That PCV valve on the front valve cover is choking engine is one problem. 1998 Windstars have the PCV valve only on the rear valve cover. That may help the stalling.
my 98 mustang 3.8l has the exact same noise and I mean exact. It has been going for 10 years. I replaced the pcv valve and nothing. I pulled the dipstick out and the noise goes away. Put it back in and the noise comes back. Still to this day can not figure it out. I have a feeling that it is on the intake manifold, or at least I narrowed it down to that.
It's a typical Ford design, so.... Belt Tensioner/Idler Pulley's? Power Steering Pump? Bearings in any of the belt driven components, A/C, Alternator? Cam synchronizer?
I use to had a 1996 ford Windstar now it,s at the junkyard 5 years ago it did that on mine and I took a look and it was coming from the water pump and I drove it a lot on trips and later the noise went away not even a little noise these windstars you have to jack the engine out 3 inches away from the vehicle I ordered a water pump I never fix it
So what was wrong with the van??.. Curious to know because i'm working on a van with this exact engine - not the same problem though..This van has water in the engine oil..
Pls I really need your help, my van is doing the same exact sound and it looks that is new. I just got this van. do you think is better to get the van to de dealear?
hey guy looks like your pcv valve is in the wrong whole. It goes in the back.Check it out, on valve cover on the back just saying will not fix your problem but hey
Why would you want to 3.0 L Vulcan engine when you could have the 3.8 L Essex? From my experience, the 3.8 L is actually more reliable than the 3.0 L. When is a lot stronger and turkey or engine also then the 3.0 L and isn’t a terrible engine to work on.
it could be anything on the belt..tensioner ....alot of things
we had the same problem and replaced several things and its still squeaking a little

It's the good old water pump buddy and that's a job and a half

@gichmaster cam sync, dont sound like that, and it wouldnt keep doing that if the engine is off, its some kinda of vacume leak
I'm guessing A/C compressor. Or a second guess of bearings going out on something?
Since the squeak lasts a few seconds after the engine is turned off, it's probably a very bad vacuum leak.
vaccuum leak or bearing in electric only things to explain the way the noise continues
