That footage of the crash and it coming to a stop and it looks like it’s breaking his neck, that’s real footage from the Olympics. I remember watching them in the Olympics as a kid, everyone was rooting for them because they had never seen ice and snow before. Very cool.
BJ?!?! Yes, it really happened. Jamaicans in Calgary Olympics in 1988. We were deep into watching on TV and the Jamaican team gripped our imagination and the country was rooting for them!
As a Calgary kid who lived through these Olympics this movie is my favourite. The front of the sled they used is hanging above the entrance to the country bar in the movie. It was stolen once but I think they have it back again.
Here in Calgary, the Jamaican Bobsled Team were absolutely beloved during the 1988 Olympics. Ditto Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards, the British ski-jumper (you should react to the movie they made about him!)
"A gold medal is a wonderful thing. But if you're not enough without it, you'll never be enough with it." -Irv Blitzer, portrayed by John Candy in "Cool Runnings. The crash didn't happen for the reasons shown in the film, but it did happen. They used real footage of it in the film. One of team members later said he "felt a bump" when they tipped, but did not realize they had turned over until he started to smell his helmet (which was fiberglass) friction-burning on the ice, "which is something that stays with you for many years afterward."
It was indeed based on a true story. There was no cheating coach or douchebag bobsledders but in 88 the first Jamaican Olympics bobsled team showed up. Everyone, myself included, was thinking wtf is Jamaica doing in the winter Olympics. The runs were accurate. It was definitely one of the big stories of that Olympics. As you say, it was must-see TV at the time. I was in the U.S. and everyone was talking about it and cheering them on. Great fun and they really ended up becoming a very competitive team thanks to Jamaica's deep well of great sprinters.
I went to this movie with my two children when they were in their early teens. At that age they didn't like each other much. It was Christmas Break so I decided to take them to a movie. My son wanted to watch this one me and my daughter didn't but we gave in. We had so much fun they both laughed so much. It was one of our happiest memories. As my children matured in their late teens they were two peas in a pod until my daughter died at 37. We were devastated. Time has past and the memories are all we have this is one of my son's favorite memories of his sister. Thank you so much. It hurt's everyday but the memories are lovely.

But I was forced to check my carry on, and then the airline lost my suitcase and carry on bag. Great Hugh Jackman/Tarron Egerton/Christopher Walken flick that gives a shout-out to the Cool Runnings team in it too. RIP John Candy
The flying Scotsman is a great movie about Graeme Obree. He set the hour record twice on a bike he built out of a washing machine. His riding style (superman) was banned and his rival was Chris Boardman on his $500,000 LOTUS carbon fiber bike. Johnny Lee Miller is the lead actor I highly recommend it 👍

Yep yep yep. Ofc, they have to train out of the country in the winter time, but it might surprise you to realize that most of bobsled training is OUT of the sled. With the limited number of tracks in the world (approximately 14) and of course the summer temperatures, it becomes impossible to practice bobsledding year-round. They are only able to actually practice on the ice from October through the end of March. After that, the cost of keeping ice on a refrigerated track is just too inefficient. Ultimately, the bulk of their time - almost all of the off season and two or three days a week during the on season - is spent in the weight room, where developing power and strength for accelerating the bobsled is of the utmost importance. Off-season workouts are split between time on the running track and time in the weight room. To break it down even further, their lifting workouts are probably 80% lower body work; you don't want a massive chest and arms because you need to hunker down in the sled, and large shoulders will just be a windsail slowing down the sled. They need to be strong, but still lean. Overall, bobsledder training is a combination of an Olympic weight lifter’s and an Olympic sprinter’s. They need the strength to be able to move the 500 lb sled and still have the speed to be able to keep up as it gets moving down the icy hill before they jump in. Interestingly, a lot of bobsled first-timers fail out of the program because they cannot handle the G-forces generated by the sled's speed. And while I LOVE "Cool Runnings" no way in the world would Sanka be the brakeman unless he got WAY stronger. Using this particular lineup, Yul Brynner would have/should have been the brakeman, because he has the most weight to push and needs to be the strongest man on the team.
This is such a wholesome, fun, inspirational movie. TRUE STORY TOO! Parts of it, anyway. There was a Jamaican bobsled team. Another winter Olympics themed movie is "Eddie the eagle", based on a true story where an amateur ski jumper took part in the winter Olympics and became a favourite underdog.
At the beginning of the movie it should have said, "MOST of what follows is true", just like "Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid". All I can say is "Jah man, let's do some Cool Runnings". The Jamaican Bobsled Team was a phenomenon at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, I remember rooting for them because they tried so hard.

The only Olympic sport I ever got in to is the bobsled. I watched it religiously when I was younger. I remember the Jamaicans showing up in 1988. It was a huge deal. I have been rooting for them ever sense.
One of the real-life sledders said that he didn't even know they'd turned over until he *smelled* his fiberglass helmet melting from the friction on the ice. He said that's a smell that'll stay with you for *years* afterward.
FYI When the Jamaican four-man bobsled team made their Olympic debut in 1988, the story went on to inspire the much adored Disney film “Cool Runnings” - and the unlikely underdogs from Jamaica helped familiarize the unique sport for the masses.
The bridge that you see the team running across spanned the Elbow River. It was a Calgary landmark, but sadly destroyed during the 2013 floods. The Relax Inn and the Ranchman's were both legit businesses at the time of filming and just a few blocks away from each other. The Ranchman's did indeed feature country line dancing. Neither of them remain in business. The "revolving restaurant" (that didn't actually revolve during this film) is the very high-end restaurant atop the Calgary Tower. It does indeed revolve, at a rate of about 55 minutes per revolution.
The movie is based on a true event, but they purposefully made it very loosely accurate for drama purposes. In reality, they were not mocked and were the laughing stock. They were actually cheered and encouraged by their peers. Countries offered good quality sleds. They trained in a country with snow (like many extreme athletes do when they go from skate boarding to snowboarding). Jamaica businesses also fully supported them from the beginning.
I saw this movie when it came out in a theater on vacation in the Cayman Islands just West of Jamaica. The local crowd was so pumped. I’ll never forget it.
Oooooomg!!!!! Yessss!!!! Hahahahaha "some people say they know they can't believe, Jamaica we have a bobsled team." Ya'Mon! 😂😂😂 Sanka is my favorite. ❤️💛💚✌️ "Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up it's bobsled time!" 🤣
This was the second to last movie that the late, great John Candy COMPLETED, and third last movie he MADE... His final movie was "Wagons East" in which he passed away late in the filming, but he did film enough they were able to finish it without him... His movie "Canadian Bacon" was filmed between the two movies, but was the last to be released, in 1995 (Thank you to @stevemielke for pointing that out to me)... RIP John Candy
@@stevemielke Ok, I had to do a bit of research on it, and both films (Cool Runnings and Canadian Bacon) were filmed in 1993... "Cool Runnings" was filmed EARLY in the year, and "Canadian Bacon" was filmed LATE in the year, so you are correct, "Canadian Bacon" WAS the last film he completed... as well as the LAST John Candy movie to be released... "Wagons East" was released BEFORE "Canadian Bacon" despite being filmed after it... Thank you for pointing it out, I will correct it above...
I love this movie!!! The actor who played Yuel Brenner was a big action star in the late 80's and early 90's. Doug E. Doug always played the comic relief in a lot of movies.
I love this movie… I’m Australian and we got inspired by this as well (as another hot country with no cold areas, we kill it in summer sports but are not good at winter sports)… and I remember being in tears watching them walking over the line Brilliant underrated movie 👍
I worked for the Olympics and also on the movie. The movie is highly fictionalized. Nobody was against them certainly not the other bobsled teams who offered help and support. Everybody loves them and did whatever they could to help them, but the movie felt that necessary to make bad guys that did not exist. Which is unfortunate.
@ddiamondr1 it's Hollywood. It would be pretty boring if everybody got along. It's like the Notre dame head coach in Rudy who didn't want him on the team. That didn't happen in real life either but you need an antagonist.
@@anthonyanderson9303 I’ve worked for Hollywood studios. As a writer, I realize that story requires drama and conflict but their real story had enough obstacles for story and turning the other sled teams and the entire Olympic organization, all who embraced them and did what they could to help, into a-holes was cheap and lazy writing.
They had the bobsled from the movie at the Olympic park in Calgary back in ‘95. Got pictures of the hubby and oldest pretending to bobsled in it. A family favorite movie to this day.❤️
This movie reminds me of home. My grandparents lived in Calgary and were there during the games. They actually hosted the parents of an athlete, one of the many ways citizens could volunteer.
Bobsled is extremely popular in Jamaica and it seems like they been eying other winter sports too. Only 1 person qualified for alpine skiing in 2022 but it's just amazing how a country with inhabitants that never seen snow just 1 day decided to join the winter Olympics in 1988 has continued to qualify and grow from it ever since.
This was based on the true story!!! Of the first time ever that Jamaica had a bobsled team and qualified to participate in their very first Olympics!! A great True story!!
Love that movie!! I saw it like 100 times, but always it cheer me up.. It become cult like comedy in my country....and funny memes source as well!! Because of your reaction I've just subscribed..
This is a Wonderful movie, superb cast Leon (Derice), Sanka (Doug E Doug) and John Candy especially. It also stretches the idea of “based on a true story” about as far as possible. 1. Irv Blitzer and… well ALL of the cast, are fictional characters. They are based on real people though (Blitzer being based on 2 different Americans living in Jamaica). One thing the movie does get completely correct, is its premise, the idea of getting Olympic level sprinters to push the sleds. The irony is that, in the subsequent 10 Winter Olympics since Calgary, Jamaica 🇯🇲 has not yet Medaled in any Bobsledding events… they do currently hold the world records for the fastest push-start times for the men’s 2 person and 4 person events, as well as the women’s 2 person, lol sounds like the idea they had back in ‘88 was at least a sound one. 😄
Two fun name jokes - Sanka Coffey is supposed to be inspired by Sanka coffee, and Yul Brenner is a reference to real-life actor Yul Brynner, who won the Oscar in 1956 for "The King and I."
I remember when this happened at the Olympics. This movie was true and part of the footage in the movie was the actual footage of the wreck. I remember being very excited for the Jamaican team because they improved so much during the event.
Another reason why I love watching movies with BJ is, only BJ, after watching a movie and seeing the end credits where it talks about how they were respected when they returned to the Olympics, only BJ would still believe the movie was not about a true event lol I love you guys!!
one of my all time favorite movies as a kid back then. I love this movie, but back then that was all i was talking about and kept saying kiss my lucky egg before doing anything ahahaha such a funny flick ( Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme! Get on up, its bobsled time! )
Not only did Jamaica actually start a bobsled team in 1988 and go to the Olympics, but they still compete to this day! I always look for them every winter Olympics, and even though they've never medaled, I love the perseverance!
This was one of the first movies that was infinitely quotable for us kids in the neighborhood. It did for Jamaica what Crocodile Dundee did for Australia.
This movie had a profound effect on me. I remember vividly my dad taking me to see this in the theater when I was 10. It was my favorite movie for many years after.
If you liked this one, youll love Eddie the Eagle. Its set at the same Olympics and theres even a mention of the Jamaican bobsled team in there. I think youd love it.
Yeah, this movie is awesome. It's been forever since I saw it. John Candy was such a treasure. So many movies of his are part of my childhood. In the city I live in, Winnipeg, there was this little restaurant in my neighbourhood where he'd eat everytime he was in town. He was gone too soon...
Love this movie, it's such a surreal nostalgia trip. Rode past the Olympic Oval building on my bike ride to and from school for years along with playing basketball in there, seeing them run the rope bridge at the Calgary Zoo and down by the Bow River to learn how to run on ice, and even the speech John Candy gives to the committee to get them un-disqualified is in the room at Canada Olympic Park is where I sat waiting for an ambulance after breaking my arm snowboarding there. Amazing movie, amazing true story, and great reactors. Thanks for the trip down memory lane guys! RIP John Candy
Everyone watched this live on tv! This movie is a family favorite my kids watched it all through their childhood and now we will watch it with our grandchildren. This movie never gets old and defies time. GREAT FAMILY MOVIE!
I'm so happy to see this reaction! This fish out of water team trying and working so hard was such an inspiration to me, and I went out and bought the soundtrack to keep those positive vibes❤✨️
When the Olympics were really the Olympics. The world’s best amateur athletes competing for the pride of representing their countries. Cool Runnings is a fantastic movie and is the late John Candy at his best. The movie captures the spirit of the true Olympic Games.
"I SEE PRIDE! POWER! A BAD-ASS MUTHA WHO DON'T TAKE NO CRAP OFF OF NOBODY!" Every now and then, I will just randomly say this to myself. It makes me laugh, but I also use it as a little pick-me-up, too.
Jamaica did go to the Calgary Olympics as a bobsled team. That’s one of the true parts of this film. A lot of the film is Hollywood as usual but they definitely did compete and crash.
The fight at Ranchmans bar really happened too. They did not stay in a hotel together though. The Olympians all stayed in the dorm rooms at the University of Calgary. My friend who was going there looked after them (olympians) while they were staying there.
I love this movie. It’s such a fun uplifting movie. 29:56 and he wasn’t doing it to punish the Jamaican athletes. He was doing it to punish Irv and the athletes were just caught in the middle. I like how Irv told him to punish him and let the guys compete. I think the first misunderstanding on the time was that he hadn’t been part of Olympic bobsledding in years so he hadn’t kept up that it was so competitive that they had to change the qualifying. The minute flat was cause the judge hated Irv. 36:46 at this point everyone started seeing them as serious athletes. They could’ve just quit after the crash and let the emergency crew take care of their sled but they found a way to finish. Plus that one guy wasn’t trying to hurt them. He was trying to hurt Irv.
Yes, B.J. there really is a Jamaican bobsled team. This movie was about the very first one at the 1988 Calgary Olympics.
I was looking for this comment. I'm sure it is loosely based of the Jamaican bobsleigh, but still it is a great movie. I love it

This movie was HUGE when it came out. Idk why it sorta…idk, fell off the radar, but it’s great! So glad y’all reacted to it
My favorite movie as a kid, I’ve watched this probably over 100 times
The movie is based on a true event, but they purposefully made it very loosely accurate for drama purposes. In reality, they were not mocked and were the laughing stock. They were actually cheered and encouraged by their peers. Countries offered good quality sleds. They trained in a country with snow (like many extreme athletes do when they go from skate boarding to snowboarding). Jamaica businesses also fully supported them from the beginning.
I saw this movie when it came out in a theater on vacation in the Cayman Islands just West of Jamaica. The local crowd was so pumped. I’ll never forget it.
This ABSOLUTELY is based on a true story. I remember watching the Calgary Olympics and we LOVED the Jamaican bobsled team.🎉🎉🎉
Canadian Bacon was actually the last one he completed if I am not mistaken.
I love this movie, i also love John Candy, one of the best guys out there back then, and the next year he died 😞 RIP.
I love this movie!!! The actor who played Yuel Brenner was a big action star in the late 80's and early 90's. Doug E. Doug always played the comic relief in a lot of movies.
Malik Yoba. I wouldn't, exactly, call him an action star. He was in one of my favorite shows in the 90's, though. New York Undercover.
I love this movie… I’m Australian and we got inspired by this as well (as another hot country with no cold areas, we kill it in summer sports but are not good at winter sports)… and I remember being in tears watching them walking over the line
Brilliant underrated movie 👍
A great one and loosely based on a true story.
Its so historically inaccurate Im surprised Michael Bay didnt direct it!
about the only thing they got true was Jamica had a bobsled team
A fun movie.
RIP John Candy. I recommend Uncle Buck (1989), Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987).
Wow! I haven't seen this movie in at least 20 years! An absolute classic!
Jamaican bobsled team competed in 2022 Olympics and have won gold at international competitions. Nigeria also has a bobsled team
Dang, I was a young teen when this came out and after we saw it in the theater, my friends and I quoted this movie for years after!
The movie script was written by Mike Goldberg. I was in high school with Mike. He was a good guy. He died around 15-20 years ago
I've always said that this movie is very underrated. Too me, this is an outstanding movie. Thanks for the reaction.
Another reason why I love watching movies with BJ is, only BJ, after watching a movie and seeing the end credits where it talks about how they were respected when they returned to the Olympics, only BJ would still believe the movie was not about a true event lol I love you guys!!
"What is that? That looks like a torpedo" - BJ
I busted out laughing....
Lol, yeah, he's not wrong..... 😂
one of my all time favorite movies as a kid back then.
Great film that still holds up and YES this is loosely based on a true story. First Jamaican bobsled team was Calgary 1988!
Love this movie! I cry at the end every time.
I’m from Scotland and we get really cold weather, I always quote “I’m freezing my royal Rastafarian naynays off” 🤣
This was one of the first movies that was infinitely quotable for us kids in the neighborhood. It did for Jamaica what Crocodile Dundee did for Australia.
This movie had a profound effect on me. I remember vividly my dad taking me to see this in the theater when I was 10. It was my favorite movie for many years after.
One of my favorite movies from my childhood, along with Home Alone, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, and Sandlot.
I love this movie. I went to go see this for my 16th birthday. RIP John Candy. Yes. This was loosely based on the Jamaican Bobsled team.
If you liked this one, youll love Eddie the Eagle. Its set at the same Olympics and theres even a mention of the Jamaican bobsled team in there. I think youd love it.
The real footage from the crash is brutal, how they didn't break their necks is unbelievable. This makes me cry everytime I watch it ❤
Yeah, this movie is awesome. It's been forever since I saw it. John Candy was such a treasure. So many movies of his are part of my childhood. In the city I live in, Winnipeg, there was this little restaurant in my neighbourhood where he'd eat everytime he was in town. He was gone too soon...
Feel the riddim, feel the rhyme
Get on up, IT'S BOBSLED TIME!
“I SEE PRIDE!! I SEE POWER!!! I SEE A BAD ASS MUDDA WHO DONT TAKE NO CRAP OFF FROM NO BODY!!!
Junior Bevil-
One of my favorite scenes. 😭🤣😂
I wore this tape out when I was a kid, such an amazing movie!!!
Movie had me crying. The underdog team with the real spirit. It's all that really matters. Underdogs will always get a view from the top in the end.
The ending will make you stand up, cheer and cry.
Everyone watched this live on tv! This movie is a family favorite my kids watched it all through their childhood and now we will watch it with our grandchildren. This movie never gets old and defies time. GREAT FAMILY MOVIE!
This movie was HUGE when it came out! ❤😊
I'm so happy to see this reaction! This fish out of water team trying and working so hard was such an inspiration to me, and I went out and bought the soundtrack to keep those positive vibes❤✨️
This is based on a real story. It happened. As a Canadian it makes me proud it happened in Calgary. I miss John Candy.
When the Olympics were really the Olympics. The world’s best amateur athletes competing for the pride of representing their countries. Cool Runnings is a fantastic movie and is the late John Candy at his best. The movie captures the spirit of the true Olympic Games.
"I SEE PRIDE! POWER! A BAD-ASS MUTHA WHO DON'T TAKE NO CRAP OFF OF NOBODY!"
Every now and then, I will just randomly say this to myself. It makes me laugh, but I also use it as a little pick-me-up, too.
Based on true story, actual footage, and the TRUE Spirit of the Olympics.
RIP John Candy
There’s always something special about a film that ends with a photograph.
An absolute classic. Love this film!!
