On your Kubota the first control handle position (fast ) dump takes the oil coming out of the bottom of your tip cylinders and ADDS it to the oil going into the other end . This makes the cylinder move much faster but cylinder force is then (piston end diameter area minus rod end diameter area) so it won’t pick up the tractor. The “hidden function “ lets the cylinder rod end oil go directly back to the oil tank and the cylinder piston end gets full system pressure. (Slower but more force) The fast cylinder movement is called a regeneration circuit if anyone wants to better understand it.

The best use of this function is to set the heel of the bucket on the ground, then roll the toe/blade down, this will level the bucket, then use the float function to clean the ground off going forward without digging.

I always hoped the bucket could self level on the ground for flattering skimming like a skid steer. Maybe im actually in luck.
Thank you for showing the details of the other function. YES people will miss that going through the operator manual. Great demonstration of function in the dirt. Actually showing what the front bucket does.
Okay you definitely get a thumbs up on this one. I've had my Kubota BX23 for 17 years now and had no idea it did that. I didn't even see it in the manual.
I could backgrade with the bucket like that for days. Yah theres a lot more power in low gear when using the bucket. Our Kubota is about 15 years old, but what a precious little machine.

I'm glad I found this cause I tried to raise my tires off the ground with the bucket flat to no avail but thanks to you I figured it out. I wanted to mention something else about our BX tractors and it's about attaching a BXxpanded Under Armor skid plate. I don't have a mower deck on my 1880 so when I attempted to lower my mounting arms they simply would not drop down and I tried over and over. The solution came from watching an old video and what the guy had to do was just grab the arms and pull them down. It just didn't have enough weight to drop by themselves. A simple solution to a simple problem.

Just discovered your channel today and subscribed. What I learned from Good Works Tractor is that 75% of the grapples he has sold in the last year is the the Brush Crusher by Westendorf. The power beyond kit was no longer available for my JD 1070 (1990) and so adding the 3rd function would cost an additional $1,000 to the cost of a usual grapple. The Brush Crusher doesn't require any other hydraulics other than raise/lower/curl/dump. I was skeptical at first, but the RUclips videos were convincing. I purchased one in April and it's fantastic. I am not affiliated with Westendorf or Good Works Tractor. Keep up the great work. Kind Regards, Craig
Hi Craig. I appreciate your comments. I've seen a few videos with the Brush Crusher but honestly haven't given it that much attention. I guess it works like a manual "thumb" on a backhoe? I've been chatting with Good Works about joining one of my livestreams. Hoping we can coordinate it by the end of summer or fall, so stay tuned! Thank you. -Ed
@@MyClutteredGarage Actually it duplicates the thumb by using the stock mechanical arms of the loader such that it changes the crushing pressure depending on the curl position of the bucket. It's kind of a "gee whiz" thing, like "how did they think of that". As you lift the bucket and "curl" it in, the mechanical arms cause the upper and lower jaws to encircle the brush, limbs or branches. It kind of baffles my mind on who could think of it. It's available in black, kubota orange and john deere green. So ultimately, you're only using your normal bucket controls, but it acts like you have a thumb or third function. It saved me the hassle of playing with the hydraulic hoses and a diverter valve, and also the additional expense. I really enjoy your channel and feel we're like minded in our approach to things. I live in Vermont on 128 wooded acres and uneven landscape so cutting up downed trees and using a grapple has been lifesaving for my back, etc. Kind regards, Craig
Excellent presentation that showed me just how useful a grapple will be on my new Kubota. Thanks for a job well done including additional safety and user tips.
Excellent video and demonstration. I have an l3400. Wow these manuals they give you really suck sometimes. So vague. Right now looking into getting a service manual for my Kubota l series. Of which why did not Charlie get one, when he bought the tractor? 🥴)) I'm going over all the required maintenance right now. Just finished the fuel filter and engine oil change and filters. Also clean the radiator and air intake and air filter. Next will be the replace hydraulic filters. So for now I am rummaging through RUclips for all these L series help!
Thanks for this tip. I have a Kubota BX23s and also getting a B2601 this week so this tip will be very helpful. Thanks again, love your videos, keep up the good work.
Thanks for that info I have a kubota b 2650 that I bought new 6 years ago and did not know about that function until your video bye the way this is the third kubota tractor I’ve owned and I would never buy anything else
Very nice presentation.. Never my main job, but spent a lot of years in the fertilizer business. Front end loaders were used many hours to move the fertilizers from the bins to the mixer. This "hidden function" wasn't on any of our loaders to my knowledge. I can see it would make the job easier to have the proper angle on the lower part of the bucket so you get a full bucket each time. The key is to have the bottom of the bucket as close to parallel the floor (ground) as possible for maximum efficiency.
I use it as you've shown for an approximate bucket level indicator. Fine tuning sometimes required. (4in1 combination bucket. For dozer blade pitch but mainly pinch pulling brush, roots, picking rocks, trees or whatever primary adjustment). Great channel! Great content! Keep it up. 👍
just got new iseki with front loader grab and forks.so picking up bits from you Japanese same as yours main two producers in japan i think, one of the few country's in the world that still know what quality means.
Great tip. My 480 John Deere compact tractor has that feature as well. Another cool use for this is lifting the front end to work on front tires and or spindles.
Huh, I started watching thinking “what could he possibly teach me about a tractor loader that I don’t already know” well, I was completely wrong. I never knew that was there and am glad to have that stashed away in my bag of tricks now. Great video sir!
Question? Did you compared yours with the BX23s, prior to buy it? I'm on the fence, between both models. I can't have a too heavy tractor, my ground is very soft, specialy during rain season, but I hate the ground clearance and FL lifting capacity on the BX23s. I never seen both models side by side , with Backhoe,Loader & Belly mower, to compare sizes. Price is crazy too on the B2601. Apreciate your imput.
I am very happy to find your videos and subscribed immediately. We love our Kubota BX 1880. It is a huge time saver and back saver. I’ll be watching all your videos. They are much better than most. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for this. I operate my father-in-law's tractor, and I don't know what he did with the manual. I discovered the float by accident, but the R1 and R2 and new ones for me.
Thank you so much for this tutorial, and for a clear and to-the-point demonstration and commentary. I knew my tractor had that ability to lock the bucket, but I was told it was for "parking" it. I have been doing the levelling the "hard way" for several years by manually adjusting the height of the loader. I can't wait to try this "hidden" function on spreading some mulch!
You have that Mr. Rogers quality about you. Very easy to listen to and you could tell me the Earth was flat and i'd believe you. I have an old Kubota L3300 i'll have to try this with.
Very good information Ed. Another thing that I have noticed is how smooth the Kubota loader valve operates. If you get the chance to ever run other brands that friends or neighbors own, you will see very quickly what I am talking about.
I have seen big commercial earth movers be able to tilt their loader left or right (maybe it was a Bobcat or Skidsteer instead) which seems to make it easier to scrape/level a road or path and have the "extra" material deposited to the side. Are there any accessories or "hacks" that can be done to the loader that might allow for something like that?
I'm not sure what the purpose of the hidden dump feature is, but it's good to know. My brother has a Kubota B2650 HST so I'll be sure to let him know about that. His backhoe attachment has very little power though and stalls the engine if he tries to dig or pull out shrubs. Maybe there's a "hidden" lever somewhere that will make it dig like a CAT 352F. BTW, your video was really well put together and I'm sure helped a lot of people new to small tractors. Kudos!
I love your videos. You’re like the Mr Rogers of tractors. I was waiting for you to change your shoes and put on a sweater. What video editor do you use?
@@MyClutteredGarage thank you very much. I guess I’ll have to settle for you putting on your deerskin gloves. I’m currently waiting on my L2501TLB I ordered before the new year. Meanwhile, I’ll be watching your videos.
Hey thank you for posting that video since I'm looking for tractor like Kubota it seems right for me and great teacher you are thanks bunch onthat video
This was on side of a how to I was watching. I have a Kubota and had 10 minutes so I watched. That interesting function BUT I like the review of the float function. I have used to scoop and level forward but did not think about the reverse and smooth. The visual made since.
I see your using the kubota, I am trying to decide which "brand" to purchase and everybody has their info. And reason for using what they have. I have 4 acres and will need a tractor for grading a driveway (with a crown), fencing & post holes, hauling & moving gravel, dirt etc, and a little bit of trenching. With that being said, I am open for all comments and suggestions (without a dealer "pushing" their product) to help me make a decision. I am wanting to hear the actual pros & cons from small tractor users for help...thanks in advance
Hi Linda. I like my Kubota, but I'm not brand-loyal. I tend to think that you can't really make a bad choice. It's more important to get the right sized machine for your application. I also have 4 acres, and the B2601 is a great fit. There are times I'd like something bigger, but overall its just right. I do much of the same as you, so you may want to consider the LX2601 which offers a bit more capacity and power at the PTO. For me, the Kubota was in the right price range. I also wanted to stay with a trusted name brand for resale value. Good luck with your search! Join us Mondays at 7pm Eastern time for an interactive livestream. You can ask questions in the live chat and get lots of great advice. Thanks for watching! -Ed
If you have not bought yet my advise is to drive all the brands. I borrowed my neighbor's Kubota to spread a load of shell rock on my driveway. My right leg was worn out by the time I got done from having to hold my foot up to work the foot treadle. I then bought my own John Deere 1023E. It has two pedals side by side, the inside pedal is forward and the other back. Much easier on my leg and foot. Also look for differences in like models. The JD 1025R was just a few thousand more but had features like a suspension seat and tilt steering wheel. Also a position set on the power lift instead of a simple raise or lower.
Not great info in the intended subject as I have a kioti and don’t encounter that issue, but!! Great info on the grapple and its controls, learned something today!!!
I bought a new B2601 a couple of months ago mainly to mow the yard using a 3 point finish mower. I had them take the loader off since I already have a large Case and a John Deere with loaders. The Kubota guy said that was the first one he ever sold without a loader.
Yeah my father-in-law always had 60 to 70s 50 maybe two wheel drive and loaders it was always nice to have a lot of power in the bucket because you got stuck a lot now it's not so much necessary but it is nice to have some power in the bucket
Dang, thought I was going to learn something I didn't already know and haven't been using for years. Also literally have to do that to dismount swiftach loader👍
I have a Legrand L 3450 and I have a frame mounted fron blade for smoothing dirt and plowing snow. I couldn't get it to angle to the right and that's when I found out about the detent valve. Now that I know about it I can swing my blade from side to side easily. I love my tractor and I love my blade as I can manipulate snow right where I want it. Then with 2 pins ilock the tripping part and it turns it into a solid blade for dirt. I can actually get the pot holes out of my driveway when I catch it early in the year. Otherwise my driveway gets so hard that with down pressure and front end off the ground I just scrap about 1/4 of an inch at a time. Box scraper won't break through but backhoe will. Lol.. thanks for the tip. I had to have a service call to find it out.
Thanks for the info, I’ll have to try my BX23s tomorrow. My 3rd function works a little different, on button like yours and one button, you hold the button and move the stick left or right and it closes the grapple (my favorite attachment too!) release the button and you get the curl function.
Great video tip, this will be very useful as I get more used to my new tractor. Do you have any tips for getting a full bucket, while digging in a dirt pile? I find the curl function isn’t as strong as I thought it would be.
Hi Tom. It’s always difficult, and not always beneficial, to get a full bucket but you may find this video helpful. Thanks for watching and commenting! -Ed ruclips.net/video/wFYJTZlDl-A/видео.html
First position is regenerative or "quick dump" which is where pressure is directed to both sides of the cylinders. Since the side that doesn't have the rod has more surface area it extends the cylinder. What ends up happening is the fluid from the rod end goes to the valve then to the other side of the cylinders instead of going to the tank as normal, thus extending the cylinder faster. This is so the weight of the load doesn't dump the bucket faster than the hydraulics, but isn't as strong as it would be without the quick dump. With quick dump it's only going to be as strong as a cylinder that's the diameter of the rod. The second position is the normal extend function. Not all tractors have this. My MX5200 has quick dump but not the second position, and I have no trouble lifting my tractor with the dump function.
I have a 2005 Kubota BX23 and it does not have that function per the owners manual. However, I can lift the front wheels by lowering the bucket level to the ground and then curling it downward :-)
It's called regenerative hydraulics. you have a valve block with a regen circuit, either in the spool valve or external. It allows a smaller pump to increase ram speed on extension.
Great video, I guess I didn't catch your name. This is a features that is actually on the BX as well, but like yourself and the vast majority of people it get overlooked. I found it on the BX I had by accident. So I think this is sort of a float with light pressure but to get full pressure you have to go all the way. I now have the same machine you have here the B2601 with the backhoe and truly love the machine. I makes the BX feel like a toy I hate to say. BUt it is an amazing machine and just does things so so little effort in comparison. But great video and I'll have to check out your other videos as well to see what you all have done with your machine. Thanks!! Tony!
Thanks Tony. The B2601 is a great machine. If anything, at times I wouldn’t mind something a bit bigger, but it does all I need. I’ll check out your channel too. Thanks again! -Ed
@@MyClutteredGarage Thanks for the quick Comment Ed!!! I don't get back to people as quickly like this. To many irons in the fire all the time. But ya I been a big BX guy and obviously have products for these machines but working on new stuff for the B01 machines now too! So if you have any things you can think of it needs let me know. But would be nice to chat with you over the phone one day as well.
I've known about the intermediate position on the dump function, but I never thought about using it with the bucket on the ground the way you described it. I always just thought about it as Fast Dump and Slow Dump. Because all the hydraulic functions on the loader use the same pump (I would have to go back to the manual to confirm that), you should be able to slow the grapple by combining the action with other loader functions.
Thanks for videoing how to pop the loader into float. I knew I had it but couldn’t find it. As far as R2, it’s interesting but I don’t see the point of it.
It is not a slower function the have that on the compact tractors so when loading the bucket you don't dig holes by pushing past r1 it closes the relief valve and lets more pressure into cylinders
Nope, it is always the same pressure, it just uses more area of the hydraulic cylinder. In R1 there is pressure on both sides of the piston, it moves out pretty fast because the pushing side has more surface area than the pulling side, and because the oil lines are connected, the oil which gets pushed out of the pulling side of the cylinder travels through the lines to the pushing side and makes the movement quicker. In R2 there is only pressure on the pushing side of the piston and the oil which gets pushed out of the pulling side of the cylinder gets drained into the oil reservoir, so the whole surface area of the piston is used to push, which is making it slow but powerful.
@@DeanLangley I am sure it works like this! Of course it would also be possible to do this with a flow limiter, but that would be very inefficient and you can also use the regular valve to reduce the speed by just moving the lever a little bit. It is better and easier to use the full oil flow for the slow and powerful movement and just connect the oil pressure to both ends of the cylinder to allow an extra fast movement. They do the same on high quality log splitters to move the piston very quick to the wood and then you switch to the slow and powerful "gear" to split the wood, sometimes they even switch automatically from fast to slow when they touch the wood, That can be done with a simple check valve and a pressure relief valve which is set to a pretty low pressure which is just above the pressure which is needed to move the piston without any load. Some power steerings also work with this principle, just for another reason: since these double acting cylinders always move retract faster than they push, they connect both lines for the push stroke to make it exactly as fast as the retracting stroke. Of course they need special double acting cylinders with a piston rod that has exactly half the surface area of the actual piston. Of course that is not necessary when a cylinder with rods on both sides is used...
Awesome! I have a B2601 as well, great little tractor, good to see an explanation of the loader functions. Can you please do a video on adding a level indicator? Kubota dont sell one for the B series...and I cant figure out how to do it. Cheers from Oz

@@craigdreisbach5956 Very cool! And 128 acres makes my mouth water :)
@@MyClutteredGarage Thanks
The grapple information was awesome. I knew about the float function but, my 2502 doesn't have the R2 function. Oh well. Great video.
Thank you!
Excellent presentation that showed me just how useful a grapple will be on my new Kubota. Thanks for a job well done including additional safety and user tips.
Thanks for watching. Glad it helped!
The grapple on my 03 is also my favorite attachment.
Thanks!!! My tractor didn't come with loader, but I added one. Learned something useful today. Thanks a lot.
The hidden function was helpful for me. I recall seeing that bit in the manual, but never really thought much about it.
Thanks, Nicholas. Glad it helped. Thanks for watching. -Ed
Did not know that about the dump position! Thanks! Now it'll look like I know what I'm doing!
Well done...a good video. I just traded in my 2005 BX2230 for an LX3310...can't wait to pick it up!
Thank you. And congrats on the LX3310!
@@MyClutteredGarage Thanks! I just found your channel and find it very enjoyable...just finished watching the LED light installation.
Thank you, Dave. That's the great thing about youtube. You can find almost anything you need. Thanks for watching! -Ed
Thanks for this tip. I have a Kubota BX23s and also getting a B2601 this week so this tip will be very helpful. Thanks again, love your videos, keep up the good work.
Brent Conway - much appreciated. Congrats on the B2601!
Thanks for that info I have a kubota b 2650 that I bought new 6 years ago and did not know about that function until your video bye the way this is the third kubota tractor I’ve owned and I would never buy anything else
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching. Love my Kubota too!
Thanks very much.
I use it as you've shown for an approximate bucket level indicator. Fine tuning sometimes required. (4in1 combination bucket. For dozer blade pitch but mainly pinch pulling brush, roots, picking rocks, trees or whatever primary adjustment).
Great channel! Great content!
Keep it up. 👍
Rand Thompson - very nice! Thanks for watching, and for your kind comments.
just got new iseki with front loader grab and forks.so picking up bits from you Japanese same as yours main two producers in japan i think, one of the few country's in the world that still know what quality means.
Had my BX23s for a few days now and was having trouble back dragging. No clue about the float feature....time to read the manual.......Thank You.
You’ll be a pro in no time! Thanks for watching. -Ed
I had seen that function in my manual, but did not see a need for it. Thanks!
I agree, can't think what you would do with it
Great tip. My 480 John Deere compact tractor has that feature as well. Another cool use for this is lifting the front end to work on front tires and or spindles.
Good to know, Fred. I've wondered if that's a universal function, or Kubota specific.
Huh, I started watching thinking “what could he possibly teach me about a tractor loader that I don’t already know” well, I was completely wrong. I never knew that was there and am glad to have that stashed away in my bag of tricks now. Great video sir!
Thanks very much!
Huh. I have this tractor and I had no idea that R2 feature existed. Interesting. Thanks!
Interesting, I'll have to check the controls on my JD 1025R.
Hey stop stop back and let me know! Thanks much. -Ed
I really like your videos they have been a big help to me as this is the little tractor that I have and so far just love!
Thank you! I appreciate your feedback. Thanks for watching!
Nice video and great information Ed! I'll have to check mine for that feature AS SOON AS i REBUILD A PISTON LOL!
Uh oh!
You have that Mr. Rogers quality about you. Very easy to listen to and you could tell me the Earth was flat and i'd believe you. I have an old Kubota L3300 i'll have to try this with.
That’s very kind and much appreciated. By the way, the earth is definitely not flat 😄
Thank you my friend,
It is a good day when I learn something. I am continuously amazed at how much the B2601 can do.
Take care,
Ben from Nova Scotia
You and me both! Great to hear from you. Thank you. -Ed
Very good information Ed. Another thing that I have noticed is how smooth the Kubota loader valve operates. If you get the chance to ever run other brands that friends or neighbors own, you will see very quickly what I am talking about.
Thanks for the tip! I've heard that said before and I'd definitely like to opportunity to compare!
Your best bet would be a rear scraper blade for your 3 point hitch. You can angle and tilt the blade. Thanks for reaching out! -Ed
Kudos!
Thank you very much!
I love your videos. You’re like the Mr Rogers of tractors. I was waiting for you to change your shoes and put on a sweater. What video editor do you use?
Haha, thanks so much. You’re not the first to make that comparison. I have been editing with Final Cut Pro since 1999.
@@MyClutteredGarage thank you very much. I guess I’ll have to settle for you putting on your deerskin gloves. I’m currently waiting on my L2501TLB I ordered before the new year. Meanwhile, I’ll be watching your videos.
Nice front grill guard. Good info, thanks
Thank you!
Have the same tractor, the second detent is needed to turn the chute on the snow blower to the right, it won't turn with the first detent.
Hey thank you for posting that video since I'm looking for tractor like Kubota it seems right for me and great teacher you are thanks bunch onthat video
Thank you. Good luck, be safe, and enjoy!
grappler is my favorite attachment. Great video
Thanks very much!
This was on side of a how to I was watching. I have a Kubota and had 10 minutes so I watched. That interesting function BUT I like the review of the float function. I have used to scoop and level forward but did not think about the reverse and smooth. The visual made since.
Thanks for watching and for your kind comments.
Thanks for watching!
I bought a new B2601 a couple of months ago mainly to mow the yard using a 3 point finish mower. I had them take the loader off since I already have a large Case and a John Deere with loaders. The Kubota guy said that was the first one he ever sold without a loader.
I love my 3 pt mower.
If you back under to trim, replace the snap pins w cotter keys.
Trust me 😉
@@randthompson5716 I read that same tip somewhere when I was researching what mower I wanted so that was the first thing I did when I got the mower.
Yeah my father-in-law always had 60 to 70s 50 maybe two wheel drive and loaders it was always nice to have a lot of power in the bucket because you got stuck a lot now it's not so much necessary but it is nice to have some power in the bucket
I just bought one of these. Thanks for the amazing tips!
Congratulations and thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching. Glad it helped!
Very cool feature! Thank you for sharing
That's was great. Very helpful getting ready to purchase a Kub 2301.
Thank you, Gary. Congrats!
If you have a kubota backhoe, when you pull back on both controllers at once it draws straight back evenly.
Thanks for the info, I’ll have to try my BX23s tomorrow. My 3rd function works a little different, on button like yours and one button, you hold the button and move the stick left or right and it closes the grapple (my favorite attachment too!) release the button and you get the curl function.
How do you like your 23s? Thinking on getting one. Order now 2 to 3 months out.
@@rodbagley1686 love my BX23s, it works great for the property I have. No issues at all, just over 200 hours.
@@ddsharpening keep looking at the pamphlets. None around to see first hand.
my bx23s will lift the front end all day......i dont believe there is a second position for the bucket roll....wierd
-Ed

I'm always learning with my b2650 , now another nugget of knowledge. Cheers
There's always more to learn, right? Thanks for watching!
Thanks Tom. That's a great explanation. Much appreciated. -Ed
Not sure your year, mine is 2017 or 18, i will check mine tonight.
HELLO from chihuahua mexico, thank you for the video, is going to be helpful, by the time I buy my tractor 👍😃👍, GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
juantransportador - hope you get one soon! Thank you.
Thank you 👍😃👍
Does it work like that with the boom cylinders to give you more lift?
I've known about the intermediate position on the dump function, but I never thought about using it with the bucket on the ground the way you described it. I always just thought about it as Fast Dump and Slow Dump. Because all the hydraulic functions on the loader use the same pump (I would have to go back to the manual to confirm that), you should be able to slow the grapple by combining the action with other loader functions.
You do a great job clearly explaining the features of the loader operation. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Thanks so very much. Happy Holidays to you and yours!
Glad I got the MX4500, although a smaller unit like that would be fun to play with for small work.
Loven my MX5200 too.
Awesome! I have a B2601 as well, great little tractor, good to see an explanation of the loader functions.
Can you please do a video on adding a level indicator? Kubota dont sell one for the B series...and I cant figure out how to do it.
Cheers from Oz
