- Ocean Ramsey swam alongside a Great White Shark off the coast of Oahu (Hawaii) earlier this month. Since then, a heated debate has come up. Should Ocean have touched the great white shark? Is it safe for her to? Is it in the name of conservation?

She’s an “expert” who misidentifies Deep Blue and says she’s “guiding” it away from boats. A real expert would have researched and documented Blue’s unique markings to know the difference for identifying her. Second, her logic about touching and swimming with them seems eerily similar to Timothy Treadwell’s expert experience with Grizzly Bears. It is beautiful and interesting footage, but I don’t consider her an expert in anything except her own choices and personal experiences.
I think the problem is having the number of eyes on ocean Ramsey as she does on instagram. Putting a video of her touching the shark could encourage that behavior from other people and it is a bit reckless, keeping in mind we live in a world most people just don't give a shit
Yeah I agree. But one also has to admit that her stunt brought the more awareness to great whites and the fact that they're not mindless eating machines than ever before... I do think it would have been just as effective without her reaching out to touch them though.
I'm of the mind that she shouldn't have touched the shark because I think it will encourage others to jump off their boats to get close to "jaws." Sooner or later a great white isn't going to be in the mood to snuggle with a biped and it'll chomp down on someone, the media will respond in typical fashion and more sharks will be killed as a result of someones thoughtless bravado. As for Ocean Ramsey on a whole, I think she is doing amazing work in shark conservation and getting the message out to the public that these animals aren't simply savage, thoughtless, cold blooded killers but necessary links in the ecosystems to which they inhabit.
If she can add a few nominees for the yearly Darwin Award while bringing some sort of conservation awareness, win-win 🤷🏻♀️?

The line the other oceanographer's use; "Touching a shark will encourage others to try to touch them", to me, is disingenuous - I've been around the ocean all my life, and although I respect sharks, I'm not ignorant to the facts of:
1: What they eat (ANYTHING)
2: How they eat it (Those dinosaur teeth that rend flesh like so much tissue paper)
I was in awe, watching that video - but the very last place I would ever intentionally CHOOSE to be is in front of, near by, or "to the side of" a fucking shark the size of an oil tanker.

White Sharks are highly prey specific. They don't just "eat anything". Tigers, Bulls, not so much and are probably much more dangerous.

Thank you for clarifying that in fact that she implies she has a degree but actually does not. So Ocean Ramsy does not have an academic higher education in Marline Biology. I also searched this and found it disappointing that anyone would allude to this when in fact when in fact they did not actually obtain higher education via an academic institution. This is certainly an insult to anyone who really is a college graduate. Thank you for this !!! I spent A LOT of time underwater too, but that did not make me anything more than a fish pointer/dive master. For Ocean Ramsey to say she is a marine biologist is actually fraudulent.
Are you sure she DOESN'T have a degree in biology? Because all I know is that it is uncertain.

Agree with some of what you say but higher education does not mean too much these days. Real life hands on experience will TRUMP higher education sitting in a classroom alllll day.

Personally, touching any wild animal can always result in a person getting injured or killed. Wild animals may have predictable patterns of beforehand, but you can always come across one that gets pissed off for whatever reason
True. But would u rather get hit by a car? Humans are plenty stupid. Atleast if a predator such as a "Great White Shark" happened to eat this Marine Specialist, the risk vs reward would have been calculated. I mean... consider people who surf. We live "with" planet Earth... not "on" it.

Kind of reminds me Timothy Treadwell he loved the Grizzlies and didn't want harm done to them After 10 seasons a bear killed him and his girlfriend and when found they killed the bear.
i dont think protective film gets destroyed forever from touch. it feels like many marine biologists exagerate. this film for sure grows back otherwise underwater creatures would be full of deseases when they touch anything.
I agree, some marine biologists would have you believe that humans are the biggest toxins. I somehow do not believe that a touch from a soft human hand for less than a second can do as much damage as can rubbing against much harder objects or other animals. No need to fear sharks anymore, just give them the deadly touch 🙄
The marine biologists who criticized her were correct. Posting this video resulted in harm to the sharks who were feeding off the whale carcass. People showed up wanting to replicate the experience and the sharks left. Ocean Ramsey did not do this for the sake of sharks, she did it for the sake of self-promotion. Her message should be to leave sharks alone and not disturb them so that they end up having to leave a valuable source of food. The fact that so many people are ok with what she did is a problem.
Her name Ramsay is equivalent to her philosophy. Like Gordon Ramsay, you do a doc on shark fin soup and then being caught without a care hunting sharks. Ocean Ramsay is a capitalist pig and an embarrassment to RUclips uploaders.

Your psychic powers are make-believe. She appears to have a genuine love for the animals, and she at least claims to do those dives to demonstrate that the dangers of sharks can be mitigated to some extent through various techniques/approaches. It's possible to disagree with her methods without pretending to know things that you don't.
What degrees do you have to assert that the other marine biologists are correct? She is a marine biologist just because no one can confirm it doesn’t mean it’s not true.
I thought that touching fish is bad, because it destroys a layer on top of their skin which protects them from parasites. No idea if this is true, but generally I would not touch a wild animal. It‘s a matter of respect.
Yeah, she mentioned this in video and that's true as far as I know too.
If you look at shark skin, you'll see that's not really possible unless you were to rip off the overlapping scales.

eh.. have you read some of the comments on here? its in our dna to learn/do by example, also pushing boundries to quench the unknown.. the sad part is we do have the intelligence to do better but most do not.
Interesting topic, I believe that there are times when it is okay to handle Sharks but most of the time it shouldn't be done e.g if a shark is coming abit to close and you do the "push manoeuvre" on the snout, basically during times when it's necessary to do so never any other time.
Ocean Ramsy I personally believe is abit of nuisance tbh, she realistically doesn't do anything for Shark conservation other than get in photos to boost her ego and followers. Infact I can name a few occasions were her behaviour was infact detrimental to shark conservation. She has little regard for the space of these animals, you can see that by her and the 8 or 9 divers literally harassing that white shark btws not to sure if you know but white sharks often bloat to the size of a house when feeding on a whale carcass so there is no real way of knowing of that particular shark is actually pregnant, it's more than likely just eaten a heap of whale lol. But basically I think "wildlife influencers" need to put their egos aside and actually practise what they preach instead of posing for a photo on giving a heap of misleading information.

@@drdebocherry Actually I think you'll find that this guys pretty spot on with alot of what he says. She isn't technically qualified for anything she does other than diving and taking dives, she isn't a marine biologist as she hasn't studied (if she did she didn't pass) she has also done alot of questionable thing's around sharks, she's chased Sharks off of kills numerous times, she's put herself and other people and dangerous positions for social media clout, and has given quite alot of misleading and straight up false information. Most people in the Marine industry don't take her very seriously as she's clearly primarily involved in this for the image over the conservation, if nobody was paying any attention to her she'd just be another freediver.

I'm pretty sure Ocean is a marine biologist and has gone to university for years learning about sharks, she has stated so in interviews. Even if this is incorrect, she works closely with a team of marine biologists and is great friends with the world famous marine biologist Sylvia Earle, so I think she would've never touched the shark if there would've been scientific evidence that this could harm the animal.
I did try and find her official qualifications, and could not. This does however not meat she doesnt have a large amount of experience, expertise and connections to make her an amazing shark advocate.

Last I talked to her, she’s working on getting her PHD. But as of now, she does not have it nor does she have any official research out. She does tend to touch sharks when it isn’t needed & our community is mixed about how we feel about it.
J C I know her personally & to my understanding she has basic college degrees & is on the path to getting the PhD. We don’t talk about it much though so maybe when she talked about it she just meant she’s going for a bachelors right now. But it is something she wants

She's is highlighting the plight of the sharks. There intelligent majestic animals. We need sharks in the oceans. Sharks don't have hands so they use there mouths to test what it is there curious about.

Touching a wild animal in his own habitat is not the best idea... Divers and snorkelers are warned to not touch any animal under water. That said Ocean seems to really love sharks and works for their protection/conservation so if a video like that is going to open eyes and souls it will be awesome.
In 2019 there are still culling programs with nets and hooks that kill thousands of sharks and even more non target animals like dolphins, turtles, little whales, rays, and even marine birds. We all should be pointing out we don't want this shame and criticize this kind of practice way before Ocean Ramsey action.
That is an excellent point Marco! The big issues facing the sharks is indeed the shark culling programs, the 'shark safety' protocols along with massive industrial fishing. Her posts always include links to petitions to ban this type of activities, so there are positive effects from it.

@@OceanPancake well I understand that and I feel the same way to some extant, but from what I saw the shark was not bothered and she was very gentle. Im obviously not an expert, just going with what I saw.

Her touching them on her own time is one thing, but publicly displaying it to millions on instagram : thats the dangerous things. Unedicated people who try and copy her. I always feel as marine conservationists we should lead by example
@@OceanPancake I somewhat believe in natural selection, and if joe/jane shmoe think that they can walts up and touch one of the worlds Apex predators...well let's just say I dont have much sympathy. Still, I dont like it when people are bitten. BUT!!! If your that joe/jane shmoe, your kind of looking to get bit. And that I dont feel bad about. However I do see the other side. I’m not a doctor but I know not to inappropriately touch other human beings...OR’s study of sharks and efforts to save sharks is doing more for the species than arguably any other human. Any fool who equates that with wanting to go pat a shark because they saw an expert do it, is just that - a fool.

I am an avid wildlife conservationist and although I am a hunter and fisherman I agree with you on this. @@persephone2706, the shark she swam with was not Deep Blue. Deep Blue has a scar on her right side with black splotches on her underbelly, the shark Ocean Ramsey swam with and touched didn't have the same markings or scar.

I admire Ocean Ramsey's dedication and bravery. She is an amazing person. That being said, when I listen to her I cannot help but be reminded of Timothy Treadwell and fear for her safety.

Timothy Treadwell died in VERY specific circumstances and when several factors coincided at the same moment. It wasn't as simple as put usually depicts it.

Even if she was lying about that the shark was deep blue to get attention it's totally okay because she isn't trying to be "just" famous she is actually trying to save them. And just because she is getting so much attention everybody criticizes her for touching the shark. It's not just her, I see so many people who are touching sharks like tigersharks but nobody targets these people. I think it's just jealousy because she is famous for what she does and they are not 😂
She is definitely raising awareness about sharks, spreading shark love, and fighting hard against their culling. There is criticism because people fear she is sending the wrong message to lesser experienced individuals who would want to try the same thing. The tiger sharks you are referring to are mostly the ones being fed in the Bahamas and in Fiji, the only people who touch them are shark handlers specifically trained for it who wear extensive protective gear. @@OceanPancake that's called "culling the herd" or "survival of the fittest" the human race needs culling, by nature of course. It's a cold hard fact that people use their brain less( ie Stupid) as technology grows wider. If people are stupid enough to watch an EXPERIENCED diver touch a shark and think " gee I think I'll go do that" then PLEASE LET THEM. The stupid is thick and ruining the planets potential as a whole. CULL THE HERD save the world
@@terriec808 definitely one way to look at it. However it can also prove harmful to the creatures themselves. Such as this particular shark was pregnant and the close proximity and splashing divers could have scared her away from getting a neccessary feed
@@OceanPancake well now THAT'S a whole different way to look at that... Creatures are innocent we humans leave terrible damage in our wake.. I would think that the energy one emits interacting with such a large and potentially lethal creature would make or break an encounter. Calm confidence and experience is not something one "tries" so while I agree that Oceans videos give those mindless idiots ideas, I think what she does is beautiful and I think the interactions she has with marine critters have mutual acceptance between human and creature. The ability to communicate with another species is something that most people can't comprehend or don't believe extst.. Ocean Ramsey has that and that affords her a little bit of wiggle room. @@terriec808 While she knows what she is doing, she was leading a tour group of... at least 5+ people? In a lot of footage you see the splashing and excitement of everyone. As someone who has taken many tour groups, the energy from tourists seeing creatures is massive! She isn't alone in any of these situatuons, but instead has people around her which might want to copy her and a large group which would be disturbing the sharks. I truly appreciate the attention shes brought to great whites as not being killing machines, but yeah... definitely a discussion worth having
You don't need a degree in marine biology if you have the experience. Experience is everything. No indigenous people who live among nature have degrees - they know the behaviour from living among their fellow creatures.
nobody doubts that.... but one thing is to say you are a Marine Biologist... another is to say you have experience diving with sharks.... 2 big different things. I guess all of a sudden I can say I am an ingeniere 'cause I have experience building houses...? nope.

Also FYI indigenous people often teach alot of courses on outback survival, why do you think that is pal? Indigenous people grow up learning about nature from being taught by previous generations, passed down. Which is similar to what happens when you you go to a university to study and get a degree. You’re learning from other people’s experiences.
She is just reckless and self promoting. Swimming with and touching an apex predator is likely stressful or intrusive for that animal and one of these days she meet one that’s intolerant of her behaviour. Leave them alone.

Hello! Thanks for taking the time to watch the video. All the 'hate' I have seen has come from qualified Marine Biologists expressing their expert opinions about the dangers of the situation. Do you not worry that unqualified people would try and copy her behaviour and potentially get hurt?

@@Lionheart2323 Indeed, there are different approaches taken and most scientists do not post these images directly on social media. We can however discuss the impacts of that : giving the shark some good publicity is great!

Great points Katt! I have thought about this a lot and the place for eco/environmentally friendly practices within eco tourism and think the conversation really does lean and sway with a lot of balance! As someone who has always wanted to swim with sharks it's hard to say that interest stems from anywhere expect selfish reasons. There is so much room for growth within shark conservation, it's crazy!! Great video friend!

When you watch her interviews, she clearly knows the risks and respects sharks for the predators that they are. Her touching them sent a powerful message that they aren't just soulless savages...they are apex predators with their own reasonable behaviour and they have no reason to adjust that behaviour to us.
They are very much like dogs in that they have their own language and anyone wanting to dive with them must put in the effort to try to understand that.
Anybody stupid enough to watch the video and think they can touch them without relevant experience is just asking for trouble and only has themselves to blame.
They are not dogs, they are predators who are 100% capable of eating a person and do when they feel like it, the number one rule of interacting with dangerous animals, never leave weather or not you're in danger up to the animal. A shark has no emotional attachment to humans and food is not the only reason they might attack you, white sharks are territorial, ESPECIALLY around a food source and you are actively rolling the dice weather or not that shark is going to TOLERATE your presence. You wouldn't touch a tiger in the wild, you wouldn't touch a bear, they aren't evil, but they kill things for a living, and they do not want or need emotional connections with other species.

As for being a bad example to others, she has already stated that this work cannot be done without the accompaniment of experienced people and that each shark may behave differently in different waters. That's why she politely stated that the responsibility should always lie with the experimenter and that she shouldn't be held responsible for the loss of a limb.
And who cares about the degree, she implies everything logical depends on her own experiences about the sharks, whereas so many demonize it.
Perhaps you and the other scientists may need to find another way to criticize her..

Cool video, interesting topic.
I see respectful interaction with sea life as a wonderful and beneficial thing. I understand its an issue for purist conservationists. Yet, with all the indiscriminate hunting of sea animals, something needs to change if we're to save the oceans from unrecoverable degradation. To me, Ocean Ramsey shows us that humans can make a connection with even the most dangerous predators in the world. She is totally in their element, but they're comfortable with her rather than aggressive. Sure, they're in a food coma. But creating this connection with sharks - and helping others create a connection - will help people see that sharks aren't indiscriminate killers. And that we should respect the natural world.
By the way, at around the 5 minute mark, you say: "she is showing there is no need to be afraid of the shark." I would humbly caution putting words in other people's mouths. I say that b/c I doubt that's what she's trying to say. I think she's just showing people that she loves this animal, she respects the animal... and the animal feels that love and respect in some way.
I think this kind of human-shark love/respect/diplomacy is important in countering the portrayal of sharks as menacing, disposable animals, and will help to save the species. I certainly hope so.

No. How do you know the shark is comfortable? The shark had just gorged itself and was in a food coma. We've all stuffed ourselves at Thanksgiving and then laid around comatose. Also, how would you know if the shark was uncomfortable? You wouldn't. Sharks aren't people, you can't assume they're going to act as a person would when they're uncomfortable. House cats don't show their emotions so it's really hard to know when they're sick. If a house cat is acting sick you need to get them to the vet immediately because they usually only do that when they are dying or unable to function properly. I use cats as an example because we've all been around them and they're characters and have little personalities, how much personality have you seen from a great white? You have no way of knowing that shark is comfortable, I would wager that most wildlife wouldn't like being touched by something they're unfamiliar with

You then advise her not to put words in other people's mouths when she says "there is no need to be afraid of sharks" when obviously that's what she gathered from the encounter. I agree with a good deal of your sentiments but the notion that the "...animal feels that love in respect in some way" no. It's a great white which is a wild and aggressive species and has been for thousands, if not closer to millions of years, it's not a dog or a house cat that comes from a long line of domesticated animals. Her shooting the sharks from a distance and talking about them is enough - she doesn't need to put her own safety at risk or encourage others to do the same.

A little hand touching it will do nothing, if the shark was bothered it could eat all of them in about 5 seconds. Y’all, we are on the earth together, treat animal and human good but what is the issue with people wanting to touch wild animals? You take the risk of course and if you get bit, killed etc. that is on you. If a person watches was ocean Ramsey does and goes and does it and gets eaten they is their fault. An annoyed shark will snap it's jaws as a warning to back off, like a lion or wolf snarl. This one seems like it could not care less about dolphins or humans, only mildly curious about the boat. Down deep the human does not match the prey patterns in it's brain. If you touch it, it probably dismisses it as a remora.

The problem with that line of thought is that it dismisses everything we know about predator behavior. Yes we are not on the menu, but predators are unsuccessful most of the time. Their prey is fast and agile, and quite capable of getting away. So a shark that has been having a bad streak of hunting will definitely be more inclined to have a go at people who are slow and can't get away. There's plenty of evidence that great white sharks do attack people with the intention of consuming them. They aren't the only ones but they are the largest of sharks that do. Bulls and tigers are more likely to tear off a chunk and then leave. Some of the smaller sharks that rome in schools are almost piranha like. Doesn't make them evil, but it does tell us that it's much better to get out of the water when they are cruising the beaches.
People say that you're more likely to get struck by lightning, but most of those same people will seek shelter instead of being out in a storm. Sharks should be the same.
@@rustyreese4006 A shark is interested in fat not protein. A shark will often puke up flesh with low fat content, on purpose to have room for fat like blubber, seal or whale. To a large shark a dolphin or human is simply not worth the calorie burn to chase or eat. They can go for months without eating looking for a dead whale or seal gathering areas.

It's not the norm, but it does happen with every predator species, on land or in the sea. You probably won't get hit by lightning either, but are you going to ignore the storm and not take shelter? Great whites have attacked people with the intention of consuming them. That's a fact. It's rare that it happens. That's also a fact. It doesn't mean that the reports are wrong. And it doesn't mean that it won't happen again. The guy that writes books about it points out how rare it is, but he also doesn't advocate swimming in waters they are known to be in. He has a RUclips channel called sharks happen. You should check it out.

I think this is so typical the world attitude. Here you have somebody with a God given talent that isn’t waiting for a piece of paper to nullify what she’s made to do. And then there are those that have studied the law in and out and the ““ right and wrong and are so busy pointing the finger that they’re not actually doing anything good for anybody. I've been thinking about it a lot and it's really crazy how there was such an uproar about this, considering how many places in the world are killing sharks. Some land animals will actually abandon their babies if they smell human on them, so as amazing as swimming with sharks probably is, she looks a little mental "redirecting" as she calls it, with her hands up near their head/face/mouth. In my Point of View Ocean Ramsey are out there spreading a Message That The great white Sharks Are not a blood Thirsty Animals. She is trying to Prove it by Touching the Great white. I honestly appeciate what she did. We should all protect this beautiful Creature.
She can still prove it by not touching it, and thus not encourage anyone else to do the same. Great whites still aren't like a friendly dog or your sociable neighbor - they may seem docile at one moment but they can just as easily turn around and kill you the next if they decide to.

Ocean Ramsey should not have touch the shark, which was a shark called “haole girl” not deep blue. Deep blue was found and filmed on the Same day or something like that. I don’t know what credentials are needed to be a legit marine biologist but all that should matter is that she shouldn’t have touched the shark nor should she have even been in the picture. If her goal and focus is all about sharks then why does she need to be included in the video footage. Apparently there were plenty of people who returned to that spot the next day and none of the sharks even showed up. That means that Ocean Ramsey effectively scared off all of the sharks in the area, an area which was the only main source of food for all of the large sharks seen eating the whale carcass. I think she did it for the publicity and the IG followers inorder to grow her business. It’s all good to try and grow ones business but I don’t agree with directly contradicting ones morals about shark safety when she in fact did the quite opposite. She scared off the sharks from their feeding grounds, and if that shark was pregnant potentially could cause her to lose her babies.

Never touch the fishies!!!!!!!!. even in your open water class we learn not to touch marine life of any kind. there are a lot of things that can do you harm that we may not even be aware of like coral, so beautiful to see, but if you are scraped by the sharp edges you will certainly know the next time not to touch it. not to mention that we can do them harm as well.

There are rules for a reason it’s for the general public and you don’t need to be a marine biologist to know that the researchers hand is not going to be any different than ocean Ramsey’s hand touching the side of the shark for a few seconds. Her hand is probably less effective to the shark anyway because she’s been swimming around in the ocean and salt water for so long plus your hand is already wet since she’s underwater… She’s not pulling the shark out of water she’s not tagging it she is just touching it with a hand people need to stop freaking the fuck out and start doing something to better the world

Whether it be humans, sharks, dogs, cats, birds, dragonflies etc. If I am in the same environment as them and we notice eachother, I have the choice of either avoiding connection/contact all together, or openly offering contact (without expectation that it will be reciprocal as many creatures are timid for various reasons, yet many are naturally more curious and open). It is then the choice of the creature as to whether they come closer to receive/give contact. I am not going to chase a human/dog/shark to get a touch and fuel the ego if they have not accepted the invitation of connection/contact. Its not selfish or disrespectful to extend an arm for a handshake or hug to a human/creature you've never met before, it is disrespectful towards another creature to do that if they are clearly resistant to it. Noone is advocating to just dive into the ocean and expect every shark wants a pat or that they can't still rip people apart in certain circumstances. Can almost guarantee that everyone bashing Ocean Ramsey has never swum with a shark themselves. Be mindful and go out with a trained, EXPERIENCED professional who actually understands the creatures and environment and understands our inherent connection with all forms of life 🤙
Thank you for asking people to comment. First up I hate shark cages. They should be banned the whole idea teasing sharks with food for a photo pisses me off. Sharks that have seen this shit will associate people with food or possibly even worse.there has been no studies of that. I would like to see you professional guys including ocean Ramsay go swimming with the sharks without feeding them first before giving people advise about how to stay safe in the water with sharks that are hungry. I also believe it's up to the wild animal if they want to be touched because it usually takes a long time to earn trust with any wild animal and I would not recommend doing it.
Ramsey is doing great work. I would never swim with a shark as they can turn on you at any moment, but it is ones right to be a shark meal. It's like the guy whole studied Grizzlies and ultimately was eaten by one. Any time we are in the wild we are taking a chance of getting hurt or die. It life. Funny how the people who get degrees think they can put rules in place that allow only them to interact with wildlife. Anyone can study in or out of a university and become an expert, you do not need a degree to be an expert.
She is raising a lot of awareness and bringing conservtion to the forefront! Its very important work.

If you put yourself into a situation like that where you see a trained marine biologist and wildlife conservationist you deserve the consequences. It is indeed a very important message she is spreading, and all conservationists are happy to have such a public figure. There are just definitely downsides of these types of interactions, one of which is that there are many uneducated people in this world who will take this action as an invitation to copy it. That's why so often we are told to lead by example

@@macksharpe1513 he did indeed inspire millions, but I also worked with hundreds of people who are terrified of rays because of his death which happened because he was too confident and threatened their natural space. I deal with people who get panic attacks around sharks, people who support shark nets, and who think ocean Ramsey is crazy rather than brave and an inspiration. It's difficult to work in conservation :(

I mean some people are scared of getting vaccinations because they thing their kids will get autism, that's doesn't make vaccinations any less important. If science always went by the book nothing new would ever be discovered or shared. The problem is not the people doing the science and attempting to speak up for those who can't. It's the people who misinterpret information and fail to take the time to really learn something amazing. I understand where you're coming from but there will always be people who find another way to be afraid or refuse to learn about something like sharks and if seeing somebody as sweet and nice as ocean Ramsey at home with something that is presumed a monster doesn't make you second guess your feelings of these animals then I don't know hahaha. Some of us were around when Mr Irwin was killed while playing with a stingray. Anyone who needs to post themselves disturbing wild animals like that are just promoting themselves. Anything for a quick buck and lots of attention. I think its cruel and harassing to swarm the sharks with many divers and a camera crew. And I believe it may make sharks more territorial and more aggressive towards humans.

I don't understand why people can't just take pictures of animals? She seems just as interested in filming herself. There's vanity involved which can be dangerous. Overall I like what she's doing but wish there would be more of the sharks and less of her.
Very interesting video. I would like to just point out that Ocean Ramsey can't be responsible for the actions of idiots out there. She is putting a disclaimer on all of her videos not to replicate what she is doing. This is situation like with Steve Irwin. PETA and some biologists had a major issue with him catching snakes and crocs and touching them. He also didn't have an academic degree in conservation which in my opinion is highly overrated (I have a MSc in ecology myself). Degree doesn't make you at all more knowledgable than a person who educates him/herself and has years of experience. Both Steve and Ramsey had a much greater impact on regular people's perception of dangerous animals than any biologist I know. It is a fine line to walk when you are trying to teach general public that dangerous animals shouldn't be killed on sight and they are very beautiful and interesting and worth saving. It is a difficult topic as to where are the borders of what is should be allowed in interactions with wild animals and if any interactions are necessary. I have learnt first hand how important such interactions are to spread the message to general public when I volunteered in cheetah sanctuary where there were visitors brought to enclousers to interact with cheetahs although not wild ones I must say. That cheetah sanctuary was a major contributor to cheetah conservation in South Africa and all because it was bringing people closer to animals.
This is a very complex and debatable topic. It's all about the degree of intervention we should allow ourselves to have. First of all, the mere presence of a human being is already interfering with the shak, so let's not act as if diving is unnoticed until you touch something.
That being said, the effects of intervening can hugely vary depending on many factors. I don't think it's the same on land than in the ocean. Land animals have evolved alongside humans for more time and they are more likely to see as a prey or an identified threat. Fishes on the other hand, will mostly don't understand what we are and have less interest in attacking us. It's therefore less risky that they grow familiar with us, because they weren't refraining their attacks because of fear as sometimes happens with land wild animals.
You'd also have to take into account what the animal is feeling at that time and how it will react, or how it will be affected by being touched. Maybe it won't be harmful, maybe it will cause it stress. However body language is difficult to read in fishes, so one could argue that if you don't know, it's better to be prudent and not touch it.
It's also a very different issue if the animal we're talking about is a particular individual you know very well and you share a bod develeped through several years of study. In that case you may discover that the animal trust you enough to consent to be touched. This has happened in several cases with professional biologist living with a group of wild animals. However, this shouldn't be assumed of any wild animal and feel free to touch them whenever we want to.
And lastly, it is worth considering what effects will it have on the people watching. Will it really encourage everyone to touch random sharks as if there isn't any danger? Or maybe it will show that you can create an intimate connection with a shark, and that they're not bloodthirsty monsters? Maybe it will reduce the fear of sherks and depict them under a new light that invites people to respect them? Maybe she wasn't trying to communicate anything of this, but rather simply enphasize how incredibly big and great that shark was? Maybe it was indeed an irresponsible act made purely by selfish reasons and the desire of having a cool picture? All those things need to be taken into account, and we need to think how we can differentiate one type of action from the other so our intentions and our message are clearer when we are in a situation like that.
So in short, this is a very complex topic, and we would have to reflect about each situation one by one. But it's good to agree that the respect for wild fauna is an established top priority.

Touching the shark is a great way of showing they're not in a 100% aggression mode 100% of the time. So many people are convinced that the sharks are down there, blasting death metal and looking for a sinking cruise ship.

@@OceanPancake I speak from experience :). When i was 12 I was doing an open water scuba cert in Monterey Ca. On that dive where a nice little mass of seals. They're cute and playful, HOWEVER... every instructor I ever dove with made it a point that they are untrained animals and you're in their house. That point was missed on one of our divers, who couldn't fight the urge to reach out and pet one, his index and middle finger are now and forever will be half of what they used to be.
So in Oceans case, it's the 180. She's demonstrating that sharks aren't killers, while my dive partner demonstrated that seals aren't exactly cute and cuddly :)

Very interesting - I always understood never touch wildlife full stop - whether it’s in the ocean or on land - unless it is in danger or causing danger to others and you need to intervene (e.g. take it to a vet, free it from netting etc). I have heard of Ocean before - she seems to spark a lot of controversy as she isn’t part of the mainstream culture and is a bit of a hippie outsider - whether that is true or not I couldn’t say. Xx
I haven't heard of her being referred to as a hippie outsider yet. Interesting point. I have also always gone under the impression of not touching any wildlife full stop. I'm wondering, whether as in the case of Steve Irwin, it shows that these animals aren't vicious predators.

This girl is using Ocean Ramsey to boost her own channel. First go swimming with a 20 foot shark before you try to tell people what to do.

Vegan Diver Katt Ocean Ramsey is either massively brave or she is asking to be shark dinner. My guess is that she truly sees the sharks function in a strong, healthy ocean. For people to second guess what she did in the moment of being next to such a well known and huge set of teeth with fins is ridiculous. Just because other people might do something stupid after watching Ramsey with a shark is not a reason to attack Ramsey.
Darwin’s survival of the fittest applies to humans as well, let the dumbest humans among us do what they do. It strengthens the gene pool.
The moment that Ocean Ramey touches the huge shark is a beautiful moment among earth’s living species. It should not be ruined by internet chitter-chatter over what a once in a lifetime moment should and should not look like. Let Ramsey be Ramsey.
@@obijuan3004 I really like your perspective on it! Survival of the fittest is an interesting way of putting it. I think it's so great to see her swimming along with the shark, however just based on divers etiquette etc touching is what makes me nervous. I know that most people wouldn't do what she does, but others would be tempted to copy and potentially cause a shark bite incident. I think she knows the sharks well enough to read the situation, while others are much less educated.

@Vegan Diver Katt I suppose you are also Critical of the Techniques and Procedures of William Winram, Greg Skomal Ph.D, Dr. Neil Burnie and Vic Peddemors. All of which Studied Shark Ecology BEFORE Ocean Ramsey. Are they at fault for Learning to interact with Sharks in their World ??
Think the biggest difference is that their work wasnt plastered all over social media in a way that makes many people want to try and copy her. She just published a fantastic book about shark behaviour!

you know how their is a touch pool in the aquarium. people touch sea life in a touch pool. so it is technically the same thing if you touch a wild great white shark. plus their is other people out their touching other sharks

Yeah she does great work and bringing awareness however I just don’t understand why there are so many photos of her touching these animals. How about just show a photo of the animals and not the hedonistic ‘look at me’ photo opportunities.

Nah, I like talking with must hands too much. Sharks are actually attracted by things which give evidence of their pray around. Me waving my hands would just get them a little confused. They're after fish blood and electromagnetic pulses of much smaller creatures

@@OceanPancake as a hard of hearing diver, i can say i love people who talk with their hands, who dont use sign language. Hands just like facial expressions help with recognizing emotion when i cant catch tone of voice when me hearing aids are not on. Love ur videos ❤

. She is inspiring, strong and beautiful. You would do much better to focus on what you're doing instead of trying to gain notoriety by criticizing a successful woman in the same industry. It's unbecoming. Take the high road and speak to Ocean directly, instead, if you're that concerned.
Ramsey is a fake. Any legit conservationist/marine biologist would say look but don’t touch.
Most people are not going to try what Ocean Ramsey does; the scientists that make negative comments about her are probably a little jealous because they have not been able to get as close so they are being jerks in my opinion.
She is intelligent and articulate .Her stunning looks have helped her stand out so she uses that to her advantage as well, why not ?
She has I serious sincere and urgent message to share with the world. In certain parts of the world sharks are no longer as abundant as they once were. This raises the level of concern as far as how the unnecessary elimination of sharks is affecting the oceans ecosystems worldwide.
