Are Anleolife® Metal Raised Garden Beds Any Good?

  • Raised bed gardening is popular for many reasons! We’ve seen the Anleolife® metal raised beds advertised across social media and decided to buy a set. Here are our impressions!

We have several raised beds in our garden plot with wood chip paths. There is also a corn plot that is directly sowed in the ground, which is the most efficient way we have found to grow corn in a larger block for wind protection, increased pollination, and reduced watering needs.
However, the allure of raised beds is very high, and this approach provides many benefits, such as order and structure, efficient use of soil and amendments in concentrated areas, use of drip irrigation, and ease of planting, cultivation, and harvest.
We have installed a vine crop area using 4’ (1.2 m) round rings with 8’ to 10’ (2.5 to 3 m) spacing between them. This will allow our Crenshaw melons, watermelon, and cantaloupe to spread out on deeply wood-chipped paths. The wood chips will reduce surface temperatures, keep the vines and fruit cleaner, increase moisture retention, and suppress weeds.
We began shopping for durable products that would allow us to install the units and have them in place for several years while continuing to look great!
Our search took us to plumbing supply companies for large-diameter ridged pipe that could be cut into rings (very durable but expensive and hard to transport), agricultural stores for galvanized feed or water troughs, and garden centers for galvanized metal rings.
Along the way, we came across the Anleolife® product because of their extensive social media ad campaigns. After reading the reviews and checking the price, we purchased the 6-piece set of 48” (1.2 m) rounds. They are constructed of galvanized corrugated sections powder-coated in either gray or white. We got the gray.
The rings are made up of 6 overlapping sections, with 6 sets of 6 galvanized Phillips screws and wingnuts. It comes with an inexpensive screwdriver, which was promptly discarded. We used a cordless driver and pliers to hold the wingnuts as we tightened the fasteners.
We did the assembly on our shop worktable, which is 4’ (1.2 m) wide, so they barely fit as we put them together, but it was workable.
The rings are 18” (46 cm) tall. We plan to put the wood chips deep enough so that about 10” (25 cm) are sticking up.
We will do a full review after these beds have been in use for a year, but our initial impressions are very favorable. The product is packed well and arrived in about a week. The sections are short and easy to handle as they are assembled. The fasteners are robust and go together well. 22 gauge galvanized metal is the base material and is powder-coated in either gray or white.
We don’t have any experience with the rigidity of the rectangular beds that Anleolife® offers, but the ring models are substantial and rigid enough that they feel like they are quality units.
The boxes are clearly marked “MADE IN CHINA.” The order was filled out of a shipping point in the U.S.A. At the time of filming, we paid about $425 for a set of 6 round beds. This equates to $71 each, which as $10 or more cheaper per ring than what we found at the local agricultural or garden center stores. Shipping was free, so the savings were genuine.
We’ve also produced another episode showing our site preparation. This included tilling the area for weed suppression and ease of installation of the water system, filling in the raised beds with organic material and growing medium, installing the chipped wood pathways and edge-holdbacks, and planting our crops. I wonder if anything in the rings will leach out (especially as the paint deteriorates) into the soil and contaminate the vegetables as they grow. These may be fine, but it could be better to use concrete blocks to make raised beds, and they'll last longer.

I've wondered this myself. Also, a plastic irrigation system will deliver plastics all over the garden

I hope you don’t really use chicken wire for the bottom. It deteriorates way to fast. Hardware cloth is much more durable.
It will be interesting to see how well these beds last.

Thanks for writing! I have found a product that has 3/4" holes, is heavier gauge, galvanized, and is made for this purpose. I'll show it and provide links for it in the upcoming episode. Indeed, time will tell how good these beds are. Best, DFJ

I have a question, a year ago you did a review on the gx3 plastic restorer. Do you still use it how has it held up?

Indeed, we still use it. It needs to be reapplied a couple of times a year, but really helps the appearance of the plastic, vinyl and rubber. It's not a "one and done."
