I’ve always wondered why so many people thought Jeter was an amazing SS. I always felt like he made pretty normal plays look really hard. Guys like Brandon Crawford and Andrelton Simmons make the same play look easy.
Prime Andrelton may just be the second best defensive ss I’ve ever seen…#1 being Ozzie Smith. The only one I’m not sure about is Omar vizquel who was ridiculous
Talking as a Yankee fan here, I never thought Jeter was an amazing shortstop, I did however feel that he was solid, worst fielding position player ever (according to the stats) is crazy to me, was he Ozzie Smith no, but I don’t think rational Yankee fans would say that
I played ball through the early to mid 90’s. All coaches taught the same break in practice and going back I realize how much it actually wasn’t very good at all. Having said that my Cooper Black Diamond was still a better quality glove than most little leaguers gloves today.
I actually always curled my thumb inward. I ran an 11" mizuno pro legacy into college and bc it was a smaller glove, I found it kept those really high spin rockets in the glove much better. I was never concerned about "closing the window" of my glove bc if I took one off the thumb regardless, I wasn't reading it correctly at all. I definitely preferred the way in which it kept balls in the glove and closed up the top of the web to keep those high spin short hops in. Not saying my way is better, but it just worked for me and my style glove
as a man who grew up watching Jeter play . He's defense was NEVER called in question. He was above average defender. NOT a liability and his bat was always there. legendary bat . glove is ugly but he had an arm cannon. remember that jump JORDAN throw. idk he was a really good player
Can you please do Yadier Molinas glove? He uses a heart of the hide. Has 9 gold gloves, 2 time World Series Champion, and won the Roberto Clemente award. Has the least passed balls per inning. Caught more than 2000 innings. And is not far behind first for the most put outs at over 14,000.
I’m not defending this glove, but… I don’t understand why a soft glove is so frowned upon. Yes, a lot of middle infielders are taught to not fully close the glove for a better transfer, but a lot of ball players really know how to work with a glove that swallows the ball; and actually prefer “soft” to feel the ball. And the basket web thing seems like a fashion faux pas more than a functional problem. Middle infielders have told me that the I web allows more give and the ball gets deeper, but say they hate deep pockets in the same breath. I’d imagine that if there was someone influential enough to set the trend, then people would do anything
I never seaid the pocket makes the glove worse, I belive the break in process is way way more important than the web you choose. Like Japanese baseball culture does not care for using specific webs for specific positions. It's all about using what you like or what looks cool. So I agree with you there, its mostly a style thing. When it comes to soft leather there are two things to note 1. For pros or anyone playing as often as pros, the leather needs to be durable enough to last at least one season. So like you said with infielders they often need something a little stiffer whereas outifelders can get away with a looser/softer glove. Tha's why steerhide is nice. It is typically softer but that gets to my second point 2. For softer leather to still be high quality and usable for elite baseball it needs to be thicker. So everyone is different but you could argue that thin harder leather like kip lets you feel the ball more. Every glove is different and the depth of the pocket plays a huge part in how much you can feel the ball I love talking about this stuff lol sorry, thanks for the comment!
Pretty cool idea for future videos. A lot of players break in and use their glove differently from traditional to 2-3 pinky. It would be dope to hear about some out of the ordinary styles. Either way dope videos.
I have a similar Rawlings glove but I pitch and play third. It is a super soft leather and makes it difficult to field since it flops out of my glove sometimes. The pocket is deep but I don’t hate that feel since I pitch but it is tough playing third with it.
@@ballgloveking any recommendations on the type of leather and glove I should use. I know the basket webbing might be unpopular but I am used to the feel and look. Just wondering how I should build a custom glove that will last for both positions and won’t be a soft leather

I played against Jeter in 1994 when he was with Yankees and I was with Rangers....Don't care what this guy says....he was a class act on and off the field
Never said anything bad about his character, I’m a Jeter fan! His fielding itself wasn’t anything to write home about, that was the point. I see a lot of guys look up to Jeter (which is good) but they shouldn’t follow every step haha. Just wanna make sure everyone is well informed on how to break in there gloves best
Jeter's transfer and actually catching the ball were NEVER his problem he had a bad first step and had less range because of it other than that his fielding was amazing.
My recommendation is that you use a stiff and shallow glove for SS and 2B. It will improve your hands and it will allow you to make the quickest possible transfers
I could understand that theory on basic plays. But if you ever have to dive for a ball.. go backhand on an out-of-reach ball.. go way beyond a routine hit.. a stiff glove is worthless. No infielder in the MLB uses a stiff glove for this reason. The part of the glove where your hand uses the glove, should be soft to get a better feel for the ball. Almost like a second skin. The shallow part I agree on 💯
i wore my first softball mitt in like this and didnt hate it, but prefered flaring the fingers. it does make snowcone catches easier but for infield that isnt a great concern
Had no clue it was that small. Worked for him though. Him and Ozzie smith are my two favorite defensive SS’s in the last 40 years. Both wizards in the hole.
I think you’d find that a lot of infielders during Jeters prime era broke their glove in similarly and very few put two in the pinky slot. The flare for infielders is “relatively new” so not sure it’s fair to call out him out specifically for his form as if he was the only one curling fingers and not flaring his thumb.
I agree that the first half of his career that’s true The second half is when it was becoming normal to care more for the shape and break in. It seems like he didn’t care to try anything new which is pretty common actually. People don’t like leaving what’s familiar
Very true early on I would roll the pinky and thumb in on my glove for a more rounded opening for the glove. Now I slightly flare the tip of the thumb and pinky for a wider opening and I always gone traditional I like to know I'm feeling the ball
I actually have the Jeter glove and the pocket is very shallow. It only becomes deep when you shape it so it folds "thumb to pinky".. which is what most modern players seem to do. But the way Jeter wears it, he folds "thumb to index finger". That way its much shallower and easier to transfer. However, I do agree about the glove being too soft/floppy.
I like that you all think some guy who does baseball glove youtube videos is an authority on anything. Lol. I'll agree Jeter was never the best fielding shortstop in the game but his issue wasn't recieving the ball or the transfer it was range. If anyone thinks changing gloves is gonna make a major difference in a mlb players game, I'm gonna tell you you don't know what you are talking about. These guys could play with the cheapest glove at walmart and make most all plays look effortless

On the play where A-Rod and Jeter dropped the ball that was A-Rod's ball. The Third Basemen can call off the shortstop simply because it's an easier route. But still it doesn't matter who catches as long as they catch and make an out. They should have been talking

Derek Jeter wasn't blessed enough to play during the crazy shift era. All the young guys don't have to range to their left or right. They're positioned so the ball is hit directly to them.
Every GM in the league has stated that their first pick in an all-time MLB draft would be Derek Jeter. He’s not only a perennial gold glover, he’s the most clutch player in history on both sides of the ball. Some of the greatest defensive plays in post season history. Not only is Jeter a gold glover, he’s one of the greatest defensive minded players in league history. That’s why he wins the award.

That’s new HotH gloves with the pre oiled bs. Back then they didn’t come that broken in. I broke in many a HotH in early 2000s and they were stiffer than pro preferred.
Derek Jeter is the worst defensive shortstop in MLB history and it’s a crime that he won any gold gloves. Still a HOFer tho
Do George Springer
I’m sick bc I play 3rd and like my glove like this 💀
Yes bro I was going to say that
Would you be open to selling this one?
The music is up so loud in the mix I can barely hear you talk :-\
Also no wonder he’s bad his glove is bad (glove bad =skill bad)
Sorta true
You’re probably not knowing if you caught the ball because you have the batting glove on
I have his glove and play shortstop and RF
RIP
jk I’m sure it’s working great
Thanks but your right I’m ten and now use gg elite glove
The Yankees had the best shortstop in the game. The problem was he was playing third base.
