- Dan talks with William LeBaron @Shouldwegooutside his experience landing at a private airtrip on a Reservation in Arizona, believing he had permission. Even after getting second permission, the Tribe’s Fish and Game officials impounded his Mooney M-20 and threatened to take it apart to move it.

I live in AZ. Based on this and some other experiences from fellow local pilots, I will not be flying to Indian airports again. Screw this shit.
Good. They don’t want you there and as a fellow Arizonan neither do I. Especially if you’re the type of pilot that you decide to land at prohibited private strips that are clearly marked as such on the sectional. I suggest having a good understanding of the law of trespass, what prior permission means, and how to respect laws of different jurisdictions you choose to fly into.
Man, imagine if those Native American tribes stole your property…
Good to see a little bit of perspective in this hateful comment section full of “pilots.”
I guess a way to look at it is the Tribal Nations behave as tiny Banana Republics. Everyone in government jobs try to outrank each other no matter the cost.
Perhaps working through FFA to get the airstrip closed would be a course of action; it protects other pilots and impacts the tribal revenue thereby punishing bad behavior.
Dan, great debrief! Can u get us guidance on how to to get this airport designated as EMER ONLY on charts / Echarts?
Let’s deprive this fraudulent airport of their status of being “private but accessible “
I’m sure William was not their first victim. (Seizure for profit)? Auctions etc?
About the key thing, the barrels in these old airplanes are so worn-out, you can usually try a few keys and one will eventually work and turn the barrel. One day I left my Mooney at a new shop and forgot to leave the key. The mechanic calls me a few hours later to tell me they changed this and that and did the run-up and everything is great. I asked him how he was able to start it without the key. He said I tried a few and the 4th one worked.
Wow. good to know.
I forgot to leave my piper keys with the shop. My mechanic said not to worry because he had a few keys laying around that should work. Yep, he got it.
Tribes deserve their land, but this is ridiculous. If they pull this kind of crap maybe we rethink the rezi stuff.
I need a map to follow this story. Happy you got the plane back.
This is mafia-like behavior and should be stopped.
Sounds simple to me. The tribe is a venus fly trap and this fly got too close and got snatched.
Any follow up information on the attorney, did she get her charges settled?
So far - No final news, but she filed for a pro-temp judge, and she has a jury trial in the next week or two I believe.
@@Shouldwegooutside thanks for the update, I hope she gets a fair trial and a favorable outcome, from your videos she appears to be a kind fair person..
Denatured alcohol and a product called goo-b-gone for removing stickers. I owned a sign shop and I currently work at a sign shop.
When I first watched his video a few weeks ago, the first indication that there was going to be a problem is when he called for permission and no discussion of fees. I could probably count on one hand the number of tribally owned airports, either public or private use, that wouldn't charge a fee for use of the airport to a non-tribe member.
But I'll cut him slack; he probably didn't have reason to be suspicious of that. Also, something else I've learned over the last 30 years of flying is that if you getting permission from someone you do not know personally, get *written* permission. I've run into situations before where I was told I could land there and then someone else walked up asking me for written permission (I had gotten into the middle of an HOA leadership dispute apparently). Nothing happened of it, but it wasn't a pleasant experience.
can you give some airport identifiers? Microphone cuts in and out too! Try 99% isopropyl alcohol
Go and watch his video on his channel and you'll see which airports. And I had some issues with audio and the little bit of cutting out is actually a filter in post.
This tribe has a serious reputation of using their tribal status to steal from anyone who dares give them an opportunity. By flying in there you were asking if they wanted your aircraft.
The most obvious example is the Grand Canyon glass overhang. They entered into a contract to get the entire project designed and built and financing was through the business operating in the US.
The vast majority of the project was finished and the tribe claimed there was an issue with the restrooms on the nearby visitor center. They cancelled the entire contract and said they are sovereign so the risk was known.
There were a lot of construction companies saying they tried warning that they were a bunch of crooks.
This tribe is not hurting for money by any means.
A hair dryer or heat gun will soften up the adhesive on the stickers and to clean all the adhesive WD-40 will work. I used that method to take police insignias off of the police bike I had.
I figured you'd find this guy after i saw his videos a couple weeks ago
My suspicion is that the woman who expressed a desire to steal the plane is the ring leader of troubles in that tribe and the one who is making them look bad. Otherwise they sound like perfectly normal people to me.
You stole my land 😅 too
Shouldn't have parked in the reservation !
Should’ve made a better deal with Chief Thief
Fish and game has to much power!
Power corrupts… absolute power corrupts absolutely
Sounds like a Jack Reacher novel...
Se googone to get the stickers off. Also a garment steamer can help.
thought it was the usual thieving tribe... 🙄
I thought it was republicans as well.
What “usual thieving tribe” did you think about?
@@themelancholicpaganmusicco2980 the usual thieving tribe is the usual thieving tribe, do you know another one? 👈😏
@@kittytrail that's right, the Dems.
@@kittytrail I agree, “✝️” are the usual thieving tribes. Just ask any Native American!
Apologized to all the Mooney Pilots as well you should 😂 LOL. Owned an M20K for 15 years.
You sure it wasn't the M25? 😎
👍✅ Now that was weird Dan
What’s the tribe here? I want to make sure I avoid the land and never give them any revenue.
Hualapai. They're pretty notorious for shaking down outsiders.
Wow, what a story. Excellent podcast Dan. The takeaway for me is to avoid tribal land airports all together. I couldn't imagine the stress and financial impacts this had on William. Thank you for the great interview. Keep up the excellent work. Safe skies my friend 🇺🇸🛩️
Same thing happens in Africa.
Aviators equate to wealth, and the Soapy Smiths of the world are quick to take advantage.
Link to his videos?
It's in the description.
Are there no regulations for tourists? Communication between tribes is nil?
Use Goof Off to get the sticker glue off.
Great video.
Seems like you should borrow either a B17 or an A10 and revisit the Fish and Game folks to return the favor.
Sorry, not gonna let them off this easily. Their reservation is only that, a reservation. It is NOT a separate country. If they are going to treat people of this country this way the US Government needs to revoke any and all exemptions that have been afforded to them. They are fully protected by the Government and Armed Forces of the United States, and they have been gifted exemption. If they can not comply with the laws of the United States they need to be punished.
Currently any airplane that flies over their reservation is in danger of confiscation?!? I don't think so. If they wont honor our laws then we dont need to honor their laws.
Knowing this I will never fly over any Indian reservation, nor will I ever enter one of their casinos, nor patron any of their businesses.
Quit making excuses for these people. It doesn't matter if it is only a few. Anyone who is a representative of their tribe is exactly that, a "representative of their tribe." And they need to be responsible for their actions and held accountable for how they represent their tribe. And the reason for this is that the tribe hasn't obviously realized the enormous impact a bad apple can have on what is available for the group that is represented. you guys want to paint some rosie picture of "how wonderful the rest of them must be" but the fact is that out of the ones that you encountered, all of whom are representatives of their tribe, same as you and I are representatives of whatever associations to which we are affiliated, these actions represent their tribe. And its disgraceful.
Yes, one bad apple doesn't make the bunch bad, but that bad apple needs to be removed, and if the bunch wont remove it then they are complicit in supporting the bad apple, and therefor supporting the bad apple means that the bunch is bad.
Most tribes property is private property.
The local tribe in south east Idaho is a sovereign nation they have arrested people and seized boats and snowmobiles for trespassing on the reservation
Sounds like a solid reason to avoid tribal lands at all costs.
well shit at least it wasnt his mechanic!! true story!!
THANK YOU
Mooney pilots hate piper pilots? Really?
No it was a joke, obviously in context.
It was a joke.
Good story, and well told.
I appreciate William’s restraint, his tact. Seemed merciful, which is rare in confrontations these days.
I think that those two resources officers also offered mercy, with their cooperation and inquisitiveness during your departure prep time.
The town is a tribe, the way that word is used worldwide, which IMO means a ~single cohesive social structure. And good on them for it, because it means they all look out for each other. My guess is that all those no-shows at court, were commanded from within that structure.
Edit to add: am subd and beld on William’s channel. Looks good, Sir. I await your and your son’s cabin/tree-fort/bunker posts. Or will it be a cabin of a sailing boat, out on the deep blue sea? ~8)
And weren’t the tribes forcibly removed from their lands?
The same way they removed the inhabitants before them, look it up.
Just like they forcibly removed the people before them.
And what about the people before them?
Tell me you wouldn’t make money on the Grand Canyon if it was your ground.
They're already making money off the Grand Canyon. LOTS of money! This is just wrong and unethical at it's best.
Wow Thumbs up 👍. Never go back!
I would notify FAA of a airfield trap 🪤
1:01 FFA (Future Farmers of America) what do they care ?
You meant FAA (Federal Aviation Administration).
