Directional sewing is great when attaching hardware on straps so you don't have to pivate. With the needle in the left position, the foot can ride along say a square shape hardware and a box can be created along with the "x" in the middle of the stitched box.
Maybe use to attach a patch on a sleeve if it was wide enough to get around the machine base without storage box or embroidery module attached. Worth a try as un-picking seams isn't always easy.
I used this feature to patch jeans.
