    @JacobDeadman Don't matter what guitar you use, for the most part I think Bradley played an IBANEZ S470. Also for reggae style it's very common and very helpful to play using upstrokes.

    You can actually call this both ska-punk, ska and reggae... the other elements around what he's showing here will define the genre more closely for you. This is the skat sound he's showing here, which is the fundamental guitar sound to all these three genres.

    Don't worry about upstrokes or downstrokes with reggae...it's about feeling the "riddim" and playing it with soul...Bradley Nowell played mostly downstrokes, but I prefer upstrokes.....it's all about how you feel comfortable doing it and what kind of sound you like.

    I guess the standard issue loop pedal would be the Boss Loopstation; think he has a video about it there somewhere. I use a Line6 JM4, pretty good, it also has effects and an amp modeller built in too, great little thing. Was E250. Invaluable for practicing, you really should consider getting one.

    Lots of old ska guitarists played all down strokes. It gives it a different tone, but it's not bad or good. Just different. It can have a percussive attack too. You just have the really hit it.

    'Quit trying to make music sound all tantalizing and mystical'...marty is making quality guitar playing easy for thousands of people not tantalizing them with out of touch technical riffs which im sure he can play but doesnt post. You dudes knockin marty got it all wrong, reggae is supposed to be something uplifting and positive. So just burn one and chill.

    I don´t understand how the subject is reggae, and instantly some people sees it as an opportunity to bring up weed.. How inconvenient as it might be to hear, it is not about that in this lesson. Although, I don´t mind smoking a spliff from time to time. Just to let those know whom are easily offended, that I am not trying to be an "&#..
    It was a great lesson. Good stuff!

    As always top vid!!
    Possibly a daft question but what is the gear you use to record and play back instantly, so you can jam with yourself ....(hmmmm?!#?......prob should rephrase that....anyway)
    Marty does it with the baseline in this vid, but he has also used it on many others
    Any idaes anyone?

  • @bassiehd
    @bassiehd 12 лет назад

    @GozerTheGozerian EDIT: This might all just be a misunderstanding. Maybe when you're talking about playing the guitar on the 'upstroke' you really mean playing it on the 'and' beat (which is 100% correct), while I'm talking about playing that 'and' while stroking DOWN with the pick, rather than playing that 'and' while picking UPwards like many guitarists do who are uneducated in reggae. If this is indeed the case, I apologize.
