Thanks to my test & tune pit crew, Casey and Curt, for taking tire temps and pressures to help dial in the new setup!!
Significant changes for 2024:
- 255/40/17 Falken RT660 on 17x9
- Ohlins DFV Road & Track coilovers with off-the-shelf 8k/5k springs and valving
- OEM airbox (no more noise maker intake!)
- FAL420 cooling fans (OEMs were dying)
- EBC yellowstuff brake pads

Great vid, driving and comparison to the ND. The ND seems to have slightly better low speed grip and much better 2nd gear dig where as once the rx8 is in the revs I think its power and higher speed handling edges the ND out. You did great in the slalom. I think I was over slowing at the mid section.
Agree with your observations. ND has serious torque and corner exit accel. And weight with 245s and slightly better rubber (RE71S) helps it in steady state corners
@@rx8matt Much lighter and shorter wheelbase also and that helps much with agility.
@@giorx5 short wheelbase helps with the tight sections... but i assume the ND is a little snappier if you start to loose the rear end.
@@rx8mattI drive an rx8, wife drives an ND. Can confirm, the ND holds no hands when the back end steps out.
Re71rs > Rt660 probably accounts for half the difference 😆. But if that's an ND2 the low end acceleration stomps the rx8. Nice driving all Around 👏

How are you liking the new setup? I was originally looking at ohlins but the OTS rates were soft and the Goodwin Racing rework is as much as a set of Penskes lol. Also curious how a deer can take out only your trunk?...🤔
the new setup is awesome, it's nice to have knobs again so i can try to tune corner entry behavior. mid corner and corner exit feel much better (less understeer), and with additional front rebound the car is more stable under trail braking. i like compliance. good for wet or bumpy conditions. and the rx8 suspension geometry is so great, a little roll doesn't hurt you much. so i've always been a fan of letting the suspension move and work. The deer destroyed the windshield and left a variety of scratches and minor dents all across the top of the car, must have hooked a hoof in between the spoiler and trunk. the trunk already had some rust so it's a good excuse for me to pull it off and practice my paint skills.
Hey Matt, nice driving as always. What made you decide to go back to the 17" wheels? Just curious as I am going from 17's to 18's this year.
Hey Brent. have you bought the 18s yet? if not, mine are for sale! ;-) honestly, it's trying to find the perfect balance between corner grip and acceleration. my 18" setup took a slight hit on acceleration and had a slight edge in cornering grip. and the 18s ride more firmly, and the roads near me suck. so the 17s are a hair peppier and a hair nicer during daily commute. and tires are cheaper.
I did already buy them, unfortunately. The only reason I got them was to fit over a bigger brake caliper. Otherwise I really liked the 17s. I don't think my talent level is high enough to make use of the nuanced differences.

I like these rates. Near perfect balance. Good compromise between smooth dry pavement and wet bumpy pavement. I stick with the softest suspension I can get away with
Hey Matt, Dope video as always. Just wanted to ask you how you'd recognize if an RX8 had good compression without a compression tester as you seem like the perfect person to ask. I'm looking to buy an RX8 with 49,000 miles. he's taken it to track days, some long distance driving (to tracks) but mainly has been driving it for it's intended purpose. he has always premixed it since he's owned it (for the last 3 years). it seems to start just fine. if you were to buy one what checks would you do to make sure it's healthy? Thanks
You won't truly know the engine health without a compression test. But if it starts quickly cold and hot and will pull strong through the revs in 2nd and 3rd then it should be fine for the time being. RX-8s will run well with pretty low compression as long as the ignition system is fresh. Some RX-8 engines are toast at 50k miles, while others can make it over 100k without any problems. The main things I would look for are modifications. The fewer the better.
Additionally, I would avoid any RX-8 that doesn't look like it has been well looked after. Other components will eat up your budget if they haven't been kept up with, i.e., the radiator, transmission, and suspension. All those components are getting pretty old even with the S2 RX-8s.
my car has "low" compression (about 7.0 @ 250rpm). the low end torque is a little lacking compared to a fresh engine, but at high rpm it feels pretty quick. i honestly don't put too much stock in compression numbers, unlike almost all other rotary guys. sure, it's a valid measurement, but even low compression rotaries can drive strongly. i generally look for healthy oil consumption, no coolant burning, and that it hot starts easily. even my car with low compression hot starts easily. you do need to ensure the ignition system (plugs, coils, wires) is healthy, as well as the battery and starter, so if all of that is fresh it should start well when hot. otherwise i'd plan on a rebuild.
and also slightly a joke, but not a joke, i can turn my engine over by hand using the water pump pulley. so if you can't do that, the car has to have SOME level of compression! you can also park on a hill in gear with no e-brake and see how easily it tries to roll away...
