4:38 that web is called a "Modified Single Post". Essentially a Modified Single Post web is an H-web that has a sleeve over it to look like a single post. It pulls the H-web pieces together tightly at the top and bottom while also being wider in the middle making it very very durable. This is the only "single" post web I would ever use.
I got my 10 year old son an a2000 for Christmas. Custom Pedroia fit 11 1/4. I’ve done a LOT of work breaking it in, using your advice. He’s using it 2 in the pinky. It has a great pocket. He can complete close it. Sounds great playing catch. I would say the downside is that it can be tougher for him to field slow rollers and back handers if the ball isn’t coming as hard. Soft kid gloves are like butterfly nets. It takes a little more to get the ball to stick in the a2000. You have to have better technique to come through the ball, or be ready to bare hand a ball that’s maybe a little fast for 10u to barehand. He still prefers it to his old glove, but some balls might be easier caught with a floppy glove. The decision becomes, how much life do you actually want to take out of the glove breaking it in so a younger kid can use it effectively. That said, I think it’ll be perfect the next few years as balls are hit harder, and it inevitably continues to break in. Hope this helps.
Any chance you can do some fast pitch softball gloves? I get it if you don’t think you have the audience that’ll watch, but a lot of dads out there with daughters that play softball.
Great process! Though, I would say that submerging gloves is a bit heavy-handed. I recommend using hotter tap water, but pour the water over all the outer surfaces of the glove with a ladle or measuring cup. That prevents water from getting into the inside and finger wells where it isn't needed. Submerging also soaks the entire glove, lengthening the drying process. The pour-over, then mallet work can be repeated as needed without making the glove too wet. It could be play-ready quicker.
Do you have a video somewhere on what kinda glove to get for a youth softball player? My daughter is turning 8 and she needs a better glove. Love the content, funny and knowledgeable! Keep up the great work.
Yeah I just ordered a custom heart of hide baby blue $440 glove for my 8u son and this thing is ridiculously stiff. I have had it steamed at dicks, used glove oil, beat the hell out of it etc. he is just now where he can maybe catch the ball here and there. I guess this real leather makes a huge difference. The guy at Rawlings when I ordered said it would be more difficult and for youth players said maybe not to go with heart of hide but my son wanted a certain color so here we are. And of course he won’t do two in the pinky which I think would allow him to close the glove better
Love your videos. I'd love to see you do a break in for an Akadema catcher's mitt and review. There are no reviews out there on them and I'd like to hear your take on the interesting style.
On gloves, youth or otherwise, after the break in, how should they be transported and stored? Some say with a ball in them and wrapped with a band, some say open and never in a bag resting palm down…..what’s your take
I bought my 10 year old an A2000 DP15. Wouldn’t normally spend that kind of money at this age but: I got it on sale for $200 USD, which is only $80 more than the Rawlings R9 he used last season that lasted 1 year before laces broke. I’m sure the A2000 will last for several years.
What kind of glove wrap or glove save system do you recommend. Kids glove stuffed in baseball bag, what can we do best to keep its shape. Just ball in pocket and band?
So I’ve never been a huge fan of the glove care systems. Honestly one I do like is the glove clip. Like holding the glove on the outside of the bag. AZ GloveLab has one if you wanna check it out
Can u break in a SSK outfield z7 glove because I need to break of in and it has soooooo much leather and I can’t break it in so can u pls do it I love watching your videos.
Thanks for pointing out to not put adult hands in the kids glove. I'm totally guilting when trying to break in my daughter's gloves. She just got a 11.25" Resilient softball glove for her 8th birthday. They have a ratcheting wrist enclosure that I thought would help her have the glove fit her smaller hand better. They are a small company that specializes in girls softball gloves, which I was more than happy to support. My daughter had a 10.5" Rawlings Highlight t-ball she used in the fall season and a 11" Mizuno Finch she used in the spring that I got on ebay for $15. Her first glove was fine after her first season but I felt there was something better out there. It was a huge improvement going from the Rawlings to the Mizuno because the Mizuno was much lighter, has a more snug fit on her wrist because of the Velcro strap, and easier for her to close but it's super thin and looks like a nerf glove on her hand. The Resilient glove is like a huge leap in quality compared to her two other gloves but it's like going from a tricycle to a Dodge Hellcat. Anyways, it would be cool if you checked out Resilient gloves.
Hey just a question what are you breaking you glove in on, because I can’t find a surface to hit it on. Oh and what glove conditioner do you recommend?
You're videos have been super helpful (and entertaining)! Much appreciated! I never played baseball growing up and have used your videos to learn about gloves for my two kids, myself, and even for softball recently! (I dove headfirst into baseball, haha!) I also got the glove cleaner/ conditioner you recommended and I'm working on restoring my father's old glove. Super excited! I'm 0-2 on ordering good quality baseball laces (poor quality, inconsistent thickness). Do you have any glove laces you recommend?

I tried your process and it definitely helped. After it dried, there are still some areas that make it to stiff to close. Would you drunk it in water again, or just keep using the mallet? Thanks.
Hey Ball Glove King. I recently got this wilson a2000 m23 33.5 catchers mitt. I have been working on hinges and forming the pocket. I used a 5 pound weight and broke in the hinges of the glove. I noticed there was a lot of wrinkling around the area it hinges and I was wondering if that was okay.
