  • Brent Weeks’ Lightbringer series doesn’t avoid asking big questions:
Is there a God? Is the system what God intended? How can we have faith when they are absent? This essay focuses primarily on the first four novels, as this is where faith is most poignantly explored, the final entry in the series is discussed later as I argue it takes a different approach to the earlier installments.

I feel as if everything in the first four books was leading up to what happens in the fifth. There were already subtle moments of what the truth was prior to this: (Kip suddenly knowing how to blow up the ship in book 2), Kip encountering Abaddon, the other gods appearing to those becoming the color gods, the entire existence of Rea Siluz, the mysterious entities in the color prisons, etc. There is so much appearance of abundance of evil that it would be weird if Orholam didn't show up by the end. On top of that, there are other factors to consider. I really don't think we would have gotten to the ending with Gavin deciding to give Andross a chance unless Orholam spoke to him. And if the ending doesn't go in that direction, I think you lose something special, the Tywin Lannister type of story and arc taken with a different approach. I also think a series full of ambiguities and questions in a fantasy universe leading up to Gavin perhaps coming to his own conclusion without something fantastical occurring would have been kind of lame. We have already seen it a thousand times. I thought the way Brent Weeks did it had a measure of originality to it.
