Mark is in good shape in his 70's. Here we have a man who went stadium size with his band and walked away. Didn't develop a drug problem, never went to rehab, doesn't complain about the toughness of showbusiness. Just loving doing what he does. And I love listening to him.

      Good things about fame?
How about practically limitless income, never having to worry about jobs, the economy, credentials, bosses, bills, debt, grinding away your life for a trivial amount of money, and all that other bullshit that comes with being a conventional working stiff?
Look, I've always loved Dire Straits, they're a band I can enjoy even though I've listened to their tunes a zillion and one times since I was very little. When I've really overloaded on them and can't listen anymore for a while, I can enjoy just contemplating the existence of their music, without having to listen to it!
But come on, there's nothing NOT good about being rich and famous. The two go together, and as someone who's had to get jobs and work for a living, nothing pisses me off quite like people complaining about it!

Mark, like many musicians know that there is an enormous pool of musical talent present on a global scale. It's not just humility. It's being honest and realistic. Many of the "pop" and "rock and roll" musical stars that have sold a lot of records through popular bands or in the solo area, are often placed on an unrealistic and over elevated platform. They understand this because they are aware of the musical talent out there that is almost totally unknown to the public.
Having said that, I have seen Mark Knopfler many times over the past decades - in Dire Straits and also playing solo.
(there is a great story of Mark sending a demo tape of Dire Straits songs to Paul McCartney and being rejected)

The best part is that the music industry at the time was all like "mine mine mine mine mine mine mine" each time Mark came with anything new he had just written. Literally they would take anything he'd give from his hands the second they had a chance...
for him "I was just sending stuff around", as if he was having trouble finding anyone who'd take his work. Yeah, right, Mark. Damn right you were, lol.

Mason should stick to interviewing elementary school teachers from Alabama. Try as he did to get Knopfler to come across as an arrogant rock legend, Mark is a completely natural chap, who just loves his music - and loves to play it for simple folks who love to listen to it.

Love Mark, love Dire Straits. I have since I was about 3 years old. Just saw him on the Down the Road Wherever tour on the 22nd of September. That was my first concert and I can’t think of anyone else I’d rather have seen for my first concert. My dad was supposed to go with me because he’s as big a Knopfler fan as I am, but he got sick and couldn’t go. I ended up taking a friend who knew nothing about Mark Knopfler, aside from when they played “Money for Nothing” as an encore. But it ended up working out really well and she became a fan after that single show. Mark’s just always been a great musician and a great guy. Rock on

I really need to see Mark soon. I missed a chance to see him many years ago to with Chet Atkins (yes, Chet Atkins) at Café Milano in Nashville in the nineties. I knew Chet would be there, but according to my friends there, this "other" guy stepped in and Chet only said hello to my friend Mark. They raved about the collaboration. One of my great regrets in life.

You are correct, saw him in Minneapolis in August and it was night and day from how he played in the same venue 4 years prior. I left the show saddened by his decline in abilities. Mind you it was still amazing it it was obvious that at his age he can longer play like he used to. When he finally dies, for me there’s no more music. I think he’s the best musician certainly that I’ve ever heard in my lifetime. You just can’t compare him to anyone or anything else, he’s in a class that no one else has been able to reach.

I will always love Mark Knopfler he's a massive inspiration to guitarist the world over from his early days and Way into the future a legendary unique guitarist song writer it's so amazing all his amazing catchy memorable songs with riffs all plucked from his everyday life and his ideas stitched together let's us paint a pic in our minds of the scenes set by his imaginational musical ultra talent whilst his thumb rocks the way and says ney to the singing nun as his four beats to the bar spans across every tune he's ever done

Good example is,”When You Leave.”Tom Walsh is on trumpet 🎺 and does an amazing job. Of course, Mark Knopfler’s guitar playing goes without saying, just as brilliant as he ever has been.We highly recommend it.🎧
