Hi Julia! I am also unemployed in NYC. I've been to Spicy Moon :) I like seeing videos of someone else looking for a job so I don't feel so alone. Good luck to everyone looking for a job out there!!
Thank you for making this series. I’m also going through this process of finding a job after being lay off. Your videos inspires me to keep going and to be diligent. I wish you can get good news soon.
Going on a month and a half after being laid off and I want to say I'm glad I have someone I am going on this journey with. I've been trying not to overthink, but I really felt heard when I realized you also go through the same wave of emotions. Take care and best of luck Julia!
Hi Julia, thank you for sharing your job search journey. I've been following you since the beginning of your 20 something diaries and it's really comforting and inspirational to see you post something similar to that concept. Thank you for being courageous and sharing your journey with us. It's especially hard since I'm also looking at the job market and sharpening my job skillset as well. You and Chloe Shih give me the inspiration to always "bet on yourself". All the best wishes! Just keep in mind that your struggles are our inspirations and your achievements are our happiness. I'll be continuing to cheer you on the virtual sidelines.
You are a great example for young girls. Take it from a mother of a girl. ❤ Your parents are great people, one can tell by you and your sisters. Wish you all the best in your job search
even i have been cramming over leetcode problems and more ML/DL concepts for my fresher job interviews. Watching your vlogs makes me really engergized!😃
If this was on Netflix, it will definitely be worth my subscription. Thank you for sharing your personal experience with us, Julia. I love every bit of it. Will be glued to this channel till when the good news finally arrives.
I am also a job seeker in Canada. I went through couples of interviews but I found it is not only difficult to find a company who values and trusts my capabilities but also difficult to find a position that I really want to work for long term. Unfortunately, job seekers don't have many options due to current economic situations and job market. Sometimes I am anxious about my future and don't wanna end up trying to find a job and living in 9-5 work life which looks stable but actually not stable for retirement nowadays. Good luck to you and all the job seekers. Wish your life goals come true.
This whole job search and actually landing a position sometimes feel like a random walk through a maze that you have no idea how close or far away from the end. But keep persisting. Years ago, I was senior management in a company seeking a candidate for a software / controls engineer position. One person went through interviews with key staff members, as well as with myself and the general manager. Everyone like the candidate and he seemed to be a good choice. I got the green light from the staff who interviewed him as well as the general manager, my boss. Somehow, something seemed off. I decided to do background checks. I called up the school where he said he got his degree and the registrar advised he didn't graduate and only took a few classes. Then I called up his previous employer and was advised by the HR manager that they are looking for him as he took a company laptop and they wanted their computer back! Needless to say, I told the general manager that this candidate was a no go! This goes to show even the top management in a company, the GM, who actually did not have a technical degree nor any software experience, often make hiring decisions based on the personality of the candidate! You can imagine what a clown show that would have turned into had this person got hired on!!!
Same here! I have been unemployed, and I am catching up on my life and interviewing for IT positions. It is a very long process. I understand how you are feeling! I am also doing leetcode.
hi julia, my familys also located far away (guangzhou and nyc coincidentally) and i find it so hard to be physically away living in seattle. this vid helped me feel not as alone, thank you for sharing
Thank you Julia for sharing your journey of job searching. Your videos were a place of comfort lately as I’m a recent graduate and I’ve been struggling to find a decent job for my level of experience. Sometimes anxiety comes in waves because of it, as if I’m worth nothing and everybody has cool high-paying jobs. But hope is there, so I’m trying my best to secure that job. Thank you!
I felt the little tickle in my throat as well, earlier this week. I gargled with betadine 10ml after every four hours and it was gone the following day. Before that i was sick with a cold, i suspect it was the throat healing... not sure though. But i recommend gargling
Hi Julia. I am very new to your channel and just came across these series. I am also going through this job searching period and thank you so much for making these videos. Thank you for making me feel like I am not going through this alone and best of luck!!❤
Hi Julia, I love watching your vlogs; you are young and talented. I have gained so many data analysis skills from you and Lillian. What do you think about using Power BI and Tableau? My previous company used Power BI, and I want to know which one is better before purchasing Tableau. Thanks.
As a soon to be New Grad, I am looking for jobs for months now and all of them want already experienced people. Even New Grad roles decline me becuase they want experience. It is hard and stressing but seeing someone awesome, intelligent and way more experienced than me going through somehow the same anxiety makes me realize no matter how good I get there is always gonna be problems. With you I saw that, and you make me feel better
omg that furikake is my favourite 😍I spend too much money shipping it from Kyoto to Canada but I NEED IT. Anyway I'm rooting for you, you work so hard and deserve the best!
Great insights on balancing the challenges of personal travel and job search in data science! Leveraging tools like Tableau and brushing up on SQL and Python can truly set candidates apart in today's competitive job market. 👍
Why all the IT related interview needs to go through leetcode... I am an IT guy, but i really think leetcode cant reflect the real level of working on project for comany.
agreed. it doesn't reflect anything except if you spend some time to learn how to do leetcode questions. everybody can just train themselves for it, it doesn't reflect what kind of worker you are, what you can bring to the company.
From what I’ve heard, it’s only mostly used for Faang and some big banks. It could be for coding jobs that require in-depth knowledge of ds & a. Most non tech companies don’t require it.
Actually knowing how to write efficient but simple code is the priority of most big tech. If their product are this good it is for a reason (and not dummy brute force). I’m not a fan of leet code either for interviews but it definitely helps structure your thoughts and force you consider different approaches to a pb which is fundamental in corporate world. Don’t forget you don’t create complex stuff by using some vaudou magic but by assembling bricks of fundamental knowledge (and that’s exactly what DS teaches).
These days I have been watching all of your videos that you posted on this channel and I love your content😍 out of curiosity, may I know what kind of platforms that you used while searching for jobs as I’m now also on the stage of job hunting… Thank You in advance for your answer ❤
I'm in Data & AI too and starting full time job search in Europe after grad school. I definitely do not expect tech screens to include SDE questions, is that normal to expect though as you stated sometimes companies have similar tech screens for all tech roles so it's not the norm? Which kind they may include? Is solving Leetcode Easy Python questions kind of enough? Getting motivated with your job search series honestly, gonna be serious on Leetcode to practice!
It's a tough market right now, but you'll eventually find something. Makes my foray into analytics/DS really eye opening, that someone with your credentials is struggling.
I took 4 weeks traveling to asia to visit family and missed an internal position opportunity I wanted to move up to. It is what it is. I had to move on.
love following your job hunt journey! i am about to graduate from college and im actively looking for jobs in data analysis/science, so your videos are really helpful and good for motivation!
Can you please make a video on how to write resume? I have been applying jobs but my resume is not getting picked up even after having work experience. I know there are lot of people applying to jobs but the job min requirements and my work experience match but still my resume is not selected… Not sure where I’m going wrong..
Yes, this is a good idea and cover letter advice. I'm on the same boat, I'm finishing my master's and I'm still getting not picked for an interview it is so stressful.
Julia, Me; 64 years old American-Chinese male with a Master’s degree in computer graphics. I quitted my job in early 30s w/o another one lining up. Good luck on your job hunting. You will eventually get there, just need a little bit more time! Curious to know what is the restaurant name in the end?
I'm a generalist and I'm surprised tech people nowadays need to go through so much interview practice and preparation. My interviews were all about talking nonsense, acting natural, making the interviewer like you. Glad i don't need tech screens interviews, I'm too lazy for that....my toughest interview piece is having to write a one page opinion essay on general topics. That said, i envy today's virtual interviews. During my time, ive to spend one hour travel to difficult to reach and industrial areas for a face to face interview, AND travel back home.
Beautiful Julia :) I am also looking for job opportunities far from you on the other side of the world, in Germany. I recently stumbled upon your channel and found your videos so calming because of your energy ❤ good luck on your search, whatever is yours will not pass you🍀
I'm a IT student at university of phoenix, and looking for entry job level. Any advice? I would love to have the experience before I get my degree. I just want to make sure by the time I get my degree; I'll have the experience. I have heard you can work at any IT positions while you're in school. But it's hard finding one that does that. Thank you! Keep up the great work and content!
I am also a Data Scientist in NYC. My experience is that recruiters rarely add value to the interview process and cannot answer detailed questions about what interview questions to expect. Companies are also aware that word gets around about what sorts of problems they ask so they try to mix it up and don't give each candidate the same questions. You are correct that Tableau skills are a requirement as are soft skills e.g. explaining your work. One skill you did not get into much is domain knowledge. Much of NYC tech is in the finance domain; if you are applying for finance roles you should acquire some general financial product and valuation knowledge. I just completed my own interview cycle resulting in a couple offers. Feel free to reach out for advice. The porridge looks delicious!
I would think after 2 weeks they'd be willing to work with you. I mean there's some people that have to stay at one job because of turning in a 2 weeks notice before moving on to the next.

Why all the IT related interview needs to go through leetcode... I am an IT guy, but i really think leetcode cant reflect the real level of working on project for comany.
because they need a standardized and bias proof way of assessing coding skills. grilling random questions about someone's project is prone to bias.
