Yeah, Gratianus armor and garments are quite similar to the ones of Roman generals and Emperors back to the time the early Roman Empire, about 1000 years before the start of this story. Also Welsh ships are depicted quite similar to Roman triremes. The basic idea here is that Wales, or at least some of its kingdoms, would have represented the last remnant of Romano-Celtic culture in Great Britain, more than 500 years after the time the Roman Empire abandoned Britannia to the invading armies of the Angles and Saxons from modern Germany and Denmark, and the Irish people (also named Scoti) and the Picts from the north.
The real real real show about to begin !!! I can't wait .
Ok, about the history of Wales and the saxons and all that stuff.
Basically, the British Isles in antiquity had a celtic population with strong ties to the mainland and the same culture of druidic councils and worshipping the elements and natural phenomenon.
Then in 1st century AD the Romans have reached the islands and taken control of the part we know today as England and Wales, established their institutions and administration and so on. What we today consider Scotland was seen as a wild and inhospitable land of barbarian picts, and the Roman armies never got to Ireland.
Then, when the Roman Empire had to abandon Brittania in 5th century, the imperial institutions stayed in place for some time, but during the period of Migration the anglo-saxons have started settling on the isles in large numbers, sometimes fighting with the local population and other times peacefully assimilating with it. Due to the geographical location, the Wales and North England/south Scotland were affected by the migration the least and largely preserved the celto-romanic, or gaelic, culture. Therefore while they wouldn't, of cause, be wearing roman red capes and breastplates and usung triremes unfit for the harsh waters of North Atlantic, they might have preserved some of the Roman influence.
I actually love how the history of British Isles is presented in the show, along with religious struggle between Christianity and the heathen vikings. For something that far removed from your own culture and religious concept, the mangaka did a great job incorporating all that things into a story.
I know they sing the ED (ending theme) every time but I can't wait for the 2nd one, one of my fav songs from any anime.
the visuals are crazy good too
fuck yea, i love the suspicious and epic music that plays when gratonius shows up in the mist. this show's got a cinematic ost
