Silly little production detail. At 8:56, when Frampt asks me if I took away his nom-noms, you might have noticed his mustache-thingy flopping around more than usual. I realized I had a way to make them appear bouncier to heighten the silliness, and the means of pulling it off was even sillier. There's a debug option for forcing ragdoll corpses on enemies. It won't kill them, but they'll collapse as if they're dead. You can then turn that back off, and enemies will sort of pop back up into whatever position & animation they're supposed to be in. That snapping back into place gives momentum to those dangly bits, so you're looking at him shortly after coming out of ragdoll. There are ways of seeing this in-game without doing that. Quitting and reloading next to him allows you to see it IIRC, maybe after the transport cutscenes too.
0:03 "Today I have a quicker episode topic" Just goes to show how elaborate these have gotten, that 24 minutes is considered quick now, when the episodes were under 10 minutes when this series started out.
A bit of a weird one that the flowchart doesn't account for - if you skip the estus flask at the start and play through the whole game through to ng+, then do the estus skip again, the estus flask will appear in the chest, even though you never had it in your inventory.
I was just about to comment that. When I used Cheat Engine to set my game to NG+7 at the start with a fresh new character, Oscar didn't give me the Estus Flask so I never had it in my inventory, but the chest had it.
@@Pantagana Ah so this is interesting! King Bore told me that something was unique/different about how the Estus spawns and how it should probably show up in the chest without even getting it prior, unlike the rest of the items. I've found that this isn't the case normally, doing the Estus Skip does prevent the chest from having it. But watch some NG+ weirdness help jump start it. Maybe in the process of taking certain items away from you after clearing a NG+ cycle, they wanted some backup protection, making sure that wouldn't happen to your Estus?
Really neat observation that probably explains something I didn't mention in the video, because I couldn't get it to work! I responded to the other reply to you here with a bit more info. :)
@illusorywall Thank you! I think your theory is right - the only other explanation I can think of is that the chest offering the estus is triggered by speaking to Oscar in ng+. There's something in place when you talk to Oscar that checks if you're in ng+ and doesn't give you the estus if you are - perhaps arriving in Firelink still not in possession of the flask after this check causes the chest to think you've lost it?
@@BusinessSkrubI think you need to buy everything once he mentions Logan going AWOL. He says that he won't go to look because he wants to ensure you have learned everything from him as repayment for saving him.
A bit of extra clarification on Good Vagrant spawning with the chest: You probably don't want to drop the ring in Firelink Shrine itself. I mean, you can! Other players will get the resulting Drift Item bag where you dropped it in Firelink. However, Drift Item Bags are supposed to turn into Good Vagrants after being passed 10+ times online and this fails in Firelink. It'll stay as a Drift Item bag for every recipient it ever gets, because Firelink doesn't have any actual Vagrant spawn locations in the map data. So REALLY using the Firelink Chest to seed Good Vagrants is a little more tedious than it looks, like the second one shown in the video. If you want it to be effective, you need to leave firelink to a proper level, drop one of the rings, then warp back to firelink to get the ring back, etc. Edit: Also, shoutout to the invader at 5:34. They were cosplaying as the Dirty Colossus from Demon's Souls! Super creative build and I'm so happy they got to be my invader for this video. It was a completely random player. If you saw my most recent short, that was me messing around in Sen's Fortress while waiting for that invasion to happen: ruclips.net/user/shortsgPACCHJBokY
22:10 the offering box gives you all prayer beads from enemies that despawn after a daytime change (for example the seven ashina spears in ashina reservoir after killing 2 of the following: guardian ape/corrupted monk/folding screen monkeys), this works for every miniboss in the playthrough but only for bosses that despawn at some point (if you do shura ending you won't find the beads from fountainhead palace/3rd invasion minibosses). If you don't obtain the prayer bead from a miniboss then the boss respawns (the most common example is okami leader shizu falling to his death and dropping nothing, reloading makes him respawn) The offering box also gives you missable items from shops (phantom kunai or gourd seeds for example), this doesn't cover things like sugars/upgrade materials/sen purses etc. ❤
@@ArcRay20 I got lucky! I was hosting for over an hour, close to an hour and a half. I was perhaps slightly under leveled for Sen's Fortress (SL32, so invader couldn't be higher than 36) but didn't want to mess with this old character by leveling up. So I was patient, and FINALLY this person showed up. Super cool. Someone had actually offered to help and they were on their way, but Dirty Colossus got in first.
Fantastic video as always! Extra note for any modders out there: the "Force Character Treasure" event may as well be called "Silent Instant Kill". It works on any character, rolls for any/all treasure drops as normal, and essentially seems to set their state to dead without awarding any souls and (for normal enemies) without the death sound. Enemies with ragdolling will start already ragdolled on the ground, and if you use it while the map is loaded, they just silently collapse in front of you. It will also trigger any event flags marking that character as dead, so it generally can't be undone once used on important characters!
In Sekiro, I've used the offering box to retrieve prayer beads I've missed on multiple occasions. You can miss prayer beads when Ashina Castle is invaded by ninjas, and again when the Castle and Outskirts are set ablaze. If a prayer bead shows up in the box, you have to pay for it, though.
You can also get it to spawn in the box if you kill Black Badger like an idiot because you thought he was another rat NPC and started swinging the second you saw him.
the phantom kunai spawns in there too, i think it has something to do with not getting fathers bell charm before killing the divine dragon... i think, my dumb ass missed it after all.
Double KO’d on the stray demon in a recent DS1 playthrough and lost the titanite slab it dropped. So frustrating! The internet told me to check the Firelink chest, of course.
In dark souls remastered, npc items when dropped stay there at their original location but by leaving the world via invasion or summon, you can duplicate the item by picking up at the last message. Interestingly the Anor Londo fire keeper also works with this but has to be lured down the elevator in Anor Londo! The only way to get to +7 estus before NG+
Only way… to get +7 before NG+ and without invading Lautrec? Because there are already 4 fire keeper souls you can pick up and 2 you can kill firekeepers for, you just need to let Lautrec kill the Firelink Shrine firekeeper and then invade him, get her soul, and that’s +7.
@@joebobby1412Yes, but you can only upgrade your flask by talking to one of the firekeeper NPCs and asking her to upgrade it. Since getting all 7 souls in one game cycle requires killing all firekeepers, there will be nobody left to perform the final upgrade.
I think, the main reason why this type of mechanic made a comeback in Sekiro is because unlike previous games, Sekiro changes the entire areas completely (multiple times even) throughout your playthrough, making some of the items you might have missed inaccessible without warning. Also Sekiro has a lot of key items responsible for upgrades. For example, Phantom Kunai is probably one of the more common items players will see in that chest. Without this mechanic, not only a specific upgrade would not be possible, but it would also lock other upgrades further on.
That's what happened in my playthrough. You meet the merchant who sells it to you in hirata but if you kill him there he won't spawn in the outskirts to sell it. (He was looting the burning ruins of Kuro's estate, I thought I was being the good guy)
@@SensiFrazier How is murdering someone a good thing? Besides, it's not like Sekiro is any better considering he loots everything of value he sees. It's quite hypocritical to think of yourself as the good guy for murdering someone who does the same exact thing as you. You were looting the same burning ruins as him.
It's kinda funny to me when a player kills an NPC and then cry about it later when they actually need said NPC. Like, why are you even crying about it lmfao
The way I personally knew that indictments were meant to be single use is Oswald the Pardoner’s dialogue when you buy one. “Stocking up on indictments? How honorable of you!” Paying 200 souls each time I got killed by an invader would be hard to justify to new players so I think that’s why they made them infinite use
Finally it makes sense that it's the invaders where the reload method doesn't work, I'm always knocking Leroy to his death and bemoaning never getting his loot. Thanks for helping me finally understand this stuff!
I'm always in awe about how you're able to come up with a new topic for these videos. I've first played Dark Souls around 11 years ago and I've been loving it ever since, returning to it every one in a while. I have some extra game knowledge compared to normal Joe who just completed this game once and then never returns, but ever since you covered the obvious stuff that needed explaining, like poise, miracle synergy, etc., I always find myself wondering what you'll be covering next, cause I for sure don't even know what's there left to cover. This time, I completely forgot about the existence of this box, because I never really used it. Keep up the good work!
A more liberal translation for the box would be "game progress fail safe". That is how I would interpret it based on how both 進行 and 救済 are used in programing talk.
Illusory Wall, all your videos are so fucking good. I'm a Patreon subscriber but I still wanted to say all your videos are fascinating. Hoping the minor DS2 revival that's ongoing leads to some more DS2 content but I'll happily watch every upload!

An interesting thing I found about the offering box in Sekiro is that if you go out of bound in the Demon of Hatred reflections of strength, go to the idol that normally teleports you to the Demon of Hatred and use it, and then get out of bounds again and go to the offering box, it will be filled with prayer beads and other items as if you had missed them, and you can buy them (although you probably won't need them at that point).
Although Blackhat Badger has been brought up already in the comments, theres another quirk with him that some have noticed. Killing him or progressing his quest line will stop you from using his shop, making the anti-death blow appear in the offering box. The Iron Fortress(loaded umbrella) is also in his shop, but instead of being moved to the offering box it is instead just placed on the ground at his original location(if I remember correctly. I beliveve this happened to me in my most recent playthrough). I have also seen prayer beeds in there and these are most likely from mini bosses located in ashina castle whose original spawns get replaced with different enimies later into the game.
4:01 i would like the chest to save items in case I miss the nest in Undead Asylum's item spot. I remember some people dropped items in the wrong nest before. Some important items like the Manus soul would suck to lose lol
2:37 holy crap the Monolith Burger song! I always feel like I was one of a very small number of people who played this game, and part of an even smaller fraction that really enjoyed the game's OST. Now I feel just a little less alone!
I went looking for someone who had already posted about the song. It's always nice seeing appreciation for games of old. If I could make a request to illusorywall, sharing your sources for the music you use in the description of the video. I always appreciate being able to look up music I like that is used in videos.

More fascinating work from you. I enjoyed this video immensely. I’m ashamed to say this but as an initial Dark Souls player since October 2011, I had no idea this was even a thing. I know the chest and where it’s at but I never knew it could ever contain anything. Hell yeah dude, you never disappoint. A video about some obscure mechanic I’ve been unaware of from one of my favorite games and I’m captivated for 24 minutes. Big Ups man, thank you so much!
Thanks so much! Hearing this kind of feedback is super encouraging. Sometimes I wonder... is this too specific/ niche? But if I can surprise at least one person who's been playing since launch, it makes it all worth it.
@@illusorywallhonestly, i first played DS1 not even a year ago, and even before I ever played it I watched your videos. I've always been fascinated by stuff like this about video games, hidden mechanics, hidden areas, unused areas etc, such as your video about the map and how gwyndolins long arena is under the original. Very interesting, even to someone like me at the time who hadn't even played the game.
@@illusorywall i’ve never played a from game and i find these videos super fascinating, especially when they’re niche!! you do a really great job in pulling back the curtain of game design and code
Don't worry I had no idea what the chest was either before this video 😂 Great video as always! I just thought the chest was part of some elaborate covenant or obscure questline or even a secret that requires very specific things to have anything in it. Also since it starts open I thought it was part of some very elaborate new game cycle shenanigans. Like you have to do things in NG to make the chest have something in NG+ etc
I never knew this was even a mechanic to begin with. I think a universal box that collected every single item that was not picked up would be a super cool mechanic in these kinds of games
If you ever explore in depth Elden Ring niche mechanics, would you be able to explain how its decided where glowing skulls with runes are placed into the world?
there was one time when one of those things just randomly fell from the sky while i was roaming around west liurnia, and i distinctly remember that because i distinctly remember not being near any of the high places it could've fallen from, like the moonlight altar like, even if i had been, i'd still be curious about what could've possibly launched it from wherever it'd spawned over to the open sky area i was at, considering it'd have to be something like a npc loading in and knocking it away with substantial force. but no, its velocity was almost entirely vertical and i wasn't near any sort of overhang, so i really have no clue what could've happened beyond it just literally spawning in the sky an extra fun bit is that i genuinely thought it was a ruin fragment or sanctuary stone as it was falling and assumed this was just some exceptionally rare flavor event i hadn't witnessed before, so i was momentarily baffled when torrent crushed it underhoof and i ended up with a golden rune instead
Pretty sure those (as well as normal skulls and things like tumbleweeds) are just procedurally generated based on player location. I’ve caught them falling to the ground when I’ve swung my camera around quickly before.
In Sekiro, I remember when the finale started (that part where you lose access to a bunch of warp points and have to go through the first area again with different enemies) the offering box suddenly had a LOT of things in it, including the Loaded Spear, which I hadn't collected yet
For Sekiro's box, I've only ever found one thing. During my first playthrough, I helped a certain friend to find someplace to rest. Just kinda left the area after the fact. Checked back a few hours later and was surprised to find the Hidden Tooth in the offering box.
2:05 finally, someone who isn’t yelling about “MiSinFoRmaTion!” and how much he hates it, but who instead remembers that being “misinformed” is just being ..you know, WRONG. something that can describe ALL OF US from time to time. instead, we have a man calmly explaining how/why people got things wrong and explaining how things actually work without directly insulting people. and if i recall, he’s had no problems admitting when he himself has gotten things wrong as well, and corrected the record. kudos to you sir. 👍
Because this isn't really a harmful one It's not like checking the chest does anything, but if someone says "yeah just throw those NPCs off a cliff and use the chest later" then they should get shit for it.
11:45 slightly related? At Avelyn in Duke's Archives, I died after opening the chest but BEFORE I picked up the chest and Avelyn disappeared when I reloaded the area
The only time the offering box had something in it for me was, during the Ape Duo fight only one of the prayer beads was put into my inventory instead of two. The other one was in the offering box
For sekiro I haven’t ever seen anything in there since I’m a collector of everything in these games but on my first play through the lady butterfly kuni spawned in there since I killed the patches npc at the mansion and also from watching a 100% speedrun any prayer beads from at least ashina castle were in there since the speedruner skipped most of the prayer beads and the castle changed after owl/divine dragon
As far as I can tell, Sekiro’s offering box works in that whenever there is a key item you are no longer able to get once you have progressed the game past certain game states such as prayer beads, prosthetic upgrades and such, they appear in the box for a price. Like when the interior ministry attacks and lights everything on fire there’s a lot of places where certain minibosses and items will no longer appear. So in order to prevent players from being locked out of them, they’ll need to pay the money
In Sekiro I’ve found single purchase techniques such as mid air death blow, and prosthetic upgrades like the umbrella in the shrine, and I believe they were originally obtainable from merchants that were no longer usable in my game because of story progression
For the Offering Box in Sekiro, I recall picking up a prayer bead which belongs to the Lone Shadow at the back of Ashina Castle, where the monkeys and dogs are. I think it happened because defeating the Divine Dragon will cause him to despawn as the Ministry fully invades.
It would have been neat to have an NPC ask for a quest item with the intent of stealing it. Then return after resting/ dying/ quitting out and coming back he comes back, upset that you'd "taken it back" somehow, and have him be near the chest or something.... Idk. As a way to introduce the chest's mechanics to the player.
Super interesting! I love these Dark Souls Dissected videos. Just crazy obscure and esoteric mechanics explained in detail. As far as I'm aware, Sekiro's offering box lets you purchase lost guaranteed drops from minibosses who have despawned, such as Prayer Beads from early-game bosses after the Interior Ministry's invasion, important vendor items you never bought, like the Anti-Air Deathblow text from Blackhat Badger after he moves to Senpou Temple and stops being a vendor, and possibly Key Items that you never picked up. I've been meaning to do a run where I never get the Shuriken Wheel to see if it shows up in the offering box after you defeat Divine Dragon, when you can't reach it any more. Maybe I'll get back to you on that if/when I ever get around to doing that.
22:15 I believe the items that can be obtained from the offering boxes in Sekiro are the prosthetic upgrade item, healing upgrade items, beads and anything that cannot be farmed if you lose them to the story progression (some area will be blocked after a certain point or change completely that you are no longer possible to get them). It also includes Mini bosses reward item, chesses that you didn't get but no longer available later. Those will be in the box, the one that you can buy but didn't and no longer has access to will be in the box at the 1.5x price if I remember correctly. The feature is utilized by speed runners to skip killing minibosses or detour to get prayer beads, gourdseed and instead buying them back at the offering box later for the all beads category (not all bosses and minibosses). But one thing though. I don't remember if you kill the merchant before he sells the phantom kunai upgrade would drop it in the box. I remember getting it in the box at 3000 in one of my playthrough long ago after he was dead but I didn't kill him and already progressed his quest
Having played Dark Souls 1 numerous times over the years, both PtDE and Remastered, I had no clue Griggs could be found in Sen's Fortress. Thanks for always blessing me with new knowledge about my favorite game!
15:12 Ah, fond memories of when I was doing a rapiers only build and big ornstein decided to yeet himself out of the room and fall to his death. Pretty important ring for a rapier build!
One time I was doing an all achievements run and decided to kill Logan in his last merchant location in the archives (that really dark library). Right before he died, he rolled into this "triangle" of objects and dropped the white dragon breath sorcery in an area that was completely inaccessible. Spent quite a while trying to roll my way over there before I though about Lautrec and had the bright idea to try a quit and reload... Rage quit the run off of that lol 21:45 well would you look at that...
I've always used the chest to repeatedly pick-up & feed to Kingseeker Frampt, the Cat Covenant & Darkmoon Blade Covenant rings. Just an easy way to get free souls everytime I swing by Firelink Shrine. Thanks for breaking it all down!👍
I have in fact gone out of my way to get the leo ring, then forgotten to pick it up, and missed it for the playthrough, and the same goes for stray demon titanite slab too... Worth noting that in remaster you can drop any item you want with glitches so the chest does have some funny duping potential, this doesn't apply to switch though, switch doesn't have a glitch for that
18:48 You mention here that Kirk is guaranteed to drop his sword and shield by the time you battle him in Izalith, but is that true? I've always read that he's one of the few cases where his items are never a guarantee.
It is true. I think the issue is that he can invade you in later locations WITHOUT having defeated him at prior locations. So I think this creates some miscommunication where players say "I fought him in Izalith but he didn't drop them!". As long as you defeat him in all three locations, something called the "cumulator" (I'm not making that up 😅) keeps count and guarantees the drop. You can't get multiple copies, though, so one other potential source of troubleshooting is having successfully picked up his drops earlier, forgetting, and then expecting them from Izalith.
@@illusorywall Has this always been true? I had also always thought that his drops were the only truly random missable items in the game, ever since I read that over a decade ago. It made sense, since (like you showed) invader loot is exempt from some normal rules. Was the failsafe patched in for him at some point, or was it always there from the beginning?
I killed the mimic that drops the very good carving and it also dropped symbol of avarice because I hadnt gotten it in the archive electing to go to Oolicile as soon as I got the broken pendant . 22:17 The only thing I recall getting from that box was the Anti-air Deathblow Text. I imagine that was due to Blackhat Badger's questline being progressed before buying it.
I think I was trying to see how quick I could get through Sekiro or something once because I forgot to grab the mist raven and axe prosthetics before going back to the hirata estate the second time with the "Father" fight. I might be misremembering, but I think it locked me out of collecting them, but they showed up at the shrine. (I didn't mind missing them. When I'm trying to go fast I don't use many prosthetics)
Day 4 (I think?) of sleeping with your videos! because of The Game Awards I didnt sleep on the night, so Ill sleep now. I will watch your ds2 inv. walls video later, I am so excited about it! As ds1 walls is one of my fav videos
From my recollection, Sekiro's offering box will replace items you've missed that got removed due to plot progression - e.g. Prayer Beads that were held by minibosses in Ashina Castle. However, from my own experience the offering box does have one critical exception: If you miss collecting the Father's Bell Charm, the offering box *will not* collect items from Alternate Hirata Estate.
@illusorywall on my first playthrough of unpatch sekiro, day 1 or 2, I got the shuriken ninjatool from the offering box AFTER the invasion happened and the opening areas you revisit change.
In Sekiro, when playing through the game quickly and not necessarily fighting every miniboss, it is pretty easy to get a few prayer beads to spawn in the offering box. This happens (as far as I understand it) because certain events that happen in the game cause gamestate changes. One of these is picking up the last of the three items needed for the fountainhead insense, which causes hirata estate to progress to the Owl (Shinobi) fight. there is a missable miniboss that exists in Hirata before this state change at the top of the Stairs. If you perform the change before killing him, his prayer bead is available in the box. I believe there is another hirata estate change that happens after the divine dragon fight, and another prayer bead available in the box.
I think it's worth noting how Twin Maiden Husks in Elden Ring serve part of a similar purpose by letting you purchase items you otherwise could have missed. It won't retrieve items you've obtained and then lost, but I guess they had more trust in themselves in not letting it happen to plot critical items?

A bit of extra clarification on Good Vagrant spawning with the chest:
You probably don't want to drop the ring in Firelink Shrine itself.

If you don't obtain the prayer bead from a miniboss then the boss respawns (the most common example is okami leader shizu falling to his death and dropping nothing, reloading makes him respawn)
The offering box also gives you missable items from shops (phantom kunai or gourd seeds for example), this doesn't cover things like sugars/upgrade materials/sen purses etc. ❤

So I was patient, and FINALLY this person showed up. Super cool. Someone had actually offered to help and they were on their way, but Dirty Colossus got in first.
Monkey Island's tavern music... 👍😎🤟
Props to the guy for cosplaying a boss almost no-one would call their favourite from that game lol.
The anti-air death blow can spawn in the offering box if you progress the Ashina castle to another state without talking to black badger
You can also get it to spawn in the box if you kill Black Badger like an idiot because you thought he was another rat NPC and started swinging the second you saw him.
Hey thank you for mentioning this. I was just thinking of this because of the subject matter and I bet others were too
the phantom kunai spawns in there too, i think it has something to do with not getting fathers bell charm before killing the divine dragon... i think, my dumb ass missed it after all.
@@Blazberry_Yaint I doubt you're dumb. You played Sekiro after all and that is a purely intellectual game if you get past even the first part
This is not a sekiro video dudes
How beautiful is it that we're all still here analysing this game after all this time
Like people do with games from the 80s?..
Double KO’d on the stray demon in a recent DS1 playthrough and lost the titanite slab it dropped. So frustrating! The internet told me to check the Firelink chest, of course.
Just got burned for my slab from stray demon. Fuck
@@joebobby1412 then you wouldnt have a firekeeper to upgrade it so you can only use it in NG+
ah fair enough. @@resin2092
@@joebobby1412Yes, but you can only upgrade your flask by talking to one of the firekeeper NPCs and asking her to upgrade it.
Since getting all 7 souls in one game cycle requires killing all firekeepers, there will be nobody left to perform the final upgrade.
Almost forgot the obvious: player trade. The dropped fire keeper soul can also be picked up by another player during a mp session.
@@Accrovideogames lmao thanks for the psychoanalyzing someone killing a suspicious guy in a game like it was real life, very helpful
@@AccrovideogamesBet you think the George Floyd riots were peaceful too buddy, lmao.
It's kinda funny to me when a player kills an NPC and then cry about it later when they actually need said NPC. Like, why are you even crying about it lmfao
INDICTMENTS ARE INFINITE USE?!?!
I looked it up, and the Wikidot confirms it. I'm STILL learning new things about this game years later!
The way I personally knew that indictments were meant to be single use is Oswald the Pardoner’s dialogue when you buy one.
“Stocking up on indictments? How honorable of you!”
Paying 200 souls each time I got killed by an invader would be hard to justify to new players so I think that’s why they made them infinite use
Thanks so much Chris! I'll be getting back to DS2 -eventually-. I do have some other stuff lined up first, but I'm excited to get back when I do. LordRadai's debug tools for DS2 have come so far, there's all sorts of stuff to look at and demonstrate in ways that I'm glad I haven't gotten to those topics yet.

That's really interesting, thanks for sharing
I liked when the note of the song playing in the background synced with the item pickup sound effect at 1:08
2:37 holy crap the Monolith Burger song! I always feel like I was one of a very small number of people who played this game, and part of an even smaller fraction that really enjoyed the game's OST. Now I feel just a little less alone!
I grew up with an Amiga and had Space Quest IV on that! It's a very nostalgic part of my childhood. :)
I went looking for someone who had already posted about the song. It's always nice seeing appreciation for games of old.
If I could make a request to illusorywall, sharing your sources for the music you use in the description of the video. I always appreciate being able to look up music I like that is used in videos.

Eyy, I have one of those icons! Been a while since I've seen one of those :D Still using mine all these years later on discord along with my partner! Commissioned them back in 2019 I think :P
Don't worry I had no idea what the chest was either before this video 😂
Great video as always!
I love your Dark Souls content. It's crazy that you're still making videos about topics I didn't know existed.
I never knew this was even a mechanic to begin with. I think a universal box that collected every single item that was not picked up would be a super cool mechanic in these kinds of games
I love how this community is still making discoveries about the mysterious inner workings of what's now a 13-year-old game.
I think Dark Souls has achieved Super Mario Bros status on content about its inner workings 😄
Still pumping out the most interesting "new" Dark Souls content. Love it
If you ever explore in depth Elden Ring niche mechanics, would you be able to explain how its decided where glowing skulls with runes are placed into the world?
That's suuuper niche. I would love it to know. hahahah
Yes this! Those things are an enigma and I must know what their deal is
Probably a specific distance around the navmesh
there was one time when one of those things just randomly fell from the sky while i was roaming around west liurnia, and i distinctly remember that because i distinctly remember not being near any of the high places it could've fallen from, like the moonlight altar
like, even if i had been, i'd still be curious about what could've possibly launched it from wherever it'd spawned over to the open sky area i was at, considering it'd have to be something like a npc loading in and knocking it away with substantial force. but no, its velocity was almost entirely vertical and i wasn't near any sort of overhang, so i really have no clue what could've happened beyond it just literally spawning in the sky
an extra fun bit is that i genuinely thought it was a ruin fragment or sanctuary stone as it was falling and assumed this was just some exceptionally rare flavor event i hadn't witnessed before, so i was momentarily baffled when torrent crushed it underhoof and i ended up with a golden rune instead
Getting another dark souls dissected so quickly is an absolute joy my brother
I played Dark souls so many times and I didn't even know this mechanic existed😮
I've beaten this game maybe a dozen times and never knew this chest existed
For Sekiro's box, I've only ever found one thing. During my first playthrough, I helped a certain friend to find someplace to rest. Just kinda left the area after the fact. Checked back a few hours later and was surprised to find the Hidden Tooth in the offering box.
what a cool mechanic! always glad to see more dissected videos from you
Thank you for continuing to document and detail these games all these years later.
It’s so nice to have this built catalogue discussing DS in such depth.
we are blessed with another illusory wall video, thank the darklord
2:05 finally, someone who isn’t yelling about “MiSinFoRmaTion!” and how much he hates it, but who instead remembers that being “misinformed” is just being ..you know, WRONG. something that can describe ALL OF US from time to time.
instead, we have a man calmly explaining how/why people got things wrong and explaining how things actually work without directly insulting people. and if i recall, he’s had no problems admitting when he himself has gotten things wrong as well, and corrected the record.
kudos to you sir. 👍
Because this isn't really a harmful one
It's not like checking the chest does anything, but if someone says "yeah just throw those NPCs off a cliff and use the chest later" then they should get shit for it.
Regarding the Sekiro chest, I vaguely remember getting prosthetic tool materials after killing an NPC who sells them.
Always happy to see a new video. It is nice to see how these games work behind the scenes
I love that you keep this series up! Another great video!
11:45 slightly related? At Avelyn in Duke's Archives, I died after opening the chest but BEFORE I picked up the chest and Avelyn disappeared when I reloaded the area
Your cameo in Mathew shezmen’s latest video was great 😂
The only time the offering box had something in it for me was, during the Ape Duo fight only one of the prayer beads was put into my inventory instead of two. The other one was in the offering box
hiddem gem of a youtube channel helping scratch the itch we all felt with dark souls 1"what is going on in this game"
Liked in the beginning and still subscribed. I doubt that will change.
So in order to prevent players from being locked out of them, they’ll need to pay the money
love these videos and i especially love when you have stuff like this that clears up stuff.
I love your videos Illusory Wall! It's so nice to hear how dedicated and passionate you sound when you talk about dark souls ❤
It's not a Balder Side Sword. It's never a Balder Side Sword.
The balder leggings for all.
You're fucking kidding me. I have over 600 hours in this game and I didn't know you could become a dragon

BAM! It's illusory wall! great video
Rage quit the run off of that lol
21:45 well would you look at that...
10:35 Wow I never knew that you could do that. That is the first time in quite a while that I learn somthing this neat about dark souls.
Another masterpiece dissection. Great stuff man.
I've always used the chest to repeatedly pick-up & feed to Kingseeker Frampt, the Cat Covenant & Darkmoon Blade Covenant rings. Just an easy way to get free souls everytime I swing by Firelink Shrine. Thanks for breaking it all down!👍
Always a delight to see you upload.
I have in fact gone out of my way to get the leo ring, then forgotten to pick it up, and missed it for the playthrough, and the same goes for stray demon titanite slab too...
Worth noting that in remaster you can drop any item you want with glitches so the chest does have some funny duping potential, this doesn't apply to switch though, switch doesn't have a glitch for that
As always great content! Your videos detailing strange and obscure mechanics in the FromSoft games are my kind of strange addition.

You mention here that Kirk is guaranteed to drop his sword and shield by the time you battle him in Izalith, but is that true?
Tbh, i just looked at that chest and thought “i dont remember opening that chest. It must not have been important.”.

I love the disection videos, BUT the video you made on Gimmick is still fresh in my head and I really want more like them, I though it was very good! I literally played the game on its entirety because of that video plz make more ❤
22:17 The only thing I recall getting from that box was the Anti-air Deathblow Text.

@illusorywall on my first playthrough of unpatch sekiro, day 1 or 2, I got the shuriken ninjatool from the offering box AFTER the invasion happened and the opening areas you revisit change.
this game still has discoveries and new video content coming out 13 years later lmoa
Wow this was much more interesting than I had imagined
Thank you for including the music citations -- i was gonna go crazy wondering where I heard the (space quest) music from when I recognized it!
Always interesting how much we can still dig up in DS1.
Looking forward to your next part of DeS vs DeS Remake
I never knew what that chest in Firelink did! Thanks for the info man!
I wonder how many pages of lore theories have been written online over the years about the issue at 20:15.
22:13 Any miniboss that you haven't killed that then disappears during the course of the story will have their drops in the Offering Box.
"The Firelink shrine lost & found chest"
Me: "There's a lost & found chest?"
I think it's worth noting how Twin Maiden Husks in Elden Ring serve part of a similar purpose by letting you purchase items you otherwise could have missed. It won't retrieve items you've obtained and then lost, but I guess they had more trust in themselves in not letting it happen to plot critical items?
played this game since it released on Xbox 360 and I never knew this chest even had a use
