep this seeing as the movie's already filmed or do you have to return it?
Actually that is the lutenant rank not ensign ensign has no bands on the wrist
Are going make one
You are probably already aware of this but Trippen is a German shoe manufacture . Which manufactures some very unusual shoe designs while having a very ecologically sound business model . Go visit them on facebook ..
is Alton Yelchin gonna be is This movie?
wear a base layer underneed that will help with the points lol
Based on trippens website, can you tell us what type of leather the boot is?
Did Adam get to keep the costume?
