Debussy: The Complete Preludes (Jumppanen)

- One of the great peaks of the prelude literature for piano, alongside Chopin’s, Rachmaninoff’s and Scriabin’s (late) prelude sets. These works are consistently ingenious in the deployment of those devices that are now consistently associated with impressionism - modal colour, exotic scales (whole-tone, pentatonic, double harmonic, Hungarian), non-functional harmony (planing chords, purely colouristic intervals, hanging and extended chords), pedal points, timbral figuration. Interestingly, Book 2 is very different from Book 1: it’s far more pessimistic and abstract, so much so that it was greeted upon publication with some disappointment. Book 1’s fantasy has been replaced by a certain weary or ominous realism, and you get the feeling that Book 1 was more explicitly imagistic in nature, while Book 2 is symbolic - it’s going for what certain images and objects *mean*, rather than trying to depict them per se. Book 2 is also completely written on 3 staves - its sound is a bit more expansive and less propulsive, more delicately tiered.
Book 1
1: Dancers of Delphi - A languorous melody embedded in a chordal texture.
2: Sails/Veils - Whole-tone scale, then the pentatonic, then whole-tone scales again. Sailing-boats stuck to a pedal-point
3: The wind in the plain - A displaced trill trembling like grass on a plain. Flashes of lightning in the middle.
4: "The sounds and fragrances swirl through the evening air" - Harmonically rich, disfigured waltz
5: The hills of Anacapri - Luminous bells introduce an ecstatic tarantella
6: Footsteps in the snow - Possibly the bleakest soundscape in the preludes. Trudging footsteps form an ostinato in the LH. Ends in emptiness.
7: What the West Wind has seen - The frozen landscape descends into a maelstrom.
8: The girl with the flaxen hair - The most tonal prelude, recalling Debussy’s early style.
9: Interrupted serenade - A guitarist tries to serenade a potential lover, but is interrupted.
10: The submerged cathedral - First, bells stifled by the depths of the sea (given mixolydian, lydian, and then phrygian colour); as the cathedral begins to rise, full chiming bells, a sustained plainchant, then a booming organ pedal-point.
11: Puck’s dance - The mischief-maker from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. A loose gigue (in sonata form?) stuck through with dorian colour.
12: Minstrels - Banjo imitations interrupted by surprisingly blatant dominant-tonic pedals in G. A warmly sentimental lyric is introduced, as well as a drum-like theme.
Book 2
1: Mists - Fleeting shadows in the RH over a mystic, stunned chorale in the LH. The second theme is played in octaves separated by a desolate gulf in the middle of the keyboard.
2: Dead leaves - Dejected, inbent.
3: Wine door - Inspired a postcard Debussy received from De Falla of a Moorish wine-gate in Grenada. A playful evocation of an archaic habanera, underlaid with supressed violence.
4: The fairies are exquisite dancers - A fluttering dance alternatives with lyric passages.
5: Bruyères - Pastoral, with improvisatory figures that mimic birdcalls. Nostalgic and a bit lonely.
6: General Lavine - eccentric - Alternately comic and sentimental, crude and refined.
7: The terraces of moonlit audiences - Aching, rapt. Possibly inspired by a newspaper article about the coronation of George V as King of India, which concluded with the words: “…the audience was observing the events in a shimmering moonlight.”
8: Ondine - Ravel’s water nymph was hushed and candescent; Debussy’s is evasive, even, at points, slightly threatening.
9: Homage to S. Pickwick - Opening with a forceful but absurd parody of ‘God Save the Queen’, this prelude presents a sequence of contrasting musical styles, all linked only by their humour. Debussy was, for reasons only he will know, awfully fond of the British (see the little jig tune that the character whistles at 1:14:43 while walking into the distance).
10: Canopic jar - Debussy’s desk was occupied by two Egyptian canopic jars: this prelude is a meditation on death, but death held at a great distance, still and somehow hermetic. Even the sudden tonal shift in the fourth bar sounds inevitable, and the recurrent chromatic phrase centred on C# has the character of an incantation.
11: Alternating thirds - An etude, bone-dry.
12: Fireworks - A dazzle through which a deformed recollection of the Marsellaise is heard. Virtuosic and brilliant, but in a brutal way, like light too bright to look at directly.

Jumppanen approaches these preludes armed with preternaturally fine dynamic control, a keen sense of shape & structure, and wonderful imagination (when the score says “caressingly”, you hear it, and Jumppanen is one of those who actually separates his mezzo-pianos, pianos, and pianissimos). The tempi in the slower preludes can get really very slow, but these are in service of colours that appear to stop time. And the characterisation you get in many of these is just perfect - the grand prismatic architecture of the ‘Submerged Cathedral’, the wry & slightly weird menace of ‘Wine Door’, the sparks of ‘Fireworks’, one moment festive & balmy, and the next mesmeric and dangerously close, so that you almost feel in danger of getting burnt. There are many great recordings of the preludes out there, but few are as haunting as this one.

Didn't you upload Zimerman's take on the Preludes? Has it been deleted?
I was about to ask your opinion on your preference between Zimerman's and Jumppanen's because they are both superb recordings in their own merits (although I say this with the knowledge that Zimerman's recordings have been negatively viewed by some to be too harsh and the like)

Its a very beautiful and imaginative piece, I was at a live concert and i felt so immersed. If its your first time listening these preludes you should close your eyes and think of the music and compare your interpretations to Debussy's as the preludes title is purposely in the end so you dont immediately know what Debussy's ment and instead figure it out by the harmony and the specifically placed notes.
I am so intrigued by this collection. It slowly reveals itself over multiple listens.
Such a lovely sound. I do love the rich deep sounds when you hear notes from the bottom octave on the piano -which is one reason I like Debussy's music. He tends to make use of the full length of the 88-note keyboard. One reason I lost interest in learning piano for a few years as a child was Dad's stupidity in getting a 73-note mini piano. Only after he died when I was 14 and I got my own proper piano did I start to go back to it again.

@@felixmladenov5428 I'm not a fan of his interpretation. Sounds too aggressive, curt, and dry at certain moments, especially in Les collines d'anacapri.
@@toothlesstoe I never thaught about that but after comparing some of the preludes with your words in mind (especially les collines) I was really shocked. The only one where I like Zimerman's sharp version more is La Danse de Puck. I will have to choose one of both recordings of the preludes for my personal hall of fame but I already am also really positively surprised by this pianist's understanding and already can identity with this interpretation pretty good.

Interesting to hear these from a (relatively) unknown pianist, thanks for shedding light on some deserving musicians! That being said, it would be great to compare this interesting interpretation with one of the more "established" recordings, such as the complete set by Paul Jacobs, Krystian Zimerman, or Stephen Osbourn. In any case...this music never gets old or repetitive to hear!

Something interesting about the two most lyrical preludes, The Girl With the Flaxen Hair and Bruyeres, the structures of the two pieces are quite similar. Both land on the IV chord and we hear the melody repeated in a higher octave toward the ends of both pieces.

I love how poetic Debussy's directions are: "with the sound of distant horns" at the end of Sons et Parfums, "sounding like a melancholy, frozen landscape" in Des Pas Sur la Neige, "with profound calm, in a gently resounding mist" in La Cathedrale. These are some of my favorite pieces ever written, and Jumppanen plays them very well. I first heard Gieseking's recording of these, and Gieseking plays them far too quickly. I like the slower tempos, like in Collines, which allows you to really hear the notes of the song in it.

How can you call Les tierces alternées a "bone dry etude"? The third is one of the more vibrant intervals, and the shading Debussy produces with it in that prelude is truly dazzling.

Great version! But i think that Juppanen's interpretation is quite more rough and less sweet and charming than others. Many sweets and charming parts of this preludes (f.e. the tender motive of "La Sérénade interrompue") are played on a harshly way, and rougher parts like the West wind are played way to slow, and delicate, when if it's the wind, it must be savage and "détaché". The Cathédrale Engloutie is played slow and soft when it must be the Cathédrale going gloriously up and it's played fast and unpassioned when the climax-organ part comes in. Bruyères is played as well more improvisatory than deep. I think that each of these preludes are philosophical reflexions, and have to be played like this, deep, philosophical, humoristic sometimes and cautiously, elements that i didn't heard in Juppanen's interpretation. Anyways, when I saw the notification I remembered that Ashish uploaded Zimmerman's version as well. So, anyone knows what happened with Zimmerman's preludes video? :( I couldn't find it anywhere.
I agree w you this composer didn't fully intimate w the compositions. Also the footsteps in the snow he played too fast during most of the piece. He didn't really get the 'triplet within the triplet' in the motif for every half note. At the speed of his first triplet he plays he should be enlongating the rest of the half note much more.

'9: Interrupted serenade - A guitarist tries to serenade a potential lover, but is interrupted.' Really? Come on! "La serenade interrompue" is a clear hommage to the great Isaac Albéniz! If you listen to "El Albaicín" and then this prelude you will be able to notice Albéniz's influence on Debussy (at least on this piece and La Soriée dans Grenade). Anyway, great video descriptions: I really like these music channels :D
My ears are telling me there are misread accidentals in bar 29-30 of Feuilles mortes. I think he's playing D#'s instead of Es in the second chord in each group - should be B#-E-G natural-B#. Perhaps also in the preceding bars. Can someone check?!
My score for La Cathedrale has only the contra-C for the big tolling bell-sound during the climax, not a C octave. I wonder which is correct? I've heard both (with just the lowest C and with octaves) in various recordings.

Interestingly enough, the doubled bass line at 1:12:46 sounds like god save the queen.
it's a direct quotation of god save the queen. Prelude #9 is titled "Hommage à S. Pickwick Esq. P.P.M.P.C" referencing the titular character of Charles Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers so Debussy is bringing in a bunch of "English" associations and vibes

Whats the easiest prelude ???? ( mu english is too Bad)
Des Pas sur la Neige, and La Fille aux Cheveux de lin are the easiest, although Des Pas requires very good tonal control to sound interesting. La Fille is usually the first prelude taught. Also Danseuses de Delphes is fairly easy.
If I were going to rank Book I in order from easiest -> hardest it would go 8, 6, 1, 10, 4, 2, 12, 9, 3, 11, 5, 7. La Cathedrale gets harder if you have small hands, and seriously tests your pedalling, but it's technically not so difficult. West Wind is the hardest of the set by a *lot*.
Book II would go 5, 10, 9, 2, 6, 1, 3, 7, 8, 11, 4, 12, and again, Fireworks is the hardest. Supposed to be the hardest prelude in the set but I think West Wind is hardest. La Fille and Des Pas are easier than anything in book 2.
