You sir just saved my life and stopped me from tearing out my own hair! I don't understand why Whatsapp would give us the option to create a local backup and then make it almost impossible to restore. I must have watched at least 7 different tutorials until i found yours!
Thanks for a very helpful video, but I found that you actually don't need to go through the step of going onto Airplane Mode whilst Whatsapp is searching for a Google Drive back-up - not in Android 13 anyway. I simply copied the com.whatsapp folder onto my PC, uninstalled Whatsapp from my phone, moved the com.whatsapp folder back into the Android > media folder and then reinstalled Whatsapp and during the set-up process it immediately asked me if I wanted to restore from my LOCAL backup! (I said yes please) All of this begs the question though, why don't Whatsapp allow you to simply click a link to restore from local backup anytime you like? It's ridiculous that people have to spend hours searching Google and watching RUclips videos to perform what should be a very simple task!
Anyway, for those who choose to use Airplane Mode method (like what I did), we need to enable the internet connection again when the whatsapp try to restore the messages
They have a deal with Google - it was in the recent lawsuit against Meta around insufficiently protecting customer privacy. Unfortunately this has led to a worse experience for users. I am very much against it on privacy grounds and only use WhatsApp with family and a very small set of friends - Signal for everyone else.
@Forlogson Did you have both Google Drive backup enabled and local backup available and it still showed you the option to restore from local? Or you didn't have Google Drive backup enabled or maybe not backed up since long (so your local backup was newer)?

It worked on S22, the key point to let it work is to do backup, reset data and copy all the three folders (media backups and databases), only this way wapp recognizes there was a backup. Thanks a lot.
Brilliant. Simply explained and fixed the problem I was facing. NB I got another prompt after I pressed restore (after that last step where I had forced it to find the internal backup) which wanted internet on again. I was worried about this as I didn't want it to go back to any online backup before it had restored from the internal storage. But I noticed in the video that you did have internet back on at that stage (once it had already found the right backup with flight mode on) so I tried turning it back on and, hey presto, all the messages and media are back... Great job friend!

Hey Guys! If you're trying to transfer WhatsApp chats between an old android version to a newer one.... the latest Android OS changes the location of the old WhatsApp folder!

I logged in again on old device. Then copy pasted backup folder to new phone All this time, i kept new device on airplane. After this, I turned on internet on new device, it askrd me to verify my device again. Now when it was looking to restore backups.I turned on airplane mode again.Forcing it it lookup for local backups.Which it did.

Hello. I have a problem I recently made a backup compressed it and transferred to my pc then deleted the account from indide tha app itself. I re-register now after placing back files but whenever i click restore it fails to restore idk y. Can you please help
IT WORKS! Anyway, if we restore when in airplane mode, there will be notification that ask us to connect the internet. After i connect it (deactivate the airplane mode), it works. Thanks dude

Hi, please did you experience any initial difficulty while trying to restore? I turned on Airplane mode and I was able to see the backup, connected back to wifi and the backup take forever and eventually wont restore. Did you experience this initially?
Just wanted to say a huge thanks. I don't have a backup in Google Drive so moving the folder - but doing it at the right step, worked for me. Specifically - I launched WhatsApp once so it created /Android/media/com.whatsapp. Then I moved my WhatsApp folder into it. The restore option was right there. Hopefully the lawsuit against Meta for breaching its users privacy will mean we get an offline backup option back!

I had a little bit of a Problem, because apparently whatsapp created folders in the internal storage AND my SD card, when I copied the backup to the internal storage whatsapp folder, it wouldn't find anything, but it worked perfectly after I copied them to the sd card folder. thanks for the tutorial!
Hi your video was really helpful and I was trying to find an answer for this for years but now I’m sure I can copy and paste as a backup on my pc But there’s one more query Long story short I didn’t have backup enabled on my galaxy a7 and broke If so inserted the SIM card in new phone and ended up using it like new But it laid broken from 2019 to 2020 and that’s when I got it fixed I will attempt to copy the WhatsApp folder but will the chats show on the new phone? WhatsApp is active and I have many important messages but I also want the old ones or is there anyway to view the chats and pictures on the pc? Thx
I think the issue here may be different because you'll have to re-install WhatsApp on your new phone and you'll most likely lose your CURRENT chats (& media?) if you restore from an older backup. Unfortunately, there's no way to effectively combine both old and new chats. On the topic of viewing older chats on PC, I remember a long time ago I decrypted the SQL database files by using a rooted phone and retrieving the decryption Key. There was an XDA app that could read the chat contents of the database file however that was a LONG, long, time ago. Not sure where this stands currently but you may want to try the XDA community for help in this regard. Cheers!
Absolute lifesaver!!!! The airplane mode was the missing step (it took us three days of struggle to move whatsapp from Huawei to Samsung), thank you!! For anyone with an older Android version (I think this phone was V9) the storage is as follows: File Manager/Internal Storage/Android and then you dump the whatsapp folder, not in Android/Media/.com.whatsapp etc. Because it was a huge folder we just zipped it beforehand and then extracted it in the new phone.
With mine, it shows that it has found a backup file but when I restore it, there are none of my chats, only the group chats. So it's like a reinstall without databases files. I also tried to restore to a previous state so I changed the name of an a few days old file (one with date in it) to the name of the latest file. But as I said. It finds a backup, but doesn't restore the chats. Do you have any idea?
Hmm thats a strange one. Seems conflicting that there would be Group chats only. It could be that your original backups you have may not contain your regular chats at all or that its finding an online backup somehow bypassing your local one. Have you tried a complete clean reinstall of WhatsApp? That's the only way I figure to be sure. Also try physically disconnecting your internet when it searches for your backup perhaps its somehow finding a way online.
@@squishyhammer i also had this problem, it only showed empty groups! I had to rename the internal storage/whatsapp folder to /whatsappold, and copy all the backup files in it to the new location Android/ etc, like explained in the video. This is because newer android versions 11 and up use this new location as the video explains! To make sure, i first made a copy to my PC drive, and from there copied it to the correct location in the phone
Thank you very much. Now a days, WhatsApp help is not at all showing how to do local backup. Before some years it was showing. Now a days WhatsApp is showing a new feature of direct transfer from one phone to another without any backup. But my old phone was degraded to old android version of 5.0 . The new transfer feature supports only for the version of 5.1 and above.
@@squishyhammer If so, then I will have to purchase a Google one drive account and then transfer my whatsapp to a new Android phone. It is showing that my last local backup was on 10th January. This was done by me manually, by touching the backup button. It was not daily automatically backing up. Now it is showing "Backup your chats and media to your Google account's storage" . There is no option at all for local backup.

Great video. I will test this restore method soon. But FYI I did a normal GDrive backup from old phone (without video). Restored from GDrive to new phone and running. And then I copied my video (separately backed up to PC from old phone) files directly from PC into new phone's internal storage video folder for WhatsApp. All is good ... From the chat all video are working as normal and can be played. Hope it helps. This is on Android 10 (new phone) and the old phone was Android 13.

What if it specifically says can't backup the particular backup db file? And if it asks me to restore older ones? And what if i only saved that one particular db file and i want that one to be restored no options?

When I reinstall Whatsapp that sgit doesn't show me the option to restore, it simply loads my profile without any history, I can only see my group chats. How do I fix this?
I changed my main WhatsApp account to my new phone and „bound“ my old phone that has the local backup on it, to my new phone. When I changed the main WhatsApp account back from my new to my old phone, my old phone had one third of the contacts and no chat history at all. I have an local backup on my old phone from 2 weeks ago. Can I just uninstall WhatsApp from my old phone and download it again and hope that it asked me to restore my local data or do I risk loosing my local data by deleting the app. I could also load the WhatsApp backup folder on my pc but I m traveling at the moment and that would be quite a hazel. First, I tested whether the app will recognize db files or not. It worked, so I moved media files too :-) Those methods are written in Whatsapp FAQ but they might change over time. So I had doubts if they are still valid. Thank you for giving hopes to try😁
I Will write expirience for Huawei. Steps are good until restoring backup. I don't have Google drive so I needed this. So when you get verryfication turn on airplane mode. then system will find backup, click couple times and close app every time. Then turn wifi and they will retrieve data from storage.Tip is that that don't say it is from storage just revive backup.And done.after couple hours suffering.And zipp files on laptop if is more than 500mb .mine was 3gb.Good luck
I have a problem, when i get to the step to skip twice, whatsapp doesn't show me the local back up, it just get me to put my name and start from 0. I have alredy put the archive of my chats in the folder named databases when i get through it.

It all works. But when it found the Local backup and I press Restore, it takes long time in "preparing messages" and then failed !! I tried many times with different copies of backup but same result. Plz help... P.s. should I disable Airplane mode in any point? as I see in the video at last minutes you are connected to WiFi

if I dont have the phone number can I still see old whatsapp messages this way ? For example, my dad's whatsapp is on the galaxy A70 and I want to see his old chat messages without logging to whatsapp on this device using his phone number. The reason I'm doing this is because my dad made several backups and duplicates on his laptop and im trying to keep only original photos and videos according to when they were received/sent. I would copy the entire Whatsapp folder. That way you'll retain your all associated media files (shared pics, videos, etc.) - unless you don't want them. Otherwise you'll only be restoring your chats. I believe it took me 3 tries, but it could be because I was messing around... as long as you disconnect from your internet you'll eventually get that message allowing you to SKIP then restore from your local backup.
thank you for the video, but after restore your chats screen shown and it starts preparing to restart it keeps in showing me a message that says: "unable to start restoring your message history backup. please check that you are connected to the internet and try again" if I turn on the wifi it takes me back to google drive backup. otherwise I have two options either to skip restore or retry ( knowing that if I click retry with airplane mode, the previous message keeps in showing up)

Seems like it detected correctly however the process aborted for unknown reasons. Perhaps its may be an issue with available space? You'll need extra room for the app to process the database.
Still same issue persist.after Airoplane mode it just skips and move on to profile name. Did everything correctly,names, file folders in correct folders.etc. Still cant find solution.
This is absolutely useless now. Whatsapp does not support local backups anymore apparently. It attempts to use Google Drive backup, and if you skip that, it immediately just goes to profile info without searching for local backups.

New Updates on my Android 10 phone just 2 days ago WhatsApp was installed/running from internal storage "root\WhatsApp" folder. Yesterday all of a sudden noticed all the contents got moved to "root\Android\media\com.whatsapp\WhatsApp" folder. And the original "root\WhatsApp" folder still there and became empty. Now today the original "root\WhatsApp" folder is gone/removed automatically. Wow looks like it is trying to standardize install location for all Android versions now?? Anyone else noticed the same location change for their older Android version's WhatsApp??

Unfortunately it doesn't work. I followed the instructions precisely, but at the point it should show my local backup it just skips on to the profile and the setup ends.

I logged in again on old device. Then copy pasted backup folder to new phone
All this time, i kept new device on airplane.
After this, I turned on internet on new device, it askrd me to verify my device again. Now when it was looking to restore backups.I turned on airplane mode again.Forcing it it lookup for local backups.Which it did.
Yes it is work, after waited the otp for 45 hours, Remember, after verifying your OTP and searching for Backup on Google Drive, re-enter the WA app in airplane mode,

Hi, please did you experience any initial difficulty while trying to restore? I turned on Airplane mode and I was able to see the backup, connected back to wifi and the backup take forever and eventually wont restore. Did you experience this initially?

Just wanted to say a huge thanks. I don't have a backup in Google Drive so moving the folder - but doing it at the right step, worked for me.
Specifically - I launched WhatsApp once so it created /Android/media/com.whatsapp. Then I moved my WhatsApp folder into it. The restore option was right there.
Hopefully the lawsuit against Meta for breaching its users privacy will mean we get an offline backup option back!

I had a little bit of a Problem, because apparently whatsapp created folders in the internal storage AND my SD card, when I copied the backup to the internal storage whatsapp folder, it wouldn't find anything, but it worked perfectly after I copied them to the sd card folder. thanks for the tutorial!

I think the issue here may be different because you'll have to re-install WhatsApp on your new phone and you'll most likely lose your CURRENT chats (& media?) if you restore from an older backup. Unfortunately, there's no way to effectively combine both old and new chats.
On the topic of viewing older chats on PC, I remember a long time ago I decrypted the SQL database files by using a rooted phone and retrieving the decryption Key. There was an XDA app that could read the chat contents of the database file however that was a LONG, long, time ago. Not sure where this stands currently but you may want to try the XDA community for help in this regard. Cheers!
Absolute lifesaver!!!! The airplane mode was the missing step (it took us three days of struggle to move whatsapp from Huawei to Samsung), thank you!! For anyone with an older Android version (I think this phone was V9) the storage is as follows: File Manager/Internal Storage/Android and then you dump the whatsapp folder, not in Android/Media/.com.whatsapp etc. Because it was a huge folder we just zipped it beforehand and then extracted it in the new phone.

With mine, it shows that it has found a backup file but when I restore it, there are none of my chats, only the group chats. So it's like a reinstall without databases files. I also tried to restore to a previous state so I changed the name of an a few days old file (one with date in it) to the name of the latest file. But as I said. It finds a backup, but doesn't restore the chats. Do you have any idea?
Hmm thats a strange one. Seems conflicting that there would be Group chats only. It could be that your original backups you have may not contain your regular chats at all or that its finding an online backup somehow bypassing your local one. Have you tried a complete clean reinstall of WhatsApp? That's the only way I figure to be sure. Also try physically disconnecting your internet when it searches for your backup perhaps its somehow finding a way online.

@@squishyhammer i also had this problem, it only showed empty groups! I had to rename the internal storage/whatsapp folder to /whatsappold, and copy all the backup files in it to the new location Android/ etc, like explained in the video. This is because newer android versions 11 and up use this new location as the video explains! To make sure, i first made a copy to my PC drive, and from there copied it to the correct location in the phone

Now a days WhatsApp is showing a new feature of direct transfer from one phone to another without any backup. But my old phone was degraded to old android version of 5.0 . The new transfer feature supports only for the version of 5.1 and above.

@@squishyhammer If so, then I will have to purchase a Google one drive account and then transfer my whatsapp to a new Android phone. It is showing that my last local backup was on 10th January. This was done by me manually, by touching the backup button. It was not daily automatically backing up. Now it is showing "Backup your chats and media to your Google account's storage" . There is no option at all for local backup.

Great video. I will test this restore method soon. But FYI I did a normal GDrive backup from old phone (without video). Restored from GDrive to new phone and running. And then I copied my video (separately backed up to PC from old phone) files directly from PC into new phone's internal storage video folder for WhatsApp. All is good ... From the chat all video are working as normal and can be played. Hope it helps. This is on Android 10 (new phone) and the old phone was Android 13.

But WhatsApp do incremental backups to Google, not full backup each time... So upload shoud not be the problem here.
I changed my main WhatsApp account to my new phone and „bound“ my old phone that has the local backup on it, to my new phone. When I changed the main WhatsApp account back from my new to my old phone, my old phone had one third of the contacts and no chat history at all. I have an local backup on my old phone from 2 weeks ago. Can I just uninstall WhatsApp from my old phone and download it again and hope that it asked me to restore my local data or do I risk loosing my local data by deleting the app. I could also load the WhatsApp backup folder on my pc but I m traveling at the moment and that would be quite a hazel. I would rather skip the loading to the folder to my pc. Thanks in advance

Steps are good until restoring backup.
I don't have Google drive so I needed this.
So when you get verryfication turn on airplane mode. then system will find backup, click couple times and close app every time. Then turn wifi and they will retrieve data from storage.Tip is that that don't say it is from storage just revive backup.And done.after couple hours suffering.And zipp files on laptop if is more than 500mb .mine was 3gb.Good luck

Running into this problem currently. Have tried this method but all the media in my chats won't restore/ is broken. Am i doing something wrong?
I have a problem, when i get to the step to skip twice, whatsapp doesn't show me the local back up, it just get me to put my name and start from 0. I have alredy put the archive of my chats in the folder named databases when i get through it.
My backups consists of the entire main WhatsApp folder vs individual database files to avoid issues like this so I can't pinpoint specifics but I'll try to help:
- Uninstall your new WhatsApp installation (make sure you still have your original backup elsewhere)
- Copy your "msgstore.db.crypt14" backup over (or crypt15 depending) to your "Android\media\com.whatsapp\WhatsApp\Databases" or "\WhatsApp\Databases"
- If the folders don't exist, make sure you re-create them manually (the folders are also Case-Sensitive)
- Reinstall WhatsApp and check if it recoginizes
Lastly, I would try to start by isolating the differences of a working scenario vs your backup, perhaps its the WhatsApp location, filename discrepancies, or worst-case scenario, the backup files themselves. We might also consider WhatsApp ceasing to restore older versions of backups.

if I dont have the phone number can I still see old whatsapp messages this way ? For example, my dad's whatsapp is on the galaxy A70 and I want to see his old chat messages without logging to whatsapp on this device using his phone number. The reason I'm doing this is because my dad made several backups and duplicates on his laptop and im trying to keep only original photos and videos according to when they were received/sent. I would copy the entire Whatsapp folder. That way you'll retain your all associated media files (shared pics, videos, etc.) - unless you don't want them. Otherwise you'll only be restoring your chats. I believe it took me 3 tries, but it could be because I was messing around... as long as you disconnect from your internet you'll eventually get that message allowing you to SKIP then restore from your local backup.

thank you for the video, but after restore your chats screen shown and it starts preparing to restart it keeps in showing me a message that says: "unable to start restoring your message history backup. please check that you are connected to the internet and try again" if I turn on the wifi it takes me back to google drive backup. otherwise I have two options either to skip restore or retry ( knowing that if I click retry with airplane mode, the previous message keeps in showing up)

Seems like it detected correctly however the process aborted for unknown reasons. Perhaps its may be an issue with available space? You'll need extra room for the app to process the database.

This is absolutely useless now. Whatsapp does not support local backups anymore apparently. It attempts to use Google Drive backup, and if you skip that, it immediately just goes to profile info without searching for local backups.

New Updates on my Android 10 phone just 2 days ago WhatsApp was installed/running from internal storage "root\WhatsApp" folder. Yesterday all of a sudden noticed all the contents got moved to "root\Android\media\com.whatsapp\WhatsApp" folder. And the original "root\WhatsApp" folder still there and became empty. Now today the original "root\WhatsApp" folder is gone/removed automatically. Wow looks like it is trying to standardize install location for all Android versions now?? Anyone else noticed the same location change for their older Android version's WhatsApp??

@@michaeltarek6323 If you still have your original backup WhatsApp folders on your PC, make sure you uninstall that nonfunctioning WhatsApp on your phone and remove the existing folders that may have been created then try the process again from scratch. You could try the following processes:
