Spy disguises work best when the enemy player's attention's focused on something else, as in every single waking moment while you're playing TF2, since you're usually way more worried about the potential uber push, random crocket, sniper that's dominating half your team, or any number of other things than if that random pyro over there waiting for a health-pack as you walk by for a second _might_ be a spy. Bonus points if it's the YER, since then it could literally be the guy you just checked 2 seconds ago...

@@enbybunny9940 Switch to the alternate disguise GUI in settings (i think it's called fast disguise or something?). Instead of having to push 1-9, you first press 1-3 to select Attack, Defense, or Support, then 1-3 again to pick which class in the group to play as.
After turning that on I have absolutely no idea how anyone can play the default way anymore, it basically locks you out of playing any class further right on the select screen than heavy unless you lift a hand out of position.

Thats right! Im sacrificing credibility to make it harder for 1 of the 9 classes to headshot me! I mean they can still headshot me but who cares! We are spy mains! We are so superior! The thing is that that kind of playstyle is completely different from the average "be patient" kind of plays that stock spy does. It's usually used by high level spies that know about their positioning and know how to blend in. You have no idea how much that sniper a few meters away from your target gives them tunnel vision.

What I'm taking from this video is to just act like the bullets don't phase you so they stop shooting you. Then just walk behind them.
I like saying "Thank you" as if you're grateful for their spychecking, usually works and inflicts extra emotional damage when they turn their back and realize they've been shammed

Making someone believe your disguise is the most satisfying thing to do as a spy
Getting ubered by an enemy medic then just standing there saying "Thank you" while nodding never gets old. A small handful of times the med will just killbind after ubering an enemy spy and tbh i get it

It was only two times, but it still makes me rethink my existence every time i think about it, its genuinely psychological damage to the brain

"Remember to never panic cloak if an enemy begins to shoot you as a spy checking method. Act calm, and pretend as if what they are doing does not alter your current mindset. Tricking enemies is what spy excels at, and it's very satisfying when an enemy shoots you down to single digit health, only for them to see you not react to said damage, assume you are really a teammate, and offer their back to you like Easter candy.
7:28 also works for this.
Good players dont stop spychecking just because there was no reaction, though. You stop spychecking until the spy would reasonably have died or when the teammate shoots back.
There is no counter to this spycheck strategy; The moment you see a teammate who is not shooting at you, you know they are a spy.
Basically, whenever your "disguises work", you're just playing against bad players. No different from backstabbing F2P players to get diamondback crits to kill the better players.

Disguising as your own team (I think press R while the menu is open) is a super underrated way to get out of spawn without yelling to the whole enemy team "HEY IM A SPY"
Yeah, i love disguising as a friendly scout running out of spawn, and only when getting behind the enemy team do i pick an actual disguise.
but what does it do?
@@Grayson-tk5hn well first, enemies on the opposite team, when respawning, can see teammates through walls for a few seconds, meaning they can also see you on the other side of the map, and know that a spy is approaching. Second, if the other team sees you before you cloak, they won't know that you are a spy, and think you are a normal enemy, after which you can go back and cloak without the enemy team knowing you're a spy.
Exactly, it also works well with the dead ringer especially when leaving spawn as a round starts on RED. Tank a hit or two as a scout and people will be so busy with the round starting chaos to notice that a spy's body dropped since you will visually be going from red to red and not blu to red. Use this time to get behind enemy lines and then you have a window of time where they are not really expecting spy's yet
Gotta make sure you still act though. A soldier or demo who don't do a jump or even fire at all out of spawn is suspicious. So is a too-slow scout or medic without a healing target.

I spent like 5 minutes running around near the enemy spawn disguised as a pyro spamming the "SPY!" voice line, pretending to be searching for, well, myself. an actual pyro comes out of their spawn, is initially wary of me, but then ends up looking for me, with me.
together we make our way to the frontline after a little more searching, and i'm perfectly set up for a chainstab, when finally, i get shot in the back of the head by a bot

I always try to gun down Razorback snipers whenever I can. Three point-blank shots will always kill a sniper, and they never have any time to react!
The Razorback only counters a bad spy (which is sadly most of them), as long as you know that *_SPY HAS A GUN_* it's no trouble.
That varies because if the Razorback Sniper is by a Sentry then you have two problems to contend with that require some team assistance to take care of.
It really depends on context. If the sniper has teammates or a sentry around as Talon mentioned gunning down might not be an option. Even in more idea situations it increases the risk something will go wrong before making the kill.
razorback counters spy completely, unless the sniper is playing alone (in which case it does nothing)
I always feel bad for the Spies who keep using the same disguise or even the same player, and who either don't notice or don't learn that they're disguising as someone our team doesn't have. Those ones end up being a little too easy to catch out. Plus the absolute prank Valve pulled on them with the outlines on spawn...

At one point it would be pretty neat, if the YeR doesn't make you lose disguise when you swing the knife and hit nothing.
Like you could bait people so much with it, where you disguise as someone with their melee out and when the enemy look at you and you swing the YeR and the disguise also swing their melee the enemy with think it friendly since Spy can't perform a melee attack so you can sneak into a fight or base pretty casually.

You know, I just realized your main trick to making disguises work: when you get shot, you don’t react. You just keep walking at them, and they’re like “Oh, my bad, didn’t know you were chill like that.”, and then turn around.
It rarely works IMO. The enemy will see that you took knockback, and if they decide to shoot you twice, then you are screwed

Its not the main trick. It sometimes works and works better in some contexts than others. Tactics like not looking directly at who you are trying to kill as you close are more important.
Only works if the opponent is bad. The moment you do animations (shooting, revving, etc), you prove yourself as not a spy. The point of spychecking is to do those animations, not to just stand there dumbfounded that your team is trying to kill you.
Really only very bad players will fall for this trick, although it does work if you're in middle of a hectic fight.
Disguises work as long as people don't spycheck you with a lethal amount of damage lol, that's the message I'm getting from this

it’s almost like the purpose is to DISGUISE yourself as the ENEMY
Disguises are the most situational part of spy’s arsenal, if the enemy is stacking Soldier, heavy, and demo. You will have a very hard time getting a good disguise with high speed because if you choose scout an bhop and there isn’t one on the enemy teay and they are good they will INSTANTLY kill you because you are not wearing cosmetics. Spy’s disguises are also VERY buggy, there are cases where the demoman disguise is missing his legs because the person being disguised as is wearing the booties/bootlegger. Pyro disguises are notorious for missing their heads.
Another situational thing about spy is if you have another spy on your team, if that spy is playing VERY poorly the enemy will automatically spycheck anyone suspicious.
Of course they do work, the question is how often. Obviously the more experienced the player is, the less likely they'll be fooled. Personally I'm almost never fooled by spies, but occasionally I do encounter spies that deserve an oscar, in that they manage to fool me, which means that it is possible but it certainly requires a lot of skill.
If you watch competitive highlander games it happens at least a couple of times most games. More often than trick stabs at the very least. The reason it works is tradeoffs. It takes time, attention, and clip to spy check. So in many cases you have to make split second choices to risk death by non-spys because you were paying attention to a suspect but not sure if spy or you have to risk death by the spy. In short enough time windows its impossible to tell for sure if someone is a spy so acting is important.
It also isn't as difficult as you might suspect. Just try playing dead wringer spy and walk backward while disguised towards the enemy team. It is bizarrly effective againts most players. It is honestly much easier than trick stabbing consistently. Its just that fewer people but time into getting better at it.
@@peterisawesomeplease spychecking isn't just when you shoot an opponent, it's when you "prove yourself innocent" of being spy by doing any animation at all. For classes like pyro, medic and heavy, they can spycheck themselves by shooting/healing/revving without losing much ammo or speed.
So using any of those disguises is impossible against good players, unless there's a bad medic/pyro/heavy in your team that doesn't understand this mechanic.
And at that moment, disguising as those players is equal to farming diamondback crits from the same bad players; Their team suffers not from you playing better or from them playing worse, but just because there was a bad player in their team

But again even at the highest levels of comp people are still "fooled". It isn't because they don't understand how disguises work.
Its because there are attention and clip trade offs. If there is no one around you can spy check everyone. But in the middle of a battle you have to make educated guesses on incomplete information.
You see a pyro not shooting but in the right position for a quarter of a second do you spy check them? Yes if you are not about to die to the scout in your face. But with that scout in your face its better to use that last rocket trying to kill the scout than to spy check someone that might or might not be a spy.
I mean whenever I get shot I just look back like there's a spy behind me it works almost 80-90% of the times.

1. Spy uses good acting skills to win game
2. Community sees good spy replay
3. Community says disguises work
3. THEN a bad spy with no acting skills enter the community
4. Community sees bad spy replay
5. Community returns to saying disguises are bad
6. repeat
Sharing my story of how disguises work: Was playing in pl_enclosure, disguising as Pyro with low health, stands directly next to dispenser to act as if I am healing, RED soldier fires a rocket at me, then stops because I just look like an innocent Pyro healing, Soldier passes by me to fight at the frontlines, Engineer then comes, still standing at dispenser, wait for Engineer to turn his back then stab him.
And I live.

Playin on an instant respawn Hightower, noticed an unusual soldier player with a pyro. Pyro leaves him for a second and soldier doesn’t notice, I sneak up, and move as the pyro would. Dude falls for it completely and gets backstabbed, next thing I hear in vc is “That won’t happen again.”
Another bit of free acting advice is don't take a stab when there's a bigger target. If you pass up an obvious free stab on a clueless sniper while disguised as a power class the medic will trust you enough to give you the uber.

For begginers, try disguising as sniper from time to time and just stay back (also look at your team not the enemy). Engineers usually set up nests so pretend you are looking for a spot. Scout is generally a bad idea, soldier pyro demo and heavy go into battle, medic should stay at spawn and spy is also not great

They think the enemies have them all figured out, thinking only sentries can be fooled. However, half of the time they pick bad disguises, poorly act and pick wrong targets. Dying to nearby enemies, the enemy they're disguised as, nearby sentries,...
as the enemy:
You see a pyro run at you with an axe? That's a dead give-away!
You see a soldier reload their rocket launcher? That... CAN'T be a spy... right? Welp there ya have it
Disguises aren't meant to be a "invis watch without meter", nor an "invincibility shield"
They are tools to make yourself a good 50% less likely to be shot at, even more in the righ circumstances

Disguises is not something you should purely rely on, but also not something you should just ignore. Heavy disguise works more often than you could imagine as NOBODY expects a heavy to be a spy
