  • I have been asked to include the Ransom Rest in more video's for accuracy testing. So what better pistol to test with then the Lipsey's Exclusive Ruger Blackhawk 10MM Conversion in 10MM & 40S&W. Today I used three different loads to test with 200gr, 175grSWC and 135gr Nosler JHP.
The Ransom Rest is a great device for accuracy testing like what I have conducted in this video, but I use it to make me a better reloader.
Stay tuned for the next video as we compare 10MM velocity from the Ruger Blackhawk against other pistols with different barrel lengths.

It is the best tool for determining accuracy but there is a little bit of a learning curve and science to using it. The biggest opportunity is making sure you have it mounted to as solid of bench as possible.

Very nice! That revolver is on my must have list. Seems like the ideal gun to get the most out of 10mm. I'm just starting out reloading 10mm, how are you liking the CFE Pistol powder? I love it in other calibers I reload. It seems like a good 10mm middle ground powder.

Thanks for your review! The only thing that makes a 10mm better is to put it in a revolver like the Blackhawk!

My go to powder for 10mm has always been Power Pistol. It meters very consistently from powder throw to powder throw, and it's perfect for the mid power loads I prefer. I have shot some extremely tight groups with that powder. I have also had very good luck with it in 45+P loads.

wobbly table may knock off the accuracy of the first shot on a couple of them

You could seat those bullets out farther because you aren't constrained by length limits to fit into a semi auto magazine. That means you could use more gun powder while still staying below max pressures. Having the quickload reloading program would be a must if you tried doing this.

I have one of these, brand new never fired in stainless. I'm trying to sell it, but I can't find anything online that will guide me on the market value; any thoughts? Maybe they're discontinued

Does the revolver seem to lead at all? Curious to know how rugers throat deminsions are on this model. I'm looking into purchasing the shorter barrel one and shooting 220gr hard casts through it. Iirc your on the forum, shoot my a pm @bones741,kinda want some first hand info on it before I take the plunge. Thanks!

No leading at all but to be fair I have not shot a whole lot of lead through it.

The rear sight is adjustable......so why aren't you utilizing it to bring your groups with the ammo being used, to hit point of aim? If you have the benefit of a Ransom Rest, just fire 3, make adjustments, fire 3.....repeat until the gun hits relative to the load you're shooting.

the entire table is moving, depending on the range to target this could really effect the groups a lot by not giving a consistent starting point. understood you have to work with what you have. jacketed bullets can cover up a lot of probs with a revolver that lead reveals. check each cylinder throats, the right size bullet should push through with a bit of pressure and should be consistent on all throats. ruger has been doing a good job in the past few years by avoiding gang reamers, all the throats ive seen in the past few years have been very consistent. ruger 44 mag throats ive seen tend to run larger and give great accuracy with .431 bullets (44 mag generally .429). would be curious what you estimate the throats of the .40 to be with lead bullets. the few videos ive seen you do so far are quite good and informative.

Some guys can outshoot a ranson rest but, I guess, you can't.
You should have used some factory ammo so that I wouldn't wonder whether or not the flier was the gun or your ammo.
You need to get better at taking the variables out of the equation and just test the gun.

I would like to meet the guy or gal that can provide the repeat-ability of the ransom rest. Having been reloading for over 20 years I am confident my ammo is much more consistent than what I would get from factory ammunition.

Factory ammo is straight trash. I have the same pride in my ability to produce a better more consistent handload also. People don't know what they are missing....

I have reloaded for 25 years but at 72 and progressive bifocals, it's getting harder to put the rear sight, the front sight, and the target all in the same picture. If I shot a flier, I would have known it but with a Ransom Rest, there is no way of knowing if it was the gun or the Ransom Rest. I would have shot the group over and over until I was sure of the results.

I bought the Ruger New Blackhawk in 10mm and the .40 S&W cylinder about a month ago and am very happy. I was able to go 6 for 6 on the same shotgun hull even before sighting it in.
Here is a funny little poem to try out on your friends.
