Not really, microsoft themselves have allowed people to develop on their retail consoles. So, i dont think microsoft should have any issues with people rightfully porting their apps after paying their 20 dollar license fees.

@@carlopepi Dev mode itself doesn't impose any limitations. UWP does, but most of them can be bypassed by making sure you set the app to game mode in the Dev Home. I don't think anybody ever made a proper comparative benchmark to see how much it really affects things though. How microsoft handles piracy in general is gabe newell levels of brilliant. instead of trying to stamp it out like sony they basically said "we'll let you emulate but in a controlled environment". add on top of that gamepass making pirating current gen games pointless because its so much easier to pay $15 then it is to hunt for hours on shady websites for games and hack the console, there is zero reason to pirate on an xbox.
Most attempts at fighting piracy come from a complete misunderstanding of piracy; they think it's just a bunch of assholes wanting free shit. As Gabe Newell said; it's about a service problem, not money. If you offer all the games a player could want in an easy-to-access and cheap service (gamepass), they have no reason to pirate. Stuff like aggressive DRM, locking the game to a horrible service (Cough Epic Games Store Cough Cough), don't offer backwards compatibility on your console, overprice ports of previous gen games, locking out emulation, etc. will absolutely cause pirates, ironically.
It also means more devs will be making Homebrew even without the system being hacked. Which means lots of Homebrew will be ready for/if the system gets busted open by hackers. Less waiting for Homebrew.
Also: they set the challenge bar high, so for those who like to reverse engineer and crack things, they'll still do it but it will a) be more rewarding challenge b) likely happen after the useful life of the console.
there has to be support for using third parties peripherals so i wouldn't be surprised if plugging in a BT dongle was possible somehow. I guess your app might have to provide the drivers and tools to pair the devices though.

I watched this vid when uploaded and kept it in mind all this time. Just got a XSS yesterday, and after I finish installing the MS games I bought, I'll definitely be checking further into this. I'll be excited and happy to play my retro games on my couch without having to drag out my old consoles from storage and set them up. So yes, tyvm for all you do for the community, MVG!
Nintendo does have NES & SNES games available if you have the online subscription. But what Xbox is offering here is just absolutely awesome. It's crazy how much Microsoft turned around to become one of the most consumer friendly companies compared to their shameless cash-grabbing competitors.

Stutters due to shader compilation in Dolphin can be fixed by setting shaders to "asynchronous (skip drawing)" (this might cause graphical bugs but I've never noticed much) and enabling the option to precompile shaders at startup.

Once the stocking issues subside, you can always acquire an xbox through microsoft's xbox all access program. Its a line of credit to purchase an xbox one/series console. the series s will cost $25 a month for 2 years, but it comes with game pass ultimate (which includes xbox live) for the duration of the loan, which also has no interest charges. its a good deal.

Very impressive. I am especially impressed with Saturn emulation working so well. That system has been historically one that has been extremely difficult to emulate due to the architecture. I didn't expect to see it running fluidly to be honest. Big props to Microsoft for offering a dev mode to allow homebrew developers to run their creations on the hardware. This is a great alternative as in the past consoles had to be hacked to gain access...which of course went hand in hand with piracy. This is a good way to appease the people who just want to run their own code while still maintaining the security of the console.

To be fair, rpcs3 probably won't run perfectly in the emulator's current state. Xbox Series S/X uses a Zen 2 CPU clocked at 3.8ghz. There are plenty of videos of rpcs3 on PC Zen 2 CPUs. Even overclocked to 4.2ghz or above, Zen 2 struggles to achieve full speed in higher end games such as Uncharted, Red Dead or TLOU (some less demanding ones like Demon's Souls are fine though). Even the massively faster Zen 3 or 9th/10th gen Intels still aren't always up to snuff. RPCS3 is still improving though, so hopefully speed improves as well.

You've got my attention, this isn't something I had considered at all. Gamepass + varied emulation from the couch is enticing. Sometimes I just don't want to sit at my desk. Plus I just find running emulators on different machines interesting for some reason. I'm curious what we'll see regarding adapters for various older console controllers.

This is one of the many reasons that microsoft has been killing it in the category of consumer benefits. You would never see this on a ps as xbox has been taking the stance of open features for the consumer. Ms should keep this positive trend going
@Jacob S I’m sure the One X would do a much better job than the OG One. But Emulation on the One was rather bad. I’d do some research to make sure it’s worth it before you spend the $20. Unless you’re a student, if you’re a student with a .edu email you can get it for free. You have to sign up for some Microsoft program, I don’t remember which
most dev kits are free, even dev mode can be unlocked on your android phone you can download the sdk on your computer and start testing your apps for nothing so this really isnt a cheap way to do development its more of a clever way to sell "emulation" mode

retroarch already has the Play! core to run PS2 games actually. It just has compatibility issues with a lot of games as of now. If a PCSX2 core is coming to retroarch most PS2 games will run flawlessly.
seriously, why the hell did sony cut PS1 back compat from the PS4 and PS5? it's extremely easy performance-wise and they have their own emulator with really good compatibility. every model of the PS3 had it (either hardware or emulation), the PSP had it, the Vita had it, there's no reason for PS1 emulation to not be a thing on a modern Playstation console.

The PS3 costed hundreds more than the PS4 when it first came out just because of backwards compatibility. You have to ask yourself if that extra money is really all that worth it for a nostalgia fix. Even my phone can play PS1, why does my PS5 have to waste its tech on that? Just my opinion. It's not worth it long term for the player or the manufacturer. Ask 2006 Sony lmfao

I watched this vid when uploaded and kept it in mind all this time. Just got a XSS yesterday, and after I finish installing the MS games I bought, I'll definitely be checking further into this. I'll be excited and happy to play my retro games on my couch without having to drag out my old consoles from storage and set them up. So yes, tyvm for all you do for the community, MVG!

Stutters due to shader compilation in Dolphin can be fixed by setting shaders to "asynchronous (skip drawing)" (this might cause graphical bugs but I've never noticed much) and enabling the option to precompile shaders at startup.

Once the stocking issues subside, you can always acquire an xbox through microsoft's xbox all access program. Its a line of credit to purchase an xbox one/series console. the series s will cost $25 a month for 2 years, but it comes with game pass ultimate (which includes xbox live) for the duration of the loan, which also has no interest charges. its a good deal.

Very impressive. I am especially impressed with Saturn emulation working so well. That system has been historically one that has been extremely difficult to emulate due to the architecture. I didn't expect to see it running fluidly to be honest. Big props to Microsoft for offering a dev mode to allow homebrew developers to run their creations on the hardware. This is a great alternative as in the past consoles had to be hacked to gain access...which of course went hand in hand with piracy. This is a good way to appease the people who just want to run their own code while still maintaining the security of the console.

To be fair, rpcs3 probably won't run perfectly in the emulator's current state. Xbox Series S/X uses a Zen 2 CPU clocked at 3.8ghz. There are plenty of videos of rpcs3 on PC Zen 2 CPUs. Even overclocked to 4.2ghz or above, Zen 2 struggles to achieve full speed in higher end games such as Uncharted, Red Dead or TLOU (some less demanding ones like Demon's Souls are fine though). Even the massively faster Zen 3 or 9th/10th gen Intels still aren't always up to snuff. RPCS3 is still improving though, so hopefully speed improves as well.

You've got my attention, this isn't something I had considered at all. Gamepass + varied emulation from the couch is enticing. Sometimes I just don't want to sit at my desk. Plus I just find running emulators on different machines interesting for some reason.
I'm curious what we'll see regarding adapters for various older console controllers.
MVG has convinced me to buy the 2ds, WII U and OG Xbox in the past, purely for the emulation those consoles can provide.
Now after forking over $750 AUD for a PS5 (which I wholeheartedly love) I wasn't planning on getting an Xbox anytime soon.......

This is an incredibly clever way of implementing dev kits, akin to net yaroze in the 90's, without buying expensive development kits.
most dev kits are free, even dev mode can be unlocked on your android phone you can download the sdk on your computer and start testing your apps for nothing so this really isnt a cheap way to do development its more of a clever way to sell "emulation" mode

One request/suggestion: Please consider adding either an on-screen label or using RUclips's chapters feature to show what game is currently being displayed. But again, this is great, and I don't want to make it sound like that nitpick suggests this video is in any way bad.

ironically, other os actually helped protect the ps3's security bc the people who wanted emulators didn't have to hack it, and soon after they removed other os, the ps3 was hacked

The irony: Xbox One and Series S/X consoles can run legacy PS1 (and maybe soon PS2) games, but Sony's offical PS5 console can't 🤣.
retroarch already has the Play! core to run PS2 games actually. It just has compatibility issues with a lot of games as of now. If a PCSX2 core is coming to retroarch most PS2 games will run flawlessly.

seriously, why the hell did sony cut PS1 back compat from the PS4 and PS5? it's extremely easy performance-wise and they have their own emulator with really good compatibility. every model of the PS3 had it (either hardware or emulation), the PSP had it, the Vita had it, there's no reason for PS1 emulation to not be a thing on a modern Playstation console.
@@alicev1500 That's where you're wrong. Not every PS3 was able to play *all* PS1 or PS2 titles. Very limited like the XB1 was. The PS3 costed hundreds more than the PS4 when it first came out just because of backwards compatibility. You have to ask yourself if that extra money is really all that worth it for a nostalgia fix. Even my phone can play PS1, why does my PS5 have to waste its tech on that? Just my opinion. It's not worth it long term for the player or the manufacturer. Ask 2006 Sony lmfao
