I read Sylvia's lovers in translation, so the dialect didn't affect my reading experience. I agree that the first half is slow, I also found the characters a little bit annoying in that part of the book, but it's the part where the atmosphere is most focused on and most enchanting ❤I finished Sylvia's lovers last night, in tears. I was even sadder when I found out there's no screen adaptation for it :c

I wish it was available on audio book. I love your reviews and am quickly becoming a fan of victorian literature.

I don't know why I was immediately drawn in to this story - it seems like it was hard to get into for both you and Ange. I think it was just the Romantic nature of it and how it almost feels Gothic. It's like Elizabeth Gaskell, the Bronte's, and Thomas Hardy all got together to write a beautiful book. 😍

It is a bit Hardy-esque, isn't it? Hopefully I'll reread this one some time in the future and love it even more.

I loved the atmosphere in this book. I hated Phillip, he is a fascinating character but I was so irritated about how he manipulated Sylvia... I'm reading Mary Barton now and she reminds me of Sylvia too

Hi Katie, was great to watch your video about Sylvia's lovers, because I'm enjoying this beatiful book right now for #Victorber, I'm really in love with the prose and the plot, the characters and I will focus more in Phillip now.. but it's great... I only read before "Crandfor" and "North and South" and I love it so much!!!
This is my first #Victober and I'm fascinate with this book.

I did look for this book on Audio, but I couldn't find it on the audible website. So, I chose Our Mutual Friend! It'll be my first time reading it, so I'll play close attention to your videos during the read a long you had:)

I've enjoyed these shorter reviews of shorter stories (even though I am not a massive Gaskell fan)

Thanks for the review, and for introducing me to Elizabeth Gaskell. Here is a link to a Libravox recording, for those who need to hear the accents. It is not particularly well done, using all volunteer readers, BUT it is still very enjoyable and mostly understandable to me. ruclips.net/video/exeILhgiFAQ/видео.html
It is also important to note, I think, that Gaskell herself said that this was the saddest book she had ever written...and it is. To balance that out, though, I have to applaud the fascinating accounts, in detail, of the life and household customs of the time she was writing about. As a lover of all kinds of cultures, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about all the foods, preparations, etc. and as a fifth generation farmer (skipping my parents and only partly picked up by me), I also loved the story for its talk of such practical things.
Two other notes: I love the character of Hester Rose. And I love the presentation of true Christianity, not "religion" that has long been a perversion of it. The Christian characters, as I have found in other of Gaskell's works, are flawed but reflect a broad spectrum of people who are trying to follow Christ personally, not simply as a social movement or tradition, although that always affects all our faith journeys to some extent.

I'm glad you're enjoying Elizabeth Gaskell. I love Hester in Sylvia's Lovers too; it's a very sad but powerful novel.
