Parallel parking was something I used to fear when studying for the driver's test. My dad had his own technique for teaching me by taking me to an empty parking lot and using the parking spaces to guide me in what to do. That also not made me fear parallel parking and that was one of the things I did well on the test. I knew I had to master it because where I live, parallel parking is the FIRST thing they test you on. In the end, I got my license and parallel parking is no big thing for me.
My dad literally drove me to one of the most crowded cities in the state and made me parallel park and drive him around for 8 hrs. After that almost nothing phased me. Before that, his favorite words were "look what a perfect opportunity to parallell park." everywhere we went in our small town. My mom laughed at me when I started giving her the teenage "ugh". My mom has some issues with parking but she can back a trailer so it's not lack of skill but usually impatience.
This is why I genuinely believe that everyone should have basic knowledge of how cars work. Not only does it allow you to do your own maintenance, but it also gives you a basic understanding of how a car is going to handle.

If you don't have a driver's license in the US and Canada it can be nearly impossible to survive outside a city. Nearest grocery store may be 5 miles away and there is no bus.
The whole trailer "turn right to go left" thing is... I hate telling people that. You're pushing the front of the trailer with the back of your vehicle. So imagine you're pushing an eraser across a paper with a pencil, right? Who's never done that. Which way do you have to push the eraser, initially, to get it off-center, and be able to push it in a circle? That's what you're doing with you car. You're turning to put angle into, or out of, your articulation, the angle between car and trailer, and then your center reference changes from there. Straight is no longer straight when reversing. You're now backing up, basically in a partial circle, and so the same as driving forward with your wheel turned part way, your trailer is going to stay at that angle behind you, the same in reverse. It's just, rather than leading the trailer, you now have to push it where you want it to go, and correct for its deviations.

Lol Europe here if you fail your license test 3 times you have to go to medical and psychological assessment to see if your fit to drive. Non of them were on the road here (you have to be able to drive manual too btw)

There are few gripes about this. Like reverse only once for parallel parking to Canada's worst drive is such a high bar - even I, who considers himself to be a confident parallel parker, would struggle to do that in one motion (usually 2/10 parking is done like that). I feel bad for Alexis in the parking lot test. That Cadilac is so humungusly long, I wouldn't even have the confidence to turn in Toronto short downtown roads. So thats also such a high bar for someone so worse.

@@Karma0917 You'd be surprised. When I took my test while yes it was more thorough then I'm hearing here I didn't have to parallel park at all due to it being winter and the area I took it. Plus you can try as many times as you want on top of just lazy testers or ones that are overbooked so they rush it through

@@Karma0917 No, they're genuine. I share a city with one of them and we've seen enough of their off-camera driving to confirm that people can be this bad. The problem lies with whoever evaluated them 90% of the time.

Lol Europe here if you fail your license test 3 times you have to go to medical and psychological assessment to see if your fit to drive. Non of them were on the road here (you have to be able to drive manual too btw)

There are few gripes about this. Like reverse only once for parallel parking to Canada's worst drive is such a high bar - even I, who considers himself to be a confident parallel parker, would struggle to do that in one motion (usually 2/10 parking is done like that).
I feel bad for Alexis in the parking lot test. That Cadilac is so humungusly long, I wouldn't even have the confidence to turn in Toronto short downtown roads. So thats also such a high bar for someone so worse.
