At 100k, anything original in the cooling system and any original cat are really suspect and failure prone. They represents the biggest threat to your engine. Replace.
I also own an RX-8 I have had mine almost 3 years it is my daily driver along with my truck in that time I have only had to do one "major repair" if you could call it that oil cooler lines. I also premix I use cheap but still brand name two stroke oil and I have a clean oil feed adapter on top of that. Cheers to all the RX-8 owners out there
FYI, I own a 2008 40th Anniversary Edition RX8 (only 1000 made like this in the world) . I bought it new in 2008 and now it is insured as a Classic Car for 150% of what I bought it for new in 2008, full value, no depreciation. I have owned seven rotary Mazdas since the 70's; one RX3, two RX4, all three generations of the RX7 with two of those RX7 modified by Racing Beat for the track. I easily have over a million rotary miles on street and track . Yes I have upgraded and improved my RX8, cooling modifications with Koyo-Rad radiator, Pettit Racing closed system, Racing Beat hoses, low temp thermostat, oil cooler low temp thermostats , low temp fan control, upgraded water pump, ; Mazdaspeed CAI, high performance BHR ignition coils and wires, upgraded starter, performance Cat and mid-pipe from Rotary Performance, BHR clutch pedal assembly, Series Two fuel pump upgrade, new clutch and engine (from Mazda warranty, no cost to me) and a few other things. I will be keeping my 40th Anniversary Edition RX8 forever. Wish I could have kept them all. Nothing drives like a rotary. FYI, I use 5W-30W non-synthetic oil and yes I pre-mix. Cheers and best to you.
I religiously used Idemitsu oil and premix in my Rx8 for the past 2 years going on 3. it really does not matter about some brands just matters about maintaining oil changes and pre-mixing. I do not want to argue about the 20W50 oil choice. Coils pack upgrade asap, trust me. PLEASE DO NOT START THE CAR AND TURN IT OFF WITHOUT LETTING IT WARM UP. A quick guide should come with every Rx8 these days to let people know how to operate and maintain these vehicles.
There’s still no evidence premix does anything more than foul up spark plugs, cats and gunk up Rotors.
Good video, I wish there was more coverage of Series 2 RX-8s to see if the stories are similar. I have a 2011 stock GT that's just over 40k miles and it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. I mentioned selling it for a different more practical vehicle to my wife and she basically told me no because of the smiles.
Favorite TD vid yet
Great video with lots of good content.I know everyone has there own idea of what works best for there RX-8 but i will say that no one will argue that keeping your motor cool with cleaner oil is a must. Between me and my wife we each have a FD and each a RX-8 so we know the importance of these motors. The RX-8's are a much better daily driver and cornering cars over FD's. As for those new to Rotory world and RX-8's just start with cooling, like thermostat, radiator, and oil cooler for starters. Also check that both your fans work. Then Sohn adapter premix setup and always premix even with that system too. I haven't done any content on our builds. We really should have but we are not really about videos. We are from the Orlando FL area so hope to see some of you out there.
PS- don't buy cheap parts , take your time and buy right.
I honestly bought this car cause it looked awesome and it was cheap...I went down the rabbit whole of "what is an RX-8" and let me tell you...I had seconds thoughts.... ended up falling on a MINT condition 2004 Rx-8 with about 17k miles ..bought it in 2016..and its been amazing ever since... never had any problems .. of course I baby it... and only drive it in the summer...but I hope ill have it for plenty more years to come...
If you take care of them they tend to do ok
Be sure you have done all the Mazda recalls (free at any Mazda dealer) and you will want to think about replacing any Series One RX8 fuel pump with a Series Two fuel pump. The Series One fuel pumps will fail from high load, heat, and leave you stranded. The Series One fuel pump is way under-engineered. Change that out with a Series Two pump . Cheers
This happened to my 04 about 10 years ago, at about 85k miles.
Look like car for me. Great video. Thanks
I run Ams saber pro, high octane, and never shut it off cold. Let it warm up until it's at op temp and then drove 3-5 min under 5k rpm then I romp on it. I am currently running oem spec oil will be switching to 10-40 I'm in Ontario. Already have the Bennett built coils, next step is thermostat, 3 gauge pod with coolant, oil Temp gauges and then midpipe. Just got the car late in the year so it was just feeling it out and then started research. Great cars to drive definitely need to be ready to pull open your wallets if you want to either go fast or stay reliable. Go get a loan if you want both 🤣. Oh and gas mileage. Yeah, these cars make my truck look like a prius.
Feeeed the.. beast?
Could probs just wrap the bonnet and roof black to improve the look on the cheap.
Thanks for the video. I have heard the RX-8 is similar to a stretched NC Miata. I would love to tinker with one. Need a 6-car garage...
Man we could all use a 6 car garage lol
Dang. Luis left out all the bits about me arguing with him about why he should get one. Lol we should have done a video about both the 8s would have been cool lol
Maybe in the future, youll get your turn
Buying this car was the best decision I’ve made.
I was there for that 🤣
Kswap ftw
Lfx swap
@@TreadDepthChannel that's a good one too.
Both are strong options
Kswap is less effective vs ls similar weight more power and tq out of the LS and fits better believe it or not lol. The k requires a lot of sketchy hacking. REW or LS imo for the cost of swapping.
@@btownballer27 ls swap the world
Can I get one just to drift
Not the easiest car to drift, doesnt make a ton of power
Best handling and not to heavy
Absolutely illegal in Australia mod wise
Oh yeah
@TreadDepthChannel
No steering wheel airbag and catalytic converter could not register road worthy
Sure theres more lmao
