- President Trump is offering around two million federal workers to resign and be paid through September. Some Democratic lawmakers are pushing back against the buyouts, claiming they aren't legal. CBS News Digital politics reporter Kathryn Watson joins "America Decides" to break down the move.

Our government is about to be privatized. And if you want to know how that is going to turn out, look at some of the cities that tried that, especially in the early 2000’s. None of the cities that tried that are doing it currently. Business is not the same as government. Government does not make a profit, at best you want to break even. Business wants to make a profit, and if they think they won’t, well let’s just lay off some people. Whenever business types take over, the first place they look to cut is personnel. The reason for these staffing reductions is so called savings, which I would bet my house, will be countered by the huge tax breaks the oligarchs will be receiving. These firings/forced quitting is to save their salaries to use to balance the Oligarchs tax cut.
Again, straight out of Hitlers playbook. Shot gun executive orders ( too many to decide which one to fight) people become overwhelmed and give up.

The odds of those workers getting what they’re supposed to get? Christ, it’s astronomical. Trump’s list of screwing human beings is over fifty years long!!!!!

It's a threat, period. If he is going to fire federal employees, why is he threatening them with the second email? DON'T DO IT! How would they receive unemployment after September if they don't find a job because they willingly left their position?
Not to mention the very limited time to accept. It would be a serious decision affecting health insurance etc. This smells like Musk firing people from Twitter.
Companies in this country have done this for years! You leave you get a package (it's called a separation package). If the feds can prove that an employee committed "theft of service" then the employee is in big trouble.

IF he FIRES them for NOT going to the office to work, they receive NO unemployment.
Unemployment only gives you a very small amount of your regular salary.
HE is offering their FULL pay for 7 months.
That's way more than unemployment would give.
Unemployment is 26 weeks pay at 80 percent this 32 weeks pay at 100 percent thing is went everyone returns to the office efficiency will automatically rise as the workers have no distractions like at home so efficiency rising is going to lead to lay offs this is a good solid offer for anyone with less than 5 years government employment because firing anyone with less than 5 years costs the government nothing because your pension and benefits are not yet vested so they'll save not having to do that which will save a few billion is expenses and anyone with less than 10 years service might consider the offer if they can't get thier goal number they'll start investigating people's finances for extra employment income people's social media accounts for time stamps to see when posts were made and propably remote access your hard to look for mouse jiggles programs as your work laptops are federal property no warrant is needed alot people should consider theese measure cause anyone caught defrauding the government will propably be given the option of forfeiting thier pension and benefits to avoid prosecution or be prosecuted and if convicted be incarcerated or at have to sign an admission of guilt that will affect future private sector oppurtunities and still have your pension and benefits stripped I personally know a state congressional aid who was convicted of an offense and was forced to serve prison time probation and sign away thier government pension benefits and insurance over accounti.g errors some of theese cases will be outright fraud once investigated and I except outcomes will be similar

All news should start with email reads “ Fork in the Road” which what Elon Musk wrote for his twitters employee such a slap in the face and so childish
Funny. That's exactly what they used as the title for the fed employee email today.
Does how Elon worded those emails really matter? He proved that ~80% of Twitter employees were not adding anything of value and got rid of them, and the company has evidently been fine since. Perhaps it's the same situation with Federal workers.
I can only imagine how horrific the meetings are between Trump and his billionaire buddies as they gleefully rub their hands together while they draw up plans on how to exploit our country! They are evil! God help us all!
Nothing was answered in this video.
Exactly. CBS is Fox News Light. This was a terrible video. CBS is too lazy to interview AFGE--the fed employee union or anyone who would tell the truth--that Trump offered nothing.
Of course not, the email just came out a little over 24 hours ago, it’s going to get dragged through court for a while. Nothing being answered here but it is important to spread awareness on what’s going on with the federal work force.

Unless he never intends to actually pay them and they forgo unemployment benefits if they voluntarily quit.
Don't quit don't take the package he's putting all y'all into a trick bag
The offer is not only for work from home workers, it’s for all federal workers
No... it's not. It was sent to every federal employee excluding national security agencies.
What's really odd about this is how they are circumventing the agency heads by contacting employees directly. It's like the president of a company telling an employee of the company that he can quit tomorrow with 7 months pay without letting the employee's manager know. It's very unconventional and unprofessional.
This is nuts. There are thousands of hired remote employees that never had a VA medical facility as their duty station. They are bing told they might have to move their families etc.. there isnt space in medical facilities for all these employees that by law were hired to work remotely.
Most people who work for the Federal Government are smart people, not dumb enough to fall for this terrible offer, even if it is legal and ethical. They would get 7 months pay in exchange for their lifetime pension.

How does this not violate the Federal Labor Relations Act of workplace intimidation and coercion? They are literally trying to intimidate and coerce you into resigning with promising to confer or conferring any benefit (such as appointment, promotion, or compensation), or effecting or threatening to effect any reprisal (such as deprivation of appointment, promotion, or compensation)?
Uh this is not the first time the government has bought out workers. All this is is giving you an out if you don't want to work there.
The way I see it this will get rid of the ones that don’t really want to be there. Then you only have employees that are committed.
Next Trump and Voight will terminate the Retirement Benefits! Usually you need about 30 years of service to earn an annuity (pension) Those mid-career won't want to resign as they would forego their pensions!
Why wouldn’t everyone accept it if they can reapply? They need some sort of blacklist for people who take this so we don’t just pay for a vacation

She did not really have any clear answers. It seems like there should be a definitive way to determine whether these buyout offers are legal AND whether the government will be obligated to pay these employees who opt out until September AS proposed?
And... you have your answer to your pondering in your statement.
The reporter did not have any clear answers because they don't exist. This is now trumpland--UNTIL WE TAKE IT BACK. tRump is a conman so there is no "definitive way to determine" anything (that's what con-men and criminals rely on) the void of any "definitive way to determine" means that it is NOT able to be determined and therefor NOT legal, NOT guaranteed, and NOT to be trusted.
If you want to know how to deal with criminals and conmen you cant look for positives (i.e. Definitive proofs) you must be able to see negatives (what is missing, where are the holes). If it isn't there something is wrong. You don't trust that it exists, you trust that it doesn't exist.
So if all FAA controllers take the workforce buyout, the country will run as normal. Sure this makes sense,

All FAA workers can't work from home. You have been schooled pumpkin

Oooo. How many employees at the FAA got these emails?
Well now they know how it feels when lots of people lots their jobs during covid, while they kept theirs.
So because you lost your job, they should lose theirs? Very mature sentiment.
Numbers will be poor because they made it so vague. Musk can just say that they offered but no one took the bait so if employees don’t come back, their positions will be dismantled.
Are there any reporters at CBS with political savvy? The question of does the President have authority to spend money for executive purposes, rather than use the money as Congress appropriated, is a good one. The answer is, of course, no. The President's duty is to execute the spending of taxpayer funds as Congress dictates in appropriations. The real question is, which Congressional Committee is going to call the Executive Branch to come forward and explain the misappropriation. The answer, for at least the next two years, is none of the Republican Committee Chairs are going to stand in the President's way.
He ain't paying anyone who takes the bailout
It's not a buy out. It's up to the individual agency if people can go on administrative leave. And did Congress provide funding.

@@RB-bx7dv Its a "deferred resignation" the term buy out is not used, but it's not directly allowed by the government to pay over $25000 in a severance package for an employee which this would go over by many times for each employee. It is the opportunity to walk or get fired . What would you take if you've been taking in thousands a month and not doing anything from home vs going in office all week? You'd walk with a buyout va getting fired and investigated.

But, federal worker here, you are being unfair in generalizing, demonizing, your fellow Americans as lazy, shirking, grifters. Is that all we ALL are? My agency has teleworked to a greater or lesser degree since 2011. We can do that because we only work with data that is entirely digital, and not with people except via phone solely in some cases. Never in person. My team only works with other federal employees, and we keep the USA's financial records proper and tidy. Our agency has never complained about productivity dives. Our agency knows telework works and they have the data to prove it, but will they dare stand up, show it, and suggest a more sane approach. My teammates and I know we are more productive at home. We've already been moved back into a hybrid split of onsite time and at home time, obediently to the Republicans push of a year ago. Removing telework will cause those with knowledge to retire if they can (brain drain), and younger people to go to a private business that still sees the value in telework. Less stellar minds will be in charge of agencies. For the sake of a few agencies with bad culture, and bad apples here and there, my agency has to take this longstanding thing that works fine away from conscientious (fellow taxpayers) who DO, without question, work. It is just plain wrong for that blanket attitude to be held. It is illogical as well. Nothing is that simple. Federal worker does not equal bad, unreliable person.

If you mean offers for early retirement those went through Congress. This was a way to squeeze DEIA folks out and avoid the expense of a reduction in force (RIF) and to try to dodge lawsuits. Unclear whether agency budgets which are set by Congress can be used to pay people not working for 8 months.
Inflation is linked to national debt-without our leaders creating innovative debt repayment strategies, the debt is only likely to grow, not shrink, even after firing all these federal employees.
The entire federal workforce is around 5% of the federal budget
You’re pretty much correct. The entire federal workforce costs about *$500 billion annually*, roughly *7%* of the *$7 trillion* spent last year. They need to think of more solutions than just reducing payroll.

There is no buyout. Federal workers who work from home and do not want to come back to the office can continue to work from home if they resign now and defer the resignation to September. CBS calls it 'paid resignation' but the workers continue to work while being paid.

Private companies do this all the time, what is the difference with government employees?
Government employees are protected under the telework act of 2010 and for Trump to make an EO for mandated return to office or get fired is illegal.

@@Stoich827 130B is nothing compared to the budget, though it's actually closer to 200B. Just the current deficit is 1.8T.
People don't seem to understand the scale of the government's finances. Three quarters of federal spending is non-discretionary - social security, medicare/medicaid, and interest on the debt. Of the remaining quarter, which is the discretionary part of spending that congress wrangles every year, half goes to the military. That part's only set to increase, by the way. The remaining eighth covers _every other function of the government._
If you literally ended _every_ service and laid off _every_ civilian employee you would barely cut 10 percent of overall spending.
