I used the patch command which you can customise in the first instance it's in the command menu and I set it to alt F. And in the example I used with the four curves I used loft which is L and it connects lofts selected curves in the order you selected them. And
When you have a closed shape (indicated by it filling in with blue, if it's flat), you need to select the curves that make up the entire border, and then click the Patch Hole button in the bottom right (or via the F menu, or by the 2024 version shortucut Shift+J).
