  • Today marks the end of an era in aviation. The last American MD-80 has taken its final revenue flight to Chicago from Dallas, and has now landed in Roswell where she and other siblings will lay to rest. Definitely a sad day in aviation, but at least we have the memories. Thank you, Super 80 for 36 years of service.

    End of an era. Most of my commercial flights I've ever been on have been on mad dawg's or another virtually gone from US airspace aircraft, the Saab 340. I'll miss these things, lots of memories.

    In the 80s I made about a dozen flights on American MD-80s from DFW to Santa Barbara via Bakersfield. The flying experience was like nothing else I experienced. The most fun part was taking off at both Bakersfield and Santa Barbara because of the short runways. The acceleration was exciting and the rate of climb so steep that it felt like an elevator.

    Wow! Definitely an end of an era! I remember plane spotting MD-80s since I was a kid in the 80s at my home airport of PDX. They were, at the time, the quietest airline during take off and reverse thrust. My dad flew on them often and I have lost count on how many I flew on. My dad said that he always felt he was being launched into space because of the high climb rate.

    Great video! I have seen many different airlines that have used or still use the MD-80. Not only are they loud during takeoff but they are also a great sight to see and fly on, too bad American airlines has suddenly decided to stop using their MD-80s. The only question I have is why are they no longer using their MD-80s?

    i hope delta will retire the md-90 in 2030 at least. Soo sad to see the silver bird go so easy. It made AA survive yet they massively retired them around 2016. They should do airtours or keep one instead of scraping all of them. Some of them even started at TWA for instance. :-( Sad day for me

    • @LeppAviation
      @LeppAviation  5 лет назад

      It is unfortunate :( Delta is retiring the MD-88s next year, and I suspect the MD-90s won't be much longer after that. I suspect the 717s will stick around for another decade.

      Delta is unfortunately retiring their MD-88s next year, so that will be the last of the passenger JT8D aircraft. The 90s and 717s should be sticking around for a little bit longer though.

  • @Satoshi9801
    @Satoshi9801 5 лет назад

    Never had a chance to fly one of these. Closest I've been on is a 717.
    Hopefully I'll be able to fly on one with Delta before they get rid of theirs, but it's unlikely. I don't think they fly them out of Phoenix.

  • @michaelchamberlain1441
    @michaelchamberlain1441 5 лет назад

    You have to admit that aircraft had issues with the corkscrew which control the elevator and me as a passenger not being able to tell if they had service recently that was just my main issue

    • @LeppAviation
      @LeppAviation  5 лет назад +1

      That wasn't an aircraft flaw, that was a maintenance issue. Alaska had extended periods in between maintenance and mixed different greases to lubricate the jackscrew, thus causing a reaction to wear the screw quicker.

    • @LeppAviation
      @LeppAviation  5 лет назад

      Well it's a bit different for the A380. The only reason Emirates is retiring theirs is because they like to have a young fleet. For others, the reasoning will be the fact that 4 engine aircraft are too inefficient compared to the twin engine wide bodies.

    • @LeppAviation
      @LeppAviation  5 лет назад

      From what I heard, they flew the aircraft all the way until their mandatory checks, but I guess it made more sense financially to retire them rather than spend the money on the checks to keep them around to compensate for the MAX.

  • @QuickBurn70
    @QuickBurn70 5 лет назад

    All 23 remaining AA MD-80's were flown to Roswell on Sept 4. One from ORD, 1 from STL, 1 from TUL.. the rest from DFW. Wonder if I could get one of the flap panels and turn it into a conference table :)

  • @davidharris2519

    AA should have kept them around at least till the max mess is fixed what will replace them in GRR

    • @LeppAviation
      @LeppAviation  5 лет назад

      From what I heard, they kept them as long as they could until they had inspections that would have cost more money to keep them until the MAX was back rather than retiring them now. And as of right now, the A319 is replacing it on the DFW-GRR route.
