    This video is actually helpful. Straight to the point. I am going to sixth form soon, and I am planning to write an EPQ about "What makes us human?" I mostly got the idea from a book 'Do androids dream of electric sheep'. The book basically explores how robots develop human like empathy uncanny to different versions of the robots as if they were human. And that got me wondering, does empathy truly makes us human? (Like some people have mental disorders/illnesses where they lack the aspect of empathy but they are still considered human.

      WOW! What a question! Top tips on picking a direction is focus on a few key topics and then research within those categories. Even though you might be missing out parts of the debate, it's impossible to include all the different arguments in just 5,000 words! Being selective is one of the skills the EPQ seeks to develop and I have no doubts you'll step up to the challenge!

My title is "is it true that the Sikh influence on the independence movement has been overlooked?" and it's just mainly about Indian independence 1947, and stuff. A lot of my essay still needs to be done and honestly I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on what I could do, because we only have about 4 or 5 weeks left now but our presentations are also next week so I'm ✨scared✨

    • @ImogenWhite
      @ImogenWhite  3 года назад +1

      No worries! EPQ is normally one of those last minute things so you're definitely not the only one. The best thing to do is make sure you're 100% on the line of argument you're taking for each section because the presentation is basically an overview of the essay so if you just make sure it's all planned you can deal with actually writing it later!

      Hi Sophie! Glad you found it useful! In terms of the presentation, I'm quite a confident speaker so I did my presentation without notes but when I actually presented this in assembly (separate to the EPQ) I had some flashcards with the key points on them. If I only said what was on the flashcards that would have been fine, but I was able to expand a little without having to worry about sticking to a specific script. I practiced quite a lot with my family as it's important to make sure someone with no idea about your topic can understand your presentation as chances are your assessor won't be an expert in it!

    I'm currently a year 13 student and I'm trying to balance an EPQ alongside 3 essay-based subjects. I got my topic and title, I'm just really struggling to evaluate and to write my EPQ -- 5000 words is a lot for me and it's causing me to have breakdowns -- same issue occurred when I had to do my coursework. I don't know what to do - my deadline is approaching fast and I need an A to get a lowered grade offer.

    • @ImogenWhite
      @ImogenWhite  2 года назад

      I can completely empathise - doing an EPQ alongside your subjects isn't easy. The best thing to do is to get a clear structure set out and just do one section every day. I told myself it doesn't have to be any good there just have to be words on a piece of paper. It's so much easier to edit when you've got some content to work on rather than writing in the first place!

    • @ImogenWhite
      @ImogenWhite  3 года назад +1

      Hi Zarah, What subject does this mainly link to - psychology? geography? I think once you narrow your topic down a little you'll find it isn't as sensitive because you'll be looking at a small aspect of the topic and not the topic as a whole which can be quite heavy. If you're looking at a specific aspect of the topic you should also find it easier to research. Hope this helps! 😊

    • @nikitapatel5954
      @nikitapatel5954 3 года назад +1

      If I had to say something, I think writing 'how do you think' in an EPQ title is not the best thing to do as it leads to an opinion rather than facts. Try to make it more factual so you can find some research on it that isn't biased in any way. Also, you may have to identify what you mean is a 'man's job'.

    • @ImogenWhite
      @ImogenWhite  3 года назад +1

      Ooh that sounds super interesting - I agree with Nikita, I would shorten the question to just "To what extent is engineering a 'man's job' and how does this affect the level of ambition of future perspective engineers?" Try and focus your EPQ on what different academics think about the topic and then in the conclusion use the evidence to explain why you think one side is potentially stronger than the other. I hope this helps!!

I suspect the reason you're struggling to find information which isn't on research methods is because your topic is so relevant there is still very limited research available on it. Hi, thanks for this! I'm really confused because I started my EPQ last year but covid happened and then my teacher left, so I restarted it this year, having already done my research last year. I'm confused about how i need to structure it with regards to a literature review. I am doing aqa and I have something called a critical source log which is a table where I have my sources evaluate them and justify whether I will use it. To me this seems like a literature review, or do I need to physically write a literature review at the start of the essay? Some people said that it is necessary for high marks, but I dont have a teacher to ask about this. Thanks so much! 😊

    • @ImogenWhite
      @ImogenWhite  3 года назад +2

      I personally just added the literature review on the end (in the bibliography, it was just a paragraph or two about the validity/credibility of sources). I also did AQA and that sounds pretty similar to what I did for my literature review! I did one in mine and did well in my EPQ so for the effort it's worth, I'd say it's worth it spending half an hour or so just making a little table!

    Um an EPQ isn't just an essay.... You can literally produce ANYTHING. You can literally make a sculpture or renovate a room. The EPQ is to show any skill not just writing. You keep a log and show progress and research. If you don't do an essay they you need to make a 2000 word evaluation along with the product. This video is very misleading. You clearly only knew one possibility of the EPQ. Your school has forced you to do what they wanted (an essay) but the EPQ is open to anything and everything. You could literally make your EPQ on making clothes, painting, you could write a novel, you could make a short film. You can literally do anything. You could even do a project on exercise. Not writing an essay about it but actually making a project and logging it as you go showing your progress and also presenting it when it is done

I appreciate there are other types of EPQs but the 2000 word evaluation still needs to be research based and as such I believe these tips still stand. The majority of people do the essay EPQ over the artefact EPQ and therefore I wanted to share my experience doing this type of EPQ. I'm sorry if you found this misleading, I just wanted to share my experience and what I learnt from my EPQ.

      Schools/colleges don't force the choice, that is up to the student, as Imogen states, most students choose to do the essay and again she is correct is saying that the product, whether essay or artefact/performance etc needs to have a solid research base and balanced, evidence based evaluation. One of my students is going to do a dance piece this year as their product and she has already begun the research base to support her journey through the product development.
