- A few days ago, American Airlines retired their remaining MD-80s and ending the aircraft's 37 years of service for the airline. Being such a crucial aircraft for the airline and country, especially in its early days, I decided to put together a little tribute for them featuring my best clips of them. Featured here is a variety of AA MD-80 action from various airports such as Dallas, their former home base, Nashville, Louisville and Houston.
Without further ado, I hope you enjoy!

So long chrome livery, you will live in the hearts of avgeeks forever. Splendid tribute mate, double thumbs up for the retired Mad Dogs :)
It's not only the MD that disappears, it's the end of an iconic aircraft-family that has dominated the skies in earlier days: Starting with several DC-9 versions and going via the MDs to the 717 (which couldn't keep up with the success of the earlier versions). It has been the backbone of many airlines shorthaul fleet, before the 737 and A320 families have taken over. Great to see a nice selection of this nowadays uniqe and elegant aircraft!
You're absolutely right. It has been a huge backbone in the industry and its very sad to see another airline (and very iconic airline for the MD80s at that) bid farewell to them. Not many maddog operators left now. Glad you enjoyed the selection of these jets that i managed to get while they were around!
Great captures of the mad dog mate, sad to see them retired. They served American for an amazing 37 years and I'm sure leaves a lot of Aviation folks out there with memories.
Thanks mate! There's plenty of memories of these old jets, shame new ones won't be created :/
Amazing tribute to the AA MD80. One of the planes that remind me of my infant life! we will miss the AA MD80!
Thank you so much! It sure will be missed
What a wonderful way to pay tribute to this beauty 😍 ! ❤️ed the Mad dog's.
Thank you so much!
Never flown aboard one, but saw many land and takeoff from DFW in the years past when doing airport spotting. They could have been nicknamed 'Heartland Expresses' for all the use in the US Midwest. Great tribute Melbourne Aviation! 👍
Thank you so much! Yes, they were hugely common at DFW, gonna be a very different place without them there :/
Bye bye Mad dogs. Will be surely missed.Great video Matt
They sure will be missed. DFW especially won't be the same without them.
one of the first planes that i have flown in my life (that i remember) and will always be cherished forever in my memories. farewell N7514A (1997-2019)
One of the best AA Super-80 tributes I’ve ever seen! Awesome job!
Amazing content! Never got to see the MadDog, though love it a lot. RiP AAL MD88s.
Thank you so much! Its a shame you never got to see it, they're a classic jet :/
HD Melbourne Aviation i wish i could; in my country, which is Bangladesh, there used to be an Airline named United Airways Bangladesh and it operated the MD-83 along with GMG Airlines, but, they both got bankrupt and out of service and never came back since 2014-2015. I started doing plane-spotting from 2017 and fully from 2018, so i missed lots of rare exotic birds that visited DAC before. I wish i could do it before. :( I hope, one day, when i’ll go to USA, i might see the MD-80, but it will be completely retired at that time. It’s a shame for me that I didn’t even see Biman’s last DC-10 as a Bangladeshi, where foreigners from other countries saw it being flown for one last time in 2014.
I remember when these were all so common. Being in AUS, we were the busiest non-hub for the MD80s. They’d depart every hour!
Great farewell video. Those MD80's will certainly be missed.
You always do a great job. Thank you
Nice thumbnail of the MD80 and the American Flag!
HD Melbourne: Your work is so good and I really enjoy watching your videos. This was a fitting tribute to a great airplane. Also, nice touch ending the video with a shot of the plane taking off into retirement. Well done.👍🏻
Thank you so much! Glad the tribute was fitting for such an honourable jet!
The non-redundant horizontal stabilizer is one of the safety features of this aircraft. ;P
Fantastic work.
Thank you!
it's very nice , beautiful and.....!!!!! thank you very much!
It is a beautiful plane.
I grew up 5 miles away from the PVD airport and still remember hearing those reverse thrusters loud and clear after they landed. They were LOUD ha ha.
Some of the last low bypass beauties
Sadly
Amazing video
Thanks mate!
HAIL THE MAD DOGS
Nice tribute video. 7:48 Is the guy talking here Daniel Shaw? He's an Aussie who does storm chasing here in the US in the spring. The voice sounds a lot like his anyway.
Very Nice Airport
It is indeed!
Most beautiful landing 8:32
I miss the heritage livery. Like if u agree!
I actually got a (pretty terrible video) of one of these leaving John Glenn a few years back. I sadly never got a good video of a Delta Mad Dog before they were retired due to COVID. I did get a couple videos of Delta 717's leaving John Glenn. Not even those come in anymore. Man I miss these things.
Muito triste saber que o MD-80 não voará mais pela AMERICAN AIRLINES.
I wanted to see the md-80 have the new livery when it flied:(
Adieu, md 80!

Farewell AA MD-80s. (1983-2019)
Gone but not forgotten
What a shame this wonderful bird has to see an end. The airport scene will never be the same. They should have modernized her MD8X. She's too much a part of aviation history to end.
Beautyful planes but best place for MD80 is ground not air.
