Yep the guy is something else. Does all that and still looks relaxed the whole time on stage. If I stop concentrating for a second I'm done for when I play his stuff haha. I agree I would have loved to see this live on a later tour. Thanks for watching.
He was asked in an interview befpre if there are any songs 0f theirs that are too difficult live and it was heavily implied to be this one, it was only ever played on on the Show of Hands tour as far as I know. That live version is one of the songs/videos I show people when I am trying to explain how awesome Rush is.
Thumbs up! SUPERB technique and tone...fantastic playing. Can you imagine playing this bass line and singing at the same time? Geddy's from another planet. lol
Yeah originally I tried with a bit more of an '80s' sound on the steinberger but I preferred putting a bit of distortion on and playing harder. I think it works ok on the live albums. Thanks:)
Haha thanks. I think the steinbergers can sound really aggressive when played hard! They are associated with cleaner pop sounds from what I can see since that's what the bulk of players in the 80s were using them for, but I think mine is the dirtiest sounding bass I own in some ways
Thanks man. I will definitely do a cover of that at some point (Afterimage and Between the Wheels too) and one of my Synths can do the PPG part pretty well
Thanks. It's definitely one of the harder bass parts from this era. I managed to get a clean enough playthrough but often fluff bits of this song haha. Thanks for watching
Everytime i watch this, it is fucking mind blowing,. truly amazing talent, impeccable tone, sounds so cool, this is an incredibly talented human being,..............................
I hit the damned thing as hard as my fingers will allow me to :) the bass has a really nice growl naturally on the low notes and this video I put a fair amount of overdrive on with the yyz pedal so it's a combo of those two things I think. Thanks for watching!
Excellent cover. Now you just need to get a hold of a black and gold Wal and you’d be set!! I too love playing anything from power windows and HYF on my L2.
Thanks man glad you liked it. I would love a wal some day! Saving for synth stuff at the moment though instead haha. I always preferred the steinberger to the wals anyway so between the jazz, l2 and 4001 I'm pretty content on the bass front. Yes I totally agree the l2 is perfect for 80s rush stuff

Great job again! Never knew you could get that kind of sound from a Stein! And as others have said your “one finger” technique looks and sounds just like Geddy. Rush’s live shows were something else. The few times I went with my father are some of the best memories I have. I feel very fortunate to experience them.
Thanks man. I think steinbergers lend themselves really well to a bit of distortion especially the low notes. Same for me, seeing rush live were some of my favourite nights ever. They blew me away every time. Where did you see them?
I've been a Rush fan since I was a kid. I'm a drummer and have Always known Geddy Lee was an awesome bassist but holy s**it I've never realized how complex the bass lines are. Your bass sound and playing are awesome!
Really nice audio and wonderfully detailed video. Appreciated the sweet and growly tone that cut through the live recording. Also a superb way for the lay person to see just how dang busy Geddy was on this one with the video. He wanted to be a great juggler? He learned to juggle very well. And the creativity... what a way to use most of the fretboard and be busy while serving the song and not sounding too busy... it's only until you see it that you know.
Thanks for the comment! This is one of the most active bass parts in rush songs that I play. So much movement up and down the neck. It's a fun one though especially the show of hands tempo
This video is inspiring me to try to play parts of this song, but all I have is a little Stingray bass and the ability to pick with one finger. I love that little walk down at 0:24 and 0:46 but dang if they aren't at least twice the speed that I'm used to playing...Ah well, maybe I'll get there someday. I'd love to save up for a nice Jazz or Precision, and Rush songs are always just good fun to try! I call it, 'keeping up with Geddy'...
I think this one just takes time to build the speed. It's generally one shape on the left hand but just really quick up and down strings. It's a good one to play though, super funky! Good luck :)
Thanks. This video was just the YYZ pedal, but I now have the GED-2112 and used it in a video I'm about to upload. They are both great products though I'll still use my pedal anywhere I'm playing where I don't want to have to set up the rack unit!
Haha anyone who hates anything about the bass playing on Hold Your Fire isn't worth talking to anyway :). It's a masterpiece. Thanks for watching it's great to hear you like my tone with the Steinberger
@@josie1776 or they mean more poppy than Moving Pictures or Hemispheres. Not that I agree with what they say. I’m just saying that people who tend to hate the wal bass neglect the stuff Geddy wrote with it

Great playing. My comment has NOTHING to do with your playing... but I really would have rather seen/heard this cover on that jazz next to you! This video reminds me how glad I was when Geddy retired his Steinberger.
Thanks. Yeah it seems to divide opinion among people on these videos. I would probably use the jazz for everything but it's more interesting to vary it a bit. I think the steinberger has a really good growl for 80s rush though. Thanks for watching. I'm always interested in which basses people prefer from rushs catalogue 😀
It's definitely my preferred method. Wouldn't change Chris squires playing though! A really good player can make anything work I think! Thanks for watching :)
Awarding dude 👍. But there's some speaker or signal path distortion in there. Might need a compressor pedal? Also, we can't see you making goofy Geddy faces and head bobs
There was a lot of fuzz on the recording when I was doing these videos I just didn't ground it all properly. It has since been fixed (as much as I can given how much distortion I have on the sansamp) but sadly can't go back and edit the older videos :( thanks for watching. wow is there a rush song you can't cover? 🤣 hey can you do a video of passage to bangkok live version from rush chronicles album? that version is amazing
Yeah Bangkok will definitely feature on my channel. I'm not sure which one is on chronicles I'll probably do the snakes and arrows version since geddy played bass instead of his double neck on it. Thanks for the comment!
Great dexterity. Only one thing I see...(I hope you don't take then as an attack on your skills)...you are fretting the strings so hard that you are bending them out of key. A lighter touch is always a must.....I rhymed.
It may have just been slightly out of tune on this video, more likely than they are being bent out of tune. I'm sure there are other ones where i'm slightly out too, I normally put new strings on for videos and they can be quite temperemental! Thanks for watching
People who overlook this period are missing out on some really funky bass lines
Yeah and some great lyrics too! I think hold your fire is one of rush's top few albums. Thanks for watching
How the hell did Geddy sing and play this bass line? Unbelievable. Why they never played this again after this tour is mind boggling to me.

Well done sir. Well done from a fan that always thought this masterpiece of bass work was underrated.
Thanks! It's one of the classic basslines from this era. I guess just didn't end up being a popular enough song to be brought back for more tours
Dear GOD. Flawless. Also shows me how you could really get away with a less synthy more aggressive version of this song.
